in his speech.

BIMP-EAGA stands for Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines–East ASEAN Growth Area, a sub-regional grouping that mainly involves Mindanao and Palawan as well as other key east ASEAN areas.

Canadian Chamber eyes more business in Davao DAVAO City––The Canadian Chamber of Commerce will be opening an office in Davao City before the year ends with the aim of encouraging more investment projects between the Philippines and Canada.

“This will be the first one in Mindanao and our third in the Philippines,” said Canadian Chamber of Commerce president Julian Payne.

Payne said the the other CanCham offices are in Manila and Cebu.

While he does not wish to argue with the Canadian government which issued a travel advisory against travelling to the city and to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), he said the private sector decided to take the lead by opening an office here. The Chamber has however started to accept members in the city three years ago.

GenSan feel brunt of Manila’s truck ban GENERAL Santos City–– Business le aders here warned of drastic increases in the coming months in the prices of various commodities that are shipped through the ports of Manila if the continuing truck ban in the area will not be lifted or resolved soon.

Manuel Yaphockun, former president of the General Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (GSCCCII), said Monday a number of local businesses are now starting to feel the impact of Manila’s city-wide truck ban with the delayed shipment and deliveries of goods to the area.

He said it mainly affected the delivery of imported goods coming in through Manila’s south harbor and those manufactured in parts of Luzon that are shipped out from the north harbor.

Manila’s south harbor is the country’s main entry point for imported commodities while the north harbor caters to domestic shipping operations.

In February, the city government of Manila banned cargo trucks from its main thoroughfares from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., a move that triggered backlogs in deliveries to, through and from the ports of Manila.

Covered by the ban are cargo trucks, gravel and sand trucks, cement mixers, eight-wheelers and any truck with a gross vehicle weight of at least 4,500 kilograms.

“It now take weeks for

shipments from Manila to arrive here and the situation has so far affected the availability or supply of some vital goods,” said Yaphockun, who is among the area’s biggest suppliers of hardware and construction materials.

He said such problem specifically affected some hardware materials, some of which are imported from other countries.

Yaphockun urged the national government to look into the situation and set some remedial measures regarding the impact of the truck ban.

“This (truck ban) problem is not only affecting Manila and the neighboring areas but also us here in Mindanao,” he said.

If the problem will continue unresolved, he said it could eventually trigger significant increases in shipping and other related costs.

“Freight costs are going to go up and that means additional burden later on for our consumers,” he said.

Raymund Salangsang, GSCCCII vice president, said the truck ban could later on affect the availability and prices of some Noche Buena or Christmas holiday products.

These include ham, fruit cocktail, cheese and sandwich spread, mayonnaise, queso de bola, pasta and spaghetti, elbow and salad macaroni, spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce and creamer. philippine news agency

THE recovery of the Philippine economy in the second quarter of 2014 made one of Asia’s leading securities and investment broker maintain its outlook on the possible hitting of the government’s growth target for this year and next year.

In a research note, the company said it is keeping its 6.8 percent growth forecast for the country this year and 7.6 percent for 2015.

The government’s 2014 growth target is a range between 6.5-7.5 percent while it is seven to eight percent for 2015.

The industr y sector drove domestic output from April to June this year, which reached 6.4 percent, higher than quarter-ago’s 5.6 percent but lower than year-ago’s 7.98 percent.

The research note expects the continued six percent-level growth for the domestic economy in the second half of the year as it expects the recovery in government spending among others.

second quarter of the year was led by the agriculture, manufacturing and exports while construction and retail trade slowed.

It also noted that problems caused by port congestion issue, due mainly to the expanded truck ban in the City of Manila that started last February, will be addressed.

“Thus, we believe the composition of growth will revert to one led by domestic demand, supported by net primary income, mostly remittances from overseas Filipinos,” it added.

Relatively, Bank of the Philippine Island (BPI) lead economist Emilio Neri Jr. maintained the bank’s 6.2 percent growth forecast for the country this year on back of projected improvements in domestic financial conditions, which in turn will support consumption.

“The faster-than-expected print for second quarter of helps reduce uncertainty about the sustainability of the Philippine economy’s surprisingly strong performance in the last few years,” Neri said in a research note.

The research note cited

that growth in the second quarter of the year was led by the agriculture, manufacturing and exports while construction and retail trade slowed.

