‘Typhoon Luis’ agri damage initially placed at P409M

The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday said that based on preliminary field reports, damage wrought by Typhoon “Luis” to agriculture was initially estimated at P409.7 million, mostly from rice and corn.

In a press briefing, Agriculture Undersecretary Emerson Palad said that as of Tuesday noon, damage to rice was initially placed at 15,499 metric tons - with an estimated value of P270.28 million with 31,600 hectares (ha.) of rice lands affected.

Meanwhile, losses to corn was estimated at 9,988 metric tons amounting to P134.8 million with about 18,700 ha. affected.

However, Palad said that despite these figures, “damage to rice and corn caused

“Damage to rice and corn is less than 1 percent of the projected national production for 2014, representing only 0.08 percent and 0.12 percent respectively,” he said.

“Most of the damages to corn could also be recovered – around 80 to 90 percent – because we are now at the harvesting stage,” he said.

In the meantime, Palad said that rains brought by “Luis” may be beneficial to the agriculture sector in the long run.

“Much needed rains were dumped by the typhoon especially to rain-red farmlands in the provinces of Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya and Batanes,” he said.

Industry, academe, civil society and gov’t band together for DigiBayanihan A multi-sectoral group of IT champions from industry, the public sector, technical vocation institutions, and the academe announced the establishment of DigiBayanihan, a movement that aims to promote digital literacy and digital citizenship in helping achieve national economic development.

The announcement, aptly made at the 12th Youth for IT Congress whose theme this year is “Harnessing the Power of Me,” challenges the Filipino youth and the tech savvy to actively participate in educating Filipinos on technology use.

Under the DigiBayanihan movement, partner organizations such as Intel Philippines, Children International-Philippines, the Information and Communications Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology (ICTO-DOST), the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP), the Philippine Community e-Center Network (PhilCeCNet), the Philippine Society of IT Educators (PSITE), and the Technical Vocational Schools and Associations of the Philippines (TEVSAPHIL) come together and consolidate ongoing initiatives on digital literacy and more importantly drum up support for more initiatives. By putting a spotlight on the impact of these initiatives, the movement hopes to create a sense of urgency for

digital literacy and push its prioritization in the Philippines’ human and economic development agenda.

DigiBayanihan partners are working together to reach more Filipinos who want to learn basic digital skills by involving individuals or groups as volunteer mentors, and leveraging on Intel Easy Steps, Intel’s digital literacy program that has a specially-developed curriculum comprised of fourteen modules, each containing approximately 2 hours of instruction.

“Intel’s contribution in the movement is leading the DigiBayanihan Secretariat,” said Yvonne Flores, Corporate Affairs Manager, Intel Philippines. “DigiBayanihan will also provide a traditional and digital avenue for Filipinos to volunteer and teach others to use technology in a meaningful way.We need to create a critical mass of digital literacy and citizenship champions at all levels of society who will motivate and inspire people to learn and take action.”

Coca-Cola Tacloban plant reopens

ACLOBAN City - The C oca C ola FEMSA Philippines has reopened its Tacloban plant, 10 months after it incurred USD15 million damages due to sup er typho on Yolanda.

Juan Ramon Felix, CocaCola FEMSA Philippines chief executive officer said the reopening is a manifestation of the softdrink maker’s confidence in the Eastern Visayas market and their contribution to

economic recovery.

“Our plant has been witness to stories of courage and selflessness at the height of Typhoon Yolanda and its aftermath. It is with deep gratitude and great pride that we mark the return of Coca-Cola’s brand of happiness in Tacloban,” said Juan Ramon Felix, CocaCola FEMSA Philippines chief executive officer, in a statement.

in Tacloban market and for continuing to supply beverage needs of the region despite damaged facility and logistical hurdles.

“Coca-Cola has been part of our history and culture here in Leyte. Even after the catastrophe, you keep on giving until you have no more left in your plant,” said City Vice Mayor Jerry T. Yaokasin during the plant reopening.

The giant beverage company invested USD25

million for the reopening of Tacloban plant. Repair works were concentrated on its hardware, bottling lines, roofing system, replenishing of stocks and replacement of some equipment.

Juan Dominguez, human resources and corporate affairs director of Coca Cola FEMSA Philippines said the region is one of Coca-Cola’s stronghold in the country.

