Briefly Dahican beach

DAVAO City– The Department of Tourism here is promoting the Dahican Beach in Mati City, Davao Oriental to be a must-visit summer destination in the country.

According to DOT regional director Art Boncato, Dahican Beach is a stunning sevenkilometer stretch of crescentshaped white sand coastline and towering coconut trees along the sparkling turquoise waters of Mayo Bay facing the Pacific Ocean. About a hectare of the bay is a declared marine sanctuary because of its rich marine life, and where dolphins, sea cows, and sea turtles inhabit the waters of Dahican.

He said the beach is also home to the famous Amihan Boys of Dahican - a group of young homegrown skimboarders and surfers.

THE city council here has approved an ordinance for the development of the Caritas Village Shelter project in Barangay Indahag, a farming village located in a higher ground southwest of here.

The ordinance, approved by the city council, authorized the city mayor to enter into a memorandum of agreement wit h var ious ag e n c ies and stakeholders for the development of the site for calamity victims here.

A PRIVATE roll-on rolloff (Ro-Ro) vessel will sail from the Philippines to neighboring Indonesia by the middle of this year, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) said on Friday.

The upcoming DavaoBitung route of the Super Shuttle Ro-Ro will be the Philippines’ f irst Ro-Ro service to a neighboring Southeast Asian country.

PCCI said the DavaoBitung Ro-Ro project was the result of the memorandum of cooperation signed by the business chambers of the cities of Davao and Manado, the capital of Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province, during the Davao Investment Forum last November.

“The private sector has taken the lead in spearheading

the implementation of the project through a bilateral a r ra ngement bet ween the business sector of the Philippines and Indonesia,” PCCI president Miguel B. Varela said in a statement. “[T]he initiative is a mi lestone in improv ing Asean connectivity and in expanding trade, tourism

Mitsubishi recalls Mirage GLS units LESS than a year after its launch, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) will recall more than 1,000 units of its subcompact Mirage GLS due to a brake system flaw, the Japanese carmaker said in a statement on Friday.

“M itsubish i Motors Philippines Corp. ...will conduc t a sa fet y reca l l of the Mitsubishi Mirage G L S m o d e l s e q u ip p e d with antilock brake system (ABS) both for manual and automat ic t ra nsmission variants,” the statement read.

“The purpose of this safety recall is to replace the front wheel speed sensors. These sensors were found to have insufficient waterproofing,” it added.

Mitsubishi explained the flaw could allow penetration by water amid rain or during car-wash, causing the ABS system “not to function

Manila entered for the first time as a point of entry after Jakarta in Indonesia, Katmandu in Nepal and Calcutta in India. Manila however was not listed as a destination of preference. Surprisingly, the travelers survey instead rank Palawan as breathtaking islands in the Philippines with 40% positive reviews out of 2,141 foreigners who responded to the survey. Boracay which was awarded recently as one of the world’s best beaches destination gathers only 17 percent followed by Bohol which was described as a combination of water, land and natures interest and rank at 13 percent. Manila and its Calabarzon suburbs were described as colorful and bustling but gathered only 4 percent of the foreign tourist reviews preceded by Banue with their rice terraces which were described as historical and picturesque at 3 percent.

The still untapped destinations in the Philippines are with high expectations that await full development. This could mean that the current destinations lack modern infrastructures when translated in the tourism equations indicates lack of good roads, bridges, airports and seaports plus reliable transportation. Travelers feedback are high in Cagayan de Oro that we have a new modern airport but with chaotic transition. We have the most modern fleet of taxis in the Philippines but we have also the worst and undisciplined drivers in this part of the country.

There are other encouraging and up- beat tourism development in the Philippines which shows in the tourism statistics of Davao City with more domestic travelers in the convention and shoppers market as their driver for growth.

Dubai’s palatable Asian dishes

here have always been rooms for Asian food in UAE’s sprawling geography, where almost all kinds of dishes are scattered in pleasant dining places in its seven Emirates.

But this one I walked into was, at its best, an Asian cuisine restaurant, where family and friends can escape from downtown rush-kind of food and taste palatable Asian food with culinary consciousness.

Wok In restaurant is truly a walk-up restaurant, where people from all walks of life can easily drop by, simply because it is within the heart of Deira, and once you have located Movenpick Hotel Deira, you’ll find Wok In easily situated at its ground floor, where you can find solace in that Asian cuisine restaurant, which opened early 2011, when I was there, and shortly after Movenpick Hotel did.

Wok In restaurant coalesced at Movenpick Hotel and it reshaped the notions of Asian food in restaurants to its best.

As soon as I was seated and opened the menu, I was hooked to one appetizer like a magnet. I must admit, I’m a vulture of Japanese food -- California Maki (Wok In’s had avocado in it instead of mango), Shrimp Tempura, Tofu, and served with Wasabe.

