Cagayan de Oro is truly booming with the opening of several establishments (and many more coming our way) making every inch of the city a business hub. The gateway to Northern Mindanao just got bigger with investors pouring in from all over the world. Two more adaptations by Layeta Bucoy of Shakespeare’s works are lined-up for TXS: “Titus Andronicus” in December of this year and “Hamlet” (February 2014). Truly, arts and culture in Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao is alive and well. Cine Europa 16 will once again be en route to the Rodelsa Hall, Mindanao’s premiere venue of choice, for the 5th time with a Swiss film on the gala night. “Operation Libertad” by filmmaker Nicolas Wadimoff is a story about the destiny of young Swiss revolutionaries in the late 1970’s. SWISS FILM TO OPEN
CINE EUROPA 16 AT RODELSA HALL In the latest edition of Cine Europa here in Cagayan de Oro, a critically-acclaimed Swiss film will pave the way for the fourday film festival at Liceo U’s Rodelsa Hall. “Operation Libertad” by filmmaker Nicolas Wadimoff tells a fictional story about the destiny of young Swiss revolutionaries in the lates 1970’s. This film caught the attention of international critics and has landed a spot as one of the featured films in the Director’s Fortnight at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival in France. As stated in www.swissinfo.ch, the film revolves around a revolutionary group that tries to uncover a 1970’s money laundering operation by a South American dictator in a Swiss bank. This mock documentary has received favorable reviews from film buffs and movie critics. Gracing the official opening of the 16th Cine Europa in Cagayan de Oro is no less than the Head of Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines Ambassador Guy Ledoux. Other dignitaries from the EU member countries are also expected to grace the Cagayan de Oro leg.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream T he Xavier Stage (TXS), the repertory theatre company of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, presented its preIslamic Maranao version of William Shakespeare’s creation, A Midsummer Night’s Dream which premiered September 21 at the XU Little Theatre. The play was directed by Hobart P. Savior of Xavier Center for Culture and Arts. Savior said that the play intends to bring modern audiences back to the classics with its deeper truths which William Shakespeare had captured in his tragedies and comedies. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is considered as the most popular comedy written by Shakespeare. It was written in the middle of 1594 to 1595. Taking place in a mythical place and an enchanted forest, it portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with woodland fairies and a duke and duchess. The story evolves in melodramatic and comedy form, bringing out an unusual story of love and magic. This artistic show is a new engagement of TXS towards artistic form to make theatre an expression and a philosophy of life for its audience. Originally, this play contains Greek settings and TXS presented it in a preIslamic Maranao sort through the adaptation from the Sining Kambayoka Ensemble of Mindanao State University Marawi. According to Savior, the play combines the local lure among
the Maranaos and the masterful plot of Shakespeare which made the play exciting. It is a combination of presentational theatre art form, movement, lofty Cebuano language, music and sensitivity culture making A Midsummer Night’s Dream an ambitious work and an accomplishment of a young theatre company whose identity and art form are continuously challenged. He also said that mounting A Midsummer Night’s Dream entailed careful handling of both the Shakespearean material and the Maranao culture and folklore in its ancient times. A thorough study on content and form was employed to deconstruct the text and a meticulous semiological dramaturgy was thought of and applied to come up with an adequate performance text rendered by TXS. Thus, layers of elements, thought processes, significant details and truths are considered so to simplify the complex experience that the material inherently processes. The cast comprised 22 persons, who are students, faculty, staff and alumni of Xavier University. The Xavier Stage mounting of A Midsummer Night’s Dream adaptation is part of the group’s “Realizing Shakespeare” series which comprise the TXS’ 3rd Theatre Season productions. TXS will also be presenting adaptations of “Titus Andronicus” (December) and “Hamlet” (February 2014) by Layeta Bucoy.