“Leyte and Samar area have been one of the places

in the country where consumers prepare our product. The consumption is 25 million cases every year, representing 5 percent to 6 percent of the Philippine consumption,” Dominguez told reporters.

Operating since September 1953, the Tacloban production facility, which serves the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Samar, Eastern Samar, and Northern Samar, occupies a 2.40-hectare

property at the city’s Fatima village.

The fresh investment part of Coca-Cola FEMSA’s expansion budget of USD511 million in the Philippines in since it acquired on January 2013 the 51 percent share of Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI) from the CocaCola Company.

PLDT welcomes ‘Rocket’ plan to proceed with IPO Tsuneishi to deliver 60 ship orders by 2017

MANILA - Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Company welcomed the Rocket Internet AG’s (Rocket) plan to proceed with an initial public offering (IPO) that aims to raise 750 million euros by the yearend.

Rocket said in a statement that it plans to pursue an IPO by the end of the year on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, noting that current shareholders would not be selling in an offering that is expected to consist of only new shares.

To recall, PLDT and Rocket announced last

Aug. 7, a global strategic partnership to drive the development of innovative online payments solutions in emerging markets.

Under the terms of the partnership agreement, PLDT would invest 333 million euros in Rocket. Of this amount, 50 percent has already been paid.

With the announcement of Rocket’s intention to proceed with the IPO, PLDT will now pay in full the remaining 50 percent of its investment in Rocket. The Rocket IPO is intended to take place later in 2014.

The IPO, if pursued, is expected to consist solely of new shares from a capital increase. The new shares will be of the same class and bearing the same rights as shares held by current Rocket shareholders.

At present, the shareholders consist of Global Founders GmbH (Global Founders, which is the investment vehicle of Oliver Samwer, the founder and CEO of Rocket, and his brothers), Investment AB Kinnevik (Kinnevik), Access Industries (Access), United Internet (UI), HV

Holtzbrinck Ventures (HV) and PLDT. Existing shareholders of Rocket will remain invested and will not sell any shares as part of the offering. All six shareholders have signed lock up commitments not to sell or otherwise dispose of their shares for at least 12 months.

Rocket intends to use the proceeds from the IPO to finance its future growth through the launch of new businesses and providing further equity capital to its network of companies.

MNLF fighters, now a cooperative, to develop banana plant in Maguindanao

O TA BAT O C i t y Members of the Moro National Liberation Front will launch a self-sustained 500-hectare Cavendish banana farm in the MNLF’s main enclave in Datu Odin Sinsuat town in Maguindanao.

The project is meant to generate livelihood needed

to sustain the schooling of children of former Moro rebels that comprise the MNLF-led Barangay Bago Inged Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

Datumama Guiaman, chairman of the MNLF cooperative, said while they do not have foreign capitalists for their banana venture, there are traders abroad ready to buy their harvests.

The chairman of the MNLF’s largest and most politically active faction, former Cotabato City Mayor Muslimin Sema, will lead the symbolic launching of the banana farm project in Barangay Bago Inged in northwest of Datu Odin Sinsuat.

Sema said unlike most of the foreign-assisted Cavendish banana plantations

that mushroomed in Maguindanao in the past two years, the MNLF’s cooperative farm is a self-sustained project, to be funded out of earnings by local farmers.

Barangay Bago Inged is host to the MNLF’s largest enclave in Maguindanao, the Camp Ebrahim, now a government-recognized “peace zone,” where former Moro rebels thrive as

farmers.

Sema said the cooperative aims to develop into a Cavendish banana plantation at least 500 hectares of idle lands in the surroundings of Camp Ebrahim.

Guiaman said their cooperative banana project shall also serve as a model farm for MNLF members in other Maguindanao towns.

The MNLF signed a peace

pact with government on September 2, 1996, paving the way for the integration of more than 6,000 guerillas into the Armed Forces and the Philippine National Police.

Most of the MNLF members that failed to qualify for integration into the military and the police are now peacefully tilling agricultural lands in their enclaves. (PNA)

Agri exports spike ‘double-digit feat’ PH, Indonesia sign Growth in agro-based exports spiked in the first seven months of the year.

“The exports outlook for agricultural products is bullish,” said Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan.

Citing a Philippine Statistics Authority report released September 10, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said agro exports registered “a strong doubledigit feat” as sales receipts reached US$447.2 million in July 2014 – 20.7 percent higher than the US$370.6 million recorded in the same period a year ago.