As soon as the order came, which was commendably fast, I grabbed a pair of chopsticks and dipped a whole California Maki into the Wasabe stirred in black sauce.

As if I wasn’t satisfied with Wasabe’s biting upshot, I put on more Wasabe; and some more until I felt ‘that’ prickletingle feeling ran up my nostril and went up my head,

Mobilizing our savings

he recent passage of a law making life insurance more affordable for Filipinos is a welcome development for those who wish to invest in their future.

By reducing taxes on insurance premiums, Republic Act 10001 will enable more Filipinos to purchase life insurance – financially preparing them and their families in the event of unforeseen circumstances such as illness and death.

This legal measure is not only seen to increase the sale of life insurance, it is also expected to play an important role in savings mobilization.

Together with the recent passage of Republic Act 2505 or the Personal Equity and Retirement Account (PERA) Act, and Republic Act 9576 or the law amending the charter of the Philippine Deposit Corporation (PDIC), Republic Act 10001 helps create an environment conducive for saving.

I wrote in a past column about how the PERA Act will allow Filipino workers to prepare for their retirement by having a special savings account invested by professional fund managers.

Republic Act 9576, on the other hand, increased the maximum deposit insurance coverage from P250,000 to P500,000 as a preemptive response to the global financial crisis. More significantly, this has helped allay the Filipino depositors’ fears of losing their hard-earned savings and encourage them to save more in the bank.

So what is savings mobilization? It is how the authorities formulate and implement policies that urge us to prioritize investment over consumption.

To do this, we save our money in banks, insurance companies, or other financial institutions.

These institutions serve as channels for spurring economic growth through their lending to companies and enterprises that in turn generate more employment and other economic activities.

By Cheng Ordoñez whew! And, there, I thought my night was fantastic and complete.

But then, the Laksa Soup was a surprise. It’s a seafood soup w it h coconut mi l k, shrimp, calamares, fish cake, egg, a taste of chicken powder with noodles and bean sprouts as main mantles. It was the best soup I ever tasted in Dubai.

Wok In’s kitchen is nestled at the center of the restaurant itself, and every diner can see the chopping, the mixing, the frying, the grilling – real cooking being done there; and, there was the mostawaited part – The Noodle Show – a cook, who has Chinese features, performed an over-the-top moulding of pasta. It looked easy on him but, definitely, the skill he has can’t be transferred to anyone as easy as you see him perform it. Restaurant guests moved up close to him for picturetaking. Like seeing a clown performing, children, who were with some guests, were delighted by his performance. They chuckled at the performing cook’s way of throwing the moulded flour left and right, stretching it and dropping it over with a loud sound at the work table. ou’ve heard of people who try to raise their standard of living at almost any cost. They’ll go without many things to get a higher education, hoping it will later get them a higher-paying job and career. Some even move their family to another country to raise their standard of living. Still others will only let their children marry someone whose standard of living is the same or higher than theirs.

Many of us spend much of our life working to raise our standard of living in terms of money and status. Then when we finally reach the standard of living we want, we still have to work hard to make sure we stay there!

Investments, the PDIC says, require financing through s av i n g s ge ne r at e d f r om domestic and foreign sources.

The PDIC notes, however, t hat foreig n sou rces a re unsustainable and increase the country’s vulnerability to international capital f light.

Thus, PDIC recommends that the expansion of domestic savings should be enhanced as a necessary condition to boost capital formation, mobilizing our savings and achieve sustained economic growth.

Savings are commonly understood as the portion of income left after deducting all expenditures and payment of liabilities for a given period. The money left is usually set aside and kept in banks to earn interest.

By investing our savings in banks, we are rewarded with “investment returns” in the form of interest. This is because our banks also invest the money we deposit in construction, housing, or business loans.

Through these loans, companies and businesses would have sufficient money to fund their activities – endeavors that would have a long-term effect on the economy.

Investing in a PERA account or in a life insurance would also bring about the same desired outcome: By investing one’s money in investment products, the life insurance company or the professional fund manager (in the case of PERA) would, in the long run, spur economic growth.

converged there for the performance. The centrality of the kitchen catches everyone’s attention and the funicular-like throwing and dumping sound by the performing cook reminded me of Chinese ritual dances.

Like the others, I enjoyed the show all throughout. It’s a good thing the main coarse, came after the show.

I picked Thai duck Curry for the main course. Grape and pineapple reduced to nil the usual ambivalent duck taste, and I know it has been pickled overnight. Shipped from Brazil, the roasted duck was tossed in coconut milk, some fennel, a taste of lime and sweet basil veiled with cherry tomatoes and mixed in red curry paste. And the Chinese fried rice mixed with prawn, carrots enlivened with mushroom spring onion perfectly suits the course.

I also got Sambal Prawn mantled with kangkong. It was the kangkong leaves that I was attracted to. Having missed home, I missed the typical green vegetable leaves we abundantly have in our country.