“We will not be surprised if this will actually lead to an improvement in employment and poverty statistics this year vs. 2013,” it said.

With the expected sustained growth of the domestic economy, Neri said this gives the central bank’s policy-making Monetary Board (MB) leeway to further increase the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP)

Rate of price increases last July surged to 4.9 percent, almost hitting the upper end of the government’s three to five percent target for 2014, while average for the year stood at 4.3 percent.

(This case is also popular in the local political arena).

It was also intriguing for the witness – Binay’s former Vice Mayor – to admit without batting an

course. But the overarching consideration is the candidate’s his skill in prying the public coffers loose when in office and his readiness to spread the loot around. ***** In the trapo’s calculus, these are what make for winnability in a candidate.

Trapo mentality and winnability

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– With politics heating up in anticipation of the 2016 elections, it may be useful to review the playing field and the tricks of the game, including the mindset of traditional politicians (trapos).

A trapo looks at politics the same way he views cockfights, beauty pageants, and sports-fests. His yardstick is “winnability” – a concept having less to do with competence or character as with name-recall, wealth, popularity, or connections.

Generally it doesn’t matter to a trapo whether a candidate is incompetent, a crook, or lives a scandalous life; if his name rings bells and cash registers, and he’s willing to spend, he’s the man!

Pinoys in trouble abroad: how to help them LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…

All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you listen to, and obey, the LORD your God…” (Deuteronomy 28:2, the Holy Bible).

-oooTROUBLE FOR PINOYS IN THE WORLD: News headlines during the last five days have been dealing with unfortunate stories of Filipinos facing serious threats to their lives while they are working abroad.

The first story is about 40 or so Filipino soldiers working as members of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Syria, who managed to escape death from Syrian rebels only by fleeing in the dead of the night.

The second story is about two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have been sentenced to die after they were found guilty of cocaine trafficking in Vietnam. In fact, there is also the story

Atty. Batas Mauricio of another OFW, Antonio Espares, who was beheaded in Libya much earlier. On top of all of these, there are countless other stories of misfortune befalling other OFWs in other parts of the world, but which are no longer reported.

Indeed, our countrymen, whose only fault was to seek gainful employment in foreign soils because there are no opportunities for them in the Philippines, will continue to suffer and be killed.

This is a curse which was predicted to happen by the Bible a long time ago. We can read about this curse against our children being given to other nations and suffering pain and death while we are unable to help them, in Deuteronomy 28:15 and 32.

-oooCURSES FOR PINOYS WORKING ABROAD: For the non-Bible readers, here is what Deuteronomy 28:15 provides: “However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you…”

Deuteronomy 28:32 says, on the other hand: “Your sons and daughters will be given to other nations, and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand…” In fact,

Deuteronomy 28:41 warns of a similar catastrophe in this manner: “You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.”

Then, there is actually a third curse for OFWs, which is a curse for the entire Filipino nation as well who has taken pride in treating our children as exports. This is the curse of broken families, represented by marital infidelity, both for the OFWs and their spouses who are left behind, which is raised in Deuteronomy 28:15 and 30: “You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her. You will build a house, but you will not live in it.”

-oooTHE ONLY WAY TO HELP OFWs: And if we think more carefully about it, there is a fourth curse for OFWs, likewise already warned about in the Bible,

Giving Higalaay a Try I

never thought the Higalaay Festival would create such an impact on me.

For one, I was able to take part in one of the major events this year, the Cagayan de Oro Carnival Parade as one of the event hosts.

It may not seem much but what I saw and experienced that day is beyond the perks of being seen up on stage but experiencing firsthand the wonders of friendship and camaraderie.

The festive atmosphere of the street merrymaking invigorated everyone even with the heat and humidity that day.

You can see people from all walks of life coming together to celebrate friendship through dance and music, smiling at the sights of the performers and cheering them on as they paraded their way to the front of the stage set up at the heart of Plaza Divisoria.

The parade is indeed a show of Higalaay, a manifestation that we can come together and have clean fun.

On a personal level, the Higalaay season also was a way for me to rekindle ties and foster new friendship. The pocket events and other activities lined up during the month allowed me to mingle with a wide variety of personalities, reuniting with people I have known for years and establishing new relationships with the ones I meet along the way.

This month, I have set aside differences and did not mind affiliations just so we can all have a wonderful and eventful celebration.

