Reds attack known tourist spot in Davao Oriental EDITOR: Cris diaz

DAVAO CITY – Communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels staged an attack at Aliwagwag Falls, one of the main tourist destinations in the province of Davao Oriental, at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, an official said.

“No tourist was injured in the attack,” Captain Rhyan Batchar, chief information officer of the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division, said in a

phone interview.

Aliwagwag Falls is located in Cateel town.

Batchar said a team of 67th Infantry Battalion was assigned to the tourist spot to secure visitors, as the place is frequented by tourists during summer.

He said that around 40 members the NPA’s Southern Mindanao Regional Command staged the harassment.

Magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit SurSur, no one’s hurt DAVAO CITY – No one was hurt in the Magnitude 5.1 earthquake that struck Tandag City in Surigao del Sur at around 9:19 a.m.

Davao firm banks on research to produce better chocolates DAVAO C I T Y— Int e rnational awards for its chocolate products are not stopping a local manufacturer here in pursuing research to produce the best chocolates.

Rex Puentespina of Malagos Chocolate said they continuously conduct research to produce the best “tree to bar” chocolates.

The Malagos Chocolate is a 2-Star Winner (3-star highest) at the 2016 Great Taste competition, the “Oscars” of the food world, held in London in August.

In April 2016, it won Silver Award for Best Unflavoured Drinking Chocolate at the 2016 Academy of Choco-

late Awards in London.

And in 2015, it won its first award – Bronze for the same category at the 2015 Academy of Chocolate Awards in London.

Puentespina said they pay attention to the appearance, aroma and moisture content of their product.

“We also need to be very careful in the preparation of the cacao beans thru the fermentation process,” he said Saturday.

Puentespina said they will continue to join competitions.

In producing the Malagos chocolate, he said they only use coco sugar.

Malagos chocolates has

already penetrated international markets, including Keton, a diet specialty store in Japan that orders a thousand kilos of chocolates monthly.

Puentespina said they also ship to high-end restaurants in Singapore and Thailand for use by pastry chefs.

“Our Thailand exposure had gained interest among diners as young chefs explained its (chocolates) distinct taste, the fruity flavor and the source of the cocoa,” he said.

He said they are proud to market their chocolates as made in Davao City.

Groups gear up to help kids with disabilities in Mindanao DAVAO CITY – Real estate developer DMCI Homes and the Junior Chamber International are gearing up for an annual fun run in support of CURE Philippines, also known as Tebow CURE Hospital, which offers pediatric orthopedic surgical care for children.

The fun run will benefit children with treatable conditions such as clubfeet, clubhands, cleft lip, postburn scar releases and palate and spinal deformities.

The event, dubbed as “Putting the FUN back on the Run” is slated on May 28, where more than 1,000 runners are expected to join to help raise funds for Tebow CURE Hospital to finance the medical surgeries of children with disabilities.

“The race will be held inside the three-hectare Verdon

Parc of DMCI located along Ecoland Drive,” Joie John Baquero, project sales manager of Verdon Parc, told reporters here on Saturday.

Baquero said the support to Tebow CURE Hospital is part of DMCI’s “Kaakbay ng Pamayanan Program,” a corporate social responsibility that provides services to communities.

“We are supporting this activity to help CURE achieve its mission,” said Alvin Ang, vice president for community development of JCI-Davao.

Ang urged interested individuals to join the upcoming race as thousands of children with disabilities in Mindanao, especially those who belong to poor families who urgently need medical interventions such as surgery, will benefit from See gear, page B7

200 mangroves planted in ComVal’s protected seascape DAVAO CITY -- Some 200 mangroves were planted inside the protected seascape of Compostela Valley province in line with the celebration of Earth Day, the provincial information office said Monday.

The mangroves were planted in Mabini and Casinlac Mangrove site in Barangay Pindasan, Mabini town, it said in a statement.

Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy and Representative Maricar Zamora of Compostela Valley 1st District led the mangrove planting.

Tourists troop to Davao Oriental to enjoy ‘Summer’ sports events MATI CITY, Davao Orienta – Thousands of local and foreign tourists trooped to Dahican in Mati, Davao Oriental for the two-day simultaneous holding of Summer Fun and Summer Frolic, which end today, April 23.

Mayor Carlo Rabat said they are expecting 7,000 tourists also to the “Amihan sa Dahican” and beach volleyball event.

The Summer Fun sporting event, “Amihan sa Dahican” and Summer Frolic are held at the Menzi Beach Park and Campsite. The Summer Frolic is an initiative of the tourism sector.

These events are aimed to boost the tourism industry of the city, Rabat said. ”We are happy we are known now for the summer events,” Rabat told reporters in an interview on Saturday.

Rabat underscored the benefits it could bring to Mati especially for vendors, hotels, restaurants and the transport sector. The mayor sees a daily spending of at least PHP2,000 each visitor.

Last year, Rabat said both events drew about 10,000 visitors.

“Every year visitors are increasing even if there was

no all-out campaign from the government,” Rabat said.

He pointed to the word of mouth and postings of photos on social media using the hashtag “I love Mati” that encouraged people to visit Mati.

