Duterte bags USD 925-M possible investments from Middle East trip

Pr e si de n t Ro drigo Duterte and his delegation bagged some USD925 million, or about Php 46 billion worth of prospective investments during their trip to the Middle East during Holy Week.

According to Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, these investments are expected to generate some 26,000 jobs.

Here’s the list of potential investments from the recent trip of President Duterte in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar:

DOST to install 30 flood early warning systems in DVO region DAVAO CITY -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) regional office here will install 30 flood early warning systems in the Davao region.

M i r a s o l D o m i n g o, DOST-XI assistant regional director, said the specific locations will be mapped by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services, being the agency responsible

for monitoring the weather system.

Domingo told reporters during Monday’s Kapihan sa Dabaw at SM Annex that five of the 30 early flood warning systems will be installed in Davao City and the rest will be distributed to the other Davao provinces.

In line with the project, Domingo said DOST will pilot a flood drill in communities along the Lipadas

River, which runs through many villages in Toril District. The flood drill will take place on May 17 and 18.

Each early warning system, Domingo said, will help the community in mitigating the effects of flooding in their area and empowers people to protect and prepare against the destructive effect of floods.

Based on a DOST brief-

er, the community-based flood early warning system “protects people’s lives and properties through a nonstructural method. The instruments to be used are also cheaper compared to automatic or telemetry system.”

DAVAO CITY – The chief of the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) in Davao City said that 19,680 jaywalkers have been apprehended following the intensified

implementation of the jaywalking law here.

The number of apprehensions was recorded from December last year until March 31, retired Police Supt. Dionesio Abude, chief

Teaching Mathematics is not as easy as teaching one, two, and three or A, B, and C. It requires so much patience, perseverance, commitment and the most, the passion to painstakingly impart, share and teach the subject.

That is why teachers are strategizing schemes and

interventions on how to effectively teach Mathematics to students. As another component of high-quality Mathematics instruction is the use of evidence-based strategies. An evidencebased strategy or practice is one whose effectiveness is supported by rigorous research. Strategies can

involve the following the explicit instruction, peer tutoring, and cooperative learning.

Explicit instruction involves teaching a specific skill or concept in a highly structured environment using clear, direct language.

Peer tutoring involves two students working together on an instructional activ-

ity, periodically switching roles as tutor and tutee.

And, cooperative learning, involves students working together in a small-mixed ability groups to maximize everyone’s learning.

Yes, it is not as easy but with great hard work, we as public school teachers can ink changes to the lives of the students.

Learning about earthquakes

AN earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth’s lithosphere that creates seismic waves.

Earthquakes can range in size from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough

to toss people around and destroy whole cities. The seismicity or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.

Earthquakes are measured using measurements from seismometers. The moment magnitude is the most common scale on which

earthquakes larger than approximately 5 are reported for the entire globe. The more numerous earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5 reported by national seismological observatories are measured mostly on the local magnitude scale, also referred to as the Richter magnitude scale. These two scales are numerically similar over their

range of validity. Magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes are mostly imperceptible or weak and magnitude 7 and over potentially cause serious damage over larger areas depending on their depth.

The largest earthquakes in historic times have been of magnitude slightly over 9 although there is no limit to the possible magnitude.
