he Misamis Oriental FilipinoChinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (MOFCCCII) was founded on August 26, 1986 by the “Young Turks” of the FilipinoChinese community in Cagayan de Oro at the time, including Steve Gaisano, Albino Limketkai, See Hong, Frank Rolida, Ang Chi Sin, Jose Un, Jimmy Ting, and Johnny Lim, Khu Eng, Annie Sia, Efren Uy. Robert Ching, Lucio Tan, Greg Marten Lao. Gaisano was elected charter president with no less than the late President Corazon C. Aquino, herself of Chinese ancestry, as their inducting officer. Thirty years later, the members of what has now become Northern Mindanao’s biggest Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce can look back with pride at the transformation of their organization from a social club to a multifaceted chamber that
is moving towards the professionalization of its services to its members and the community. Initially, MOFCCCII strove to foster fellowship among its members who were members of the business community in Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro with social and cultural events such as the Annual Christmas and Valentine Parties, Mid-Autumn Mooncake Festival and promoting home grown talents performing Chinese theatre drama, singing and dancing.

The Magnificence of Mother Nature 2016 T
he Misamis Oriental Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (MOFCCCII) celebrates its 30th anniversary with a dance contest featuring the city’s leading college and university dance troupes. It will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2016, 1:00pm at Limketkai Atrium, Cagayan de Oro City. Admission is free and seating is first-come, first served.
The theme of the competition is “MOFCCCII@30 Celebrates Mother Nature”. Participating groups are required to incorporate the theme in their dance performances. The dance should also depict the
culture or history of Cagayan de Oro City.
Dance troupes from the following colleges and universities have confirmed their participation in the dance extravaganza: Capitol University (CU), Liceo de Cagayan University, Mindanao University of Science & Technology (MUST), Phinma COC, and Pilgrim Christian College (PCC). “The competition is organized to promote environmental awareness and to establish a fellowship amongst Filipino – Chinese community and the people of Cagayan de Oro,” said Greg Marten Lao, MOFCCCII Immediate Magnificence/PAGE B7

Another major accomplishment of MOFCCCII was the turnover last 19 September 2015, to the Mother Theresa Foundation Inc. (MFTI)
Child Development Center & Home for Street Children the refurbished dining hall, kitchen and comfort rooms on the occasion of MFTI’s
20th anniversary. This PhP 0.6-million rehab is the first major project marking the 30th anniversary of MOFCCCII.
“This project signals the beginning of more projects to highlight the 30th year of existence of MOFCCCII,” said Mrs. Adelfa Sia, incoming MOFCCCII president,
who spoke in behalf of the chamber during the turnover. The Mother Theresa Foundation’s biggest philanthropy is the
orphanage that is home to more or less 60 street children. It is open to street children aged 7 to 17 years old who have been living and/or working in the streets.
MOFCCCII key to first ever CDO Chinese New Year Festival The Misamis Oriental Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (MOFCCCII) was instrumental in Cagayan de Oro City first ever citywide celebration of the Chinese New Year, also known globally as the Spring Festival. Mayor Oscar S. Moreno signed Executive Order No. 009-16, series of 2016, dated 19 January 2016 creating the City Committee to undertake various activities for the Cagayan de Oro Chinese New Year Festival. The E.O. cites Section 16 of Republic Act 7160 (Local Government Code of 1991) which provides that every local government unit shall within their respective
territorial jurisdictions, ensure and support, the preservation and enrichment of culture, and furthermore, considers partnerships with different sectors of the community as a vital part of local governance. President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III previously issued Proclamation No. 831 on July 17, 2014 declaring the annual Chinese New Year as a special, non-working holiday. It is estimated that one out of every five Filipinos today are of Chinese descent. The E.O. also recognized the vital contribution of the Filipino-Chinese community to the dramatic growth and development of Cagayan de Oro City, Northern
Mindanao region and the country. Eileen E. San Juan, chairperson of the City Investment and Trade Center and the Cagayan de Oro Tourism Council Events Committee, was appointed head of the festival committee with Greg Marten Lao, president of the Bell Church Cagayan de Oro Chapter and Misamis Oriental Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (MOFCCCII), as co- chair. Although Chinese New Year celebration traditionally starts 15 days before the Lunar New Year (Monday, 8 February for 2016) and ends 15 days later, the CTC elected to start off with a
modest program starting this Saturday, 30 January 2016 up to the Chinese New Year on 08 February. The highlights of the week-long celebration was a launching program held Saturday, 30 January 2016, at the Kiosko Kagawasan of historic Plaza Divisoria featuring Dragon and Lion Dances by dancers from Kong Hua and Oro Grace Christian School, and crowd favorite Wushu weapons exhibition by members of the Phil. Wushu FederationCagayan de Oro Chapter. The opening of a Cagayan de Oro Filipino-Chinese Heritage Photo Exhibit immediately followed at the Tourism Assistance Center just across the
Kiosko Kagawasan featuring photographs of the pioneering Chinese families of the city, their establishments and their key contributions to the safety, security and growth of the city. Other key events included a week-long Chinese Movie Festival at the City Hall Plaza featuring classic Chinese movies with subtitles courtesy of the Chinese General Consulate in Cebu, Chinese Food Fair at the City Hall with Chinese Food fairs and exhibits hosted by major malls in the city like Centrio, Limketkai Center, and SM City Cagayan de Oro. The city’s two FilipinoChinese schools Kong Hua School and Oro
Grace Christian School also presented cultural performances at all major malls starting Friday, 05 January 2016. A billboard detailing all major events was posted near the Tourism Assistance Center in Plaza Divisoria. Also opened to the public was the special new year offering and lighting of the first incense stick at the Bell Church Cagayan de Oro in Macasandig on New Year’s Eve culminating with the traditional Chinese New Year’s fireworks to welcome the Year of the Fire Monkey. This was followed the next day by the distribution of lucky tikoy to residents who came to Bell Church. GONG XI FA CAI!