The mayor said the white sand beaches are not the only attraction that visitors can see but they can also visit the heritage site of Mt. Hamiguitan and experience the rich marine life such as sightseeing for dugongs (sea cows) and butandings (whale sharks) at the Pujada Bay. Earlier, Mati City Administrator Dashiel Indelible said the activities were designed to guarantee fun this summer and show the city’s strong commitment to the protection of the environment and its implementation of the solid waste management program.

The city government has been encouraging locals, visitors and event organizers to adhere to measures and restrictions to protect and conserve the environment.

Along with the tourism activities is a clean-up drive participated by locals, event organizers and the local government. (PNA)

Before this Court verified joint petition for the approval and registration of the Divorce filed by the petitioners and alleging among others.

That petitioners are husband and wife respectively in a marriage performed under Civil rites on October 7, 1984 at Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, both petitioners had been converted to Muslim and thereby embraced Islam Religion as their new found faith, by virtue of their respective intellectual choices which which were duly registered with this court, both of them can be served with summons and other legal processes relative to this case at their residents at Block 6, Lot 6, Mountain View Homes, Balulang, Cagayan de Oro City and Zone 1m 542 Palao, Iligan City respectively;

That said marriage did not last long due to lack of love and affection until the relationship manifested incompatibility and sustained misunderstanding between petitioners and reached the point of irreconcilability and they separated from each other for more than nine (9) years,they decided to separate live physically in bed and board thereby, executed Memorandum of Agreement in order to formalize their separation. Since their separation, they had never been communicating or supporting either financially or emotionally to each other,neither minding each other affair’s; Petitioner’s seek judicial decree of divorce, thereby, severing their marriage bond on October 7, 1984, so that they will have free hand to do what a single man or woman could do without marital burdens. Reconciliation between them had already been diligently employed but all proved futile.

WHEREFORE, finding this petition to be sufficient in form and substance, set the initial hearing of this case on May 19, 2017 at 9:00 a.m at which time, date and place. Any interested party may appear and show why the petition should not be granted. RESOLUTION NO. 17-266 WHEREAS, this body on June 7, 2005, adopted City Ordinance No. 05- 4773, entitled; ‘ An Ordinance Amending Certain Provisions Of City Ordinance No. 02-4256 Otherwise Known As The “New Traffic Code Of Iligan City”, And City Ordinance No. 04-4523 Entitled, “An Ordinance Amending Certain Provisions Of City Ordinance No. 02-4256 Otherwise Known As The “New Traffic Code Of Iligan City”, And City Ordinance No. 03-4352 Entitled, “An Ordinance Amending Certain Provisions Of City Ordinance No. 02-4256 Otherwise Known As The “New Traffic Code” Of Iligan City, And For Other Purposes”,.

WHEREAS, Section 8 of the said Ordinance states: “Section 8. Dispatching - No person or persons shall be allowed to dispatch for any provincial public utility vehicle at the INT-South Iligan EXCEPT; those who are already dispatching at the IBJT-North Iligan whose dispatching involves motor vehicles plying the southern provincial routes and who are already federated or otherwise bonafide members of the Iligan Federated Labor and Dispatchers Association (IFLDA) The IBJT Management Board shall adopt the implementing rules and regulations governing the conduct of the federation of dispatchers. Such rules and regulations shall include the identification of each group, the respective group of vehicles they are dispatching, uniforms for each group and identification cards which at all times be worn by the members doing dispatching and must be placed at their vest. “ WHEREAS, curing the March 30. 2017 meeting of the IBJT Executive Management Board. attended by the City Administrator. EEDMO Manager and other stakeholders of the bus terminals. Mr. Pio N. Bacong, Head of the Task Force Illegal Terminal raised the various grave violations committed by the Iligan Federated Labor and Dispatchers Association (IFLDA), (as lifted from the Minutes of Meeting), namely; 1. IFLDA is operating without a Business Permit and has only secured 2011 and 2016 for their Business Permit; 2. Failed to abide the terminal rules and regulations; failed to coordinate with the management; members not wearing uniforms, a violation of the no-smoking ordinance and failed to submit the list of dispatchers and laborers. Moreover, it only imposed the wearing of IDs last January 27, 2017; 3. Charged P1,500 from each dispatchers/ labor for the uniform but did not cooperate with the IBJT Management; 4. No one complied drug test; only ten (10) submitted the COMELEC Certificate; 5. Alleged used as political machinery WHEREAS, Mr. Bacong added that IFLDA has collected an excessive fee of P250 per trip for the IliganKapatagan PUJs and yet paid only a measly P20.00 Terminal Fee. For him the members of said organization are apparently enriching themselves at the expense of the drivers and operators using the bus terminal owned by the City Government; WHEREAS, in putting an end to this malpractice, Mr. Bacong recommended to revoke the business permit of IFLDA if there is any and/or amend the City Ordinance allowing them to operate, for that purpose; WHEREAS, paying attention to the recommendation of Mr. Bacong the Sangguniang Panlungsod cannot in anyway tolerate any organization to operate with impunity inside the bus terminal without toeing the line of the terminal authorities, especially if said organization has its own set of rules that hinders the effective and smooth operation of the bus terminal; WHEREAS, IFLDA should have been grateful to the City Government which allowed them in the first place to operate in the IBJT-South Iligan and should not abuse such grant; WHEREAS, since IFLDA’s operation is by virtue of an Ordinance, it can be suspended anytime through an amended Ordinance; WHEREFORE, on motion of Member Eric M. Capitan, duly seconded Member Bernard Y. Pacaña; Be it ordained by the Sangguniang Panlungsod in its session assembled, that: BE IT RESOLVE, AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Iligan City that the following City Ordinance be. as it is hereby ADOPTED and APPROVED.

