SSS warns public of fake checks

THE Social Security System (SSS) has warned its members and the public of a possible spread of fake checks after the pension fund was informed that a grocery store received as payment a fake SSS check. In a news release issued Wednesday, SSS Senior Vice President for Luzon Operations Group Josie G. Magana said the fake SSS check, amounting to PHP20,000, was used to pay groceries at the Catanduanes Supermart in Virac, Catanduanes by a certain Gina S. Henzon. “According to Precious Sorra, secretary of the supermart, they accepted the check after verifying the voter’s ID of the buyer, which looked valid. CAGAYAN de Oro City-Towns in Lanao del Sur, the province of Bukidnon, and other areas in Mindanao were rocked by a strong tremor early Wednesday morning. Initial reports coming from the local governments of Wao, Lanao del Sur and Kalilangan, Bukidnon said residential structures and public buildings were affected by the tectonic 6-magnitude earthquake that was felt at around 5:21 a.m. on Wednesday. No casualty was reported. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) first reported the earthquake’s epicenter at Kalilangan but later changed it Wao. after the earthquake except for the families living in four uninhabitable houses which were made of wood, who temporarily sought shelter in their relatives. In a separate interview, Jennie Tamano, Lanao del Sur provincial information officer, said the quake caused power outages all over the province. Electricity was restored later in the morning. Tamano said patients in the upper floor of a still unnamed hospital were evacuated to the ground floor when the tremor started.

Did you know that it is our pride which causes most of the problems in our life, whether it’s in our family, at work, school, or with friends and neighbors. Our hidden, tricky pride is the reason we get hurt and angry at others. It’s also the reason we will not forgive them, but instead even try to hurt them back. So is there any hope for us? Can we ever start becoming genuinely honest and humble in our hearts? Yes, that’s the great news!

Mayor Inday Sarah Duterte, Honorable Members s of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, officers and members of the City Government, officers and members of the sponsoring organizations of this gathering, our honorees – the World War 11 Veterans, their relatives, guests, friends, ladies, and gentlemen, Good Morning. I am greatly honored to be invited to talk on the 75th commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan and to join everybody in paying respects to our departed heroes and the surviving veterans of the

My view of the history of our country is one of endless struggle for independence and freedom– three hundred years against Spain, forty years against the USA, and four years against Japan. That is why, in my vocabulary, any Filipino who fought against our colonizers is a hero, and those who fought the Japanese during the 2nd World War fall under this category. Mabuhi ang atong mga veteran. I take great pleasure in noting that we are commemorating the bravery of our veterans in this particular spot – the Veterans Memorial Park. This used to be called Clifford Park, named after Lt. Thomas Edgar Clifford Jr, an American regimental commander who died in Tamugan at the close

of the war against Japan. It is alright to recognize Americans who fought side by us with us against Japan, but first and foremost, we must recognize and honor our own heroes. Our own Filipino heroes who fought for our freedom across the centuries. And there are thousands of them, hundreds of thousands of heroes who resisted foreign conquerors throughout our history. And Davao has plenty of them. Unfortunately in Davao, they remain unknown. Our most known historical figure is Datu Bago, and he remains controversial because of the confusion about who is to be considered a Filipino hero. To repeat my definition, any Filipino who fought foreign invaders is a hero, no ifs, no buts. Datu Bago

stands tall among them because he kept the Davao tradition of fighting off foreign incursions, so that the Davao Gulf region would be the last territory to be occupied by the Spaniards. Davao is, indeed, a “cradle of noble heroes.” For you can only keep Davao free if the entire people cooperate to resist foreign aggression. After being conquered, Davaoenos continued the fight to become free. Many uprisings during the different colonial eras are recorded in Davao. In fact, Davao has earned the distinction of being the only region that has succeeded in killing two District Governors of our colonizers. Offering superior loading capacity with an area of 3.25 sqm and a maximum capacity of 735 kg, Super Carry is equipped with a light steering wheel and a low turning radius of 4.3M which allows effortless driving no matter how heavy the cargo is and ensures easy maneuverability even in tight areas. With the driver seat adjustable up to 90mm coupled with the extended portion of the passenger seat, there is enough legroom and space for the driver to lie down and combat fatigue in between long drives. The cabin also features numerous cubbyholes, trays, pockets and storage spaces for documents, food items and other necessities. Underneath the seats are thick glass fiber heat shields for better insulation. The bulb/ balloon type weather strip in the Super Carry also lessens noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). To add to the driving comfort, its pedals, gear shift knob and instrument panels are all ergonomically positioned. The vehicle’s rear window is also bigger and can readily be opened with an ergonomically placed locking mechanism. This allows a large amount of air to flow inside the cabin when needed. Fitted with theft prevention measures, Super Carry features a lock-on fuel tank cap, a secured spare tire mounting bracket, and battery with provision of lock. A Double Win for Team Suzuki Pilipinas at SAC 2017 It is a back to back victory for Team Suzuki Pilipinas as the Suzuki Asian Challenge (SAC) 2017 season begins at Johor International Circuit in Malaysia. Both Race 1 and 2 saw Team Suzuki Pilipinas riders Mario Borbon Jr. and April King Mascardo grabbing the top place making history once more by having the Philippine national anthem played for the first time at the said racetrack as well as achieving a grand slam win for the country at SAC Round 1. The 2017 SAC season sees 16 riders from 9 countries – Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Showing optimism from the very beginning, Team Suzuki Pilipinas already gave promising performances by clinching the pole position at the qualifying race. AFP chief: ASG leader among six bandits killed in Bohol ops