This move proved to be a good thing, it unburdened me and made me appreciate how wonderful it is to put weight on good relations than petty feelings.

This indeed made this Higalaay

festival a personal journey to a better understanding of how amazing life is if we continue to become better versions of ourselves every day.

Higalaay is also a time for wonderful victories for my friends and our Liceo family. Back to back victories in all three major beauty and personality pageants held annually in CdeO is indeed a blessing to be grateful about.

Miss Cagayan de Oro 2014, The Man of Himologan 2014, and the ultimate Barangay Gwapo for this year hail from the same university where I come from.

I may not be directly involved in all three in their bid for the big win but I share the same joy for their victory. Aside from this grandslam feat, the Liceo Dragon Boat team and their supporters from the dance companies of Liceo U emerged as second place in the Carnival Parade hurdling challenges of limited rehearsal schedule and pre-contest preparations.

Their participation was also a show of force, unity and determination of the students and staff which I am blessed to have seen and felt.

When the City rebranded the festival last year, I was wondering why. Now I do not have to seek answers for I have been able to actualize what it is like to make friends, keep friends and be friends. What I was able to experience, share and cherish this month is more than enough for me to look forward to another Higalaay in 2015.

Will it be grander and bigger? For sure it will. All it takes is for all of us to continue the friendship and embrace new ones.

Environment advocates say ice-bucket challenge wastes water

DAVAO City––Environment advocates here pointed out that while the ice bucket challenge in support of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research has raised awareness on the disease, it has wasted lots of water.

Water consumption for the campaign on ALS— an incurable neuro-degenerative disorder that causes paralysis and eventually death–has already reached some six million gallons.

Journalist Jason Ruiz from the Long Beach Post in California computed the figures using five gallons of water per 1.2 million participants to the challenge who shared their videos.

Education dept slammed for removing ‘God-loving’ phrase tuesday, september 2,

TAGUM City––Religious groups slammed the Department of Education after it removed the phrase “God-loving” in its 2013 vision statement.

No less than the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Friday issued a statement as it lamented and described the situation as “unfortunate.”

In its 2013 version, “there is no more mention of God, nor of the salutary fear of Him that, Scripture tells us, is the beginning of all wisdom,” CBCP President and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said in a statement.

According to the Philstar.com, the older DepEd vision states: “By 2030, DepEd is globally recognized for good governance and for developing functionally-literate

and God-loving Filipinos.”

The new vision which the DepEd posted on its social networking account reads: “We dream of Filipinos who passionately love their country and whose values and competencies enable them to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to building the nation.”

Villegas maintained that the “formation of God-fearing pupils and students is a vision that cannot be surrendered”.

“A vision statement is not an empty platitude. It guides the articulation of policy. It orients plans of action,” Villegas lamented.

Archbishop Villegas stressed that the right of a child to recognize and love God “are not harmful to anyone else, believer or not as our pluralistic society accords respect for the option of some to believe and for others not to.”

Filipinos for Life, a Manila-

based Christian Lay group also criticized the Department of Education for “acceding without discerning” after it removed the “God-fearing” phrase in DepEd’s vision statement reportedly upon the request of atheist group in the Philippines—the Filipino Freethinkers.

“Believing in God does not hurt nor disturb anyone. DepEd should have realized the impact it will give to a nation that is known to be religious and firm in faith,” said Dr. Ricardo Boncan, spokesman for Filipinos for Life.

Boncan said that even the 1987 Constitution “invokes the aid of God” as stated in its preamble.

“When did the belief in God prove harmful to man?” he asked.

Public school teacher Janice Corsiho, 35, said “it is very alarming. Slowly, DepEd is becoming an instrument of non-believers already.”

Another teacher Harry Talapiero, 27, said “DepEd chose the wisdom of this world and listened to the godless society.

Our education department is governed by fools because fools don’t believe in God.” On Friday, the DepEd in a statement, said its “new VMV should be regarded as one document to be appreciated in its entirety.”

This as DepEd admitted that it removed the phrase “God-fearing” but its core values still retains the word “Maka-Diyos.”

“The term God-loving is synonymous with Maka-Diyos. The term Maka-Diyos is essentially connected with Maka-tao, Makakalikasan and Makabansa and allows our Values Education teachers to develop modules that will hopefully form persons of integrity. It warns against pietism or ritualism and encourages per-

sons of faith to live those convictions everyday, everywhere,” the DepEd said.

