Women club of NorCot learn meat processing procedures By Edwin O. Fernandez

IDAPAWAN City - To be able to provide their members with adequate skills on meat processing, the Rural Improvement Club (RIC) of Magpet, North Cotabato in partnership with the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and Magpet LGU conducted a 2-day meat processing for its members, officials said. About 25 participants, all women-members of RIC – Magpet residing in different villages were trained on the techniques and tips on meat process-
ing and the technology applied in processed meat products. Mag p e t Mu n i c ip a l Mayor Florenito T. Gonzaga, came during the first day of the training and lauded the participants for allotting time in the training which he said would definitely help a lot in starting a small livelihood. Mayor Gonzaga thanked the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG) for sending Marivic Supena, Food Laboratory In-Charge of OPAG and in charge of the lectures for the 2-day training sessions.
“This is an opportunity for RIC – Magpet members to gain knowledge on meat processing which they can apply back home and start with a small livelihood, much thanks to the Provincial Government of Cotabato for engaging our constituents with a helpful training,” Mayor Gonzaga said. For her part, Supena said the training on meat processing is simple and practical and can always be applied by the participants. “Here in the training, the participants will learn the basic things related to
meat processing such as meat cutting, chopping and mixing. Also on how to use spices and nonmeat additives correctly in order to come up with a well-processed meat,” Supena said in the interview of the “Aksiyon Serbisyong Totoo” radio program of the Provincial Government of North Cotabato Processing some alltime meat favorites such as “embotido,” “tocino,” “ham,” “sio-mai” and “tapa” are featured in the training. RIC – Magpet coordinator Nelly Anit, also a participant of the skills
training said the club is excited enough to gain additional skills from the activity. She believes that the 2-day training will enable the members of RICMagpet to start with small business ventures and will help them to earn an extra income for the family. She also attributed the conduct of the training to the support given by Gov. Emmylou “Lala” J. TaliñoMendoza whom she said extended much help to make the training happen by mandating the OPAG to facilitate the activity. “In behalf of the club,
I would like to thank Gov. Taliño-Mendoza, a truly service and result-oriented leader for giving us the chance to learn and become more productive as individuals,” Anit added. She also said that apart from the training, they can also avail of the newly launched Serbisyong Totoo Entrepreneurial Program or STEP which aims to help small-time entrepreneurs in securing much-needed capital. Aside from training, the provincial government is mulling extending startup capital for the club members. (PNA

Have your work or effort been copied by your officemate or boss, and claim the work as their own? Worst, they even claim that they created it and made money out of it. In other words, they benefited out of your hard work. If you have experienced it, you are not alone. Recently, I visited a site and was very impressed with the writer; he literary thinks the way I think and writes the way I write. As I continue to read the blogs, I then realized that I was reading my own blog. Odd? Or Ironic? I discovered that there is a blogger, who I refuse to name, just blatantly cut, paste, and copied all my work. Not only that, it is word per word and claiming those to be his. As most of my followers know, I blog on a daily basis. I post all my blogs at my personal and fan page account on Facebook. I never post any blogs to my personal site since I am going to launch my new site comes December. I plan to post all my blogs soon on my personal webpage. I spend countless of hours writing my daily blogs. It is time away from
my family and love ones. I am disciplined to write the blogs even if there are times I don’t feel it. On a daily basis, I make time to write it despite of my hectic schedule. It is my passion to write and I know that there are many who are following my blogs. I am compelled to write for I believe that I am able to encourage and touch the lives of many, even our ‘kababayans’ from abroad. For those who are claiming the work of others as your own, let me give you a warning: “WHAT YOU SOW IS WHAT YOU WILL REAP.” If you sow good seeds you will reap good fruits. If you sow bad seeds you will reap bad fruits. It is impossible for you to reap a tomato, if you sow a potato. Of course , if you plant a potato, you will reap a potato. It is really so sad to know people claiming to be professionals, experts, and ethical; but are not. It really saddens me for some people to claim they are motivating others by claiming other peoples had work. They want to rise to fame by cutting corners by leveraging off other peoples effort. There is no short cut to success; it takes time, patience, diligence, hard work, and CHARACTER. My mentor Francis J. Kong reminded me this, “Chinkee, you can lose everything but one thing that all of us need to preserve is our CHARACTER & INTEGRITY.” You can be the most talented and gifted person in the world, but if you don’t have CHARACTER & INTEGRITY, YOU ARE NOTHING!

