Despite clash in Bohol, it’s business as usual in Camiguin By GERRY LEE GORIT Correspondent

CAGAYAN de Oro City-The firefight between a group of armed men and security forces in Bohol will have no effect in its neighboring province of Camiguin as thousands of tourists flocked to this island-province in time for the Holy Week.

At least five persons were killed as the clash between 10 suspected armed members of the Abu Sayyag Group continued in the town of Inabanga on Tuesday, reports said. One of the casualties was a policeman, the report added. Joint police and military forces engaged the armed group after residents informed authorities of the

presence of heavily armed persons on board three pumpboats along the river in Barangay Ilaya in Inabanga. Superintendent Reggie Oñate, Camiguin police’s deputy provincial director for operations, said they have been on full alert following an order from the regional police command even before the Lenten season.

Mambajao Mayor Jurdin Jesus Romualdo, in a text message Tuesday afternoon, said the local government was monitoring the situation in Bohol as tourists visiting the White Island and Mantigue Island, two of the tourist spots in Camiguin, were not evacuated. The White and Mantigue islands are both facing the southern part of Bohol.

SSS warns public of fake checks

THE Social Security System (SSS) has warned its members and the public of a possible spread of fake checks after the pension fund was informed that a grocery store received as payment a fake SSS check. In a news release issued Wednesday, SSS Senior Vice President for Luzon Operations Group Josie G. Magana said the fake SSS check, amounting to PHP20,000, was used to pay groceries at the Catanduanes Supermart in Virac, Catanduanes by a certain Gina S. Henzon. “According to Precious Sorra, secretary of the supermart, they accepted the check after verifying the voter’s ID of the buyer, which looked valid. However, upon deposit of the check with their bank, they were informed that it was spurious,” said Magana. Sorra immediately reported the fake check to SSS-Virac. SSS-Virac See sss, page 11
