I can always tell when The Journey Magazine hits the streets because my phone starts ringing, and I love it. My calendar stays full, and I have quality clientele. I am very pleased with my investment with The Journey. I apply permanent makeup and eyelash extensions. I have just recently opened an all natural AVEDA makeup line (the only one within a 75 mile radius). My hardwork and dedication as well as my investment in The Journey have allowed me this opportunity. It’s not my only form of media advertising, but I always reserve space and enjoy results of The Journey. The readership is enjoyed by my clientele, and it’s just a perfect fit for me. all is here, fall is here! Well, maybe not temperature wise, but surely summer will get the memo and the fall temps will arrive soon enough. Every season that arrives, similar to the way I feel about every issue of the magazine, seems to be my favorite. I guess it’s because of the change a new season brings and all the new memories that will be made during a new phase and season of life. For our family, fall means early morning soccer games, Bombers fall ball, hunting season, pumpkin parties, Aggie football, special mommy/daughter time while the boys are hunting, fall festivals, and lots of time outdoors enjoying the fall weather. But, through all of our activities, the cherry on top, is seeing God’s goodness. Being able to look around and see the colors change, the weather change, and the season change to remind us that God created us in His image. It’s amazing for me as a mom to see how with every year that goes by and a new season arrives, my children change and develop and grow from the year before. Can you imagine how God looks at His children? I am just thankful that they are growing, changing, and developing. Hopefully, we embrace that for our W_V TQ^M[ 1\ _I[ IT_Ia[ MI[a IVL N]V I[ I KPQTL J]\ KPIVOM I[ IV IL]T\ KIV [WUM\QUM[ JM LQNÅK]T\

One change we made was with this great issue. We have never had a green/organic issue. What a great idea (Kim Iribarren) for this perfect season. To look at the ways God gave us His nature and organic goodness. There are so many ways to see the organic beauty—whether it’s through a beautiful person, goodness in nature and our food, or that organic authenticity only He can give us. We are always looking at ways to change, grow and continue to develop here at The Journey. We have some exciting changes coming up and look forward to sharing those with you in the near future! As fall arrives, I pray for your new season for your family and your life! Happy fall! STEPHANIE OLIVER

A BALANCED APPROACH TO WELLNESS

MJ[\MZ¼[ LMÅVM[ JITIVKM I[ ¹IV IM[\PM\QKITTa XTMI[QVO integration of elements, physical equilibrium, or mental and emotional steadiness.” Balance is not something easy to achieve in this day and age, but it is an important part of living a vital and healthy lifestyle. Living a balanced lifestyle is all about t ime management. Carving out t ime for you and the things you love, your family, work and friends will help you enjoy life more than ever and lead to a healthier you!

W

Here are a few t ips to help you evaluate and prioritize the balance in your life. Think B -A-L-A-N-C-E! Body – Take an inventory of what’s ailing you. A re you stressed – try yoga. A re you out of shape? Begin a walking program or take a toning class to improve muscle tone and strength. Allow – A llow others to help you. Guess what? Wonder Woman really doesn’t exist. If you need help from others, ask for it. A ssign more household chores w ith the k ids. If a friend offers to help you w ith a project, don’t play the martyr – let them help you! Look – Look at your schedule. Are you involved in activities you really don’t want to participate in any more? Is the activity necessary, or do you just feel obligated? Eliminate all unnecessary t ime robbers from your schedule. Analyze – A nalyze your work and life balance. A re you so stressed from work you can’t enjoy your family? Can you work an earlier schedule so you have more t ime at home? No – Oops, there it is again. We southern women have more trouble w ith this don’t we? But it can be done. Look in the mirror and [Ia Q\ _Q\P I [UQTM ¹6W 1¼U [WZZa J]\ \PI\¼[ VW\ I Å\ NWZ UM º Care – Practice self care. Self care doesn’t have to look like a couple of hundred dollars and a spa day. COVER STORY

