Affordable Mobility – Honda Wave 125 Alpha

A cub is a type of motorcycle that is indigenous to the ASEAN region. The word “cub” is said to be an abbreviation of the term Commuter Under Bone, as these types of bikes are primarily used for

commuting and most, if not all, are fitted with a single under-tube frame. However, some will argue that the word itself can also mean “cheap urban bike” since cubs tend to be favored by riders on a

budget because they are relatively cheap to buy.

With an SRP of P 55, 000, the Honda Wave 125 Alpha is no exception.

The Wave 125 Alpha maybe affordable but there surely is nothing “cheap” about the bike.

Firstly, it is equipped with a four stroke, aircooled 124.8 cc OHC engine which is higher in terms of displacement compared to the competition in this price range. 6.5 kw @ 7000 RPM and 10.07 Nm @

You also get cast alloy wheels instead of steel rims and a twin-piston Nissin caliper front disc brake. The 17inch rubbers provide ample stability on the road but the dual rear shocks were a bit firm when riding solo, as this type of suspension configuration is usually tuned to accommodate the extra weight of a pillion. Nonetheless, I found the ride comfortable enough on long distance commutes.

The wide, padded seat and the good ergonomics allowed a 5’11” rider like me to find a suitable posture. The bar ends also significantly lessen vibration, if not add a

bit of aesthetic appeal.

As with all Honda cubs I’ve tested, the autoclutch transmission on this one was quite easy to operate. A light nudge of your toe and it shifts smoothly into gear.

Though it will not fit a helmet of any kind, the Wave 125 Alpha’s lockable under seat compartment is big enough for other things like gadgets, rain gear or tools. What I personally liked about it is that the seat pops open when you turn the key, making it possible to open even when one hand is holding the stuff you are about to put in. DAVAO City––As calls encouraging him to run for president intensified, Davao City mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said on Friday it’s now a 50-50 chance that he may run for the country’s highest post in next year’s national elections.

He told reporters at the culmination of the “Run Duterte Run” caravan on Friday: “(Will) it be 50-50 if I am not considering to run?” he said, adding his decision “could go either way.”

Duterte had earlier said he was not at all interested in the Presidency.

On Friday, he said he still needs more time to convince his family, especially his daughter, former City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who objects to his running for President because of age.

Duterte is turning 70 in March.

Bomb threats disrupt work, court proceedings DAVAO City––The court proceedings at the Hall of Justice, including the arraignment of the three accused in the murder of Richard King were disrupted after two Regional Trial Court (RTC) branches received bomb threats from an anonymous caller Friday.

An employee of RTC Branch 9 received a call from a man telling her: “may bomba akong inilagay dyan hindi ako nagbibiro (I placed a bomb there I am not joking)” and then hanged up. The employee immediately informed her

colleague about the threat and asked for police assistance. Police authorities were able to get the mobile phone number of the anonymous caller that they are now tracking for investigation.

After 10 minutes, the stenographer of RTC Branch 10 also received a call from a man telling her: “Makinig ka may bomba ako inilagay dyan, pasabugin ko yan lahat di ako nagbibiro (You listen I placed a bomb there, I will explode it I am not joking)”.

authorities to order all employees and people inside the Justice building to get out allowing police to inspect all offices.

The incident resulted in the postponement of the scheduled arraignment of three accused in the murder case in relation to the killing of Cebu City-based

businessman Richard King.

The three accused Paul Dave Labang, Rommel dela Cerna and Rodel dela Cerna arrived but RTC Branch 16 Presiding Executive Judge Emmanuel Carpio rescheduled their arraignment.

This development will also delay the proceedings against Supt. Leonardo Felonia since the arraignment of the three accused was pursuant to the order of the Supreme Court, which granted the police officer’s petition to change the venue of hearing with regards to his case due to threats of his life in Davao City. Women over 65 more prone to hypertension than men Manila, Philippines – August 29, 2015 -In the United States, one in every threeadults has high blood pressure. While women are as likely to have this condition as men, they are more prone to acquiring it during their twilight years.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men and women both have the tendency to develop hypertension—the medical term for high blood pressure—during their lifetimes. However, women over 65 years old are more prone to acquiring it, particularly those who passed through their menopausal stage.

High blood pressure or hypertension is a common condition which triggers the heart to pump blood excessively. Having the heart pump more blood and narrower arteries, it is likely to result tohigherchances of having high blood pressure.

Today, hypertension has become one of the major contributors to the global disease burden, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, since it causes health problems such as cardiovascular disease.

Amado Nazal, medical director of PharexHealthCorp., said that women who passed through their menopausal stage are at an increased risk of having hypertension because of hormonal changes and increase in body mass index that comes with age.

DAVAO City––The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCII) will revive the Davao Investment Conference (iCon) after a twoyear hiatus since 2012, the Chamber’s president said Friday.