“This is largely due to favorable performances from all major sub-groups, in particular, coconut products, fruits and vegetables, other agro-based products, and sugar products,” it said in a press statement.

S ay i ng t he e x p or ts outlook for agricultural products is bullish, Balisacan said efforts must be intensified to implement programs that will help vulnerable area cope with

the adverse impact of a dry spell and coconut scale insect infestation. This “will propel further growth” in agriculture, especially for coconut-based commodities for which the Philippines is a major exporter, said the NEDA chief.

The growth in manufacturing and agro-based exports more than offset the lower receipts from mineral, petroleum, and forest products, he said.

Balisacan said merchandise exports grew by 12.4 percent in July 2014, with higher revenues from manufactures and agrobased products.

The value of merchandise exports grew to US$5.5 billion from US$4.9 billion in July 2013. The Philippines posted the second highest exports growth among the major economies in East and Southeast Asia in July 2014, next only to China.

For t he f irst s e ven months of 2014, exports sales grew by 8.5 percent to US$35.1 billion, higher than US$32.4 billion in the same period last year. Ac-

counting for 81.5 percent of total merchandise exports, revenues from manufactured goods grew by 15.9 percent from US$3.8 billion in July 2013 to US$4.4 billion in July 2014 due to strong overseas sales in almost all sub-groups in manufactured commodities, with electronics products topping the list.

“The favorable performance of the manufactures sector largely reflected the upbeat global manufacturing activity which remains elevated,” said Balisacan.

“Our country’s robust exports growth reflects global trend, as we see major economies such as the United States, China and Germany continuously showing signs of bouncing back from economic shocks,” he said. “This suggests that global demand is picking up pace and that our exports sector is slowly gaining momentum.”

He said that overall, global trade activity for the initial month of the third quarter projects better prospects for the rest

of the year, especially for electronics, garments, intermediate goods exports and agriculture-based products.

Japan remains as the Philippines’ top export market accounting for 22.2 percent of the country’s total revenues from merchandise exports during the period. The US came second, with a 14.7 percent share, followed by China with 12.8 percent.

In terms of regional destination, outward shipments to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations member-countries comprised 13.8 percent of total exports while the European Union covered 9.8 percent.

In Asia so far until July, China posted the highest growth at 14.5 percent, followed by the Philippines (12.4 percent) then Vietnam (12.2 percent). Other economies that posted positive exports growth were Taiwan (5.8 percent), South Korea (5.4 percent), Malaysia (0.8 percent), Japan (0.8 percent) and Singapore (0.4 percent). (SciPhil)

Nevertheless, the Department of Education opens equal opportunities to students who are endowed with gifts and talents in entrepreneurship. DepEd Technolympics is an avenue where a student demonstrates his/her personal entrepreneurial competencies thus, shaping his/her future career.

Done annually, Technolympics is a competition of skills and talents from the various field of specialization in Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE). Last September 12, 2014, the young entrepreneurs from different

MOU to develop seaweeds Industry Leading seaweeds organizations of Indonesia and the Philippines has partnered to develop the seaweeds industry Indonesian Trade Vice Minister Bayu Krisnamurthi arrived in Manila on September 11 to witness the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the countries’ lead seaweeds organizations Asosiasi Rumput Laut Indonesia and the Seaweed Industry Association of the Philippines.

The collaborative partnership between the Asosiasi Rumput Laut Indonesia (ARLI) and the Seaweed Industry Association of the Philippines (SIAP) will include sharing of good farming practices, cultivate enhancement and marketing expansion practices.

Both SIAP and ARLI envision the possibility of investments or joint ventures in seaweed farming and processing in either country. Indonesia and the Philippines are the two top sources of seaweeds in ASEAN. “This MOU is a result of continuing discussions between the Philippines and Indonesia to expand trade relations and investment. We are forging deeper economic ties between the two countries by significant exploring other avenues for complementation and collaboration. Marina: Sister ferry of ill-fated Maharlika 2 has ‘major deficiencies’

SURIGAO City––The seaworthiness of a sister vessel of the ill-fated M/V Maharlika 2 has come under question and its owner was already issued a suspension order, an official of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in Caraga said Tuesday.

