New minimum wage hike takes effect December 1 D Volume III, No. 154

AVAO City - Labor and Employment director Atty. Jeoffrey Suyao of Davao Region announced the effectivity of the P5 cost of living allowance for all minimumwage workers on December 1, 2014.

He said the new Cola is part of the second tranche of minimum wage adjustment due to the implementation of the Wage Order No. 18 in June 1 raising the pay to P312 for nonagriculture, and P302 for the agriculture sector, P312 for service or retail merchandise employing ten or more workers and P281 for those employing less that ten workers.

Suyao said the new cola

adjustment will adjust the pay to P317 per day for non-agricultural sector, P307 per day for the agricultural sector, service or retail industries employing ten or more workers at P317 and P286 for those employing less than ten employees.

“I urge the employers to implement the new wage adjustment that will serve as our Christmas gift to our workers,” he said. (PIA 11Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)

Tigerair Philippines add Gensan to network

Tigerair Philippines adds a new domestic destination. It will launch direct flights from Manila to General Santos starting November 28, 2014.

The airline’s General Santos service will depart from Manila at 12:30 pm every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday and arrive in General Santos at 02:20 pm.

Every Monday, the flight departs from Manila at 2:00 pm and arrive in General Santos at 3:50 pm.

Every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, the return flight will depart from General Santos at 3:00 pm and will land in Manila at 4:50 pm whereas, on Mondays it will depart General Santos at 4:30 pm and arrive in Manila at 6:20 pm and on Thursdays, it will

depart General Santos at 3:10 pm and arrive in Manila at 5:00 pm.

The new flight will utilize an Airbus A320 aircraft. The lowest year-round fare for Manila-Roxas and vice versa start at P2,008.

General Santos is dubbed as the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines.” It is also famous for its export quality products such as tropical fruits and copra. General Santos is also gateway to popular tourist destinations such as Lake Sebu, Seven Falls, and the Sarangani.

I remember one story from the Bible; the Parable of the Talents. One of Jesus’ most significant parables regarding work is set in the context of investments (Matt. 25:14-30).

A rich man delegates the management of his wealth to his servants, much as investors in today’s markets do. He gives five talents (a large unit of money) to the first servant, two talents to the second, and one talent to the third. Two of the servants earn 100 percent returns by trading with the funds, but the third servant hides the money in the ground and earns nothing. The rich man returns, rewards the two who made money, but severely punishes the servant who did nothing.

The servant who received one talent was not condemned for failing to reach the fivetalent goal; he was condemned because he did nothing with what he was given. At the same time, the parable ends with the talent taken from the third servant being given to the one with ten talents.

The implication of the parable is that, we are to use whatever talents or resources

we’ve been given to the best of our ability. We should make it thrive. We should be a good steward of what have been entrusted to us.

HELP Portrait CDO was the offshoot of a movement that Cagayan de Oro-born and Los Angeles-bred Bryan Alano started in 2010.

"It’s more than a portrait," said Bryan Alano. "It’s basically making someone feel special and a lot of us take this for granted. It’s just so easy with technology making it so easy. We just take photos anytime. These people don’t have that access."

Thirty-two-year-old Alano moved to Los Angeles from Cagayan de Oro when he was 19 and had been involved in photography for about seven years now.

He joined the social photography project Help Portrait.

Help-Portrait was founded by celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart and Kyle Chowning in 2008. Their mission is to empower photographers, hairstylists and makeup artists to use their skills, tools and expertise to give back to their local community.

Each December, photographers, hairstylists and makeup artists all around the

album so special in fact it echoes some, if not all aspects of OFWs' experiences and is slated for a release next year.

Personally, being able to work abroad is experience enough to muster inspiration for the project. And this very much is a big motivator for Nonoy. But as fate had it, circumstances can bring surprises the least you expect it.

Now, Alano takes the group’s concept of photographing the less fortunate back to his home country.

"I really wanted to take this to the Philippines, and over there, there are more people that are less privileged, and this will mean a lot of them," said Alano. "This will change their life and this will be more meaningful. It’s way beyond photography," he added. "It’s a connection. It’s making someone feel more special. That’s the most amazing feeling ever.”

It's as if it was really fated to happen. A song called Hanggang Dito was especially composed for and with only Nonoy in mind.

The composer's name? Cristina Suzette del Rosario. It was her mother, a very big fan of Nonoy that introduced her to the latter's music. It was also Nonoy's songs that inspired 'Zeth' or 'Crish' as friends and family call her to learn the piano when she was younger.

For Christina, the honor

of having her first effort included in the album of the man she considered a music hero and her mom's music idol was surreal but nonetheless a big accomplishment.

GIDEON is one of the judges in biblical Israel.

PASSIONATE. That's basically the best word to describe Nonoy Zuniga as a balladeer, doctor and advocate for health and environment. For years Nonoy managed to juggle all his passions and come out a wholly improved person every time.
