Exporters recommend to explore halal production for BIMP-EAGA Arnuco added that the Freeport is positioning itself to be the gateway to BIMPEAGA, a growth region of over 57 million consumers where Islam is a dominant religion and halal-processed foods and goods are in high demand.

In a recent presentation in Makati City, he said the Zambozone is making enhancements to the site and providing attractive incentives as it gears up to become a key halal manufacturing hub in the area.

The ecozone is comprised of three development sites with a total land area of

16,120 hectares. These are the 1st Industrial Park (64 hectares), the 2nd Industrial Park (664 hectares), and their latest development project the Zamboecozone Highlands (15,391 hectares).

The executive said 100 hectares of land at the 2nd Industrial Park have been reserved and will be developed as a dedicated halalprocessing area.

He clarified that halal production is not just about food products, but involves other products and services as well, including pharmaceuticals, ingredients and additives, cosmetics, animal

feeds, drugs and vaccines, Islamic finance, and logistics.

Moreover, he said, “the potential of halal products and services is not only limited to Muslim consumers but also gaining increasing acceptance among non-Muslims, as consumers normally perceive halal products as having undergone stringent inspection and standard control in terms of ingredients used, strict safety and hygiene specifications and sanitation procedures.”

The ecozone chief continued that the Freeport can be a base for exporters “to serve the growing global

consumer demands for halal products, services, and solutions” as well as “capitalize on its competitive advantages to promote halal industries as the emerging engine of growth.”

To attract companies to the ecozone, Arnuco said the agency is offering a slew of fiscal incentives that include tax- and duty-free importation of goods, 5% tax rate from gross income earned, and income tax holiday of six years for pioneer industries, four years for non-pioneer industries, and three years for other industries.

Non-fiscal perks include

lower-than-market lease and rental rates, 50 years’ guaranteed lease period renewable for another 25 years, and 100% foreign ownership of enterprises.

The economic zone can “provide the needs of investors and businesses, link them with the most integrated supply chain solutions while maintaining the most conducive investment environment,” he continued.

While the ecozone’s current market is domestic, “with the ASEAN integration, markets will be opened and crossborder trade will increase,” he said. (PHILEXPORT)

Ronel Baroy, Lala’s municipal agriculturist, said that the benefit of the said facilities cannot be stressed enough.

Before, he said that some of the farmers travel as far as Iligan City just to dry their rice produce. “Aside from transportation cost,

the hauling cost of 20 pesos per sack would add up to their burden,” he said.

Lala has 500 hectares of land for rice production with 181 farmers who used to make do with only two solar dryers and two warehouses for storage owned by private traders.

“The solar dryer really helped the farmers a lot because aside from drying their produce they can now also command the right price for their rice,” Baroy said.

The rice could also be stocked safely in the storage facility before it is sold, he added.

“Since we can now dictate the price, our income has really increased. Before, we were at the mercy of the

trader,” said Enterina.

He encourage d t he farmers to contribute to the project’s sustainability by drying their produce in the cooperative’s facilities.

Another CFAD subproject in Lala was also turned over to another cooperative, the Lanipao Lala Livelihood Farmers Association (LANLALIFA) based in the brgy.

Lanipao, which also availed of the same postharvest facilities.

PV lending guidelines developed for bankers, investors in ASEAN

Bankers and investors often have few investment experiences and references to realistically assess the risks which are related to, for example, project design or technology choices.

The training included hands-on experiences in assessing non-financial and technical risks from a banker’s perspective. Participants were provided with a practical checklist for risk assessment which they can apply for their future investment decisions.

hree Filipinos were recently nabbed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) for attempting to subscribe to mobile postpaid plans of Smart and Sun Cellular using falsified documents.

Arrested during separate entrapment operations led by the PNP, and Smart and Sun officials, were Ader del

Rosario y Deniega alias Paul Ducusin Valera, Julie Rose de Ocampo y Maningat alias “Maria Angelica Merres”, and Michael Fiere y Enfantado alias “Marc Anthony Alcones,” “Allan Orpresio.”

Del Rosario was apprehended at the Smart Store in SM Manila, while de Ocampo and Fiere were accosted at the Sun Cellular

Shop in Shangri-La Edsa Plaza Mall, after the suspects’ fraudulent activities, which included the use of bogus IDs and registration documents.

Police have recommended the filing of charges against the three individuals for swindling using fictitious name and concealing true name and falsification

of public documents. The three are now detained as the filing of criminal charges is ongoing.

As part of its ongoing campaign to address telco scams, officials of Smart and Sun Cellular continue to work closely with the PNP for the identification and entrapment of fraudsters and other unscrupulous

individuals.

These measures complement the organizations’ sustained efforts to protect mobile subscribers, which involve a massive information campaign on how users can detect and prevent text and pasaload scams.

Both companies have also recently introduced security features to their

mobile load services to deter ‘pasaload’ scammers, who mislead subscribers into transferring load credits to them by way of bogus promos or discounts. Under the new system, Smart and Sun Cellular subscribers are required to confirm “pasaload” requests to ensure they are aware of such transactions.