Amadea on her Ms CdeO 2013 experience…
T
he 20-year-old graduate of Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management at the Liceo de Cagayan University, Amadea Lucia Taperla Piatti of Barangay 15, Cagayan de Oro City won the crown of Ms CdeO 2013, August 24 at the Limketkai Atrium. Amadea also received most of the special awards which included Miss Sanctuary Spa, Miss Hairscape Salon, Miss GMA Kapuso 2013, Best in Mags Casual Wear, Miss Myra 300E, Miss Flawlessly U, Darling of the Press, Best in Swimsuit and Miss Rejuv Gensing. To note, Amadea co-hosted the 2012 edition of the Ms CdeO pageant and when asked how the experience was hosting it last year and now that she is one of the candidates, she said – “The pressure and the whole experience are so much different. Hosting it last year was a great experience but it’s definitely incomparable to the experience I had in joining it this year”. Amadea also narrates her experiences during the course of activities laid out for the candidates during the pageant – “Every single moment spent with the girls and with the organizers was memorable, and I'd never change any of it. But the best part for me would definitely be our white water rafting adventure with the girls. It was my very first time and I can tell that we just had the happiest time of our lives”… “The whole three months. Every single moment spent with them will forever be remembered”. Mau, as she is fondly called by her family and friends, is now Ms CdeO. This year, JCI (Junior Chamber InternationalPhilippines) Bai Lawanen organized the pageant. Mau is now one of the faces of Cagayan de Oro City and JCI Bai Lawanen - “I take pressure as a good thing. It simply pushes me to my limits… We actually already had many activities lined up since the night we were crowned. We already had a series of exposures and guesting in media stations, and now we are planning on the different activities from our advocacies, that we will be conducting for the city as Ms CdeO winners”, she enthused.

At a young age, Mau already dreamed of becoming a beauty queen – “Selffulfillment and service. Since I was a little girl it has always been one of my dreams to become a beauty queen. In the pageant, the top five candidates that include Piatti were given the same question: “How do you describe a world-class Kagay-anon?” Mau’s graciously answered: “As we all know, Cagayan de Oro is known to be the pride of white-water rafting. We have different tourist destinations that we could be proud over the whole world but one thing that we can truly be proud of are the qualities that the true Kagay-anon has” then went on to tell the audience about some qualities of a true Kagay-anon based on personal experience. First that she said was that the people of CdeO are very hospitable. “Kagay-anons offer the most beautiful smiles”, her father is a foreigner who fell in love with a Kagay-anon.
Mau continues, “the love for God, selfrespect and the love for God’s creations. Kagay-anons respect the beautiful tourist destinations in Cagayan de Oro City and God-given creations” and the third quality she said is resiliency. Mau said that Kagayanons have faced tough things lately and it was not easy, yet they still remain stronger than ever. “With these qualities, we surely show to the world that it’s more fun in the Philippines and definitely much more fun in Cagayan de Oro City,” Mau concluded. The well laid out answer did not come easily for Mau - “To be honest, a lot of things went through my mind at the last seconds of the pageant. I was thinking about my family, my supporters in my barangay, school and most especially my dad (deceased) who was guiding me all along the whole pageant. I never wanted to disappoint them. Win the crown or not, I knew I gave my all in this competition”. Mau is passionate about CdeO, she tells us why – “I have always been a huge fan of the white water rafting adventure, the different tourism destinations in the city, what I like most is the culture and traits that we Kagay-anons have. I have always admired
the spirit of the Kagay-anon, our hospitality to tourists and to fellow Kagay-anons, and our resiliency”. Mau wants to be remembered as a Miss CdeO who is “an emblem to the city, to be remembered as the Ms CdeO who has made a difference in the city, a woman who cared a lot about the environment and valued our tourism products, a woman who became the real representative of Cagayan de Oro, a woman of integrity”. In her candidate profile, Mau claimed that she has a big dream of becoming the future Regional or National Director of the country’s Tourism Industry. Making the city among the top tourist destinations of the world is what she visions and desires. Mau thanks all her family, friends and supporters – “Words will never be enough to thank all the people behind this success. Fastest, most luxurious car to enter Philippines
T