Emmanuel B. Carpio, MARINA regional director said that upon inspection audit on Sunday, M/V

Mahalarlika 4 was found to have major deficiencies in as far as seaworthiness is concerned and should not be allowed to sail.

Carpio said such deficiencies of Maharlika 4, which has been plying the Surigao City-Liloan, Southern Leyte route, are ground for the cancellation of its certificate of public conveyance.

FOR decades, the Tausug fisherfolks here in Barangay Inawayan, Toril spread their nets on the Quinocol river, always expecting the river to yield food for their families.

But things are not quite settling now, as the Aboitiz’ coal fired-power plant is now near completion, and the city government has assessed the fishing village is in a danger zone.

“Since we were here, we did not experience calamity like flooding, big waves. How come this area is now classified by the local government as a danger zone?” asked 74-year old Sobrecary Jazan, who claims the four-hectare community was owned by his grandfather who hailed from Jolo, Sulu.

M/V Maharlika II mishap: Five more bodies retrieved

PORT of Macabalan, Cagayan de Oro City––The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) here in Northern Mindanao has confirmed that five more bodies have been retrieved near the site where M/V Maharlika II sank in Southern Leyte last Saturday.

LCDR. Eliezer Dalnay, station commander of PCG in Cagayan de Oro and spokseman of the PCG-

Northern Mindanao District, identified the five fatalities as Ramon Molato, Nelson Custodio, Betty Bahi, Arlita Puyales and two-year old Tiffany Saberon.

The bodies were recovered around 4:30 pm, Monday.

The PCG in Northern Mindanao have deployed two ships to help in the ongoing search and rescue operation being launched by a composite search and rescue team.

LCDR. Dalnay, said the manifest that says there were 116 passengers on board when the sea mishap happened is now highly questionable because of the discrepancy revealed by the five recovered bodies.

Three bodies have already been recovered earlier while 110 survived the sea mishap.

Barangay residents to rally vs USAFFE

A lady lawmaker insists on the creation of a Special Committee on ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) of the House of Representatives so that threats and opportunities are identified and effectively addressed policy-wise.

“There is an urgent need to create said special committee to address these concerns vital to the coun-

The six awardees who “exemplify the values of the University,” honored during a Special Academic Convocation on September 16, at the Rev. Henry Lee Irwin, SJ Theater, Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City.

T h e U n i v e r s i t y ’s Board of Trustees chose to confer the Traditional University Awards on these six exemplars: the Bukas Palad Award to “Missionar y and peace builder” Cardinal Quevedo; the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi to “Pioneer of neo-ethnic Filipino dance” Locsin; the Government Service Award to “ Fighter for justice and good government” Conchita Carpio Morales; the Lux-In-Domino Award to “Mathematician and administrator” Mari-Jo P. Ruiz; the Ozanam Award to “Champion of Marginalized Women” Teresa Banaynal Fernandez; and the Parangal L i n g k o d S a m b ay a n a n (posthumous) to “Missionary and champion of Indigenous Peoples” Delbert Rice.

According to the citation, Quevedo, who recently celebrated his 50th year as priest, “has proven to be an authentic peace builder, especially

between Christians and Muslims in Mindanao. He has consistently championed the rights of the poor and marginalized in society, regardless of their beliefs” and through his work and life, “truly embodies the Ignatian spirit of generosity and has greatly contributed to the creation of what Pope Francis calls a ‘culture of encounter,’ which the Pope says is the foundation of peace.”

Quevedo, who once served as President of the Notre Dame University, had served as Bishop of Kidapawan, Archbishop of Nue va S egovia and Archbihsop of Cotabato.

He was elevated to Cardinal in February this year. He served as President of the Catholic Bishops of the Philippines (CBCP) for two terms and was secretarygeneral of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conference (FABC) from 2005 to 2008.

Locsin spent her elementary and high school years at the Philippine Women’s University in Davao City and finished her AB English at the Ateneo de Davao University.

She earned her MA in Dance from the Ohio State University.

As a student at the Ateneo de Davao in the late 1970s, she collaborated with artists Joey Ayala and Al Santos for the rock opera, “Sa Bundok ng Apo,” where she did the choreography for Santos’ lyrics and Ayala’s music.

They would collaborate again in “Encantada.”

