THE ENTREPRENEUR IN SPORTS BUSINESS, MINING AND AGRICULTURE Gerald Sibanda is a former professional and international rugby player and an entrepreneur from Harare, Zimbabwe. He played for considerable semi professional and professional clubs in several parts of the world, including South Africa (Golden Lions Rugby Club and Western Province Rugby Club) before a spell in Scotland and Romania where he retired in 2017. The former Seven’s World Series player grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, which played a huge role in his life. Sibanda is an entrepreneur with an interest in global investments in sectors of sports, trade and mining. He’s the founder and CEO of Athletes Sphere Management (ASM). ASM was designed to create world-class opportunities for African players. It is an opportunity to unlock chances for the athlete and to unlock values for the stakeholders in different sporting organisations around the world. “Sport is a business and where I come from these things were not communicated in the time when I used to play. I think these were some of the things that we did not comprehend that sport is a business, we had that notion that sport is just a hobby, a parttime thing but in essence, sports is a billion-dollar industry depending on what setup you are in. So for me that was motivation to bring world-class opportunities closer to our community.
The company manages athletes, create commercial projects for associations, institutions and aim to close the gap and connect our African communities with the big sporting brands,” said Sibanda. ASM managed to partner with Spanish La Liga side, Real Betis Balompie. The company manages Real Betis Balompie’s projects; the development of football in Africa; managing their academies in Africa and the priorities on commercial projects to grow the brand. Sibanda stated the partnership between ASM and Real Betis Balompie as a win-win situation. “The objective was clear and it was simple, to lead their projects in Africa and we want to help grow the brand of the club in our market, you know, make them one of the big brands in Africa. We also want to benefit on our side as well, and bring the big scouts into our region and expose our brands and mainly the African players,” he said. MAY/JUNE 2022 | SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS
Among other things, Sibanda runs a mining company and he gave credit to his father for that idea. “I was brought up in a family where my dad was already into chrome mining, gold mining projects and farming too, here in Zimbabwe. This was what I was encircled by as a child. Now I have businesses in different sectors and that was just purely the influence I got. We are running farms, and have livestock and maize crop,” he said. He went on to explain the possibilities of the mining industry in Southern Africa, “Look at the number of international investors
that have flocked to Africa, you go to Dubai International Airport or Ethiopian airports you will see a lot of people coming from different markets, Europe and Asia mainly to our lands. They come for something here, they see fantastic vacancies that maybe some of us are not aware of. I mean we have fantastic sources we living in and concealed us but it’s just about having the right resources to capitalise on these minerals. We have to fight hard to formulate these opportunities for our African entrepreneurs than let overseas investors flock to Southern Africa and the rest of Africa to look for these minerals we are sitting on and abandoning in our regions”.
Sibanda is appreciative that there are mining events taking place in Africa and he made mention of the Mining Indaba 2022 that was held in Cape Town earlier in May. He acknowledged that having these events is fundamental for any entrepreneur to meet different personnel and network. Business is built through building relationships with people. Sibanda says generational wealth is one of the key elements that every entrepreneur strives for. The aim is to build a company that will be an engineer for generations. He acknowledges generational wealth creation starts with honouring those who have lived

before us, just as the present generation wants to be honoured by those who live after them. He touched on the principles he lives by daily and made mention having faith and believing that what is made for him will truly be his. “In business, there are people who may value what you do and accept your proposals and some won’t and that’s how business works. You don’t have to take it personal. You just have to move on and focus on other goals. You have to stay positive all the time and that’s my secret, there are no two ways about that,” he said. “People must stay positive in whatever they want to achieve and believe in their values. Just know there will be critics whether you do good or bad, that’s how life is,” concluded Sibanda. SJ

