TURN OVER CEREMONY OF BONIFACIO NHS - SHS BUILDING

The Senior High School (SHS) building of BonifacioNHS was successfully done last July 5, 2016 at 2: o’clock in the afternoon.

The program was graced with important personalities headed by the 2nd district representative, Hon. Henry S. Oaminal Schools Division Superintendent, Jonathan S. Dela Peña , Ph.D.,CESO VI ; SGOD Chief, Mr. Felcor T. Blanco; Mayor of Bonifacio, Hon. Samson R. Dumanjug and his Sangguniang Bayan members; District Supervisor , Erlinda N. Magallanes ,Ed.D. Barangay Captain of Liloan, Hon. Peregrino N. Delos Reyes and his Barangay Councils; Most Rev. Fr. Villamor, different nearby secondary princi-

pals, PALS, DSWD, teachers, students, parents and stakeholders.

The event was started with the cutting of ribbon and follows the blessings of the building with Rev. Fr. Villamor the parish priest of Bonifacio. The guests were roaming around the building from first to second floor. After this, the program follows. It was welcomed by the school principal, Mrs. Nimfa P. Lagoy and she stresses out that the school still needs of teachers because there are still subjects who do not have teachers to handle. Another she asks is to have a covered court because for 25 years, the school didn’t have anyone and every time we have a program, it rains and the area gets easily full of water

and it’s really hard to drain.

After her talks, the schools division superintendent follows his message.He made mentioned that the school is one of the best school in Misamis Occidental division. He always witnesses every time the school has a recital. He gives the best descriptions of the school to our 2nd district representative, Hon. Henry S. Oaminal.

It was cool and the heavy rains pours as he gives his

inspiring message where he was happy to inform the public that the building is ready for occupancy for the SHS students of Bonifacio NHS. He was proud and inspired by the talks of the superintendent where he approved not just a simple covered court where the principal is asking but a “MINI CULTURAL CENTER” which shall be used this coming March 2017.

He was convinced to give this P2.5 M project with

the outstanding recommendations by our schools division superintendent, Sir Jonathan S. Dela Peña.

The latter emphasizes how the school participated in SPA curriculum where the show gives an authentic and world class performance. According to Hon. Oaminal, “I can’t say no to the request of your pr incipa l MaamL agoy, with the superintendent’s recommendations and of course the weather really

convinced me to give and approved the mini cultural center! There will be dressing room and conference hall.” The expectants applauded so much and very happy to hear this good news. The congressman ordered the provincial Engineer to submit the plan of this project in two months.

The program ended with a big smile on every faces who attended the event.

Cultural Education: Its Impact in Teaching English for 21st Century Learners

THE Philippines is an archipelago and as such, there are many languages.

But despite the language barrier, cultures of people here are relatively similar with each other. Cultures of people in the Philippines can only be divided

into three – the animists, the Muslims and the Christians. The animists were the original inhabitants of the land followed by the Muslim foreigners and the Spaniards and Americans, who were Christians. There was a five-year period when the Philippines was dominated by the Japanese but they failed to introduce their

culture here.

With English as the main medium of instruction and given the fact that the country is part of globalization in the 21st century, it is not that challenging to teach cultural education from kindergarten to 11th grade.

What we as teachers must strive is to teach correct history to our

students with no bias.

Beyond history, we must also include the teaching of pop culture in our students. That’s because after World War II, our residents appreciate Western culture. We grow up loving Matt Monroe and Marilyn Monroe and today, we can access any kind of music using modern technology.

Christopher Ryan Tan, OSHDP chairman, also blamed the government “red tape” as the culprit in the delay of construction of adequate shelters in disasterhit communities.

The OSHDP cited the 5,000 victims of typhoon Sendong in Cagayan de Oro City in 2011 who remained without adequate shelter for failure to develop the 14 intended relocation sites here.

“It would take two years for a realty developer to secure a total of 68 permits in one housing site alone,” Tan said.

He said that the bureaucracy should streamline the process of securing housing permits in order to get rid of “red tape” in order to expedite the development of housing sites.

The OSHDP also discussed the prospects of the Philippine economy, realty outlook, environmental innovations in housing and other initiatives in the construction technology during the first day of the convention here.

One of the most interesting topics will focus on housing innovations such as “green” building and other initiatives, innovations in construction technology and innovative marketing approach.

Formed in 1995, the OSHDP seeks to promote the interest and welfare of socialized and low-cost housing developers, through the coordination with all sectors and stakeholders with the end in view of attaining viability in the housing industry and focusing efforts to provide shelter to the lower income segment of the population, the statement said. The KSAs aside from HUDCC and NHA are Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB), Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG), Social Housing Finance Corp.

In February this year, OSHDP held the Business Meeting and Industry Forum wherein the organization’s members were informed about the GB Code and encouraged

them to come up with frameworks incorporating this for their projects.

One of the frameworks is the edible landscaping wherein vegetables or crops are being tended and grown in one’s yard besides ornamental plants.

“Land is finite and very precious,” Tan stated. “We have to maximize the use

of each land.”

Besides advocating for green building, OSHDP also aims to strengthen access to land and provide housing for urban low income earners through vertical development.

For 21 years, OSHDP dedicates its endeavors for sustainable socialized housing and pairs with

government sectors to achieve its agenda.

The National Developers’ Convention in CDO is a two-day event on August 24 and 25 at N Hotel where OSHDP’s members gather and are introduced to some of the organization’s projects. This year’s theme is, “Innovating the business of affordable housing.”