In a statement, Charlito “Kaloy” Manlupig, head of the Cagayan de Oro-based Balay Mindanaw, said his organization “joins the entire peacebuilders’ community in celebrating the recognition given to Orlando Cardinal Quevedo by the ADMU for his key role in the pursuit of justice, development and peace in Mindanao and in the country.”

“On a personal note, I also take pride in being a product of Oblate education and formation of which Cardinal Quevedo is one of the pillars. The Oblates have instilled in us the virtues of resiliency and persistence by sharing with us their motto

‘Leave no stone unturned.’

According to the ADMU website, the Bukas Palad Award was initially named Peypoch Award, in memory of Fr. Manuel Peypoch, SJ, who taught at the Ateneo de Manila and distinguished himself in serving the Jesuit Order, the Church and society in the areas of education and culture, in social and human development concerns.

The Award, first given in 1963, was renamed BukasPalad to “capture the Ignatian spirit of ‘Generosity’ and to give recognition to the unconditional, dedicated ser vice of Religious in Christ’s Kingdom.”

According to Gov. Plaza, the farmers in these areas are no longer beneficiaries of government programs, but are now enrollees.

“Before, at the start of the PAMANA program, t he y are b enef iciar ies because they are bound to receive. Now that they are the owners of their livelihood with easy access to market and trade, they are called enrollees because many want to enroll and join the band to success,” Gov. Plaza said.

The provincial gover nment’s f l agship program called USAD also prioritize the implement ation of its agricultural development programs because of the easy access opened by the PAMANA projects.

P r e s e n t l y, l o c a l residents who are naturally industrious, are focused on income generating activities mostly farming because the areas are suitable for high value crops. Feeling they are not ignored by the government, they feel confident and peace now reigns in the area.

The cash assistance was taken from the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP) which was coursed thru the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). But according to Provincial Civil Security O f f i c e ch i e f and l e a d negotiator Josefina Bajade, the provincial government has already released P5,000 to each of the 24 rebels during their surrender on the first quarter of this year 2014, intended for their food and emergency assistance.

“These rebel returnees who have brought along with them their fairearms during their surrender also received cash assistance from the army corresponding to the firearms they surrender.

According to DILG provincial director Arlene Ann Sanchez, each rebel received P65,000 each representing P15,000 for immediate assistance and

P50,000 for livelihood assistance.

Rodelio Roquita reported a tremendous increase of crime incidence this year compared to the same period last year. The highest is physical injury with 345 incidence from January to August this year compared to only 43 on the same period last year with a variance of 302 incidence.

VICE President Jejomar Binay has never been timid in announcing to all and sundry his longing of replacing President Aquino when the latter’s term ends on June 30, 2016.

In announcing his bid to replace Aquino, Binay just made himself vulnerable this early to be vetted by everyone, friends and foes alike, if he deserves to be considered to such lofty position. Was it good then for Binay to announce his presidential ambition ahead of anyone else, only time could tell?

What is clear at this point is that his early announcement only opened the doors for him to be scrutinized as to his competence, qualifications and moral ascendancy-wise, to be the country’s next president. And sadly for him, it seems the current vetting undertaken on him proved disastrous to his ambitions.

This is the problem when public service is turned into an ambition. The ambition gets intense and once it gets intense, it becomes an obsession. And obsessed person will do everything and anything to realize his ambition. To this category Binay belongs.

Binay may claim that the calamitous situation as a result of typhoon Luis faced by the people in Cagayan Monday was enough reason to go there unscheduled thus his inability to face the nation as promised by him to explain his side on the issues surfacing against him in the Senate probe, his cancellation of his own press conference tells volume about his being cornered by all these charges.

In fact, Binay seems reluctant to answer the charges officially hurled against him by former trusted allies proves nothing but the indefensibility of the issues directed at him. An official with clean hands, as he has been trying to project himself to be, will immediately face the people to present his side. But until now Binay continues to do his best to evade from answering the charges hurled against him.

This just goes to show that he has no wares to prove

his claimed innocence. For how can he explain the sudden rise of his wealth that he never had before he became mayor. Is becoming mayor a means now to become wealthy?

If it is the case now, then the newly-installed police chief of the La Loma police station in Quezon City is right that there is nothing wrong when a member of the police force, official or ordinary patrolman, becomes a millionaire for it is everyone’s right to become one.

This argumentation is very flawed unless the police force could pinpoint that sons of the 50 Filipino billionaires listed in the Forbes magazine as belonging to that elite club of billionaires in the world are now members of the police force.