HOW TO FARM SUSTAINABLY AND INTENSIVELY FOR THE FUTURE
Born and raised in the city of Johannesburg, Mbali Nwoko is the eldest of three children. She spent most of her childhood days in Pimville, Soweto and in Eastrand. From a very young age she has been a competitive and meticulous go-getter. After graduating from the University of Johannesburg with a Bcom Industrial Psychology degree, Nwoko spent a few years in the corporate sector, before finding a recruitment company with a business partner and friend. During the dry years of 2015 and 2016, when South Africa’s unemployment rate peaked above 25%, a majority of their recruitment company’s clients were struggling to employ more people, which in turn, had a challenging effect on their business staying afloat. It was by chance and luck that she ran into a gentleman that had a 360 degree turn in his life, from engineering to agriculture. Their conversation motivated Nwoko to become a farmer. She did her research about the industry, attended seminars and workshops, spoke to farmers and sparked relationships with stakeholders within the industry.
When she had enough knowledge to begin her quest, she took the most important step and she started. In 2016 Nwoko rented out land and planted seeds. From November until May, her company, Green Terrace, harvests green, yellow and red peppers. They supply retailers across South Africa. Their season starts from June until August when they prepare the land. In September they plant the seeds. Six years in and she already owns the land they use to farm. Her passion as a vegetable farmer has landed her numerous gigs as an entrepreneur.
She is a well known columnist for a number of farming publications, including one of the biggest farming magazines in the country. When she is not at Green Terrace, podcasting, writing or speaking, Nwoko oversees 1500 farmers at Ukhanyo Farmer Development (UFD) in the Eastern Cape. Since she began her role as the CEO of the organization at the beginning of the year, she has been at the forefront of developing rural and small farmers; through commercialization, subsidizing and providing mentorship. “In light of everything that I do I am very passionate about the industry and the sector,

IT IS MUCH BIGGER THAN JUST PUTTING A SEED IN THE GROUND. YOU NEED THE RIGHT SEASON, RESEARCH, FINANCIAL CAPITAL, THE RIGHT HUMAN RESOURCE, MARKETING, SALES, LOGISTICS AND CONSISTENCY. MBALI NWOKO CEO AT GREEN TERRACE

and I have seen a need for people wanting to be exposed to agriculture outside of what we read and what we hear,” she says Nwoko says farming is not a hobby for her, it is a business. “It is much bigger than just putting a seed in the ground. You need the right season, research, financial capital, the right human resource, marketing, sales, logistics and consistency. For serious farmers, they should definitely look at farming as a business,” she says. Nwoko believes running a successful business involves every stakeholder in its structure; from the employees, to accountants and clients, so they can all see the bigger picture.
“You have to have a team within a group of individuals who are experts in their own right to give you insight for you to make certain business decisions as a business owner. You sit back, take all of this into consideration, plan and execute,” she says. As a first generation farmer, Nwoko’s success in the industry is a result of a good team, but also learning the hard way. There were seasons when their crops were heavily affected by climate change. She had challenges with frost — crops were completely wiped out in winter. All of this, she says, becomes difficult to run, especially when you do not have financial reserves. Nwoko says that fuel price hikes in South Africa, every second week, are a challenge for agripreneurs trying to maintain their logistics and weekly budgets. "How do you mitigate against price increase and inflation? It’s eating in your profits. Now you have made so many investments — now the cost of doing business is climbing higher and higher — these are the challenges I face and it is not easy when you go at it alone, hence, having a team helps,” she says.

