RDRRMC Region 10 bares 2013 Gawad KALASAG awardees; rewards P50k each

he Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council region 10 chaired by the Office of t he Civ i l D e fe ns e has bared ten awardees of the 2013 Gawad KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan (KALASAG) Awards during the regular monthly meeting of the Technical Working Group on November 19 at Tudela Farmers’ Enterprise and Training Center, municipality of Tudela, Misamis Occidental.

According to Office of Civil Defense-10 regional director Ana C. Cañeda, Gawad KALASAG is an award given to individuals, private sectors, non-government and government organizations in due recognition of their initiative in helping the Philippine government’s battle cry to uplift the standard of disaster management in the country.

“We acknowledge their utmost dedication and sincere devotion of handling and managing disasters in our country,” Cañeda said.

Gawad KALASAG awardees are the following: 1.) Province of Lanao del Norte as Best Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council; 2.) City of Cagayan de Oro as Best City Disaster Risk Reduction and Man-

agement Council-Highly Urbanized; 3.) City of Ozamis, Best City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-Component; 4.) Municipality of Quezon, Bukidnon as Best Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council- 1st to 3rd class municipality; 5.)

“CGH has already won two consecutive times, if they will again win under the Best Local Government Unit Hospital, it is then their hall of fame,” Cañeda added.

Leaders should be proactive The K to 12 Basic Education program

Practicing to be a leader is a mixture of a challenging and exciting task, and a leader should be effective in performing such.

Leadership is challenging because being a leader means a lot of tough situations and problems that lies ahead. In tackling all of these, there is no turning back and a leader should be brave and courageous to face these situations and problems.

Most of the times, as well, a leader will be in a situation where he plans, organizes, makes sure that things run as planned, tests and risks.

The achievement of their

goal as a group depends on him and how he handles the situation and leads each one of his constituent. Thus, he should be well-equipped in handling these responsibilities.

Leadership is exciting also because it involves learning a lot of things, which would not be gained in just an ordinary situation. Lots of knowledge comes at hand beyond comfort zones; it is gained after taking responsibilities, performing duties and doing tasks that are not normally done.

Further, in doing exciting and challenging leadership tasks, a leader must be effective in performing such tasks in order to be successful.

In a business book written by author Steven R. Covey, he

stated that one of the habits of effective people is being proactive. It means that taking initiative in life through realizing that decisions are the prime determining factor for effectivity in life. Leader should also make sure that these decisions should be in line with his principles and paradigms as a leader. In addition, being proactive is being responsible with the choice and consequences that might follow.

Leadership is an influence.

Thus, to be a good influence to his comrades, he should be proactive, not just in leading but also in all aspects in his life.

K+12 Basic Education Program is a new system in the Philippines, implemented under President Benigno Aquino’s administration.

The implementation of it is to improve country’s educational system and produce high-quality graduates.

The K to 12 has been realized through collaboration among Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and other

stakeholders.

Aside from the fact that the current administration believes a 12-year program is an adequate period for learning under basic education, there are various reasons for the approval of K to 12 Basic Education program.

First is that Philippines is the last in Asia and one of the three countries worldwide having ten-year preuniversity cycle. Through K to 12, our nation will be at par with other countries.

Other than that, this program will also provide longer period of schooling for students. The longer period of schooling could give them

more time to learn about subject matters.

And last, K to 12 program is a key so that Filipinos would have recognition in working abroad. It is because K to 12 program consist of technical-vocational courses. Thus, it is expected to produce better-trained human resources that could compete in global arena.

K to 12 has traveled a long run and introduced improvements for Philippine Education system. Through it, Filipinos, of any status, can be more confident that they too could contribute more success, helping towards nation-building.

Do you have trouble in handling your temper?

Do you have problems in dealing with your impatience?

I must admit , I am also struggling with my impatience.

I easily get angry when I encounter people who beats around the bush and tell long stories.

I usually get irritated when the fast food service is real slow.

My patience really gets tested when I am in the middle of the traffic.

Sometimes I just want to cry out and pray to God, “Lord give me patience, now!”

In other words, mga kapatid, tao din ako, na naiinis at napipikon sa mga pangyayari sa buhay.

If you are feeling the same way, you are not alone.

