Hog farmers expect for better market HOG raisers in North Cotabato see a better swine industry with the government offer to help them improve business. During the first ever Hog Raisers’ Forum here on Friday, Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said the Duterte administration is focusing on the country’s agriculture players to ensure that there is enough food for Filipino families. About 400 small and medium hog farmers attended the forum organized by North Cotabato First District board member Socrates Piñol and the local government of Libungan. Ferdinand Piñol, the secretary’s executive assistant, told the hog raisers and other farmers to air out their concerns because the agriculture department is listening. “We were sent here by Secretary Manny to simply show to you that we are serious in helping you in your farming ventures. Thus, tell us what you need so that we may know what projects we are going to give you,” the younger Piñol said. Socrates initiated the See farmers, page B3

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon M. Lopez (left) meets with French Ambassador to the Philippines Thierry Mathou (right) on July 28, 2016 to discuss future plans and programs in strengthening the two countries’ economic ties. France, as the third largest economy in the European Union, is among the countries which support the Philippines’ advocacy on developing small and medium enterprises (SMEs), especially in the creative services and startup sector. Both countries look forward for the next Philippines-France Joint Economic Commission that will be held in the Philippines in 2017. Philippine exports to France increased by 25.41% from USD 331.64 million in 2014 to USD 415.89 million in 2015. LABOR and Employment Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III said the Department will assess 5,150 registered contractors and subcontractors in 2016 as part of its strategy to end illegitimate forms of contracting/ subcontracting and other short-term employment arrangements. “As initial target and based on administrative data of the Bureau of Working Conditions (BWC), DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment) will assess 5,150 registered contractors and subcontractors of 26,194 principals,” said Bello, adding that the figure was part of the agreement during the Consultation Workshop on Ending “Endo” held on July 18-19, 2016.