Sambal Prawn is not new to Filipinos. It’s a dish common to most of us and Asian countries like our neighbors, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and China.

Wok In restaurant is Dubai’s pelagic pleasure, so to speak, in terms of seafood.

Wok In is the restaurant truly meant for Asian cuisine, which is almost illusory here and the f lavors were f leeting. Airport Transition

n times of serious concern for the local economy, the importance of stability in airport services is paramount.

The sudden decision of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to close the Lumbia Airport by April 30 does not make good business sense. The Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry has already made an appeal to the CAAP for reconsideration due to passenger safety. These are some concerns related to this ill-advised decision. First, Lumbia Airport is a major employment center that provides 300 direct and indirect employment to workers resulting in severe job losses. The Lumbia airport management could have offered re-training of new skills for the airport personnel who will be made redundant this month.

Second, the new Laguindingan Airport has no air navigation systems and support facilities to guide the pilots.

The lack of navigational aids such as the Instrument Landing Systems; VHF omni-directional radio range (VOR); the Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), Meteorological Observing System; Precision Approach Lighting System and the Precision Approach Path Indicator highlights the risk of air accidents.

Third, there is a need to preserve passenger safety to maintain the thriving tourism industry. Visitors flying into the city spend more for lodging, retail, entertainment, and food when compared to visitors using other modes of travel. The number of visits staying in Cagayan de Oro for vacation, business purposes, or personal visits represents 89 percent of all persons boarding the airlines. Any airline accident in Cagayan de Oro airport will result in a 50% decline in passenger volume.

Fourth, the hiring of new airport personnel needs leadtime. The management of Laguindingan International Airport will have to hire operations personnel, maintenance

By Amparo Pamela Fabe employees, contract service employees, security officers, firefighters, contract janitorial service employees, specialized electricians, plumbers and air conditioning mechanics. The loading bridges and baggage conveyor systems require specialized service personnel.

The workers need to undergo technical and customer service training. The airport has to create a safety team that will institute full serviceability inspection and a high-speed taxiway and runway inspections.

Fourth, the Airport Administration needs to give time for the airlines, car rental agencies, food and beverage facilities, gift shops, and tenants to set up their services.

The airport officials need to facilitate airport transfers system through private and public vehicles from the city to the new airport.

A well-planned transition for aviation services in Cagayan de Oro would ensure the essential safety and security factors that would contribute to the confidence level of business and leisure travellers alike. Passenger safety is over and above business expediency and presidential prerogative.

The expected technical and personnel glitches in the airport operations in Laguindingan Airport will result in negative financial impacts such as delayed arrivals of tourists and business travellers and the phenomenon of inconvenience and tedium as airport personnel attempt to master their respective responsibilities. Local hog, poultry industry players seek incentives from government too

LOCAL hog and poultry raisers here and nearby provinces have urged the Bureau of Industry (BOI) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) to apprise them of the incentives available to them in the light of the recent issue that Thai firm Charoen Pokphand was able to get a grant of a seven-year tax holiday as well as other perks.

In a recent public hearing conducted at the House of Representatives on the reported grant of incentives to the Charoen Pokphand Inc., BOI Executive Director Lucita Reyes confirmed that t he Cha roen Pok pha nd Foods Philippines Corp., (CPFPC) does not ow n the parcels of lands in the provinces of Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Bataan where the CPFPC project sites are located.

The use of the properties is covered by lease agreements, said Reyes, who made the confirmation based on the cer t if ications issued by various provincial assessors.

In August 2012, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) found out they were actually mining for gold and other minerals after confiscating a magnetic separator for iron recovery and a sluice box for gold recovery during an inspection in the riverside parts of barangays San Simon and Canitoan.

The MGB-10 f iled the complaints against SOMC and PLSMC in November 2012.

“We will rely on the wisdom of our prosecutor,” MGB-10 OIC Director Rex Monsanto said.

XU director leads UNESCO-ITI World Theatre Day at SM City

estful and enchanting presentations brought everyone’s attention in accord as the performers took center stage with their engaging moves at Atrium, SM City Mall, Cagayan de Oro, March 27.

Mindanaoan artistic director, Hobart P. Savior stuns the audience with his dedication in making everything fall into place as he oversees the whole event meticulously with wit and passion.

Mr. Savior is a director at Xavier University- Ateneo de Cagayan not only for theater and film but also in other media art production. He teaches in the English department of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), where he also completed his Master of English Language Studies as a cum laude.

Through Savior’s resilience, skills

and talents in directing, managing and acting in the theater company, on 1995 he joined the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) for chorus roles in the first enactment of Datu Matu, and became the lead role for the musicale presented to celebrate the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Outreach's silver year.

In addition, Savior’s performed for the Singapore Initiation International Festival and acted in the independent film “All Things New”. In 2006 he accepted the position as the IPAG associate artistic director after years of involvement in the community and school theatre as an actor, director and animator.
