PCL backs Pres. Duterte’s war vs corruption, crime By Alexander Lopez
DAVAO CIT Y -- The 16,500-strong members of Philippine Councilors’ League (PCL) from 1,400 towns and cities in the country have signified support to the continuing campaign of the Duterte administration against corruption, crime and violence. Davao City Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang told reporters here on Monday during the Kapehan sa Dabaw that the PCL approved a resolution last week supporting the priorities and advocacies of President Rodrigo Duterte. Dayanghirang, who is the newly-elected PCL chairman of the board, said the league also passed a resolution supporting federalism, a form of government that the President has been advocating for years. “PCL’s support is vital in order to gain achievements in the programs and projects of the present administration,” Dayanghirang said. PCL, he added, is “a big group that can influence political decisions of the national leadership and at the same time, can do changes through legislations.” He said the “PCL can also advocate and gather support to major programs and projects of the government.” “PCL will rally behind President Duterte, his administration and its priority programs and projects,” Dayanghirang reiterated. The newly-elected officers of PCL took their oath of office before Duterte on April 1 in Pasig City. See backs, page A2

Envi Groups push for Mt. Apo’s continued closure DAVAO CITY April 3 (PIA)Environmental groups are pushing for the continued closure of Mt. Apo to allow the total rehabilitation of the mountain. A huge fire broke out in March last year, which devastated hundreds of hectares near its peak. The fire reportedly caused by an unattended forest fire
caused the closure of the mountain. However the Protected Areas Management Board (PAMB) citing the clamor of indigenous community in the area has reopened the mountain to climbers with a P2,000 trekking fee for climbers. Mylai Santos executive director of Ecoteneo (an
environmental group based in Ateneo de Davao) said the closure must be sustained to allow the mountain to recover from the fire. Santos who went to the fire shortly after the fire said a huge part of the mountain was totally scorched. The participants to the third volunteer climb reported that burnt area is starting
to regreen. She said that climbing must not be for tourism purposes but for replanting and adoption of burnt areas. Santos said that the indigenous community must be part of the rehabilitation efforts like supplying the seedlings and maintaining the replanted areas where they are paid for their ef-
forts. Santos said that the rehabilitation of Mt. Apo needs three to five years. Various environmental groups and concerned citizens slammed the reopening of the country’s tallest mountain stating the Mt. Apo’s recovery is the foremost priority. (PIA/ RG Alama)