DepEd explained that the removal of the word “God-loving” was a result of discussion revising DepEd Vision, Mission, Values as early as 2010.

“A series of consultations was conducted with key persons in various levels of the organization, including the regions and school divisions,” DepEd said.

DepEd added that the DepEd Order No. 36 s. 2013 was issued “in order to update the Agency’s directions and further strengthen our capacity to fulfill our constitutional mandate. The review of our Vision and Mission was anchored on the Filipino Core Values of Maka-Diyos, Maka-Tao, Makakalikasan and Makabansa as articulated in Section 40, Republic Act 8491.” (Mart D. The union claims the LBC management is not complying with CBA provisions related to benefits and regularization of employees.

The union also hit the management’s “tactics” of quelling the union’s campaign to end the company’s “unfair sanctions policy” and its persistent efforts to discredit union president Butch Gajudo who has been slapped with numerous complaints.

Butch Gajudo, president of LBCDEU-ADLO-KMU, says they are sending a clear message to the LBC management that the workers are united and ready to protect their rights under the law.

“We are also calling on management to respect the law by respecting our union, our leaders, and to stop all acts of harassment against us,” Gajudo said.

The regional chapter of labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno in Southern Mindanao expressed support

to LBC union’s campaign.

Romualdo Basilio, secretary general of KMU Southern Mindanao, said that everywhere in the country today, genuine trade unions and union leaders are targets of attacks and unfair labor practice. He lamented what

he calls as “a climate that is repressive to genuine trade unionism.”

Aside from what the union and its leaders in LBC have complained about, 24 union leaders of electronic firm NXP in Laguna were illegally dismissed in the middle of its negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. They are now fighting for reinstatement.

In Davao, Basilio said union stalwarts Carl Anthony Olalo and the Berdera

brothers of MPSI have also been illegally dismissed.

Other leaders are being slapped with trumped-up murder charges such as the Maragusan DOLE Stanfilco union leaders, Artemio Robilla and Danilo Delegencia. Unionists are also “red-baited and maliciously linked” to the communist movement such as in the case of the RMN Davao Employees Union, Basilio said.

ARMM relief arm helps Maguindanao flood victims COTABATO CITY - The relief arm of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) has been attending to the needs of about 25,000 persons affected by floods that hit 85 villages in Maguindanao’s 11 municipalities, the ARMM humanitarian office said Monday.

District Cong. Rolando Uy said that barangay officials have started extending relief to the victims who have evacuated to the West City Central School Sunday evening.

In Misamis Oriental, about 100 people, mostly from the province’s west and east districts, have been evacuated as the rivers overflowed and flash flood occurred in some of the province’s coastal towns.

Edmundo Pacamalan, Jr. the provincial administrator, said that the flash flood also destroyed three houses in the outskirts of Nangka-on in the municipal town of Opol.

He said that the evacuation also took place in the component city of El Salvador and Manticao in the western district

and in the province east district of Lagonglong and Binuangan.

Pacamalan said that the province risk reduction management council immediately dispatched relief operations as Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano ordered a 24/7 alert to Misamis Oriental’s 424 villages.

He said that the provincial government has been in close contact with all the risk reduction officers of the province 424 villages at the height of the heavy rains Sunday evening.

Weather officials said that a Low Pressure Area (LPA) has spawned the heavy rains Sunday afternoon, which resulted in the overflow of rivers and flash floods apart from isolated landslides in Northern Mindanao.

SP to start review of Oro’s Revenue Code next week THE 17th City Council headed by Vice Mayor Caesar Ian E. Acenas, through the joint committees on finance and ways and on trade, commerce and cooperatives chaired by Councilors President D. Elipe and Edna Dahino, will soon start to review the provisions of the 2003 Revenue Code of Cagayan de Oro for possible amendments and modification.

Councilors Elipe and Dahino favorably endorsed this for approval on first reading, which will be acted upon during the regular session this afternoon.

Broadcasters spearhead tree planting in ‘Magdiwata’

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur—Local radio broadcasters in the province is doing away from the government ningas cogon habit by planting trees and nurture them until they will really survive in the small portion of denuded areas of Mt. Magdiwata watershed.