he Autohub Group will be introducing the Rolls Royce Wraith in the Philippines this November, Willy Q. Tee Ten (WQT), the company’s President and Dealer Principal, said in an interview with this magazine during his visit in Cagayan de Oro City. This is considered as the car for the curious, the confident and the bold and reported as the most fastest and luxurious car its manufacturing company Rolls Royce Motor Cars has ever made. This two-coupe sports car was first presented in England and across Europe two months ago and designed by Serbian designer Pavle Trpinac . It will appear with two-door and built around a steel monocoque, with a double front bulkhead – a way to help isolate car occupants from engine noise. Wraith’s form is based on its luxury saloon brother Rolls Royce Ghost. The wheelbase is 183mm shorter than the latter which has 3,295 mm. It has a length of 5,268 mm and width of 1,948 mm. It also has a chasing speed hitting 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds despite its 2360 kilograms heft. Rolls Royce cars are considered as the Crème de la Crème of cars, said Tee Ten. It was inaugurated in the Philippines last June 19. It is a very niche market, according to him. This means that cars are made to satisfy the buyers, the reason it takes a lot of time to be
delivered. The cars are usually customized according to customers’ preferences and normally take six months to be delivered. Buyers of Royce Rolls cars are certainly “Captains of Industry”. They are also kind of people who wants to see the fruit of their labor and would like to reward themselves. Being the official dealer of the cars, he ensured that his company offered the best cars. Tee Ten admitts that there is still a lot of room for improvement but he also said that his company substantially boost in the past year and a half. Mirage G4 Unleashed FAST Autoworld Philippines Corporation offered Kaga-anons a sneak preview Friday night of the all-new Mirage G4 Sedan at its Mitsubishi dealership showroom along Gusa, Cagayan de Oro. Ms. Rhoda Tibayan, regional sales and marketing manager for Mindanao, said Mirage G4 is Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp.’s (MMPC) latest offering and is also ready to be previewed at select dealerships nationwide. MMPC announced that the same preview has been made in Iloilo and Bacolod showrooms of Avescor Motors; Mandaue, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro showrooms of Fast Autoworld; Karasia in Bajada, Davao; Mindanao Integrated Commercial Enterprise in General Santos; and Maximotors in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. Ms. Tibayan told expectators prior to the unveiling: “Your anticipation equals our excitement to present the all-new Sedan Mirage G4,” even as she said that the packages being offered for the G4 fit those who are first-time would-be car owners, employees and even new grads, so long the car plan is coursed through their banks. She said Mirage G4 is fuel efficient and roomy and are offered in all of Fast Autoworld’s eight branches – five in the Visayas and three in Mindanao. Aside from the CDO dealership, two others are located n Butuan and Ozamis. Ms. Tibayan said the sneak preview gives interested buyers to take a glimpse of the exciting all-new model before its official sale in October. “This is their (prospective buyers’) chance to take advantage of Mirage G4 by doing preorder arrangements,” said Ms. Tibayan. The pre-order exclusive is in the form of a P40,000 outright markdown of the Mirage
G4 from its suggested retail price. It can also be applied as reduction in down payment for financing transactions or to offset the cost of insurance of the unit. The pre-order arrangement also comes with the payment of P10,000 reservation fee of the Mirage G4. The P10,000 is considered a refundable deposit, which entitles a buyer to a pre-order coupon that must be registered at the Mirage G4 pre-order website at www.mirageG4.ph. The Mirage G4 is the sedan version of the all-new Mirage hatchback, Ms. Tibayan explained. But despite sharing the same 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder MIVEC engine, the sedan version offers more legroom through the extra 10-centimeter wheelbase length, slightly wider front and rear track widths with an additional 1.5 cm., slightly increased turning radius by 40 cm. as well as an additional 1-cm. ground clearance. The Mirage G4 is also designed for longer trips with more supple suspension setup, a 42-liter fuel tank (that hatch has 35 liters), a trunk space of 450 liters, which is almost double the hatch’s 235-liter capacity, and rated fuel efficiency of 21 kilometers per liter. MMPC said the Mirage G4 also offers exceptional value, as the sedan will be equipped with dual-SRS airbags, electronic time and alarm control system (Etacs) and multiinformation display. The Etacs is Mitsubishi’s unique system that controls all of the Mirage G4’s electrical components. nother international marathon is set to take place in Cagayan de Oro City this December 15, 2013 as PryceGas Inc. together with Circle Productions Inc. will be organizing its second International Marathon. The marathon will be done at Pryce Gardens, Lumbia, and this city. In a media launching held recently, President of Circle Productions Jeffrey Ang said that this marathon aims to become one or if not, the most prestigious running event in the country. This