DRUG PUSHERS? Do these young people look like drug push-
ers to you? A netizen asked as he posted this photo of 22-year-old Rowena Tiamson, and 20-year-old Roman Clifford Manaois on his Facebook account. Armed group gunned down Tiamson and Manaois on suspicion that they were into the illegal drugs trade. Rowena is a consistent mass communications scholar and is due to graduate this October. She is known by her friends and relatives as a kind and gentle person. Roman or “Oman,” as he is fondly known, is about to graduate as a seaman, a former sacristan and is said to be a nice kid. A PRELATE has raised the alarm over the spate of alleged drug-related personalities’ killings. “We must remember always that aevery human life counts. Every human being is a child of God. In fighting crime and in maintaining peace and order we must not forget respect for life,” said Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos, head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (CBCP-ECMI). With the rising death count of suspected drug traffickers, the prelate reminded the authorities not to see people as mere numbers but as human beings who have rights to due process of law. The prelate said authorities must go beyond seeing suspected criminals as mere numbers. See BISHOP, page A7

The PEPP, the largest alliance of church federations in the country, said that both sides must “not allow mistrust to deter or defeat this new beginning that is providing so much hope to our nation and people.” While commending the president
for taking the “bold step in declaring a unilateral ceasefire” during his State of the Nation Address (Sona) on July 25, the PEPP also urges the communist group to “reciprocate the gesture.” “The PEPP strongly encourages the NDFP to reciprocate the gesture toward peace by also declaring See PEACE, page A7