Nwoko shared five tips that can assist agripreneurs to yield profits in farming: 1. Have land Six years ago Nwoko did not have any land. She says, you will be surprised at how many people have access to land. She has been fortunate enough to travel across the Eastern Cape and there is an abundance of land in the area. She encourages new farmers to have a product, have a client, start selling and they are in business. 2. Do some research “What is it that you want to be — a vegetable farmer or a livestock farmer? Do your research on what type of commodity you want to farm. I can tell you for a fact chickens need a little more space than a garage,” she says. 3. Understand the environment “Connect and engage with farmers in and around the place you want to farm. That is very important because you need to know the climate throughout the year,” she says. 4. Attend events “Connect with other stakeholders. Be proactive to going to events, even if they are virtual, attend. Listen. Be an audience. You will meet so many people who are open and willing to help. Quite frankly, Lonwabo, that was my secret to success. For the people who are speaking on the panel, I would approach them after, behind the stage, and ask for their input and help,” she says. 5. Just start “Start by buying that chicken. Start by buying a bag of seeds and just putting it in the ground. Maybe start by buying tomatoes from a farmer next door and packaging it and selling it to a different client. Just start based on what you set yourself to achieve,’ she says. Nwoko has been in entrepreneurship for close to a decade. Some of the reasons she wakes up every morning is for her passion to bring about change and being around people who have the same vision in the industry. “I have businesses. I am accountable to a lot of people and I have a farm to run. So for me, what gets me up in the morning is because I am accountable to a lot of people who depend on me, who are also passionate in their own right to be a part of Ukhanyo Farmer Development or
Green Terrace. Just having them speak about where they see themselves and the vision they have for the company motivates me to be around people who are passionate as well,” she says. Being a business owner may have its ups and downs, but one of the best parts about it, for Nwoko, is the fact that she gets to control her time and freedom. “You can wake up in the morning and think, okay this is covered so I can rest. When I find these quiet times, I get more creative, get energy and have more time with family,” she says. Nwoko adores family values, she says growing up, she has always had a huge family. When she quit her job, however, her parents were quite anxious, especially since they believe in getting a salary from job security. “What I am fortunate and grateful for is to have parents that supported me. When I failed my mom had taken out loans on my behalf just to help my business. I have paid her back every cent now,” she says. As an African leader, Nwoko believes, keeping the wealth within the family is important in growing the continent. It begins by maintaining family values, teaching those around her about the business and introducing them into the industry. The award-winning agripreneur encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to take up life as it comes, in cycles, seasons, learnings and lessons. SJ MAY/JUNE 2022 | SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS

In the Western Cape of South Africa, Khayelitsha is considered to be one of the fastest-growing townships, economically. Arguably, this has, over the years, been a result of its influx of investments in the business and entertainment sectors. The township is well known for producing some of the finest artists, sportsters, business owners and chill-out areas in Cape Town. During the peak of the national lockdown, as a result of the Covid19 Pandemic, a majority of the entertainment spots in the area overdid a restructuring. Places such as Rands, The Milk Restaurant Bar and KwaAce Lounge saw the lockdown as a period to revamp. In that process, The Spade Boutique Hotel & Spa was born, in the heart of Khayelitsha, at the end of 2021. The project is the brain child of Annette Skaap and her husband and silent partner, Bulelani 'Ace' Skaap. Together they have over 20 years of experience as entrepreneurs. The Spade is a part of their multiple business ventures in the township — Ace Lounge, which is one of the biggest premium night club's in the neighborhood that gamers visit from international tourists, followed by Ace eParkin which is an outdoor chilling spot set against the backdrop of a carwash and the delectable Ace kitchen which offers a variety of scrumptious African cuisine and other miscellaneous offerings. Anette Skaap grew up in Langa, one of the first black townships in Cape Town. She is a former flight attendant with over seven years of experience traveling the world. Her inspiration behind The Spade was driven by her passion to introduce a luxury brand in Khayelitsha, while growing the family’s portfolio and generational wealth. "I’m a multifaceted woman. I am a content creator with quite a following on Instagram. I was a flight attendant for 10 years. My business venture started seven years ago. I saw a gap in the market. I saw an influx of people flocking into Khayelitsha and I thought why not take the opportunity to develop rental flats for a safe and secure accommodation. So that is where my business venture started. When I was a flight attendant I was exposed to places like Singapore, Dubai and Bali, so I thought I should bring that experience to my people in Khayelitsha and put them on the map.
"I SAT DOWN AND I THOUGHT... LET ME PUT KHAYELITSHA ON THE MAP AND ALSO LET ME CHANGE THE NARRATIVE THAT NOTHING GOOD CAN COME OUT OF THE TOWNSHIP AND THAT TOWNSHIP PEOPLE DON'T DESERVE LUXURY.