is also to promote the tourism of Cagayan de Oro City to the whole Philippines and as well to other countries. The organizers are expecting more runners during the marathon, exceeding the total number of the participants during the first international marathon which garnered 10,000 runners. A total of one million pesos in cash and raffle are at stake. Winners in different categories will receive prizes. In addition, there would be separate winners for male and female. First Category is the 5km All-Filipino Category. The champion will receive a cash of P20,000.00, the second placer will have P15,000.00, P10,000.00 for the third placer and P5,000.00 for both fourth and fifth placers. Second category is the 21km which is also an All-Filipino run and the champion will receive P60,000.00. The second placer will receive P40,000.00 and the third placer will receive P20,000.00. Both the fourth and the fifth will receive P10,000.00. 42km, on the other hand, is an open category where all nationalities are encouraged to join and win prizes. The champion will receive a cash prize of P100,000.00. The second placer will get P60,000.00 and the third will have
P40,000.00. As the same, fourth and fifth placers will have P20,000.00 each. Medals will be given to the top ten placers for each category. Finishers from all categories will also receive a certificate, hydration bottle. For the winners of 42km and 21km, they will also receive additional medal, sling bag and finisher’s jersey. For All-Filipino categories, anyone may register and run in these sorts, however, prizes will just be given to Filipino participants. The course will take runners from the scenic PryceGas Gardens of Lumbia, down to the city, passing through Pryce Plaza Hotel before going downtown via Rodelsa Circle and Velez Street. They will then proceed to Barangay Tablon and back up to Pryce Gardens for the finish. Registration fee for the five-kilometre run is P600.00 which includes jersey, race bib with timing chip and hydration bottle. For the 21k, registration fee amounts to P1,200.00 which give out jersey, race bib with timing chip, sling bag, hydration bottle, finisher’s shirt and medal as inclusive. For 42-km marathon, the registration fee is P1,800.00 which includes jersey, race bib with timing chip, sling bag, hydration bottle, finisher’s shirt, medal and carbo-loading dinner. The registration started September 19, 2013 at all Pryce Gas Inc. offices and outlets nationwide, Olympic Village, Chris Sports, Sprints Multisport Store and La Cabana Spa. Influences & Inspirations Glenn Palacio - this Cagayan de Oro photographer takes us for a ride through his “photographic journey” and how inspiration keeps his heart growing and going. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE PHOTOGRAPHY?
“I’m all about the passion. I’ve had a lot of things & hobbies going on back then but I’ve always been into photography. Maybe the greatest trigger was being inspired by the images of the people I’ve been looking up to. Ricky Ladia, Manny Librodo, George Tapan, Paul Ticzon, Parc Cruz, Jiggie Alejandrino, Lito Sy and of course my father. The rest of my inspirations have a great collective work around them and I get really inspired to do photography just by viewing their photos. I love to do photography because it’s dramatic and inspirational yet simple.”
HOW DID YOUR GRANDFATHER AND FATHER INFLUENCE YOUR PASSION?
“My dad and grandfather are 2 very different people. My grandfather, Dick Palacio, was a broadcaster and a press club member, he had the gift of speech and his thought process was one of the best here in the Philippines. He was one of the very few who was licensed by the KBP and that would really explain a lot on his critical thinking and elaboration of his ideas. My grandfather taught me how to convey emotions through stories. My dad, on the other hand, is an engineer. He is technical and studies everything that needs to be studied in order for him to apply it to his work. He loves photography; I can recall being wowed by his shots when he was still travelling all over the Middle East. I guess they both have their influences on me, my grandfather would be the way I tell my stories and my father would be how I can get technical in taking that shot”.
HOW DID YOU LEARN PHOTOGRAPHY?
“I read a lot of books, magazines and online guides on how to do photography. But I’ve never had a formal education on photography. I’ve attended workshops and mentorships program but the best way I got to learn photography is to do, well, photography. I remember back then that I would walk from Divisoria to high-ridge in Aluba, Macasandig and just take photos of anything, anyone and the sunset that happens over the city.”
RELATE YOUR PASSION FOR FOOTBALL (SOCCER) TO PHOTOGRAPHY
“Football and photography are really quite the same, when you want to do football - you have to practice, train and discipline yourself to be in the best possible form you can be. Same with photography, you have to prepare mentally, physically and emotionally for each shoot. There will be off days and there will be good days but form is temporary, class is permanent”.
