Pepsi board OKs venture in nonbeverage project The Board of Directors of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI) has approved the company’s investment in snack food project. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) Wednesday, PCPPI said its Board of Directors held a special meeting in which they approved the company’s move in expanding to snack food from its business of manufacturing beverage products. PCPPI cited that its investment in snack food project will involve manufacturing, sale, and distribution in the local market. ALENCIA City - The Philippine Veterans Bank has opened one of its newest branches in Mindanao – the PVB Valencia City Branch. Business has commenced on September 2, 2014 in this city, according to PVB Vice President for Corporate Affairs, Miguel VillaReal, although its formal inauguration is slated in October, this year. Aside from being a commercial bank, the war veterans and pensioners are serviced by this bank. Pensioners in the province of Bukidnon are very grateful. They said they will not experience rigorous travel anymore if they need the services of PVB. The nearest

Yuvallos explained that size of the population is a big factor in the integration because multinational companies are looking at market size. He, on the other hand, noted that because of the job

P36-M crops damaged in Maguindanao floods COTABATO City - Agriculture officials in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) on Tuesday placed at P35.9 million the initial value of crops damaged by flash floods that hit low-lying areas in Maguindanao early this week. Lawyer Makmod Mending, Jr., ARMM regional agriculture secretary, said the floods affected more than 7,000 hectares of rice and corn farms in Maguindanao towns that are located

near the 220,000-hectare Liguasan Delta. The delta, located at the tri-boundaries of the neighboring Maguindanao, North Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat provinces, is a geographical catch basin for more than a dozen large rivers that spring from forested hinterlands in the three provinces, in Bukidnon and in parts of South Cotabato. Bandits release midwive

ZAMBOANGA City––Suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits released Tuesday a government health worker they seized last month in the province of Sulu, military officials disclosed Wednesday. Released was Lailani Bernabe, the midwife of the district hospital in Luuk, Sulu. She was held captive for 12 days. Lt. Gen. Rustico Guerrero, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief, said Bernabe was released around 6 a.m. Tuesday in Barangay Danag, Patikul town. After her release, Guerrero said Bernabe boarded a passenger jeep to the town of Jolo, the provincial capital, and arrived home around 8 a.m. of the same day. Abu Sayyaf bandits reportedly led by Arod Wahing abducted Bernabe last August 28 in Barangay Lihbug Kabaw, Panglima Estino town, while she was on her way to work. Capt. President Franklin Drilon and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Jr., in the presence of President Aquino in ceremonies in Malacanang at 10 am. In his 10-minute speech after the handover, President Aquino assured that the draft BBL was crafted to be “makatwiran, makatarungan, at katanggap-tanggap sa lahat, Moro man, Lumad, o Kristiyano” (fair, just, and

acceptable to all, whether they are Moros, Lumads, or Christians). The 119-page draft law has 18 articles and an additional three-page appendix on a proposed ordinance providing for the “parliamentary districts composing the provinces, cities, municipalities and geographic areas of the Bangsamoro.” He urged Congress to examine the draft bill, which

World’s largest economy in a decade

CHINA is set to overtake t he US as t he world’s biggest economy in 2024, as consumer spending is exp e c te d to a lmost quadruple within the next ten years, according to IHS. But analysts also point to major challenges ahead. Global analytics firm IHS forecasts that China’s nominal gross domestic product will amount to 28.25 trillion USD in 2024, compared to the US’ 27.31 trillion USD. “Over the next 10 years, China’s economy is expected to “re-balance towards more rapid growth in consumption, which will help the structure of the domestic economy as well as growth for the Asia Pacific (APAC) as a region,” said Rajiv Biswas, chief Asia economist at IHS, in a September 8 press release. Of course, consumer spending is always the ke y. According to t he data, consumer spending is forecast to grow at an annual average rate of 7.7 percent in real terms over the next decade - from 3 trillion USD to 11 trillion USD - becoming a key engine of global consumer demand and world growth. M o r e o v e r, t h e A s i a n economic giant’s share of world GDP is expected to rise from around 12 percent in 2013 to 20 percent by 2025. Somehow amazing. Certain Chinese government measures such as the rollout of large-scale health care programs in both rural and urban China also support this development by reducing the need for households to save for health care. Moreover, Beijing has decided in recent years to back large annual increases in minimum wage levels in Chinese provinces, helping to boost consumer spending power.

