uly is the month when it REALLY feels like summer time. The late nights have kicked in. The heat index and humidity levels are almost unbelievable. But, then you slowly start to see back to school clothes creeping out. Catalogs start to arrive in your mailbox saying free shipping and an additional 15% off if you order now. I really think there should be a law put in place that does not allow retailers to advertise or promote the words “Back to School” until August! That is just cruel punishment for those who are enjoying their summer! Really, it isn’t that cruel, but I feel like it has taken me a good month to shed the routine and school mode. Now here I sit having to think about uniforms, backpacks, and school shoes---it’s barely July!

J

WELCOME

One of my greatest joys is hearing my kids talk and think out loud. I love to listen and learn how their little minds work. As we were looking at school backpacks and talking about what color we wanted, I was trying to slowly break the news to Brodie that he is a big boy this year and gets to stay all day like Bosten and Brynn. This year we get to buy him a lunch kit because he will eat lunch at school. Then Bosten chimes in and says, “Yes Brodie, you get to be in kindergarten! Kindergarten was my most favorite grade!” To hear my boys love on each other brings this momma so much joy! So, either way, if you were to tell me summer was over

and it was time to start, we are blessed to have kids that love their school and teachers. They would be excited to go and be back with their friends! In the meantime, I hope you are still knee deep in the sand somewhere, lathered up in sunscreen, or buried in a good book, snuggled up in a cozy bed, letting the laundry pile up a little bit and taking a night or two off from

cooking during the week--and school and the dreaded routine is still far from your mind! Here is to a g reat July and making the most of your summer!

ABBYMCCARTY Cheering for Children with Special Needs

A

bby McCarty, a 2012 graduate of Lufkin High School, fell in love with g ymnastics and cheerleading before she could spell “pom poms.” By second grade she was enrolled in both cheer and gymnastic classes at the Academy of Gymnastics and Dance in Lufkin. As an eighth grader, Abby began working at the academy as an instructor to younger children.

Now a student and cheerleader at Stephen F. Austin University majoring in special education, Abby has found a way to combine her love for cheer and g ymnastics with her aspiring goals to make a difference in the lives of children with special needs.

We want the community to help us get the word out to families with children with special needs and tell them there is a place for their children to learn and grow through dance. Recently, Abby joined a friend and fellow SFA cheerleader on a trip back to her hometown of Beaumont. Her friend’s dad owns the Cheer FX gym in Port Arthur. While visiting the gym, Abby had the opportunity to observe a class that Cheer F X offers for children with special needs. ¹1 [I_ \PM RWa WV \PM NIKM[ WN \PM SQL[ _PMV \PMa KIUM WNN \PM ÆWWZ 1 _I[ QV TW^M º [PM [Ia[ Abby came back to the Academy of Gymnastics and Dance and spoke to owner and her mentor, Darlene Atkinson. Darlene recognized a unique opportunity to serve the children and families of the Lufkin community facing the challenges of developmental or physical impairments and agreed to let Abby take the reins in organizing a class. Sign-ups began in mid-June and to date, there are four children enrolled and set to begin classes the week of June 17. However, Abby says, “We welcome as many students as want to come. We want the community to help us get the word out to families with children with special needs and tell them there is a place for their children to learn and grow through dance. INSPIRING WOMAN

CAROLINE

KINGHAM very girl dreams of ball gowns, tiaras crowning beautiful locks of curled hair, rosy cheeks, and just the right touch of shimmer to her lips; the desire to be a princess can be found deep within the heart of any girl, no matter her age. Caroline Kingham is no stranger to this dream. As a small girl being raised in Nacogdoches, she has admired the Heritage Princesses o f the Nacogdoches Heritage Festival.