Allow me to share with you my personal observation of people who are impatient.

Impatient people easily get angry while patient people are not easily angered.

Impatient people make foolish decision while patient people make wise decision.

Impatient people are often sad while patient people are often happy.

Impatient people are sometimes annoying while patient people are fun to be with.

Impatient people are often emotional while patient people are more objective.

Impatient people do not know how to wait while patient people know how to wait.

Impatient people live in stress while patient people live in peace.

We now all have a choice to make: To live in impatience or to live in patience?

We cannot say that this is how we were born, so people just got to live up with our attitude.

At the end of the day, you and I have a choice to make.

Do you want to live in stress or in peace?

If you choose to live in peace, you got to choose to be more patient.

Becoming a patient person ultimately is a choice.

THINK. REFLECT. APPLY. Was there a time when your patience was tested?

How did you react to the situation? Were you calm or angry?

Do you think you should make a move to counter your impatience?

ecause how can a positive trait remain positive in the long end from first of age towards maturity – if all the negatives along the way were given emphasis, most of the time ultimate?

Hence, I took on the task of doing just that when I became a father to my 2 kids, the elder male and the younger, female – redirecting what was apparently usually defined as negative into the positive WITHOUT SCOULDING since they wore diapers until they grew bigger.

The results were ASTONISHING as I expected. We were very close with the kids, their intelligence did shine on all academics, they could communicate very well with their age and elder people, very creative, they could absorb new learning easily whether mental or physical, they possessed a great sense of humor, there was less crying, if at all, and many more. Also, the results in the male and the female were the same.

Of course, there was great adjustment on my part because I was raised the traditional way.

But it helped a lot that I pointed out immediately to them that I was SORRY and I won’t raise my voice again. Doing this is an act of contrition, not of an over acting activity.

That REALLY is the point of PATIENCE. THE PATIENCE THAT MEANS LISTENING. Not doing or TALKING – but LISTENING. The patience there is when you HOLD BACK before scolding and flaunting your temper. That’s when you think twice about it before launching the scolding. Then you become calmer, and reformulating your words into more constructive lines, thereby becoming a melody instead of a mere noise. And when the melody comes out, the expected result of HARMONY is achieved. Only then PATIENCE is displayed.

Most doctors of psychology would maintain that there must be a balance of praise and scolding, of happiness and pain. I’d rather DISAGREE. Rather that stressing positive and acceptable behavior is sufficient enough.

Freud’s theories must be very outdated at this time, really, while still being the hallmark center point of most schools of psychology, sociology, education, etc.

But this mosquito, as I may so call it, must go. Since it stresses the nagger more than the nagged that receives it, it’s really simple to do. To do this is to not nag and say it only once with nice words of course and a clear foresight of the intended result, which is good and happy for both or all.

Nagging results in the shrinking of the mind and doesn’t result in any opening of the mind.

Instead of saying ‘bayot’ to a child, or ‘smoke’ or ‘drink’ or ‘kulit’ or much worse ‘kill’, and many more, one will rest assured that that child will turn out gay, a smoker, a drinker, a menace, a crook or a killer. Because of one’s paranoia of having a child that will eventually malign one’s reputation when she grows up, one introduces to the mind something that wasn’t there in the first place.

And if it were a crime that

resulted from nagging, as is almost the case, it is the crime that is punished, and not the root of it, which is nagging. And we see crime DAILY in tv, radio and papers that will only perpetuate it, since it will be placed in the minds of those who don’t have it in their minds yet.

Be careful with this. This is very seriously damaging. One symptom of this is the child that can’t move, can’t react and sits in one place. MEDIA especially should overturn this.

If it were love, then repetition is relevant and sweet. And it is sweeter for the repeater than for the child or subject who receives the repetition.

The result is ecstatic happiness and a sense of overwhelming, overflowing life.

And that is really the point being made, stressed and emphasized. The same with ‘struggle’ and ‘advocacy’ – there is a going against.

It will only leak to create some other form of conflict in the end.

am writing this piece, the 600 delegates have started flocking in, converging at a Mass to be held at the St. Augustine Cathedral this morning. From there, it will be two days of plenary sessions, discussing their 2015 humanitarian plans on a national scale.
