Last midnight of the Good Friday, folksy faith healers the locals called as manambalay residing in Samal Island “renewed” their healing powers at the old Babak cemetery. “Without agreement, we will meet midnight of Good Friday at the old cemetery in Babak and we just didn’t mind each other while we never know each other, and we silently recited our respective oracions,” said 60-year-old Datu Tambalan (Doreto P. Palasan in real name), a known faith healer residing in Purok 5, Sitio Balite at Barangay Tambo in Babak district. “For me, I and others whom I don’t know knelled to pray in front of the big cross in the cemetery, others prayed in front or atop niches. It took me one hour to do the oracion, me alone and then I went home at 1 a.m.,” he said in an interview. He said that each time he does the oracion handed down to him by his maternal grandfather every Good Friday midnight, he is re-strengthened once again for another year of faith healing. Datu Tambalan is known to have extraordinary powers that he uses to heal and help people. He healed the dying, people who have given up the cure of the hospitals and doctors, women with breast cancer on terminal stage, those sick of other types of cancer, cast out bad spirits from possessed persons, inflicted thieves to admit their household crimes, reunited separated spouses, let foreigners come to the island to marry their chatmates in the internet by his oracion, lana (oil) and “healing works”. He would also preempt manghiloay (poisoners) and mapikpikay (so-called witches and givers of curses, sudden illness, black magic, bad luck spells), protect folks from various sickness, and even secure soldiers from being hit during ambush with his “habak” (amulet) sealed in a twisted bullet shell and many more wonders. Island of Faith Healers “Dire sa Samal perteng daghana ang manambalay, di malupigan sa kadaghan (Here in Samal there is abundance of faith healers, the island can’t he beaten for having many healers),”Datu Tambalan said. True enough, there was that healer named Kapitan Bali (means broken or fracture) in nearby San Isidro who was famous of healing and reconnecting bone fractures. He already died due to stroke sometime four years ago. But his brother has reportedly assumed Kapitan Bali’s folk healing at the PAL crash site in upper San Isidro. See faith, page 8

Mayor closes Mt. Talomo as entry point to Mt. Apo DAVAO CITY -- Mt. Talomo is excluded from the list of entry points for this year’s trekking to Mt. Apo, the country’s tallest peak. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio issued the reminder Tuesday amid reports that some mountaineers are using Mt. Talomo as an entry point to Mt. Apo. “We received evidence that mountaineers and tour operators are entering Mt. Apo through Mt. Talomo ,” the mayor said in a statement. She pointed out that such illegal activities must be stopped, reminding the public of the possible sanctions to be meted out to violators. “Mt. Talomo is one of the mountains and watershed areas that the local government of Davao is keenly protecting because of its important ecological value. It is the recharge area of the Talomo-Lipadas watershed and the home to the endangered Philippine Eagle,” she added. She also informed those who wish to visit the mountain that a comprehensive ecotourism and cultural plan will soon be rolled out. “This will cover regulations that will ensure that the watershed area is protected from human activities that are injurious and destructive to the environment,” she said. The plan is being undertaken by the city government of Davao, the Department of Tourism XI and the Philippine Eagle Foundation in partnership with the Bagobo community in the area. “We encourage tour operators, tourists and mountaineers to join us in the promotion of environmental protection and become active partners in ensuring that the next generations will still experience healthy, safe and sustainable biodiversity and ecosystem,” Duterte-Carpio said. The Protected Area Management Board of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the local government units around Mt. Duterte to hold bilateral meet with Brunei’s Bolkiah, Ind’sia’sWidodo

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will welcome next week Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and President Joko Widodo of Indonesia for a formal bilateral meeting. In a press briefing in Malacañang on Wednesday, ASEAN 2017 National Organizing Council (NOC) director general for operations Marciano Paynor said the meeting with the Brunei leader will be held on April 28 and on April 29 with the Indonesian leader. Laos has also requested to pay a courtesy call to Duterte, according to Paynor. He said President Duterte may have “pullaside” meetings with the other leaders. At the same time, President Widodo will join Presi-

dent Duterte at the launching of the Davao-General Santos-Bitung Ro-Ro sea linkage route on April 30 in Davao. President Duterte will hold a gala dinner for all the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders. the Palace welcomed the result of the Deloitte’s 2017 millennial survey conducted by one of the leading professional services firms in the country, Navarro Amper & Co., which showed that 89 percent of Filipino millennials expect improvement in the country’s overall economic situation in the next 12 months. Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella noted that this is significantly higher than the global average of 45 percent and regional average of 53 percent. The survey, where 8,000 millennials from 30 countries participated, also showed that 84 percent of Filipino millennials have expressed a positive outlook on the country’s social and political situation, higher

than the global average of 36 percent. Abella also announced a recent report done by the world’s leading midmarket business survey, Grant Thornton International Business Report (IBR), which showed that Philippine business leaders are among the most optimistic business leaders in the world, gaining a rate of 98 percent and placing the country in second place next to Indonesia. This is 18 percentage points higher than the 80 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016 and also the highest level gained by the Philippines since 2003, Abella said. The results of the survey reflected the sentiments of 2,400 business leaders in 36 economies. (PNA)