The Nacogdoches Heritage Festival is an annual event hosted by the 6IKWOLWKPM[ +W]V\a 0Q[\WZQKIT .W]VLI\QWV I VWV XZWÅ\ WZOIVQbI\QWV which raises money to aid and save historical properties. The Nacogdoches Heritage Festival began in 1982 and is the primary fundraising vehicle of the Foundation. The festival, held each June, culminates with the crowning of the Heritage Festival Queen and the Grand Ball. Any young lady in Nacogdoches can apply to be a Heritage Princess. 8ZW[XMK\Q^M XZQVKM[[M[ ÅTT W]\ IV IXXTQKI\QWV IVL I\\MVL IV QVNWZUI\QWV UMM\QVO QV \PM NITT ,]ZQVO \PM ÅZ[\ UWV\P[ WN \PM VM_ aMIZ PMZQ\IOM princesses attend classes each month where they learn everything about being a true Nacogdoches princess. Young ladies are taught to be leaders, and they are trained in proper etiquette, like how to set a table and attend a formal gathering. Candidates are given an in-depth look at the history of Nacogdoches and how the ‘Oldest Town in Texas’ came to be one of the greatest. The Heritage Princesses develop close bonds as they meet often in preparation for the festival. In June of each year, the Heritage Princesses prepare for a week of festivities with the Nacogdoches Heritage Festival. The princesses participate in parties where they are able to model everything they have learned about etiquette and leadership. Throughout the brunch, mixer, meet and greet and Herald Party, the ‘heralds’ are watching. STATE CHAMPIONS

HUDSON LADY HORNETS

he Hudson Lady Hornets softball team has won back-to-back state championship titles. The team successfully defended their position as champions this May with a win at the state tournament in Austin. victories. There was one game in particular this season, a game where we beat Waco Robinson. We scored four runs in the tenth inning to pull it out. It was the game that showed this group of girls that they did believe in themselves, and more importantly, in each other." As teams unify to compete for victories against the opposition, competition among a particular group can be a challenge to learn to handle. Kelsee Selman, the team’s star pitcher, gets a lot of attention. One might assume jealousy on the part of her counterparts is bound to surface. “It is not the case,” says Cassidy Brasuell, a senior member of the Lady Hornet Championship team. “We encouraged Kelsee, and she encouraged us. There was never any jealousy.” Cassidy said that Kelsee was often bothered when people gave her credit for single-handedly leading the team to win.

In a culture of “mean girls” the teamwork and friendships found among the girls of this year’s Lady Hornets softball team could be characterized as a rare and elusive trophy. Sometimes girls, and especially teammates who spend a lot of time together, can drive one another batty. And while the girls may admit there were times of disagreement and even catty tension, they found a way to work One o f C oach E by’s p rimary g oals i s t o teach his team life lessons that will last well together. well b eyond t heir b rief years o f p laying The team’s coach, Jimmy Eby, spoke of softball. Coach Eby was able to teach his team to navigate their emotions by establishing a team motto: “WANT it”. He told the girls they would have a huge target on their backs this season as the defending champions. Everyone who played them wanted to defeat them especially. He told his team to embrace and invite that fact, to face that challenge, and even “WANT it”. That meant the girls PIL \W ÅOP\ IVL VM^MZ OQ^M ]X <PMa PIL \W learn to work together to win in tough circumstances by helping and encouraging one another. There is something innately divine in a group of females working together toward a common goal. A tendency for division, jealousy, back-biting, and gossip is always breathing down a g roup’s n eck. W hen a team like the Lady Hornets learns to throw off everything that hinders while pressing on toward their goal, g reat things are in store. The Lady Hornets are an example for women to WANT it. Their success is proof that when women pull together, set aside the things that don’t matter, and encourage one another’s strengths, everyone wins.

CLEAN I N G DAY Couldn’t rest yet, a second bathroom to clean First put more laundry in the washing machine. I did it again - another sink, a second tub. Why is there toothpaste stuck under the rug?

Tomorrow’s the day I’ll get all that done Today was the day for Facebook and fun! I left all the dishes in the sink for the morn, Oh who am I kidding? This is the norm!

I sorted the toys for the kids to put away I’m sure they’ll get to it - maybe even today. I plugged in the vacuum, and winced at its roar <PMV 1 [UQTML I[ Q\ []KSML ITT \PM LQZ\ WNN Ua ÆWWZ

Once the kids went to bed, I crashed quickly myself, No time to put Legos back on their shelves. Too worn out from thinking, too tired to care I closed my eyes pretending nothing was there.