"It was not easy getting four stars. But I mean, we were trying to change the narrative of how people perceive luxury in the location and we wanted to prove it to the people that it is possible and it can be done," she says. Skaap says her husband is her pillar. Since he has been in business for over 15 years, he mentors and assists her where he can in business.
“In our family we have another business, KwaAce. So we were trying to preserve the brand so they all go together, that is where The Spade cameabout," she says.

“At some point in my early life, I knew I was creative but there are some challenges when you are a black child and you think of what our parents were exposed to, imagine telling your parents you want your job to be entertaining people, no ways, that is a no. Look, I believe I’m quite intellectually inclined, so I did well at school without putting much effort, I could have done better in hindsight if I would have put just a bit of effort. As a result, at home, they’ve always seen me as an accountant because I was good with numbers,” she says. To some extent, her friends said she would become a lawyer or work in the legal space. “I was very talkative and I’ve never been able to stand for injustice. So a lot of times I got into trouble because of things that had nothing to do with me but I just did not want to see injustice happen to somebody else. fast forward when the time came, I chose to enrol in architecture.," she says.
Khanya Sosibo is a multi-cultured, fearless and persistent leader. Of course, in the world she operates in, it gets easier to get sucked in the negatives, so her attitude and perspective of life continues to help her to stay above her game. Born and bred in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Sosibo is of Swati descendant, with Zulu and Xhosa social and cultural influence. She was raised by her grandparents and mother. She attended her pre-school, primary and high school in KwaZulu Natal. By the age of 17 Sosibo attended Wits University where she studied architecture but cut her course short and went on to enrol for a double major in marketing and business management with a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) at the University of KZN where she graduated in 2009.

A PASSIONATE RADIO PERSONALITY CHANGED HER LIFE THROUGH THE POWER OF PERSISTENCY
"I then enrolled for architecture and I did it for couple of years but it was just not what I expected, I loved it because it was creative but the was a lot that was required in that space and I think at a mental level I wasn’t as prepared and was struggling and these are the things that I am coming to understand now. My grandmother passed away in 2005 which I decided to go back home, I wanted to continue doing architecture but I couldn’t so I eventually did a Bcom and graduated,” she says. Sosibo moved to Cape Town and worked for corporate sector. As much as she was working for a massive corporate company, her passion for entertainment and being in the creative space outweighed her fondness for the corporate space. “While I was working in corporate in Cape Town, I pursued radio by going at UCT Radio and I said to them that school is closed and I am sure that your radio personalities go home but the radio station is a community station it needs to go on, I would like to volunteer my time to come through and do some shows. Fortunately, they allowed me even though I wasn’t a student. I feel that’s where I cemented and believed that this is where I am supposed to be. I would work Monday - Friday in corporate then at weekends I would be at the station and I did that for about three to four years,” she says.

WITH EVERY NEW OPPORTUNITY, THERE ARE CHALLENGING MOMENTS THAT COME WITH IT. In 2015 she resigned from the corporate sector and concentrated on broadcasting. Becoming a brand demanded Sosibo's full attention, resilience and persistence. She was determined to succeed. She searched for opportunities and landed one at a retail radio station. “I would go to the front reception and ask to speak to the person who was the station manager and I struggled to get a hold of them, they were always busy. "I went there a couple of times, I would call and get told his in a meeting etc. One day I called and this was probably my eighth attempt and finally, this time around, I got a hold of him. He was like 'wow I like your sound' and he wanted to meet up with me in person,” she says. “God being good, by August I started doing stand-ins at the retail station and the rest is history.
"I was working with them for five years at some point other opportunities started to come forth and I started doing MC work and corporate work at the casino in Cape Town”. Sosibo acknowledged her life as continuously progressing to a point where her brand has landed her the opportunity to be a newsreader at a commercial radio station. Sosibo says with every new opportunity, there are challenging moments that come with it. She admits it was a different territory to transition into, given she only saw herself as a presenter until this point. “Being a newsreader is a difficult thing to do. I have to admire news readers because they are doing a great job in handling it,” she says. Sosibo encountered unpleasant remarks and things that people had issues with when it came to pronunciation or sometimes phrasing of sentences.
She went on to highlight the physical and mental strain of handling three jobs. The experienced radio broadcaster has, on occasions, landed MC and voice-over work in her portfolio over the years. She is also an actress and plays the role of Thandiswa Moyaki in the South African soapie, Generations. She is the co-founder of Bantu Hikers, an organisation that provides a platform to promote wellness, networking, culture and education through mentorship of firstgeneration students. Sosibo is the director and chair of Ikasi Creatives, a media NPC aimed at presenting skills, training and development programmes in rural communities for the film and media industry. Their programmes are accredited and designed to develop a selected group of youth to become job-ready or become entrepreneurs in the digital media space.