HOW WAS IT STARTING OUT IN THIS PROFESSION?
“Starting out in photography, I had a hard time because of the competition and the limited resources that I possessed. I had to empty my cup from previous teachings that were too old and traditional so that I can learn the new techniques. But I never forgot everything because I wanted to mix the strengths of both teachings to cancel out the weaknesses. My number 1 supporter in my photographic journey is my family. My parents and my sister were with me since the start of my venture. I can remember right after I quit my office job that my mother, sister, and I had a “heart-toheart talk” and we discussed things on why I wanted to do photography. They supported me all the way after they heard how I explained why photography to me was my other half”.
WHO MENTORS YOU IN PHOTOGRAPHY?
“On the business side of photography, I’m quite honored and proud that I’m mentored by Ma’am Harvey Chua. Alongside with Sir John Chua, the couple has been running one of the most successful advertising studios in the country. On the technical aspect, I’ve been guided by few of the greats in photography in the country. But all that I am right now is somewhat greatly inspired by the teachings of Nikon Professional Sir Ricky Ladia. He is one of the best in the business and his passion in doing photography has inspired my own photography in leaps and bounds. I may not always be communicating with my mentors but their photographs move me where words can never fulfill”
WHAT GENRE IN PHOTOGRAPHY DO YOU LIKE BEST?

“To be honest, I started out with street photography. Life happens in constant motion in the streets, you can’t pause or rewind certain things as you see them. But the genre which I like best now was the genre that I hated the most before - Portraiture. Given the chance I love to just take photos no matter what the genre it falls in. A lot of people say that I have to specialize in a single genre, but a camera and an artistic hunger for life and what it possesses is too powerful to be contained in just one genre”.
WHAT'S THE MOST DIFFICULT SHOOT YOU'VE DONE SO FAR?
“I guess every shoot is difficult because I have to deal with models and different scenarios. I tend to over think and over prepare and thus I always have a lot of equipment that I carry with me. I’ve had a few notable bad shoots before and I got really down. But I guess that is how we all grow as people and as photographers. Like photography, we have to develop from our negatives and be an inspiration”.
ON WEDDINGS AND DEBUTS: WHAT PARTICULAR MOMENT DO YOU WANT TO CAPTURE?

“On debuts, it would be the dance of the debutante with her father. A lot of people from a distance won’t notice but it’s during that moment that debutantes and fathers are emotional. The father might be thinking: “next stop would be a wedding” or something like that (laughs). On weddings, it would be that certain smile of the groom and the bride when the officiating minister finishes the wedding ceremony. That certain smile when they just look at each other and their eyes, their facial expression, that certain moment best defines a new chapter in their lives”.
ON PORTRAITURE: HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A PORTRAITURE SHOOT?
“I over prepare. It is better to be over prepared than to have some equipment lacking. A half-baked plan will always result in a half-baked shoot. I carry with me a lot of lighting equipment, lenses and some modifiers so that I can get the shots that I want”.
WHICH DO YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE DOING? STUDIO SET UP? OR ON LOCATION?
“I’m quite proud that I’m a strobist photographer, I use speedlights and studio lights when I do my shoots but I can also shoot using with available light. I started out with ambient/available lights and now love the magic of speeedlights. As long as it’s a shoot, I’ll feel comfortable and fit right in. I guess with my current passion, it is the fuel what helps me shoot everyday in a studio and even outside on location and experiment more”.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE SHOOTING OUR COVER... A collaboration with Don Cristobal, Inyaki Yuson and Mary Jone Alo of MACDO
“The cover shoot was quite exciting for me because I will be celebrating my first year in doing photography this September and I’m deeply honored to be part of this project. I had to bring all the lights and gizmos for the shoot and (as usual) had to over think and over prepare. I wanted the shoot to be perfect and top class with only minimal editing. The cover is something that best defines the kind of work that I like; I like it simple, plain and clean. With big names like MyPhone and the Ms.Cagayan de Oro 2013 winners, the shoot had a lot of pressure on me. But I thank God for helping me pull off another successful shoot, my assistant Ivan Jumawid for the technical support, Sir Shaun Alejandrae Yap Uy for the chance to be a part of the history, my family for the love and support through thick and thin and my mentors who have made me a photographer this city can be proud of”.