DCCCII president Antonio Dela Cruz told reporters that the re-staging of Davao iCon on November 4 to 6, 2015 will attract

300 to 500 participants from all over the country.

The chamber will tie up with the Subdivision and Housing Developers Association (SHDA) for the holding of this year’s threeday conference, which will highlight the booming real estate industry focusing on housing developments and infrastructure for Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

The Davao iCon was held in 2011and 2012.

He said they are highlighting the housing industry since it covers all other players engaged in the construction business.

There will also be a business matching to link the local players with the potential investors.

The DCCCII is also holding the 17th Davao Trade Expo on September

25 to 27, 2015 at the SMX Convention Center Davao.

PROGRESSIVE youth group Anakbayan slammed the Aquino administration’s P3.002 trillion proposed 2016 national budget as a pro-rich and anti-poor budget that is riddled with hidden pork, prioritizes foreign debt, and subsidizes big business at the expense of social services like education.

Ana kb ayan de c r ie d the top priority given by the Aquino government on foreign debt servicing which is P740.5 billion in the 2016 proposed budget, with P392.79 billion for interest payments and P347.7 billion for the principal amortizations.

“Aquino really is a dutiful puppet, diligently paying

for onerous foreign debts while loaning more from foreign banks to implement foreign-oriented programs.

In fact, Aquino will loan P674.8 billion next year just to fill the deficit in the proposed budget,” said Anakbayan national chair Vencer Crisostomo.

The youth organization also condemned the large

number of privatization projects under Aquino’s flagship Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) which the group says only benefits the principal cronies and big businesses closest to Aquino.

Under the proposed 2016 budget, 10 PPP projects amounting to P189 billion will be awarded to Ayala,

Sy, Cojuangco and 13 other big tycoons. Contrary to its promise that government will not spend for these projects, the allocations for PPPs will not go below P65.9 billion.

M A G S AY S AY, D av a o d el Su r-Members of the Magsaysay Organic Farmers Marketing Cooperative (Mofarmco) in this municipality are seeking for a certification from the Negros Island Certification Services (Nicert) this year.

In an inter view on Wednesday, Mofarmco manager Cristina E. Soria said representatives from Nicert will visit organic rice fields for pre-inspection on the farmers’ organic practices anytime this year.

“We want to have a preinspection first so that they (Nicert) can correct us with our existing practices that need to be improved, so that we will have better chances of passing the final inspection,” she said in Cebuano.

To ensure that Mofarmco members would have a set

of guidelines in organic farming, the cooperative has established an internal control system (ICS).

Nicert provides inspection and certification services to farmers who want to venture into organic farming. The organic-certifying body also “assures the quality of organic products, that is ecologically produced according to specific standards, and to create and develop an environmentally sustainable agricultural system.”

Mofarmco chairperson Antonio R. Serencio Jr., who has been an organic farmer since the 1990s, said one of the advantages of organic farming is that it requires a lesser production cost with the use of organic fertilizers that all cooperative members produce by themselves.

Conventional farming, meanwhile, requires expensive chemical fertilizers to prevent pest infestations and diseases. Organic farming only needs a good and proper water management system to produce quality grains and keep the pests

and diseases at bay, Soria added.

What’s good about organic farming is that farmers can benefit from price premiums, he added.

Mofarmco started organic rice production in 2004, known back then as Magsaysay Organic Farmers and Workers Association (Mofawa).

The cooperative has grown to over 20 members with a total of 26 hectares to date. He said the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 assisted them find new markets in Digos City and Davao City after suffering a dwindling number of members for lack of market in its early years.

Soria added they are in talks with Manila-based company Glocorp., which would demand from them 300 bags (each bag contains 50 kilograms) of organic rice a month.

However, she added they cannot meet the demand at their current production rate with only 1,000 bags of fresh palay per cropping season.

Rice has two cropping

seasons – the wet (from August to September) and dry (from February to March).

They already supplied the Glocorp. with 100 bags of black rice and 150 bags of red last June.

“They at least want us to supply them 300 bags of rice a month initially,” she said.

Aside from rice, the company also buys organic muscovado for export, Soria said.

To cater the growing domestic demand, she said they are hoping to expand their rice fields to increase their production volume.

“Before, our supply was just enough for the malls and walk-in buyers, but now we are running short of supply,” she said.

Serencio is hoping to increase the number of organic rice farmers in their municipality to help address global warming and advocate for health and wellness.

Members who want to shift from conventional to organic, he said, are welcome to join but they must undergo a 12-to 18-month transition period.