Why did I say this? All those who belong to the Upper Lower and Lower Middle classes of Philippine society where all of the policemen, official or not, belong know for a fact that their earnings are just enough for their daily need for food, clothing, schooling for their children and a host of other needs.

These multiple daily needs made it impossible for those who belong to that social strata to have millions of pesos in their bank accounts. Now pray tell me how can a policeman, official or not, then have millions of pesos in savings given his salary?

And why in heaven there

are only a few who could become millionaires while the others in the same police rank could hardly make both ends meet with their salaries?

This is the same thing with the meteoric rise of the wealth of Binay since he became mayor of Makati City. This fact should even lead us to ask if becoming Makati City mayor is just like becoming an entrepreneur in the class of the 50 billionaires named in the Forbes magazine list. In the current vetting of Binay as to his moral competence to lead the nation as its president, his inexplicable wealth is the issue. And as far as this issue is concerned he has not proved himself worthy to succeed Aquino.

No matter how the Binay camp claim the current Senate investigation on him and the rest of his children who are all public officials is undertaken in aid of demolition, unless they can present with incontrovertible evidence justifying their acquisition of their inexplicable wealth, the people are incline to believe their wealth is ill-gotten.

And if Binay could become rich by becoming a mere mayor, think how rich he would become if he becomes president of the land. Think about this.

40 Filipino soldiers in ‘Golan’ recommended for promotion

CAGAYAN de Oro City––A lawmaker has filed Bill in Congress to recommend the promotion of 40 Filipino peacekeepers in Golan Heights who refused to surrender to Syrian rebels.

Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez, of Cagayan De Oro City, said on Monday that the 40 Filipino soldiers have shown exemplary bravery and courage when their UN encampment in the borders of Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights was waylaid by about 100 rebels last August 27, 2014.

“Although outnumbered and surrounded, the Filipino soldiers refused to surrender their positions and firearms. They engaged the attacking rebels in a fierce firefight and maneuvered to a “Great Escape” without a single casualty,” Rodriguez said.

He said that the exemplary bravery of the Filipino peacekeepers has caught the attention of the military and government leaders around the world which also depicts the pride of the Filipinos as a nation and as a people.

Rodriguez said that he filed House Bill No. 1464 in Congress together with PartlyList Rep. Maximo Rodriguez of Abante Mindanao, to recommend the promotion to one rank higher and the pinning of the Congressional Awards of Honor to the 40 Filipino peacekeepers.

The 40 Filipino peacekeepers were part of the current compliment of the 7th Philippine Contingent to Golan Heights (7th PCGH) composed of 331 members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

The United Nation established UNDOF on May 31, 1974 by Security Council Resolution 350 (1974) following the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan after the 1967 Six Day War between Israel and Syria.

Rodriguez said that the Filipino contingent occupied two UN encampments, the first group occupying the position in Breiqa while the second group of 40 Filipino peacekeepers occupied the encampment in Rwihana called “Position 68.”

He said that the Syrian rebels attacked the Position 68 UN encampment in Rwihana last Aug. 27, 2014 and demanded the surrender of the Filipino peacekeepers, which the Filipino soldiers refused despite the order of UN UNDOF commander Maj. Gen. Iqbal Singh Singha to lay down their arms in exchange for the freedom of 43 Fijian peacekeepers earlier held hostage by the rebels.

Apolinario also revealed initial plans to build 150-200 additional housing units in Buggoc to accommodate the families from the sports complex.

“We have been given a timeline by DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman to close the grandstand by December 15,” he shared.

‘Ecstasy’ worth P3m seized in Gensan GENERAL Santos City––Antidrug operatives seized around P3 million worth of suspected “ecstasy” pills and arrested a suspected drug pusher in a buybust operation near a shopping mall here on Monday night.

Agent Vince Lachica, spokesperson of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 12, said Tuesday they recovered the narcotic pills after entrapping a tricycle driver who allegedly doubled as a drug pusher in an operation near the Gaisano Mall, along the national highway in Barangay Lagao at around 8:45 p.m. Monday.

He said they nabbed suspect Sonny Molle, 32, after allegedly selling some “ecstasy” tablets along with another companion to a PDEA agent who posed as buyer.

Molle’s companion, who was initially identified as a certain Bombi dela Cruz, was able to escape and is now the subject of manhunt operations, he said.