Historic the historic event? Yes, call it by accident, our acting as go-between the two Joses – Joe Ma and Joe de V. One morning when Joe Ma called Pablo Villaver at his Binondo office , we were with the Mindanao newsmen. Pablo introduced us to the great CPP leader. Actually, it was a re-introduction because for Joe Ma and us were seatmates at a meeting in 1988 in Dagupan, with then Gov. Rafael Colet and then Rep. Joe De Venecia. In our chat, Joe Ma asked us to act as his emissary to Joe De V for a personal message. Granted without thinking. That emissary work ignited, we believe, ignited the series of visits by the Philippine peace negotiating panel led by Joe De V and Jose Yap to explore the fraternal negotiations. The rest is history. * * * For sometime, we’ve been in the dark why fraternal strife has overstayed for so long, all of 50 years! It served only to underscore an ugly fact: one or more simply refused to see the light. Thank our stars, the dawn of understanding has FINALLY arrived! Let’s celebrate that. That it happened under the aegis of Mindanaoan President Duterte’s leadership has a

transcendental character. In Manila Times’ April 7, 20127 edition, our favorite columnist Kit Tatad paid homage to Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko whom he described as “that gentle and lovable Russian poet” who came to the Philippines in 1973 as guest of Malacanang. The New York Times on April 1, 2017 came out with a full-length obituary in connection with his death at 83 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had settled in America after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, where he had become a Member of Parliament and secretary general of the Soviet Writers. Though he was Russian, he was deeply admired in the U.S. and all over the world. According to Tatad, Yevtushenko lost his two grandfathers in the Stalin purges of the 1930s. Here’s Tatad on the Russian poet: “He was expelled from his university for joining the defense of Vladimir Dudintsev’s banned novel, Not By Bread Alone in 1956. Opposed the official campaign against Boris Pasternak, author of Doctor Zhivago and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1958. Denounced the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Interceded with KGB Chief Yuri Andropov on behalf of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, author of Gulag Archipelago and winner of the literary Nobel Prize, in 1970. Opposed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. In 1961, after the Kremlin opposed the raising of a monument at Babi Yar, a ravine near Kiev, Ukraine, where thousands of Jews had been machine-gunned and buried in a mass grave in 1941 by the invading Germans—the official excuse was that the Germans had killed not just Jews but other

nationals as well—Yevtushenko wrote his poem “Babi Yar” which became an instant sensation around the world. Its most powerful lines linger on. There are no monuments over Babi Yar But the sheer cliff is like a rough tombstone It horrifies me, Today, I am as old As the Jewish people It seems to me now, That I, too, am a Jew. Until 1980, Yevtushenko was barred from giving a public reading of this poem in the Ukraine. But wherever else he read it, it was invariably met with stunned silence at first, and then with thunderous ovation, according to the NYTimes obit. He received not less than 20,000 letters applauding the poem. The great Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich composed his famous Thirteenth Sympony on lines from Babi Yar and other Yevtushenko poems. In 1962, came the equally powerful “Stalin’s Heirs.” No less than Pravda, the Communist Party newspaper, ran the poem in its regular edition. It was likewise an instant sensation. It is a poem that finds profound resonance even now, in countries where some contemporaneous tyrants have tried to copy Stalin. It says: I turn to our government with a plea: To double And triple the guard at the gravesite So Stalin does not rise again, And with Stalin, the past. Deepening one of the core values of the institution I am serving, which is the “Makakalikasan”, the Department of Education has always been ardent and fervent in intensifying the value-laden principle of at all times, taking care of the environment; further bestowing public schools to be environmentfriendly and capacitating pupils and students to be fully aware and sensitive to the environment and environmental challenges. Now, how can we strengthen environmental education among schools? As environmental education is defined as a process that allows individuals explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment, key result areas that are expected lifts up that, when one is environment-educated, he or she is expected to develop a deeper understanding

of environmental issues and have the skills to make others informed and further, formulate responsible decisions. In a school setting, pupils and students, in a simple and responsible manner are being taught on how to throw their garbage properly, even on how to segregate waste and waste materials. In the classroom, school children are being informed and oriented where and how to dispose waste. Moreover, in the different subject learning areas, environmental education is being discussed and learned, advancing children’s responses to erring problems and consequences when wastes are not properly disposed. And yes, at young ages, children should learn and better adapt the components of environmental education such as the, 1) Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental challenges; 2) Knowledge and understanding of the environment

and environmental challenges; 3) Attitude of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or maintain environmental quality; 4) Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges; and 5) Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of environmental challenges. However, as environmental challenges take utmost aspects and principles that might seem deemed complicated for the school children, as educators, it is one of our responsibilities, not only to provide and deliver quality education but to educate as well our young learners on the importance and significance of the environment, of the place we live in. As we are one in taking steps to loving more our Mother Nature, may this value instills not just to be a value but to be an effective and valuable one that our children’s children can enjoy in the generations to come.