udrey Hepburn, one of the most iconic women for beauty and fashion, once said, “Happy girls are the prettiest.” Who can stop the voice in her head of mom or g randmother saying, “Beauty is only skin deep.”? Women are relentlessly bombarded with images of outward beauty, but lately, there is a movement to help women discover their true, God-given beauty. Even major corporations are getting in on the shift. The Dove Brand launched their Campaign for Real Beauty in 2004 and it is still going strong. According to Dove’s study, T he Real Truth about Beauty: Revisited, only 4 % of women around the world consider themselves beautiful and only 11% of girls around the globe are comfortable using the word ‘beautiful’ to describe themselves.

A

Women readily recognizing the beauty in others, but seldom find it in themselves. When we as women consistently fight a low self-image and fail to recognize our natural beauty, we are much less likely to accomplish the g reat things we were created to do. In lieu of our inspiring woman article this month, we want to turn the proverbial mirror toward each of our readers to let you see the inspiring woman in your reflection. In this effort, Brenda Weaver of Bella Salon, Amanda Skinner of Loudhouse Crossfit and Angie Nichols of Something Abundant ministries share insights for revealing your natural beauty--countenance, body, and soul.

B R E N D A W E AV E R renda Weaver, owner of Bella Salon, spends her days helping women find their true beauty. As a teenager, she enjoyed playing with hair and makeup and getting ‘all dolled up’ for special occasions. Her mom was always beside her doing the girl thing and her dad was the realist, making sure her school work was accomplished and she was ready to enter the real world. After

graduation, she and her friend, Amelia, headed straight to Austin. Brenda planned to get a business degree a nd o ne d ay open a salon and gym. After a few years of college and five years of doing hair, she has accomplished her goal of opening a salon. She says, “It takes a village, and I must say I have a pretty awesome village.” She is excited to be on this journey of helping women. At the salon, Brenda and her staff offer many services to help _WUMV ÅVL IVL MVPIVKM \PMQZ VI\]ZIT JMI]\a <PMa WNNMZ )^MLI Hair care, body care, and skin care and make up. Hair services are offered by Brenda, Leah Garcia and Jessica Hearnsberger. In addition, Carrie Love does massages, Ashley Conlon gives facials and Lynanne Alsbrooks offers permanent cosmetics and eyelash extensions. Aside from the salon, you can also visit a fabulous boutique, Poise, by Amelia Commander. Women should tailor their beauty regimen to their specific needs and realize that this is more than the occasional trip to the hair salon. The staff at Bella Salon and Boutique have been trained and certified by Aveda and can help you with any problem you might be having with your hair or s kin. Aveda’s Hand and Foot Relief are best sellers and they intensely moisturize, nourish and condition while promoting visible i mprovements in skin texture and appearance of age spots. If you are feeling stressed and run down, Aveda offers an entire line of Stress-fix including body lotion, concentrate, and soaking salts. The Stress-fix is infused with French lavender, lavandin and clary sage from organic farms, and is clinically proven to relieve feelings of stress. If you are having problems with hair loss or you just want fuller, thicker hair, then Aveda also offers Invati. This treatment system is 97% naturally derived and reduces h air l oss by 33%. At Bella, the staff strives to makes every client feel and important and leave the salon more confident of their beauty. Brenda takes pride into making people look and feel beautiful. She says, “It is the most rewarding part of my job.” B renda w ants to inspire and educate people to integrate wellness and beauty

in their lives. The mission at Aveda is to care for the world we live in, from the products they make to the ways they give back to society. Aveda strives to set an example for environmental leaderships and responsibility, not just in the area of beauty, but around the world. Many visitors to the salon walk in tired from their day and the demands placed on them by

their different roles as women. Once they receive one or many of the royal treatments Bella offers, a refreshing beverage, a new hairstyle, fresh makeup and even a new outfit, they can leave feeling as beautiful as they look. Brenda reminds all women, “Everyone needs to restore a little balance in their lives, especially us women!”