Lachica said they found in Molle’s possession a total of 2,355 pieces of “ecstasy” pills that were packed in two plastic bags.

He said the seized “ecstasy”

tablets were all in beige color and have “x-files” markings on one side.

The seized item was included in their catalogue of narcotic pills and has a reported street value of P1,000 to P1,500 each, he said.

“This is the first time for us to recover this kind of illegal drug here in Region 12,” he told MindaNews in a telephone interview.

Prior to the buy-bust operation, Lachica said they received a tip from one of their confidential agents regarding Molle’s illegal activities.

He said they immediately conducted a test-buy and sent the purchased pills to the PDEA laboratory in Davao City for confirmatory testing.

“The test results initially confirmed that they were positive of 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA so we decided to launch the buy-bust operation,” he said.

MDMA is the main ingredient of “ecstasy,” which is a synthetic, psychoactive drug that has similarities to both the stimulant amphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline.

Marketed as a sex drug,

“ecstasy” reportedly produces feelings of increased energy, euphoria, emotional warmth and empathy toward others, and distortions in sensory and time perception.

Lachica said they are still determining the origin of the recovered illegal drugs, which they sent to the PDEA laboratory in Davao City on Tuesday morning for confirmatory tests.

But he said Molle, who is a resident of Purok Masagana in Barangay San Isidro here, claimed that he picked them up from an undisclosed source based in Davao City around noon last Monday.

The suspect claimed that he was just asked by his neighbor, Bombi dela Cruz, to get the items in Davao City and bring them to this city in exchange for a P2,000 payment.

Lachica said the results of their initial investigation showed that the seized “ecstasy” pills could have originated from a foreign source and entered the country either by sea or air cargo. “These were reportedly intended for shipment to Boracay but the owner tried to sell them first here,” he added.

The undertaking is a component of the Agrarian Reform Connectivity and Economic Support Services (ARCCESS) Project, one of the support services delivery mechanisms of DAR for the CARP beneficiaries nationwide to contribute to the

THE MAN OF

“The Man of Himologan” was conceptualized and staged in the year 2008 as a way to heighten socio-civic awareness and educate about the history of our city among the youth.

It was named after the pre-historic home of Cagayan de Oro’s original natives, Himologan. The 6-year old pageant is often referred to as the counterpart of Miss Cagayan de Oro. The first Man of Himologan was held in 2008, where 15 young men with ages ranging from 18 to 25 were presented to the public during pageant night at the Imperial Ballroom of the Dynasty Court Hotel.

FHGG’s Lady Boss, Madam Edna Ramos-Garmendia said that the Man of Himologan is different from other male

pageants because its main advocacy is to highlight the God-fearing, intelligent, confident, talented, and socially motivated Kagay-anon men. Emphasis is on social responsiveness and personality development. The winning candidate will serve as a role model; a youth icon for the youth of Cagayan de Oro. The Man of Himologan 2014 was held at the Rotunda of Limketkai Center last August 15, 2014.

Proclaimed as The Man of Himologan 2014 was Delegate Number 12 - Romel Arvin Nikko Villafuerte, 18 years old from Barangay Kauswagan, a 3rd year Medical Technology student of Liceo de Cagayan University.

THE CDEO SINGING

POP STAR “The CdeO Singing Pop Star” is a city-wide singing competition, in partnership with Limketkai Center and Shopwise.

It aims to search for the newest singing sensation among the talented youth of Cagayan de Oro City ages 14 to 20 years old who has the musicality and star quality to showcase.

The competition will cover the entire barangay of Cagayan de Oro City but it is open to the neighboring towns within the region. Two (2) qualifiers were selected for each elimination round from May, June and July. The six (6) qualifiers competed for the Grand Finals last August 16, 2014 at the Rotunda of Limketkai Center.

FHGG’s Lady Boss, Madam Edna Ramos-Garmendia together with

Mr. Gabby Bacarro of Cagayan de Oro Talent Center and Ms. Donnah Burgos of Shopwise announced and proclaimed Sheena Marie Labis as the first-ever “Cdeo Singing Pop Star”. Her winning piece was “I Believe” by Fantasia Barino. She is 17 years old from Barangay Gusa and a 2nd year BS Technology and Communications Management student of Mindanao University of Science and Technology.
