Warm sunshine. Ice cream. Lazy days splashing around the pool. After a soul-crushing winter and a spring that felt like a second round of winter, parents and children alike are ready for summer to arrive. But what happens when kids who’ve been in separate classrooms all year long are suddenly together for several hours every day?

My children are 20 months apart in age, and their bickering reaches an alarming intensity once summer hits. Sometime during the month of May, as I watch the remaining school days dwindle on the calendar, my stress level rises exponentially, and I start loading up my Amazon cart with chocolate and earplugs.

But maybe this summer will be different, I always tell myself. I’ll plan ahead. My kids will be so busy they won’t have time to fight. I’ll regale them with enriching activities. I’ll

perfect my arsenal of slime recipes, choreograph regular play dates, and thrill the neighborhood kids with my expertise in creating backyard water blobs.

Realistically, I know I’ll do none of this. So I’ve scaled back my expectations. Be low are some strategies that I’m hop ing will help me preserve my remaining sanity from June until September.

Let each child create a personal “calm down” space at home. When tensions are high, having a designated special area for each child allows for personal space and provides a fun alternative to the tired refrain: “Go to your room.” In our house, my oldest daughter commandeered a comfortable chair in the living room and stocked it with a few books, stuffed animals, a blanket, and a water bottle.

Consider separate eating areas during particularly challenging times. While it’s important for families to share meals together whenever possible, sometimes less is more. If the mere act of making eye contact with each other across the breakfast table sparks an argument between your kids, consider allowing them to dine in separate rooms just for that meal. I’ve observed that once my kids are more awake and appropriately fueled with food, they’re less likely to push each other’s buttons – and mine.

Plan special dates with each child on a regular basis. Even a brief amount of 1:1 time together – away from siblings and the temptation to compete – can be like hitting the reset button on a child’s behavior. These occasions need not be lengthy and can be incorporated into the family schedule. Examples include playing a card or board game after dinner, or shopping together for favorite meal ingredients.

Set mini goals.

Let’s face it: there is no universe in which siblings can refrain from bickering 100% of the time. It’s just hardwired into their DNA. Instead of aiming for perfection, set mini goals for behavior throughout the day, and reward success. For example, if my kids can peacefully stay on task in the morning, they get to choose a show to watch together after everyone is ready.

Retire your role as the referee. Too often, I inject myself into my children’s squabbles when the best course of action was to simply refrain from getting involved. Decide which situations in which you’ll intervene – for example, if the argument becomes physical or if there is extremely hurtful name-calling – and let your kids know these guidelines.

Remind yourself that sibling disagreements are normal and can help kids practice conflict resolution skills. When the inevitable bickering arises, brew yourself a cup of coffee or tea and calmly inform your kids that, unless it’s a true emergency, you’re unavailable to hear their grievances until such-and-such time. If you have to, leave the room in order to get your point across.

Fischer Farm Fun

Among the oldest remaining homesteads in DuPage County, Fischer Farm was estab lished in 1836, and the property is home to three pre-Civil War structures. Through the years, the family-built barns and then a large farm house in 1919. The grounds, open daily dawn-dusk, are home to summer camps, Little Lambs, campfires and campouts and special events. Target Focused Putting

Many golfers get to wrapped up in mechanics and other swing thoughts early in the season –especially when it comes to putting. Even experienced golfers can develop a tendency to stare at the ball too long during address. Don’t forget, golf is a “ball to target” sport. Fixating on the ball and forgetting about the target causes you to become brain-locked and prevents you from hitting a great putt. A drill to help improve your target

focus is to practice putting without looking at the ball. Pick out a spot in front of your ball on your target line, focus your eyes on that spot, and roll your ball over that spot. Or, take a flat ball marker and place it on your line and roll the putt with your eyes focused on the ball marker. Practicing this drill will get you thinking about the target line instead of the stroke mechanics!