AMANDASKINNER

ou don’t have to be a research scholar to know that exercise and a healthy diet can not only make a woman feel beautiful, but work to transform her body. Amanda Skinner and her husband, Jason, own Loudhouse CrossFit in Lufkin and are very aware of the needs of East Texas women in regards to their overall health. Amanda explains, “The nation, and more specifically East Texas, suffers from an onslaught of preventable diseases that are a direct result of our lifestyle choices: obesity, diabetes, depression, heart disease, a nd the list goes on.”

Y

Amanda hasn’t always been on the cutting edge of fitness. Fifteen years ago, her daughter, Madalyn, was born. She and Jason knew they needed to start taking better care of themselves and model that lifestyle for their children. When Madalyn was in the fourth g rade, Amanda started putting intentional actions to that desire. She taught Physical Education at Harmony Christian School and eventually began

working at Anytime Fitness. Participants are trained for the unknowns of day to day life. Because of varied workouts, crossfitters are able to do whatever is thrown at them, be that running a 5K or simply picking up a sack of dog food safely. T he Skinner’s goal for Loudhouse is to change lives for the better. Not only do they want women to look better, but change internally, as well. T he family atmosphere at Loudhouse keeps everyone accountable to workouts and a healthy diet. Amanda explains, “What

we offer is fitness, but what that looks like QV ZMITQ\a Q[ [W U]KP UWZM# _M IZM NIUQTa I have celebrated with this family and cried with them. We don’t just encourage one another in our workouts, but d ay to day lives, as well.” As women, we have many responsibilities, not only to ourselves, but to our families. We have to be the role model. In order to take care of everyone else, we h ave to put our own body somewhere near the top of the list. Amanda explains, “My goal is to show everyone that n ot o nly i s it important to be fit, but i t’s really a l ot of fun, as well. T he mantra at Loudhouse is faith, family and fitness.” M ost o f the participants associated with this gym understand they would not be as successful in their quest for fitness if it weren’t for their CrossFit family. One participant explains, “Crossfit has changed my life in too many ways to count. I’ve toned up and become stronger and faster.” She continues, “When I began a year ago, I was taking an anti-depressant drug to

treat PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) caused by a very traumatic event that happened just months before beginning Crossfit. About 10 months into Crossfit, I realized I was happier than I’ve ever been and felt better than before, both physically and emotionally. I no longer needed the medication.”

MISSION STATEMENT

BRAZIL

E

ast Texas can take pride in the powerful impact her people continue to bring to needy people both at home, as well as, all over the globe through area church mission groups, local ministries, and service organizations.

This month The Journey Magazine/EAST Magazine highlights a student ministry team from Harmony Hill Baptist Church of Lufkin. On August 2nd through the 11th, the group of eleven students and six adults traveled to Curitiba, Brazil where they partnered with missionary, Bobby Wacaser and a group of young missionaries known as Projecto Vida.

The Lufkin group joined Projecto Vida to perform skits and music presenting the gospel during 19 school assemblies over four days. The students were able to share their personal salvation stories through translators in both large and small group settings. They also spent a day traveling with the missionaries to lower income neighborhoods, providing haircuts, food, and basic healthcare while sharing Christ with the people through "evangesoccer" balls and power bracelets, which share the gospel through the use of colors.

Shawn Mahannah is the student pastor of Harmony Hill Baptist Church and led the team on the nine day NWZMQOV UQ[[QWV \ZQX 0Q[ ÅZ[\ M`XMZQMVKM _Q\P *ZIbQT UQ[[QWV[ _I[ QV ! _PQTM [MZ^QVO I\ I KP]ZKP QV Tampa, Florida. During that trip, he fell in love with the Brazilian people, the missionaries, and their mission purpose. He also recognized the trip as a perfect introduction to foreign missions for students. He says he found it a very safe and well-organized gospel organization that has ministered in Curitiba for over 20 years.