<PM LZaMZ J]bbML I[ [WWV I[ 1 ÅVQ[PML \PI\ \I[S More clean clothes to fold, more socks to get matched. And then I remembered my family must eat So I stopped right away to prep veggies and meat.

I’d just fallen asleep when my alarm clock rang I jumped out of bed and began with a bang! I started the laundry, ‘cause that takes all day Then picked up the den before the kids woke to play.

7VKM LQVVMZ _I[ [\IZ\ML \PM ÅVQ[P _I[ VMIZ I worked more and sweated more, then heard a strange noise in my ear. 1 [\ZIQVML \W TQ[\MV \PMV Ua PMIZ\ LQL I ÆQX A little voice in the dark said, “Mommy I’m sick.”

Then came the dishes piled high in the sink - Whew! Something in there was starting to stink! But no problem now, I’ve tackled that chore 1 _QXML ITT \PM KW]V\MZ[ VW_ WV \W \PM ÆWWZ

As I tried to focus, to tell what was what, I realized the truth like a kick to the gut. 5a PW][M _I[ [\QTT UM[[a \PM ÆWWZ [\QTT KW^MZML QV LQZ\ I had fallen asleep and now my child’s tummy hurt.

The broom and the dustpan got whisked around next <PM \ZI[P Y]QKSTa ÅTTML _Q\P KZ]UJ[ WN XZM\bMT[ IVL +PM` The kids are still sleeping? It’s every mom’s wish! I got out the mop and the bucket, then Swish!

My Cleaning Day success blown away by my son I was exhausted but proud of all I had done. I’d dreamed a good dream, though none of it true I got up with my child as only a parent could do.

7V \W \PM JI\PZWWU _PQTM 1 TM\ \PM ÆWWZ[ LZa And I got to work with my cleaning supplies. I scrubbed out the sink, got the tub free of mold Then I knelt down to face that ol’ porcelain bowl.

I got him a bucket and some crackers to eat Then I stepped over toys and sat down at his feet. I love my dear child, so I’ll say with great sorrow... Cleaning Day must wait for another tomorrow.

PARENT THOUGHTS

It was Cleaning Day’s eve; my preparations were made Not a thing was picked up, not a cushion was sprayed. I stepped over shoes and tiptoed past dolls, Ignored piles of laundry that cluttered the halls.

hildren.  The  word  instantly  brings  up  feelings  of  love  and  tenderness‌  and  frustration  and  sighs.  I  am  human,  and  I  am  honest,  and  I  can  admit  there  are  those  moments  that  make  me  sigh,  or  even  cry.  However,  most  often,  the  frustrations  come  when  I’m  falling  short‌  when  I’m  tired,  or  distracted,  or  failing  in  patience,  or  forgetting  God’s  advice  for  love  and  discipline.  Thankfully,  most  of  the  time,  I  remember  how  abundantly  blessed  I  am.

One  day,  Lord  willing,  we  will  let  them  out  of  our  house  to  live  on  their  own  with  their  families  and  raise  their  own  children.  I  cannot  imagine  the  pride  and  joy  that  will  be,  to  see  our  babies  raise  sweet  babies.  We  look  forward  to  the  day  W]Z \IJTM[ IVL TQ^QVO ZWWU IVL JMLZWWU[ IZM Ă…TTML _Q\P children,  children-in-law,  and  grandchildren!   This  job  is  an  awesome  responsibility,  one  that  creates  fear  and  stress  in  me.  (I  sure  don’t  wanna  mess  up!)  We’ve  had  our  share  of  stressful  times‌  an  extended  hospital  stay  at  Texas  Children’s’,  surgeries,  broken  bones,  and  not  to  mention  those  daily  decisions  about  everything!  But,  with  the  guidance  and  wisdom  of  my  dear  husband  and  the  guiding  light  of  God’s  word,  I  know  we  can  do  this.  We  can  raise  these  precious  souls  to  love  God,  love  others,  and  enjoy  their  blessing  of  a  life  here,  until  we  enjoy  our  blessed  life  above.  I  thank  God  I  get  to  be  a  mom.