"GENERATIONAL WEALTH NEEDS TO START FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF DIGNITY, SELFWORTH AND SELF-UNDERSTANDING.
The versatile Sosibo is passionate about the work that is being done in the communities. She went on the highlight the fact that Cape Town tv has featured some of the content that IkasiCreatives have produced which gives the youth exposure. She would like to see international and national production houses start creating opportunities for the youth. Generational wealth and wealth creation are very pivotal for any founder or entrepreneur. It cements a living legacy for future eras and empowers everyone to engineer a better tomorrow and job creations. The radio personality believes generational wealth needs to start from the perspective of dignity, self-worth and selfunderstanding. She stated that it should start in the mind and being authentically who you are and that will manifest in the physical form.
She would love to be remembered for igniting people’s passions. To remember the feeling she gave them of fighting for their dreams because their dreams are worth it, they are worth it and their lives are worth it. “I encourage people to find a connection with a higher spiritual state of being. I can’t dictate to you that it should be God or what but I think need to find something that’s beyond you and connect with that. Once you tapped into that and for me as a Christian I would say pray but prayer does not go alone, you need to pray while putting action. Be okay with being alone, be okay with people not understanding what you are trying to do. Lastly don’t seek outside validation. Be okay with walking your journey and being authentically you,” she concluded. SJ

Green mining is the industry’s new frontier, and there are significant financial pressures driving the change apart from climate change, mining industry speakers and conference delegates said at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town, writes Edward West from IOL Business. “We also welcomed three Heads of State and one Prime Minister: the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Masisi and the newly elected President of the Republic of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema, and the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, who all shared their visions for the future directly to the Mining Indaba community,” organisers said in a statement on Thursday.
Zambia’s president Hakainde Hichelema said that mining could play a catalytic role in promoting industrialisation and job creation, further adding that the country is ready to engage partners who support their efforts to re-establish Zambia as a world class mining destination. Zambia’s Hichilema announced a “new dawn” that would aim to push copper production to 3 million tons per year from around 800 000 tons last year, that there would be no “mining nationalism”, and that the moratorium on the granting of new mining licences would be lifted soon. South Africa’s mining sector was recently ranked as one of the 10 worst mining investment countries in the world, according to the 2021 Fraser Institute Investment Attractiveness Index. South Africa fell to 75th place out of 84 countries (down from 40 in 2019) and was ranked 12th out of 15 countries in Africa. Speaking on the second day of the event on Tuesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said,
across the world, almost every industry had to adapt to new circumstances and confront new challenges and be prepared to seize new opportunities, adding that the mining industry in Africa is no different. “Like many other parts of our continent, our country is abundantly blessed with vast mineral deposits that form the basis of the most important applications used in society and economies today. Mining companies see the potential in South Africa. At the fourth South Africa Investment Conference earlier this year, investments valued at around R46.5 billion were pledged towards mining and mineral beneficiation. Mining Indaba is a platform for engagement and collaboration between all stakeholders in the industry. The 2023 edition of the event will take place between 6 – 9 February 2023. IOL