"On the Sunday night we went to a church, I expected to be confused trying to sing in Portuguese, but they started singing in English and I looked around and noticed everyone still worshipped with their whole hearts," she shares. "Now I see foreign missions as an opportunity to go somewhere completely new, away from my distractions and help people by sharing the gospel with them. But I also see it as something that will tremendously change my life, as well."

The experience impacted sixteen year-old Laurel Robinson in life-changing proportions, too. "To know \PI\ [W UIVa ZMKMQ^ML +PZQ[\ IVL _QTT JM _Q\P ][ QV 0MI^MV WVM LIa Q\ _I[ IUIbQVO IVL 1 LMÅVQ\MTa _QTT be going on more mission trips in the future!"

Dylan Sandlin

"The trip provided incredible opportunities for our students to share the gospel one-on-one due to the receptive nature of most Brazilians to Americans", says Mahannah. "Often in America students don't get to experience evangelism, or don't think they can. We think that is the pastor's job. In Brazil people want to know about Jesus, and our students know Jesus. This trip proved to the team members that God's Kingdom is being expanded all around the globe, not just in their little bubble of East Texas." Becky Reeder, mother and adult sponsor, said, "After spending night and day sharing the love of Christ, we had a hard time saying good-bye, but are now more compelled to keep doing the same at home or wherever God may send us."

SOMETHING ABUNDANT

SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER “...to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes...” “No ashes, no beauty.” -- P.E. Sharp study the feasts as very personal “appointed times” (Lev.23:4). September is the anniversary of Mycah’s cancer diagnosis. The month of September marks powerful remembrance and adds up to timely gratitude for healthy year after healthy year. D

What  d oes  the  term  â€œeating  cleanâ€?  mean  to  you? For  me,  it  means  getting  the  best,  freshest,  healthiest  food  you  can  get--hopefully  organically  grown,  certainly  as  free  of  pesticides  and  chemicals  as  possible,  with  lots  of  the  nutrients  our  bodies  need  to  thrive.  The  key  is  to  stay  away  from   packaged  and  processed  foods  as  much  as  possible.  Get  real  food  from  the  edges  of  the  store.  Healthy  food  may  cost  more  (mass  produced  foods  are  artificially  cheap  because  these  foods  IZM []J[QLQbML Ja \PM OW^MZVUMV\# NWWL[ []KP I[ _PMI\ KWZV soy  and  dairy)  but  eating  poorly  cost  more  to  your  health   in  the  long  run.   What  do  you  want  readers  to  understand  regarding  diet  and  its  effects  on  personal  health?   The  old  saying,  â€œYou  are  what  you  eat,â€?  really  is  true.  Your  body  is  â€œstarving  in  a  sea  of  plentyâ€?  when  you  take  in  calories  that  do  not  supply  the  vitamins  and  trace  minerals  your  body  needs  for  the  complex  metabolic  processes.  As  an  example,  Texans  are  extremely  low  in  vitamin  D,  a  hormone  our  bodies  need  for  all  sorts  of  metabolic  things.  That’s  because  we  live  in  boxes,  and  we  raise  our  animals  in  boxes.  Neither  we,  nor  the  animals  we  eat,  get  enough  sun  and  end  up  vitamin  D  deficient.  T here  is  a  lot  of  vitamin  D  in  the  bright  yellow  yolks  of  chickens  raised  at  home,  running  around  in  the  sunshine,  eating  bugs  and  green  grass.  There’s  hardly  any  in  a  storebought,  factory-raised  egg.  Â

Avoid “fad diets” and start by identifying one or two bad eating habits and work on only those first. When we go to extremes we are more likely to give up. WHY I LOVE BEING A MOM

LACEY KEATH ‘Little Mama.’ That was the nickname affectionately given to me by my parents when I was around 4 years old. Beau, my younger brother by two years, was my living and breathing baby doll. I would have him dressed, breakfast made and teeth brushed before my parents even woke up. As we grew older, “little mama” became less a term of endearment and more one of annoyance.
