Aquino welcomes potential USD2.3B EU investments

P residen t B e n i g n o Aquino III considers his delegation’s trip to Europe this week as successful partly because of additional investment inflows to the Philippines.

DTI sets trade exposition in Zambo City

AMBOANGA City - The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is holding a four-day trade fair in this city that will feature this region’s finest products.

Dr. Sitti Amina Jain, DTI regional director, said the fair dubbed as the 2014 Zamboanga Peninsula Trade Exposition (ZAMPEX) will be held Oct. 8-11.

She said the ZAMPEX 2014 is a great venue for local businessmen to promote their products that will be identified with the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Jain said at least 90 ex-

hibitors – coming from the region, other Mindanao regions, and foreign neighbors like Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia – will showcase various products, including food and handicrafts.

She said ZAMPEX 2014 will also feature a garden show care of the local government, business matching with prospect buyers from Home Accents Group of the Philippines (HAPI), Philippine Chamber of Handicraft, Inc. (PCHI), Phil Food Processors and Exporters Organization,

Inc. (PHILFOODEX), and the Integrated Food Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (INFOMAP) invited.

She said techno demo will also be held for interested individuals or groups who wish to start their own businesses aside from the exhibits.

She said the techno demo will run on Oct. 9-11 with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) taking charge of the NutriFood demos, which include coconut and squash products on Oct. 9; the

Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) will demo on seaweeds and bottled sardines while the Department of Agriculture will handle cooking demo on organic banana and “mamon preciosa” on Oct. 10.

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) will showcase abaca rope and bag making on Oct. 11.

Jain said that a seminar on franchising is set to be held on Oct. 9.

IPOPHL to accredit PRSP as CMO

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), recently received a new application from the Performers’ Rights Society of the Philippines (PRSP) for accreditation as Collective Management Organization (CMO).

PRSP formally submitted their documentary requirements to the IPOPHL for accreditation as CMO to help the performer enforce his rights under Republic Act No. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, as amended (IP Code).

Performers, as defined

by Section 202 of the IP Code, are the actors, singers, musicians, dancers, and other persons who act, sing, declaim, play in, interpret, or otherwise perform literary and artistic work.

In the PRSP context, performers derive their income from performing in their various fields of expertise in culture.

“PRSP is the group that will now handle the interest of performers whether it’s in songs or in movies. Now they are applying with us because they want to be a CMO,” IPOPHL Director General Ricardo Blancaflor explained, “This is a group that will start collecting royalties for its members and their target is the royalties that they can earn for their fellow actors and performers.”

CMOs are organizations that enforce the copyright of the copyright holders.

Through this mandate, IPOPHL will be able to monitor and promote good corporate governance among CMOs, benefitting not only the rights holders themselves but also the users of copy-

righted works.

Members of the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA), mall owners, restaurants, and other heavy users of music in their establishments will greatly benefit from this provision, as they are ensured that only legitimate collecting agencies can collect royalties from them on behalf of copyright owners.

“Once we accredit them (PRSP), they have the right to negotiate for the royalties of the performers.

So instead of individual performers running after producers, it will be the organization that will do it for them,” Blancaflor added.

As CMO, PRSP will initially release the collection directly to the performer once a year but as the operation progresses, distribution can be done twice or more in a year which will last for 50 years from the end of

the year in which the performances and recordings took place.

“This will be our legacy to our fellow performers,” said John Lesaca, the PRSP’s Treasurer and Acting General Manager, as their organization strengthens the copyright protection of many Filipino artists.

IPOPHL has already accredited the Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society (FILCOLS) and the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (FILSCAP) as CMOs collecting fees for books and musical works, respectively.

In a 2006 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) study on copyright industries, it showed that Philippine copyright-based industries contribute 4.92 percent to the GDP and 11.1 percent to national employment of the country.

Senate wants hearing to present auto roadmap

MANILA - The Senate C om m itte e on Tr a d e, Commerce, and Entrepreneurship, headed by Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, will file a resolution calling for a hearing to present the automotive roadmap with the stakeholders.

Senator Aquino, during the opening of 5th Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) in Pasay City Thursday, told reporters that he will call for a hearing to discuss the auto roadmap since the Congress has oversight function. “(We’ll) call for a hearing, ask DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) to present with CAMPI (Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc.) the current automotive roadmap then see if we need to have further process to improve it,” the Senator said.

“But basically, the gist is to call for a hearing to present the automotive roadmap to the public also; to harmonize different policies,” he added.

He explained that the hearing eyes to complement the auto roadmap to other plans like in infrastructure and transportation.

“When it comes to the automotive industry, if you want the sector to create

more jobs for Filipinos, we need to make sure it is integrated with other plans for the rest of society. For example, the infrastructure plan needs to be integrated with the automotive roadmap,” Senator Aquino said.

“Even if we are selling large volume of cars but our roads will be like a parking lot, then the automotive industry will not really grow,” he said in Filipino.

“Maybe that’s my commitment to the members of CAMPI -- as chairman of trade -- we can look into this and see if these roadmaps are actually complementing each other rather than contradicting each other,” he added.

The lawmaker said his office will file the resolution on Monday.

The country’s automotive roadmap targets to give incentives to industry players who can meet the standards that the government will require.

The DTI said the roadmap eyes to incentivize those who can meet the annual production of 40,000 units per model. However, the government has yet to conclude the final minimum production volume.

The government also targets to give incentives to industry players who can invest in the local supply chain of the auto industry.

NGCP restores power in CAGELCO II

he National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has restored power in the Cagayan Electric Cooperatives Inc 2 (CAGELCO 2). ”NGCP restored power

transmission service to parts of CAGELCO 2... after re-energizing the Magapit-Sta. Ana 69kV line segment at 1:18 P.M.,” it said on its twitter account.

Specifically, the Gonzaga, Sta. Teresita, Sta.

Ana and Buguey, Cagayan areas will have their power restored with the re-energization.

Earlier, the NGCP said it will act on the affected areas as soon as the weather allows.

Meanwhile, the custom-

ers of CAGELCO I and KAELCO are still without power due to the affected Tuguegarao-Solana-Tabuk 69-kV line.

Meralco customers without power grow to 137,946

MANILA - The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) reported Friday that power supply to 137,946 of their customers had been affected due to the typhoon’s strength. ”As of 1pm, affected number of customers stood at 137,946,” Meralco said in a statement.

It highlighted that this was only 2.6 percent of Meralco’s entire franchise.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that Metro Manila, Laguna and Rizal will experience severe amounts of rainfall in the next 12 hours. With that, more power outages will likely take place. (PNA)