HOW TO MANAGE ARTISTS WHILE RUNNING A PUBLIC RELATIONS COMPANY Rebecca Tlabago is on a quest to build her brand into an empire By Likho Mpama
MAY/JUNE 2022 | SUCCESSFUL JOURNALS
"I DID NOT GET THE SUPPORT THAT I NEEDED FROM OUTSIDE. THAT WAS THE PART THAT GROOMED ME TO BE A LEADER. Rebecca Tlabago was born and raised in Johannesburg, Berea. She’s the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Lucrative Communications, a Public Relations and Marketing company that specializes in public relations, campaign management, marketing, and advertising amongst other things. Her entrepreneurial journey essentially started in university when she did her public relations course. “When I started public relations as a course, I didn’t quite love it, I didn’t see myself going forward with it, so I had to find something that I could gel with and I didn’t even know I would start my own agency and company. I was just choosing a career at first, to be honest. "The more I did it, I just found myself falling in love with it. I started going out and got my own experience, I started managing artists’ social media accounts, creating PR for my personal brand and getting featured on blogs. So that’s when I knew this is where I belong," she says.
She states that it was a difficult road for her because she never had any background in entrepreneurship. She went on to say that she dealt with a lot of misunderstandings from her close family and friends. “I did not get the support that I needed from outside, but I think that was the part that groomed me to be the leader I am because I had to learn to value my skillset, value my goals you know and put myself first. I had to go with that because one thing I’ve realized is that a lot of people don’t know what they like for themselves, so for you to put more baggage on them to like what you do is a lot. I detached myself from seeking support from my close family and friends, I took all that from within and look, we are here today,” she says. But it does not get any easier in the industry, better yet, the young entrepreneur becomes stronger and builds fonder relationships. “Till present, it’s still difficult for people to understand what I’m doing. I noticed and realised they grew up in an era where they had to get a job to level up after school, so obviously they wouldn’t comprehend my perspective. It’s not something they’ve been exposed to, they’ve never worn my shoes, per say, so I’ve just learnt to live with it. I feel like I a lone wolf, I think I would define myself like that. I am the one that knows the goal and vision for my company. I believe I am on the right path to building an empire, time will tell, eventually,“ she says. The Lucrative Communications chief executive officer has a huge skill set and has fabricated a reputation for herself in the industry so far. She has done events, planning, management and taken a few projects along her journey. She aims to continue building her company on an international relations scale and manage politicians and bigger public figures.

IN THIS INDUSTRY, YOU'VE GOT TO BE BOLD, BRAVE AND FEARLESS
“I feel like, as an entrepreneur, I am limitless to where I can take the company. I want to manage large businesses, I would like to establish my services in an executive PR capability. “ If South Africa has its brand, like a home-based brand that’s invested into public relations service or services, we would probably have a good chance of winning our communities to support local brands. The products would be marketed often and would be amazing for local businesses and our ecosystem. I want my company to bridge that gap and help local brands,” she says. Running a company tends to have its challenges. There are a multitude of impediments that entrepreneurs face and have to overcome on a daily. Tlabago states, she endured eternities where her services have been taken advantage of and she had to overcome a financial crisis. “I guess these challenges come with the job and I learnt that the hard way but with time I’ve learnt. I’ve even had a virtual event with Rosebank College where I’ve shared about The Importance of Financial Aid and The Importance of Social Media Presence. So we take these challenges and better ourselves,” she says. Rebecca Tlabago expressed that there is so much to look out for in 2022. She has created the most exciting campaign. People will be looking forward to it. When it comes to generational wealth creation, Tlabago believes, wealth creation is an important tool for a better tomorrow and it needs everyone to participate.

“This is what I want for myself. When I started Lucrative Communications I envisioned it to be a company that is going to live for decades and decades. I want it to reach a point where It runs itself and creates wealth for my family," she says. Tlabago says, every time things get difficult, people must remember why they started in the first place. Lucrative Communications manages musicians and artists from across Gauteng. A majority of the qualities her clients poses make Tlabago's job easy in terms of marketing and advertising for gigs.
Her ability to network and share her clients powerful story is a tip of the cake. Through the use of public relations, advertising and social media, Tlabago bridges the gap of getting her clients’ music and the listeners into one room, venue or device. A majority of her artists are in the HipHop, Amapiano and Gqom genres. Lucrative Communications’ management for artists includes managing their social media, writing press releases, public relations, photography and music video sessions.