Maguindanao Electric Coop loses P1.6m in robbery

DATU ODIN SINSUAT, Maguindanao––An armed robber ran away with P1.6 million in cash from a van owned by the Maguindanao Electric Cooperative (Magelco) on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Senior Insp. Lendsy Sinsuat, Datu Odin police station chief, said the incident happened at past 3:30 p.m. in Sitio Katalungan, Barangay Datu Pinguiaman in this town.

Basit Beneto, the van’s security escort, told police the unidentified gunman emerged at the back of the Toyota D4D van while on the way to Magelco’s office in Barangay Awang of this town.

Beneto was traveling along with Hanah Malang, Magelco cashier, and Jerome Romuar, the driver.

The gunman pointed his .45 pistol at the passengers and ordered Malang to tie the driver and let the escort drive the vehicle.

The gunman later covered the victims’ eyes with duct tapes, grabbed the money from the cashier’s bag worth 1.6 million pesos and fled.

Local police found duct tapes and a toy hand grenade inside the van.

No one could tell in what direction the gunman fled no witness had surfaced so far.

The employees who rode the van came from various sub-offices of Magelco in Maguindanao to get collection money. The last town they visited was Datu Piang.

“They said they were unaware of the fourth person who concealed himself at the back seat of the vehicle.

How come he came inside puzzles us; that is subject of our deeper investigation” Sinsuat said.

Learning to read and write and count is critical to a child’s success in school and later in life. One of the best predictor of school success in a level of a child’s progress in these foundational skills. Although reading, writing and numeracy increase as children grow, the early childhood years comprise the most important period for language literacy and numeracy development.

The ability to read and write will be develop through the availability and accessibility of age-appropriate and culturally-sensitive materials for children are extremely important to encourage the regular practice of reading and counting.

One of the Presidents ten point Basic Education Agenda which states that “ Every child should be a reader by grade I” Thus, Department of education is strengthening its reading program through the implementation of Early Language Literacy and Numeracy Program.

Its goal is to develop in Filipino children literacy and numeracy skills and attitudes which will contribute to lifelong learning. It also aims to improve reading and numeracy skills of kinder to grade 3 pupils following

the k to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

Components of early language literacy and numeracy program are; a) establishment of baseline data, e.g. pupils, teachers and materials profile, b.)

Materials development c.)

Development of classroom based assessment protocol for literacy and numeracy skills, d) Professional development of teachers and school heads.

Priority recipient schools identified are those low performing schools nationwide in the 2014 National Achievement Test.

Thus, Professional development of teachers and school heads was roll out a month ago. Expected that all trained teacher participants strengthened its capacity to teach and to assess early reading and numeracy skills, strengthen the skills of school heads and instructional managers and supervisors and improved management and administration of the program.

Now Deped is on the Phase III of the program which is Mentoring trough School based learning Action cells ( SLACS) which facilitated by the trained teachers, school heads and supervisors.

Constitutional constraints In his 70-minute speech, he made reference to the Presidency six times and how he would run the country and what reforms he would implement.

Duterte has been going around the key areas in the country to push for a shift to a federal form of government.

He said he does not want to fail in fulfilling his duties at the end of the six-year term.

He also reiterated earlier pronouncements that he would declare a revolutionary government should there be anyone who would get in his way and file an impeachment case against him while he is implementing reforms.

He also discussed cleaning up government agencies such as the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Bureau of Customs, Government Service Insurance Company, Social Security System, and Philippine National Police of corrupt officials and workers.

Mindanao first Should his plan on having a revolutionary government take shape, he said he will prioritize Mindanao first and that he would talk to the Moro people.

He said he got a copy of the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law before it reached Congress, “at nung binasa ko sabi ko mahirap, baka hindi makalusot” (when I read it, I said, this will face difficulties, it might not pass).

He said he would also appeal to the communists to give up armed struggle to allow development to prosper. “Let’s not take arms against each other. Why kill each other?,” he said.

of P648.2 billion or at least 22 percent of the budget are in fact lump sums or pork barrel under the direct control of Malacañang.

The largest chunks of lump sums are in the form of “special purpose funds” (SPFs) which amount to P430.4 billion. The SPFs increased by as high as 75.2 percent in 2016 from only P245.7 billion in the year 2015. The remaining P217.8 billion are in other lump sums hidden in 38 government agencies.

“Kahit idineklara nang labag sa batas, patuloy pa rin ang pork na gaya ng idineklarang iligal na Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF). This time around they do it through “insertions” for Aquino allies in the budget of different agencies,” said Crisostomo.

Other lump sums cited by the youth leader include the P25.7 billion “bottom’s up budget” for non-government organizations (NGOs) and the P18.4 billion Local Government Support Fund (LSGF).

He also added that provisions that are essentially no different from the unconstitutional DAP continues to exist in the 2016 budget, thus permitting the Aquino government to transform funds into “savings” that it can use under its discretion.

Anti-youth, anti-people According to Anak-