The IHS forecast follows data released by China’s General Administration of Customs revealing that the country’s monthly trade surplus reached an all-time high of 49.8 billion USD, a jump of 77.8 per cent. However, while exports rose 9.4 per cent year-onyear to 208.5 billion USD in August, China’s import growth unexpectedly fell for the second consecutive month, posting its worst performance in over a year. According to Mark Williams, Chief Asia Economist at the UK-based economic research consultancy Capital Economics, the slump is due to weakness in domestic demand, par tic ularly stemming from the slowdown in the property sector which, in turn, has hit imports. But let’s keep in mind: This is not the first time that analysts have predicted that China will surpass the US as the leading economic power, but many tend to disagree about when exactly this will happen. ARMM investment reaches record high in 3rd Quarter

COTABATO CITY – The Regional Board of Investments in the Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines on Tuesday announced P3.372 billion in new investments - more than double the investments of 1.463 billion in 2013 and jobs created by this 3rd quarter have reached 2,994 compared to last years' 1,743. It said strong economic growth in the region has attracted more investors. The RBOI said three new firms - Darussalam Mining Corporation, Al Mujahidun Agro-Resources and Development, Inc. and Bangsamoro Oil and Fuels Corporation - posted a total of P848 million worth of projects that generated 1,210 jobs. Darussalam Mining Corporation based in the village of Tumbagaan in Tawi-Tawi’s Languyan town is engaged in a P192.87 million mining and quarrying operation of nickel ore for export to China. The company generated 310 local jobs. Bangsamoro Oil and Fuels Corporation, which invested P85.85 million, is expected to provide about three dozen new jobs. The company is engaged in importation, distribution and sales of petroleum

products. It also has plans to construct an oil depot in Polloc Port in Parang town in Maguindanao province. While the Al Mujahidun Agro-Resources and Development, Inc. is a new player in the region’s banana industry. The company has initially planted with Cavendish bananas some 550 hectares in the village of Salman in Maguindanao’s Ampatuan town. The company has infused P570 million in the project and is expected to generate 867 jobs. The bananas are to be exported to the United Arab Emirates, Middle East

The first batch of 265 Muslim pilgrims had their departure for Medina, Saudi Arabia on September 8, this year, while 105 pilgrims are set to leave on September 11. This is the 10th year of implementation of the Hajj program since it was launched in 2004 as part of the Dimaporo-Quibranza initiative. MY work with politicians in the past gave me the opportunity to understand a bit their behavior as shaped by their ambitions to be in power forever that I find almost similar if not identical to the exception of those who did not have the illusion of staying in power as long as they live. Those with burning desire to remain in power even to the point of treating the public office they are occupying as being theirs as a matter of right usually end up being corrupt. Because they will do their best to accumulate more money out of the public treasury so they can practice patronage politics. Patronage politics to this type of politicians is a must because it is only by buying the loyalty of the constituency they supposedly serve that they can assure their own reelection in the next elections or the election of their successor who in all likelihood comes from their own immediate family. The problem with patronage politics is that sitting politicians will never use their own money to advance their political intentions. Practitioners of patronage politics more often than not source their funds from government coffers where they can lay their hands on. The P10 billion pork barrel scam is an example at how unscrupulous politicians source the money they distribute to their constituencies as if it’s about

Jesse E.L. Bacon II to run out of fashion. They appear generous but generous not with their own money but the people’s money to distribute them as if it is theirs. This dangerous tendency to lay their hands on the public coffers for them to have the money to dole out is inevitable because not doing so means being out of office when the next elections come. This is the type of politics where well-meaning politicians in the mold of Sen. Jovito R. Salonga and former Cebu Gov. Vicente “Tingting” de la Serna will never thrive or stay long. But this type of politics made corruption the rule in public service than the exception. The practice of patronage politics is what is sending Philippine politics to the dogs. And most of its practitioners are those who can never win in clean, honest and orderly elections. Their only ticket to public office is through vote buying, harassment and intimidation. And once they are in office, their main pre-occupation is how they can waylay the

government coffers like what robbers do with their victims. If you are wondering why politically we have not matured, blame it on patronage politics. And now here comes the godfather of patronage politics in Makati City who is not contented with being vice president now by publicly making himself available to succeed President Aquino when his term expires in 2016 Of course you all know who I am referring to. It’s Vice President Jejomar Binay, the man who now stands accused of having fleeced the coffers of the city he once served as mayor for several terms. I believe the expose at how Binay made money through corruption as alleged by former officials of that city before the Senate investigation on the matter has already destroyed his presidential ambition. As alleged by witnesses in the Senate who swore before God and man that they will tell nothing but the truth, Binay rigged the bidding process in Makati to enable him to overprice projects such as the most expensive parking building all over the world. That parking building cost the city P2.7 billion while office buildings much taller and more exquisite in style and materials used cost by one half only of the cost of the parking building. When it became preposterous for Binay to just keep on repeating his blanket denial this is merely