ast November 20, a new bunker fueled power plant was inaugurated in General Santos City that would ensure no brownouts for the Socsargen region during the upcoming Christmas season and on through the hot summer months and beyond. The 20.9MW peaking power plant of Peakpower Socsargen Inc. (PSI) will supply the peaking power needs of South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative (SOCOTECO II) in General Santos City, the municipalities of Glan, Malapatan, Alabel, Makungon, Kiamba, Maasim and Maitum in Sarangani and Polomolok and Tupi in South Cotabato. “This means that the people of Gensan and those within the franchise area of SOCOTECO-II will be able to hopefully have zero brownouts this coming Christmas,” said PSI President Roel Z. Castro. Dr. Walter W. Brown, PSI Chairman, said the plant would provide 20MW of the 120MW peak load of SOCOTECO-II and committed to expand it by an additional 15MW by next year. Modified IMEM can dampen brownouts If Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho L. Petilla manages to have the modified Intermediate Mindanao Electricity Market (IMEM) restored as soon as possible, he is convinced brownouts in most areas of the Mindanao would likewise be eradicated, “Even if the Aboitiz 300MW coal fired power plant becomes operational, not all of it will be directly injected into the grid because around 140MW have been secured by Davao Light which has not been experiencing brownouts and no urgent need for additional electricity like the cooperatives,” Petilla said. “I suspect they will replace their diesel plants with coal fired energy so it’s not sure if there will be any net addition to the grid. “The best way to tap the capacities of these diesel plants is through an electricity market, which we’re saying now is IMEM,” he stressed. “What we want is to make all that capacity available through a market. man sila? Wala lang,” Petilla said in an impromptu press conference following the Peakpower launch. Demand Side Bidding “Now we passed to ERC with major changes you pointed out. Your complaints were actually fair. One of the biggest features to be included in the modified IMEM is Demand Side Bidding,” Petilla said. Under the modified IMEM Rules of Demand Side Bidding, distribution utilities and industries are allowed to post their desired prices for their power needs and if the suppliers can’t meet it, they will not be compelled to buy any electricity. "If the supply is less than the demand, market should be suspended kasi magkakaipitan sa prices. However, we are implementing demand bidding in Mindanao, walang ipitan ito," Petilla said, stressing that utilities and industries who insist on their price should have other options ready in case no IMEM supplier picks up their offer. “I just hope ERC will release it before summer when we really need it. We need the support of the coops and industry players to make it happen,” he added. “With demand side bidding, the distribution utilities (DUs) will only get the power at the bid price put out,” commented a power advocate from Zamboanga City who preferred to remain anonymous. “Hence, the DUs are better placed to know how much the additional power is worth to them. Technically, the DUs cannot be complaining of high power prices.” “Another aspect to the power industry is for the DOE/ ERC to implement “open access" for big loaders come

Merchant Plants Petilla said a restored IMEM would encourage Independent Power Producers (IPPs) like Peakpower to set up merchant plants if they like the way the market is behaving. “While there will be many new plants opening soon in Mindanao, most of them are baseload plants. I’d like to encourage more peaking plants because in the end, you cannot just rely on baseload plants. There will never be enough if there is no demand and you’re left with the peaking part hanging.” “That’s where we are when it comes to the situation in Mindanao. The IMEM will also encourage peaking plants because that’s the way to encourage them,” he added. Petilla said Mindanao particularly needs an electricity market because every time there’s a shortage of out from its hydroelectric power plants, the Gensan and Zamboanga areas gets to experience rotating brownouts first because electric coops in the area will always be the last to be served and first allocation to be cut. “With the IMEM we are pushing, the dispatch protocol will be documented and evaluated so we can install discipline in the protocol so those at the end of the line don’t get the short end of the stick,” the energy czar said. “And finally I’d like to tell you the relevance of Peakpower. There are many plants coming in but I’m worried there are not enough peak-
ing plants. In the future we will need many plants across cooperatives because that is the best way to make adjustments when our demand and supply don’t meet each other every now and then.” “I hope we have more plants like this because this is what we really need in this area of Mindanao because our interconnection to either Leyte or Negros will not happen until 2018 at the earliest. I hope we will also have the support of the people of Mindanao when it comes to this. The DOE earlier projected Mindanao to continue suffering from brownouts until new capacities come online in 2015. Based on the Mindanao Power Situation Outlook of the Mindanao Power Monitoring Committee (MPMC), the Mindanao grid will have a projected available capacity of 2,208 MW in 2015, versus a projected peak demand of 1,583 MW. The period 2016-2020 is also similarly projected to result in an excess of available supply versus actual demand. Although the DOE earlier said in its website the Mindanao grid would be ready for WESM operations once new capacities come in by 2015, Petilla said this is not so. Still no WESM “We cannot go to WESM because we don’t have an interconnection between Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. If we have a market here, I cannot call it a WESM because it’s actually isolated. The IMEM is almost the same as WESM but will not go outside of Mindanao because there’s no interconnection.” “The difference now is in Luzon there is almost no government plant, here the biggest plant is the government. That’s why we have to put IMEM because there are rules which need to be apply only in Mindanao. And especially what we will put in is the Demand Side Bidding. In Manila you only put your load requirement and take the market price. Here, they are afraid IMEM would make power more expensive.” IMEM Oppositors Oppositors of the IMEM are convinced it would result in unnecessarily high power rates in Mindanao when in fact, consumers can access the same capacities at a much lower prince.

total of 66 college and high school students joined the Northern Mindanao Journalism Excellence Awards actual writing contest which was held yesterday at the ICT Bldg. AVR inside the campus of Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST). The bulk of the students are secondary ones who participated in the feature writing category on the topic War Hero, numbering 21. There were also nine high school students for news writing category, seven high school students who joined the sports writing category, seven high school students for science writing category, six college students for photojournalism category, six high school students for business reporting category, five college students for news writing category, three college students for science writing category and two high school students for the photojournalism category. The high school students who joined the photojournalism category trooped to nearby Limketkai Mall to snap shots there while their college counterparts went to the Gardens of Malasag. Prior to the contest, Department of Tourism (DOT) 10 promotions chief Decius Esmedalla urged the students to concentrate on how to promote more the image of Mindanao
in writing their tourism stories. Esmedalla said that Cagayan de Oro in particular is in dire need of more hotels as hosting of international and national conventions here cannot cope with the constant influx of convention delegates year-round. He also said that the tourism industry in Northern Mindanao must also brace itself to be at par with Asean standards as the country will integrate itself into the whole Southeast Asian economy by next year. Esmedalla likewise took note of the shortage of tour guides in the city, saying there are many domestic and foreign tourists here but accredited tour guides are less. For his part, A Brown Company community relations manager Rufino Magbanua urged the participants to focus more on the electricity industry in their science stories. Magbanua said articles such as new technology to harness power on a large scale will be more impressionable to the judges. The entries were submitted and will be judged on a separate date. Awarding will be this December 27, 2014 at SM City Cagayan de Oro. The 1st Northern Mindanao Journalism Excellence Awards is a search for the best non-mainstream media writers of