But perhaps the biggest contribution so far to the social welfare of the city was the Sendong relief efforts initiated by MOFCCII in coordination with the Overseas Chinese Alumni Association of the Philippines, Filipino Chinese Amity Club, Inc., Philippines Sin Lian Association, Inc., and World News Publication Corp.
when it undertook relief efforts for the hard-hit barangays of the city following the devastating floods of Tropical Storm Sendong which killed over a thousand and rendered thousands more homeless during the night of December 16-17, 2011.

It has played an increasing role not only in business but also culture and the arts, medical missions, education, and humanitarian aid in times of calamities and disasters. “Our small businessmen are having a hard time coping with the annual rise in local taxes given the constantly rising cost of doing business,” Mrs. Sia explained. “This is compounded by the traffic problem, mostly affecting our members in the Cogon Market area especially in the loading and unloading of their merchandise. The lack of traffic aides and policemen also often lead to chaos in our streets that is not conducive to

business.” An upcoming major project of MOFCCCII is a medicaldental mission tentatively scheduled for Feb 10-12, 2017 in coordination with the Mabuhay Foundation International of Sacramento City, USA. The mission will include 91 medical personnel who will conduct free medical-dental clinics on Feb. 10 at the Bell Church in Bgy. Macasandig to serve indigent residents around the area, and on Feb. 12 at Kong Hua School to service indigent residents of Barangays Kauswagan, Bonbon and Bayabas. “They will not conduct operations but focus on check-ups and giving free medicines to those who need them,” Mrs. Sia said. “They will also give away free prescription glasses to children from Grades 3-6.”

Maria Leonita Q. Go. The participants are expected to create a dance with a story line about promoting and loving Mother Earth. This story line supports environmental awareness, helps safeguard mother earth, and promotes peace and harmony in this time of impending crisis. The Champion of the competition will receive a cash Prize of 50,000Php and trophy; First Runner – up: Cash Prize of 30, 000 Php and
trophy; Second Runner –up: Cash Prize of 20,000 Php and trophy and the nonwinners get a Consolation Prize of 10,000 Php each and certificate. Each group shall be composed of a minimum of 15 to a maximum of 25 dancers or performers including instrumentalists. Music maybe live or cd-recorded. If live, Instruments used must be traditional. Members of the group may be composed of all males or females, or any combination thereof. All contenders are required to submit a one-minute video of their preparation as part of the production introductory requirement. Each dance must be completed within the stipulated time of 6 minutes (minimum) to 10 minutes (maximum). Time will begin with the first movement,
voice, or note of music, whichever comes first. The panel of judges will evaluate from 1 to 100 points each performance based on the following criteria: a. Choreography (dance arrangements, concept) 20 points; b. Theme and Music (musicality, beat technique/ rhythm, timing, moves related to the theme and music, costumes) 30 points; c. Originality (incorporating unique and original/creative moves) 20 points; d. Performance (crowd appeal, staging, spacing formations and level, synchronization, execution showmanship, and message of the presentation)30 points The scoring also incorporates On Line / Text Voting as 10% of the total score: Each mobile number is entitled for ONE (1) vote only.