This is what members of Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng Pilipinas (KBP) Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur Chapters did on Saturday when they led the planting of some 2,000 Philippine mahogany tree seedlings together with hundreds of college students in different schools ,workers of local environment offices of this town and even policemen and Army soldiers.

The event ,dubbed as “Oplan 2014 : Broadcastreeing”, is part of nationwide simultaneous annual activity of the KBP. “This was a no-nonsense tree planting activity that is not just a theatrical showcase. We will make sure that almost all seedlings will survive, “ Max Tutor, station manager of 96.1 “San Franz Radio” FM and local KBP chairman, said.

To make good on their commitment to sustain the activity, the local KBP chapter signed a memorandum of agreement with San Francisco Water District (SFWD) to jointly closely monitor the growth of the trees around the three-hectare sloppy area near the boundary of the 1,700-hectare watershed.

Based on the agreement, SFWD will provide technical assistance to ensure an almost 100 percent survival of the tree seedlings, frequent visit by the foresters in the area for 45 days while KBP will continue monitoring

their growth onwards every 45 days until another “broadcastreeing” event next year.

SFWD serves as the main caretaker of the protected watershed and takes pride of totally regenerating the already heavily denuded mountain from what used to be only 30 percent forest cover about two decades ago to now 97 percent lush greenery.

The local water service utility has attained a 98 percent track record of the survival rate of the thousands of trees planted inside the mountain and courageously took the risky forefront of going after illegal logging and illegal mining activities in the watershed and at the buffer zone.

KBP and SFWD officials said the event would make it different from the massive tree planting of at least 4.6 million simultaneous done in just an hour throughout Mindanao in September 26.

Spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Mindanao Development Authority , the event, which is part of the government’s National Greening Program, attempts to break the Guinness World Record for most trees planted.

Elmer Luzon, SFWD general manager, said the tree planting activity with KBP is just as good in their consistent commitment to target at least 100 percent survival rate, unlike the NGP which he believed got a dismal 35 percent failure in the province.

“It has been our mission that if our survival rate would go below 90 percent, then we consider it a failure,” Luzon said.

He said SFWD has not adopted the DENR geotagging system since this will not truly reflect the real presence of planted trees in the mountain and instead send foresters and forest guards to do an actual counting of trees and make a chart map in every tree planting area.

Police kill arrested Sayyaf man in Sabah kidnappings

AMBOANGA CITY – Policemen killed a key Abu Sayyaf member arrested in the southern Philippine province Tawi-Tawi in connection to the spate of kidnappings and murder in Sabah, Malaysia, reports said.

Malaysia’s The Star Online reported that Mobin Hailil alias Kahumbo, who was arrested in Bongao town on August 26, had been shot dead allegedly after grabbing the gun of one of his escorts while on their way to jail from a court appearance on August 29.

The 44-year old Hailil was charged with illegal possession of firearm and explosives after police commandos and soldiers seized a pistol and a grenade from him during his arrest.

Hailil is also being linked to the killing of a Malaysian policeman Kpl Rajah Jamuan, 32, on Mabul Water Bungalow Resort during an Abu Sayyaf raid in July this year. Rajah’s companion Kons Zakiah Alejp, 26, was kidnapped by the Abu

Sayyaf and is being held for ransom in southern Philippines.

The Star Online exclusive report said Tawi-Tawi police chief Joe Salido has ordered an investigating into the killing of Hailil.

Quoting from a police report it obtained, The Star Online said that Hailil was killed when he allegedly tried to escape while being escorted under heavy guard in Bongao town.

The police report said “the suspect pulled the firearm of a security team member and resisted. That gave reason for the security team to shoot Kahumbo, resulting in his instant death.

Team medics immediately applied first aid and brought Kahumbo to the hospital but he was declared DOA

(dead on arrival).”

The Star Online also quoted an unidentified intelligence source from TawiTawi that claimed Hailil was killed to prevent him from bailing out of prison.

“They said that it would have been difficult to find him guilty in court as he had the protection of someone influential in southern Philippines. It would be difficult to find him guilty on either illegal possession of weapons or kidnapping. Security forces know that he would eventually be freed and that is why they executed him,” the source said.

It was unknown whether police and military had completed its interrogation on Hailil, or whether he was killed to silence him. Abu Sayyaf prisoners are usually transported to Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City while charges are being prepared or for further interrogation, especially those involved in high profile cases such as the Sabah kidnappings.