political demolition, they recently changed tack by saying his tenure as mayor saw the emergence of a triumvirate, two of whom testified before the Senate, who gained so much through corruption. As w h at w a s apt l y pointed out by a Philippine Daily Inquirer editorial the other day this defense only proved Binay’s incompetence to be chief executive officer if indeed during his tenure as mayor he never had any inkling that three of his subordinates were engaged in massive corruption with him not knowing it. At this point, I look at Binay’s political downfall very similar to the downfall of then presidential wannabe Manuel Villar when it was exposed that a road project received two funding allocations in one national budget at his instance. That expośe led to another expose that the road project was purposely made to pass housing subdivisions developed by Villar’s company. This expośe against Binay is definitely far worse than the one against Villar before the 2010 presidential elections. And if Villar failed to survive politically, can Binay be luckier? The hospital has 68 staff nurses, nine supervising nurses, 33 nursing attendants and seven midwives, he said. The councilor further reported that there are two dentists, three pharmacists and 13 medical technologists assisting the operations. Like other hospitals, a social welfare officer is also provided to immediately assist the needs and assess the status of indigent patients. MINDAVIEWS FROM PAST TO PRESENT: From a village to a Spanish town BY PAULITA R. ROA CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews / 22 Aug) – In 1521, the typical houses of the Cebuanos were described by Antonio Pigafetta (1536), the Italian chronicler of Ferdinand Magellan, as made of wooden planks and bamboo and raised

high on the ground on large logs. Ladders were used as means of entry and the house was divided into rooms like those in the West. Underneath the houses, the Cebuanos kept swine, fowl and goats. This was the type of houses that the Spaniards

saw lining the coast of Cebu and as one claimed, it reached the coast of Mandaue. This same kind raised houses were then commonly found near the rivers, creeks and waterways for the ancient Filipinos loved to live near bodies of water.

There were other types of houses that the early Spanish explorers saw when they ventured into the interior areas. The Recollect missionaries who were the first to enter the Cagaiang territory (Cagayan de Oro) in 1622 wrote that the 500 Kagay-

anons under their chief named Salangsang, lived on top of a cliff by a river. Their place was known as Himolugan. It was a strongly enclosed communal dwelling where each of the family had a room of their own that the priests likened to a Spanish cloister. In the middle of the communal quarters was an altar called the diwatahan that contained a wooden idol (Blair, E. and Robertson, J. vol. 21. 1903-1907). This showed that the settlement patterns of the prehispanic Filipinos were entirely different from that of the Spaniards. However, with the arrival of the Spanish conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1565, the landscape of Cebu and in most parts of the archipelago drastically changed. His troops burned the village of Cebu and later, his first official act was to inform the ruler, Tupas, that the Spaniards needed an area for a town site. When Legazpi was given a parcel of land, he drew a line demarcating the boundaries of the Spanish and Cebuano territories. On May 8, 1565, just two weeks after he and his men arrived in Cebu, he took possession of the land in the name of the Spanish king. Then the ground was broken for the construction of a triangular fort. Legazpi also marked out the sites for the Spanish quarter and the first Catholic church. He then proclaimed the establishment of the first Spanish settlement in Southeast Asia. Legazpi’s act of possession and partition of the land into a town was patterned after a typical Spanish pueblo; it was to be repeated in many places around the country. This time, a Spanish missionary was tasked to create the town known as the “reduccion” or a compact town. Armed with a cord, ruler and a few pegs, he would staked out the site for three main buildings of the new town – the church with the convento, the plaza and the Casa Real, the seat of Spanish colonial administration. The principal streets of the town would also be plotted out. That done, the priest then planted a cross in the middle of the proposed plaza and began evangelizing the people

(R. Javellana S. J. 1991). The town of Cagaiang (Cagayan de Oro) started as a reduccion in 1624 by the Spanish Recollect missionaries. By the way, this is not an ancient town as many would like to believe. In fact, the present area of the city is considered a second settlement for the first one was in Himolugan. Today, we can still see the original layout of the old town and it is in Barangay 1, the oldest area of Cagayan de Oro City. There is the church, now the St. Agustine Cathedral, the combined area of the present city tennis courts and Gaston Park, was the original the size of the original town plaza. The old building of the City Hall near the bridge stands on the site of the old Casa Real. Historians consider Cagayan de Oro among the most Hispanized towns of northern Mindanao. On the second floor of the City Museum, there is a copy of the 1739 map of the town of Cagaian which was then under the Alcalde of Zebu. The town was enclosed with a fort known as the Fuerza Real de San Jose or the Royal Fort of St. Joseph. There were neat rows of houses and well laid streets with the church at the center. It is a far cry from the typical prehispanic village that was composed only of a cluster of houses with the biggest one belonging to the village chief and usually enclosed with a wooden palisade. The creation of the town by the Spaniards was their way of “civilizing” the prehispanic Filipino and forced them to look at the former as their central authority instead of the village chief. It took a long time for the people to get adjusted to living in a town under the new foreign colonial masters. It was unlike what they were used to for it was not well suited to their needs, temperament and beliefs. That was the way it was and that was how all towns came to be in the country.