The Marriage Contract, which was registered on December 23, 1977 with the Office of the Civil Registrar of Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, allegedly contained erroneous entries namely: 1.) The name of petitioner’s husband, which was entered as Alex Macalisang Lee instead of Alex Macalisang; 2.) Petitioner’s Father’s last name, which was entered as Pardones instead of Padrones and 3.) Petitioner’s mother’s last name, which was entered as Pardones instead of Padrones. Petitioner is seeking to correct the above erroneous entries.

Repealing Clause - All previous ordinances, executive orders, rules and regulations or parts thereof which are inconsistent with this ordinance are hereby repealed and modified accordingly.

SECTION 3. Separability Clause - If, for any reason or reasons, any part or provision of this ordinance shall be held unconstitutional or invalid, other parts or provisions here of which are not affected thereby shall continue to be in full force and in effect.

SECTION 4. Effectivity - This Ordinance shall take effect ten (10) days after the publication of a local newspaper, as set forth by law.

Smart partners with IP community, private groups to create localized educational app Smart Communications is joining forces with an indigenous community in Davao City, as well as with private and nongovernment organizations, to develop an educational mobile application that is aligned with the IP group’s culture.

Smart signed a memorandum of agreement with the IP Education Council of Sitio Contract in the Marilog district of Davao City, Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples Education, ACLC Davao, and Skeptron Business Solutions to create a localized app that teaches basic literacy to the children of the Matigsalug tribe in Davao City.

The multilingual app will use the tribe’s songs, dances, and stories to teach literacy skills to members of the tribe, and to serve as a resource for those interested in the tribe’s culture.

6. The erroneous entry, as regards his birth date, was discovered only after having secured an authenticated copy of his Certificate of Live Birth from Philippine Statistics Authority;

7. Presently, petitioner is employed as Construction and Maintenance Capataz athe Provincial Engineer’s Office, Province of Lanao del Sur;

8. In support to this petition, the following documents are attached and made an integral part hereof to prove the following entry, viz.:

a. Service Record issued by the Province at Lanao del Sur, marked ANNEX “B”;

b. Identification Card issued by the Province of Lanao del Sur, marked ANNEX “C”;

c. GSIS UMID ID Card, marked, ANNEX “D”;

9. The correction of the erroneous entry in the Certificate of Live Birth issued by the PSA and Local Civil Registrar of Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, is in order. Petitioner has not deliberately caused the recording of the above-cited erroneous entry; and

Dozens of moms shift to cloth diapers TO show unity by cloth and strengthen the campaign for Earth Day, 99 mothers and families joined the Great Cloth Diaper Change hosted by the Modern Nanays of Mindanao on April 22 at Centrio Ayala Mall, here.

At exactly 11AM, participants worldwide simultaneously changed the nappies of their babies to cloth diapers signifying their support to save the earth from accumulating too much garbage from disposables.

T h i s y e a r ’s t h e m e , “C hange St ar ts Here,” stresses the change that occurs when a local business gains one new customer particularly the local sellers of cloth diapers and other related products, when a parent makes one new friend with a common interest on using earth-friendly products, and when the community sees a united by cloth families working create a cultural shift towards cloth diapering and all its benefits.

“Kung naa’y harm ang isa ka formula milk, naa pu’y harm ang isa kabuok disposable diaper (If one formula milk causes harm, one disposable diaper also has a harmful effect),” Meg Gabe of MNM said.

Gabe, who shared on

traveling with infant and cloth diapers, said that a lot of mothers or primary caregivers do not use or exclusively patronize cloth diapers because they’re bulky, need a lot of effort, hassle and smelly.

“Di ba mas maayo nga tela kaysa plastik ang suoton ni baby (Isn’t it better to let our baby wear products with cloth material than plastic, right)? If we can give them (babies) a better option, why not?” Un said.

She also challenged the families to do what they can to lessen the existence of the carbon culprit. “If we choose to change from disposable to cloth, let me tell you, the effect is big,” Un added.

Also, in using disposable diapers, each baby contributes about 2,000 pounds of garbage that decompose for 250-500 years.

As for the rash, Un stressed that disposable diapers are so absorbent and they designed to do that, and because they are made of plastic, air could not circulate well keeping the baby in high temperature.

Hence, babies experience prolonged exposure to a hot, dirty environment and have a higher risk to get a diaper rash.