Director Datuk Ahmad Nadzer Nordin said at least 14 groups from southern Philippines were involved in cross-border kidnappings in Sabah.

“As an urban operative, he would be familiar with places like Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Semporna,” Dinampo, who was kidnapped in June 2008, told The Star Online, adding that Hailil would blend in with the Tausug and Yakan communities in these districts.

“These operatives use their knowledge to identify possible kidnap victims and watch their movements as

well as the fast boats to be used in the abductions,” he said, adding, any information from Hailil would enable Philippine security officials to know the inner workings of the Abu Sayyaf.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abd Rahman earlier tagged brothers as Nilson and Badong Muktadil as among those involved in kidnappings in Sabah. The two brothers were also linked to the raid on Mabul Water Bungalow Resort.

Malaysia’s Star Online also quoted Jalaluddin as saying that the brothers were part of a kidnap-forransom group based in Tawi-Tawi province. They were believed to be involved in the April 2 kidnapping of Chinese tourist, Gao Huayun, 29, and Filipino worker Marcy Darawan, 40, from the Singamata Reef Resort off Semporna in Sabah. PNPA sets Sept. 26 deadline for Cadet Admission Test applications

Applicants must be a natural-born Filipino citizen, single with no parental obligation, 18 years old and not more than 22 years old on April 15, 2015. Height requirement for male is 5 feet and 4 inches and 5 feet and 2 inches for female with weight which corresponds to the applicant’s height, gender and age.

Special Forces commander dies in Basilan clash

Z A M B OA NG A C I T Y – A Special Forces commander, who was wounded in clash with Abu Sayyaf militants in the troubled Basilan province in southern Philippines, had died before dawn Sunday while being airlifted to hospital in Zamboanga City, officials said.

Officials said Captain Mark Gamboa, of the 14th Special Forces Com-

pany, clashed at around 7 p.m. on Saturday with militants led by Halang alias Commander Jeck in the village of Calusugan in Lantawan town.

The fighting lasted only 10 minutes and it was unknown if there were enemy casualties.

Gamboa was hit in the arm by a bullet that penetrated his body organs.

Soldiers, who reinforced the officer’s unit

an hour later, brought him to the army headquarters in Isabela City where US troops provided him first aid while waiting for a helicopter to transport Gamboa to Zamboanga City.

Gamboa was airlifted shortly midnight to the Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City, but died before reaching the military hospital there. The Western

Degala said that while she empathizes with the cause for finding a cure for ALS, she also urged them to think also of people in Africa.

“Think of the buckets you waste, how many families would line up to drink for that,” she said.

One of the places is Burundi, a country in central Africa sandwiched between Rwanda and Congo, where she spent three years in her mission work in the last decade.

For a country where water can only be found in 8% of its land area, Degala said the main source of water for some eight million Burundi people comes from rain.

But when the occasional heat wave comes to Burundi where it leaves the country without rain for three to six days, Degala said “people would go crazy.”

Mary Ann Fuertes, executive director of Interface Development Interventions, shared the same concern, as her group is making headway to make the city implement a rainwater catchbasin practice to save rainwater for household use.

“It’s a waste of precious freshwater. As of now in just three months more than a million people are taking the challenge. Just imagine how many liters of precious water are being wasted. So many families could be supplied with such amount of water, ” said Fuertes.

Hollywood actor Matt Damon joined this campaign but used toilet water to raise awareness of his other advocacy that 800 million people around the world are suffering from lack of access to clean and safe water.

The ALS Association, who is the beneficiary of the bucket challenge, has gathered more than $90-million in donations, which they will spend mostly on education and research.

The ice bucket campaign has gone viral through social media such as Facebook and YouTube. And with the Filipinos’ active use of such social media, the country is ranked eighth by Facebook with the most participants for the challenge.

Not only celebrities in the country took part in the challenge, but also government officials including Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Bureau of Internal Revenue commissioner Kim Henares and former Governor Chavit Singson among others. Each donated $100 for the ALS Association.

In Davao City, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte took part in the challenge. He nominated his sister former mayor Sara Duterte, but she declined saying she would prefer donating for the cause without going through the ordeal.

But Matanog said that the collection is not enough to cover the losses of the electric cooperative in terms of loan obligation which amounted to P8 billion.