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff Gen. Eduardo Año on Wednesday confirmed that Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) leader Abu Rami was one of the six bandits killed in the encounter with government troops in Inabanga town, Bohol. “Yes, Abu Rahmi is among those Abu Sayyaf killed in Bohol operation, six killed among the enemies, our troops recovered another body on the site of encounter,” he added. In the same encounter, three soldiers and a police officer were also killed.

With this development, the AFP chief said the ASG must think twice of challenging government security forces and trying to sow terror, the AFP chief stressed. “I recognized the heroism of our soldiers, for doing the ultimate sacrifice as fastest as possible, I also acknowledge the help of the citizens who reported to authorities the presence of the armed men,” Año added. The AFP chief also called the ASG leader’s death a major blow to the bandit organization.

“It’s a major blow , Abu Rahmi participated in Samal kidnapping and also on the Canadians I can declare that the threat is over successfully after the siege in Barangay Napo, Inabanga, Bohol although we are still pursuing some of the remnants of the groups, our assault them continues to scour the area,” Año said. built under the Substance Use Recovery and Enlightenment (SURE) program, a pet project of Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza, a former drug dependent who also went to rehab facilities three times until he fully recovered to join public service. SURE has another facility, the Outpatient DropIn Center (ODIC) located within the provincial capitol grounds, which is managed by Mark Larry Chua, an international drug addiction therapist who also served as Plaza’s chief of staff. Since RTRC began serving patients in September last year, drug abuse victims in the province, mostly those who heeded the Oplan Tokhang (Knock and Plead) of the police came in weekly batches to avail of the rehab program. Legaspi, a former rehab center patient addicted into gambling who went into relapse thrice, said RTRC offers eclectic multi-dimensional approach which is a mixture of 12-steps narcotics anonymous program, therapeutic community, spiritual and psychological education, recreation and sports activities. She is assisted by Hyrawayne Nuique, a psychologist who used to be a guidance counselor of Bayugan City Comprehensive National High School. Both Legaspi and Nuique admitted that their monthly payments are lower from their previous works, but the tasks are more rewarding. “It’s totally different since at the school, we don’t have psychosis treatment,” Nuique said. “One thing that struck me most when I came here was passion. I want to give back to my clients for giving me this opportunity after my relapse,” Legaspi, a former special education teacher, said. Legaspi has given special attention to Haru whom she admitted to test her capability to the hilt as he did not cooperate and tongue-tied during the crucial three months of training and his being aloof develop awkward treatment of other patients. As it turned out, Haru whose Japanese father and Filipino mother and two other siblings are living permanently in Japan, became a happy-go-lucky boy in his early teenage years because his parent and guardian aunt gave him all the caprices while in high school and college in the University of Mindanao in Davao City. When he stopped schooling as third year computer science student, Haru started to get worse upon going back home in her aunt home in Bunawan town after he befriended a Muslim young man almost his age who belong to an alleged drug syndicate in the village of Masapya, a known shabu den in the province. He later became a high

value drug personality in Bunawan after Haru was known to be peddling shabu in large volumes like four kilos a week he delivered in the neighboring areas. His addiction worsened because all his earnings were consummated to his growing daily dosage of at least one gram. Two riding in tandem gunmen tried to shoot him while he was walking towards a sari-sari store in May last year but luckily he was left unscathed. Two months later, Haru was arrested in a police raid in their house, but her aunt managed to post the P300,000 bail bond. He admitted he continued to get hooked with shabu after his release from jail, but not for long when was frightened by the spate of extrajudicial killings happening in Bunawan and neighboring Rosario town, prompting him to yield to the police and heed a police friend’s advice for him to avail the rehab program at RTRC. Three other RTRC graduates have their tales to tell. One was a former Sangguniang Kabataan chairman, a mine tunnel worker and a shabu pusher. The former youth leader said he started sniffing shabu when he became a militiaman joining military operations against New People’s Army rebels while the 31-year-old gold mining portal guard admitted shabu has been a necessity for them to survive the obnoxious smell while inspecting excavators deep inside the tunnels. Claiming that he is now totally a changed young man, Haru told those still hooked on drugs that there is still a chance to change their ways even as this could not be that easy. “I knew it’s easy to enter into vices but it’s hard to get out from it,” he said. As a reformed former drug abuse victim who now wanted to become a policeman, Haru left a piece of advice to his batch mates at RTRC: “ There are only three things you should do: Get away from slippery places, slippery people and slippery events or else you might get stuck again there.”

