Davao City raises alert level to counter bombing threats D
AVAO CITY --The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) is on alert following text messages that terrorists are planning to carry out a bomb attack in the locality.
Text messages warning of bomb attacks in key Mindanao cities, including Davao City, circulated following Monday’s twin explosions in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat. The alleged bomb plot was also reportedly related to the incident in Bohol, which was penetrated by some Abu Sayyaf members, some of whom were killed following an encounter with government troops. While they have yet to verify the information, DCPO director Senior Supt. Alexander Tagum on Friday said they would treat every information seriously. He, however, said there is no cause for alarm, assuring that all police units are on the lookout for the possible presence of terrorists. Tagum asked Davaoenos to stay vigilant and
conscious of their safety. Maj. Ezra Balagtey, Eastern Mindanao Command spokesperson, said that after the incident in Bohol, the military has strengthened its intelligence operation and is closely monitoring possible diversionary tactics by lawless groups. According to Balagtey, information “are coming by piece like a jigsaw puzzle,” admitting they too received similar text messages that terrorists will conduct bomb attacks in key cities in Mindanao. He assured that coastal areas, including the Davao Gulf and the Island Garden City of Samal, are secured by the Joint Task Force Haribon, which is compose of the Philippine Army, Philippine Navy, Coast Guard and the Air Force. A photo of aged women was chosen from among the close to 200 entries in the Hulagway photo contest for the Araw ng Dabaw 2017. “Kaway Nanay”, a photo by veteran photographer Jesus Tinapay, paid tribute to elderly Dabawenyos as they took the centerstage during the celebration held last March. Tinapay braved the scorching heat during the Parada Dabawenyo last March 16 to be able to capture the moment. The photo also perfectly captured the central theme of the celebration — Davao City’s journey the past 80 years. Tinapay will receive a cash prize of P 15,000 for his winning photo. DAVAO CITY --The City Tourism Office here expects an increase in tourist arrivals from neighboring Muslim countries following the creation of the Davao City Halal Industry Development Council. City Tourism Officer Gene Rose Tecson on Thursday said the halal industry can attract more tourists to the city, especially those coming from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the PhilippinesEast ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).
Mayor Sara DuterteCarpio signed Wednesday an Executive Order creating the halal council aimed at ensuring the marketability of locally-produced halal products in the domestic markets and in the membercountries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). “We are part of the ASEAN and BIMP-EAGA. These neighboring countries have Muslim citizens, so if we have a halal council, and establishments that are halal certified, it will be easier for
us to cater to their needs,” Tecson said. Tecson said they are expecting more visitors to come to the city once they realize that the locality is halal-ready. The creation of the council is also expected to push the city’s bid to become a Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) destination. However, Tecson said there is a need to educate the people about halal because many still think it just pertains to Muslims,
Tecson said there are many opportunities in the halal market, but only eight establishments in the city are halal-certified. “Only one of these eight halal-certified establishments is in the catering business and it got most of the customers during the ASEAN event in the city,” she said. Duterte-Carpio chairs the halal council and is co-chaired by the President of the Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce and
DAVAO CITY – Ten local government units (LGUs) in the Davao region violated the provisions of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. This was confirmed to the media on Wednesday by Virginia Lobaton, chief of the Solid Waste Management section of the regional Environmental Management Bureau, an agency under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Lobaton refused to name the concerned LGUs
in Davao region but told reporters that of the 10, two are cities while the rest are municipalities. RA 9003 provides for ecological solid waste management program for LGUs in the country to ensure the protection of public health and environment. The law also sets guidelines and targets for solid waste avoidance and volume reduction through source reduction and waste minimization measures. These measures include composting, recycling, re-
