A LOCAL green coalition prodded key energy players to support the country’s ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury ahead of the observance of the Earth Day this Friday. In separate letters sent to Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Zenaida Monsada and to Philippine Lighting Industry Association (PLIA) President Jesus Pineda, Jr., the EcoWaste Coalition urged both to support the treaty, which seeks to protect human health and the environment from toxic mercury. FORMER presidential assistant on food security and Senatorial candidate Francis Pangilinan continued to drum up support for his agricultural concerns and vowed to rally this to the Senate once he gets elected.

Pangilinan met with local agricultural leaders in Cagayan de Oro City Tuesday and hopped to Iligan City and neighboring areas by afternoon, also meeting with farmers there who reported their El Niño concerns to him. Along this line, Pangilinan also continued bat-

ting for the passage of his baby initiative, the Sagip Saka. His Farmer Entrepreneurship and Development Bill pushes for farmers to become entrepreneurs so they can move away from subsistence farming into viable farm enterprises and creating more jobs. To change this mentality,