How we manage conflicts determines whether it is functional or dysfunctionalproductive or destructive, and of course, there are a variety of conflict styles that each have advantages in each situation. Collaborative approaches to conflict are most likely to protect the relationship. Conflict is natural. Conflict to differing degrees, occurs daily in everyone’s life. However, effective implementation of conflict management strategies requires various skills and abilities for addressing conflict. The core

abilities include: 1) Orientation skills include values, beliefs and attitudes that are compatible with effective management and orientation abilities include understanding own values and beliefs and understanding how attitudes and beliefs about conflict, justice, and respect affect how we deal with conflict; 2) Perception skills include the understanding that conflict lies not in the objective reality, but in the perceptions that individuals have of that situation, circumstance, or event and perception abilities include cognitive and affective perspective-taking; and 3) Emotional skills include behaviors to manage emotions and feelings such as anger, frustration, hurt, fear, confusion and

other emotions effectively and emotional abilities include that you should recognize your own emotions, one’s emotions, and be strategically express emotion, be able to control negative emotion and of course, be able to talk about emotion rather than acting it out loud. Thus, as a teacher, we should acquire and possess the aforementioned abilities so that we would be able to handle and manage conflicts smoothly and effectively. Constructing Dreams into Reality Meet Remie Patalita Jr., a persistent young individual from Barangay Bukangliwayway, Kibawe, Bukidnon who recently earned a promotion as a Line Quality Control at the Hanjin Heavy Industries (HHI) and Construction Co. Ltd. Philippines in Subic Zambales. Mr. Patalita was one of the 30 beneficiaries who completed Plumbing NC II, a technical course supported by the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP). For 20 days, the program beneficiaries went through vigorous and hands on training on plumbing to prepare them for possible employment.

Motivated by his dreams to develop education and support his family (a mother who is under medication and a younger brother in school), Mr. Patalita, worked his way to succeed. Months after he completed the technical course, he submitted himself to a free Pipe Fitting NC II offered by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). He then worked as a trainee at the Cagayan de Oro City Water District Office for a month, to gain experience. Given his credentials, he then received an opportunity to work as Pipe Fitter at one of the largest construction industries in the Philippines. This is an

employment opportunity, which DSWD worked out and supported through SLP’s Pre-employment Assistance Fund (PEAF) amounting to Php 3,500.00, to complete his documentary requirements to take the job. THE Misamis Oriental provincial government is planning to recommend to all local government units (LGUs) across the province to come up with their respective ordinances in imposing penalties on erring building owners which would defy structural integrity standards. This, as provincial engineer Lester Bolo said implementation of the National Building Code of 1972 is not enough reliance on the structural soundness of a building. Speaking during the 1st Forum of Municipal/ City Engineers and Building Officials, Bolo said the provincial government will be relying on an 11-page

checklist by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in adopting structural integrity standards for Misamis Oriental. However, Bolo admitted that unless LGUs would pass ordinances in converting the DILG checklist into law, Capitol could not force building owners to comply. Thus, Bolo met the municipal and city engineers and building officials from 21 LGUs in Misamis Oriental to tell their respective mayors and vice-mayors that such a law is needed. Race 1 of Round 1. Starting on 5th grid, April strategically managed to stay at the right position over the other riders on the first laps then focused on following the leader of the race. When he got the perfect timing to lead the pack, he made sure he to secure the lead until the final lap. His exceptional performance outstood the other riders including the Thai and SAC Class of 2015 2nd placer Patis Chooprathet. Race 2 was a tight battle for all of the riders especially for Team Suzuki Pilipinas’ Eane Jay Sobretodo and April King Mascardo who were leading the pack. Sobretodo unfortunately crashed while leading the 4th lap after an accidental hit by another rider causing him to not finish the race. During the last lap at the final corner of the race, one rider fell affecting the six riders on his trail including Borbon, Jr. and Mascardo. Even after the series of crashes, Mascardo finished 5th and Borbon made it at 12th place. After the Round 2, Team Suzuki Pilipinas managed to retain their good standing. Mascardo remains at the top spot, Borbon Jr. at 7th with 42 points with Sobretodo at 11th place. Despite the series of crashes, nothing serious happened to team and they are more than determined to face the next round of the challenge which will happen at Suzuka International Circuit in Japan on June 2 to 4, 2017.
