Pres. Duterte orders NFA to Task Force Davao’s anti-terror buy rice from local farmers drive ‘creating vigilant citizenry’ DAVAO CITY – President Rodrigo R. Duterte ordered the National Food Authority (NFA) to buy the rice produce by the farmers in the country instead of importing the commodity. Priorities must be given to rice farmers in the country than importing the commodity, President Duterte said before leaving for the

Middle East last week. “Why import rice? It will kill our farmers. We will not compete with our rice farmers,” the President emphasized. President Duterte’s resolve to protect local rice farmers came after he fired a high official at the Office of Cabinet Secretary for approving rice importation.

The President dismissed Undersecretary Maria Chiara Halmen Reina Valdez for overruling an earlier decision of NFA Administrator Jason Aquino to suspend the importation of rice as harvest is ongoing in the country. Duterte also denied reports of in-fighting among

DAVAO CITY – The anti-terrorism campaign of Task Force Davao is gaining positive results “in creating a wellinformed and more vigilant citizenry,” its commander said. Col. Bernard Neri, Task Force Davao commander, said Saturday afternoon that after the September 2016 explosion that ripped through the Roxas night market here, they received over 100 calls and tips from concerned citizens regarding

unattended bags or suspicious personalities. He stressed this is “an indication of a vigilant citizenry.” Last Friday, Task Force Davao joined a private motoring group and public utility van operators in putting stickers to all public utility vans plying between Davao City and southern parts of Mindanao like South Cotabato, Maguindanao and See drive, page A4

DAVAO CITY – President Rodrigo Duterte assured the public that the government is firmly handling terror threats to protect the people and the country. T he Pre s i d e nt a ls o “brushed aside” the terror threat reported by the United States embassy in the country. “Kaya natin (We can handle it) I already read that report in the newspapers,” Duterte told reporters in a press conference at the Davao International Airport shortly before departing for

his week-long official visit to the middle east. In an interview after the send-off rites, armed forces Chief of Staff Eduardo Año said the “terror threat is an unverified and unvalidated report of previous events that are being exploited.” “The us embassy has obligations to warn their citizens,” he said. Año, however, urged the people to be vigilant against suspicious persons. The US Embassy released a travel advisory to its citi-

DAVAO CITY -- The 10th Infantry (Agila) Division of the Philippine Army condemned the “unfounded allegations” hurled by militant group Karapatan against soldiers , who they accused of killing farmers and leaders in the area. In a statement, Capt. Alexander Cabales, acting chief of the 10th Infantry Division’s Public Affairs Office, said the accusations are “unfair” since there were no evidence presented or formal charges filed in the proper forum.

He urged Karapatan to submit the necessary evidence to the Philippine National Police (PNP) so that charges will be filed against those responsible for the killings. The leadership of the 10th ID will welcome and support any probe to determine the truth behind the allegations, he added. He also clarified that the 10th ID “does not condone any misbehavior or abuses of its members and will be very grateful to those