The clash in Sitio Ilaya, Barangay Napo, Inabanga town left three three soldiers dead. Five bandits were also reported dead, according to a report reaching the PNP Region 10. But the heroic deeds of our local heroes are not mentioned in our history books. Many of us do not know their names. Not knowing our heroes and their deeds is not knowing our history. A people who do not know their history have nowhere to go. There is clearly a need to retrieve our heroes from oblivion so we can honor them properly for fighting for our country. That is why our celebration today is very important. We are recognizing and honoring our own Filipino heroes who fought during the 2nd World War. I see some names in the Programme. I hope at some future date, we will read their biographies and that they will be mentioned in some book that will tell of their deeds. Our history shows that we were defeated many times, but we also won some battles. We commemorate our defeats because they teach us lessons, but more importantly, we must

11 celebrate our victories, and honor our very own heroes because they are the source of our inspiration to make our nation “nararapat sa mga Pilipino, at mga Pilipino na nararapat sa Bayan. (A nation worthy of the Filiipinos, and Filipinos worthy of the country.) This is the new challenge facing us. We may have driven out foreign troops, but we still have a long way to go to make our country a better place for the Filipino people. We know the grave problems that continue to drag our country down. And we must continue to struggle to achieve our vision of a country that is developed and prosperous. At this stage of our history, new battle lines have been drawn, calling on us to take sides – hopefully the side for the common good. Three major fronts have been opened up: the social front, the political front, and the economic front. On the social front, there’s the war on drugs, criminality, and corruption. This war has the support of our people, but the success of this war will come to nothing unless we also wage war against war on the political front. That is, we must instead wage peace. For over four decades, the politics of “total war,” and “all-out war” have failed to solve the rebellion of the Bangsamoro and the New People’s Army. Mindanao continues to bleed, our country continues to bleed– unnecessarily wasting lives and resources that could have been put to better use. We need to rethink the war strategy. We must instead develop strategies of peace so that peace will finally prevail in our land to address more serious economic problems. The social and political stability of our country is a precondition for the success of our war on the economic front. Last year, a conservative estimate of our unemployed labor force was 2 million, while our underemployed stood at 7 million. According to the Asian Development Bank, 25% of our population lives below the poverty line – that’s 25 million people, 8 million of whom are food poor, living in extreme poverty. This dismal situation is not “nararapat sa mga Pilipino.” What is worthy of the Filipinos is a nation that is prosperous and progressive. We need new soldiers, warriors, and heroes who will wage war against unemployment, against poverty, against hunger, against underdevelopment. We must create wealth. We must make, build, manufacture, develop, and innovate. We must industrialize, we must increase trade and commerce. We commemorate the 75th Araw ng Kagitingan to honor our heroes and veteran who fought for our country’s freedom. They are our inspiration. The best way to honor them is to continue their fight so that we will achieve total freedom–freedom from hunger and freedom from poverty and make our nation “nararapat sa mga Pilipino.” Mabuhi ang atong mga beterano. Daghang salamat.

US exchange programs alumni present achievements By MARK FRANCISCO

FIVE groups who are beneficiaries of the United States – Alumni for Institutional Reform (USAIR) Program happily reported on the weekend the success of their project implementations in their respective localities here in Mindanao. US-AIR Program is a project of Mindanaobased alumni of United States governmentsponsored exchange programs. These alumni wish to give forward to their community the things that they have learned as exchange beneficiaries themselves, thus US-AIR Program was born. During the project summit last Sunday which brought together six individuals who implemented five projects as well as their backers from US-AIR Program alumni who lent in moral support, the US Embassy also sent in a

representative. Each project was earlier granted by the US-AIR Program P25,000 each for it to be implemented in its respective locality. The first beneficiary was the Philippine Trial Judges League represented by Judge Marlon Jay Moneva. In his report, Moneva successfully implemented the Outstanding Lupon search in Plaridel, Misamis Occidental. The second project was establishing an Academy for Young Leaders in Maguindanao by YES Alumni Association Philippines. The project aims to empower the youth by allowing them to identify issues in their community and devise an action plan to help solve them. The third project is women empowerment in Sta. Josefa, Agusan del Sur as organized by HINIUSA, Inc. The fourth project is providing livelihood skills

to erstwhile Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels in Linuan, Basilan. This project is initiated by Basilan Young Leaders Program or known in the vernacular as SINAG. The fifth project is Youth Hours, where student leaders from all over Northern Mindanao are gathered every year, sharing their experiences in their respective universities and colleges and bringing back to their home institutions the learnings they have learned from other student leaders. This project was implemented by TOSPAC-XCEL under US-AIR Program beneficiaries Jimae Faith Magnaye and Prince Keno Villegas. US-AIR Program project grantee Judge Jerlie Luis-Requerme has high hopes that each project will be sustained in their respective localities beyond the calendar allocated by US-AIR Program.