Golf Tip: Hitting Into the Wind

Like many aspects of golf, there are multiple ways to approach hitting shots into the wind. One is to flight the ball on a piercing trajectory that cuts through the breeze nicely. Another, perhaps easier method to hitting solid wind-beaters, is pulling a longer club and swinging easy.

Because, when many golfers are faced with shots into the wind, their first instinct is often to hit the same club as they normally would and swing as hard as possible. However, that can add unwanted spin to the ball and more directional variability, meaning it immediately balloons up in the air and lands short and likely offline.

So, by taking one or two more clubs (a 5 or 6 iron, instead of a 7), moving the ball slightly farther back in your stance at address (the width of a ball or two) and maintaining a smooth swing instead of going all out, both

spin and launch will remain low and the shot will be less affected by the wind.

The simple point? Instead of swinging for the fences when it’s windy out, force yourself to pull a longer club and swing less than full to keep the ball below the breeze!

Here are some simple tips to help with taking the party shots with a camera that last.

1. Break the camera out early. Depending on

the type of party you may need to take pictures of the decorations, food, the cake, etc. before any people show up.

2. Get the group. Typically, people don’t stay in a large group at parties; they are all spread out in smaller groups. While having everyone in the same room at the same time, get that group shot so you can treasure it afterwards.

3. Capture the emotion. Keep your camera handy and turned on so you’ll be ready for those spontaneous expressions.

4. Be Candid. You can get some great shots of your family and friends when they don’t even know they are getting their picture taken. This is great for capturing emotion at the party

5. Don’t be afraid to zoom in or out. Don’t be afraid of zooming in so your subject fits into your camera frame. This way you can capture the expression of the subject. Also make sure you get pictures of the party as a whole, don’t be afraid to zoom out to capture the entire room.

6. Avoid Red Eye. One of the most common occurrences when taking pictures of people at parties is red eye. To make sure your friends and family don’t look evil eyed have them look just over your shoulder rather than directly at camera. This should help reduce the chances of red eye in your pictures therefore saving you time having to take it out before printing them.

7. Try different perspectives. Don’t be afraid to try different perspectives throughout the party: get at eye level with the kids to get their perspective of the party or take pictures standing on a chair or staircase to get a shot of everyone at the party.

Wind the evening down gracefully About 30 minutes before you’d like the party to end, let everyone know that you’re so glad that they came. If there are still a few lingerers who don’t take the hint, don’t be afraid to be more direct.

Whoever coined the term, “the lazy days of summer” must not have had young children! Certainly, it’s great not to have the pressures of the school year, but many working parents still need childcare when school is out. Summer day camps not only fill this gap, but can provide an enriching atmosphere where children can thrive and grow during the summer months.

Social growth

Children attending day camp have the chance to socialize in a way that is not always possible at school. Whether engaged in team building in sports or problem-solving puzzles, children are encouraged to interact with each other. This is likely to be a very different experience than being at school where individual accomplishments are often the focus.

interest in trains, “They weren’t the same age; they didn’t go to the same school; they didn’t have the same upbringing; but they had something in common that connected them. From a clinical standpoint, finding somebody that you have a connection with is greatly important to the development of our children.”

New skills and learning

The variety in day camps is really incredible. Some day camps offer a range of activities each day. Other camps may focus on learning specific skills like science or magic tricks, arts and crafts or sports. Children can often switch activities week by week, giving them exposure to many different experiences. The learning and growing doesn’t stop there. Says Renfrow of her art themed day camps, “We do a lot of taking moments for students to show off their artwork and allow others to give them constructive and positive feedback.” In this way the children learn not only the artistic concepts being taught but also how to give and receive feedback.

Exercise

Many day camps offer activities to help combat our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Choosing a gymnastics, dance, soccer, or other sport

related day camp will obviously get your child moving. But even day camps focused on arts and crafts or theater may offer daily swimming or time outdoors.

Time unplugged

Screens are becoming more and more integrated into our lives both in and out of school. But there are good reasons to limit children’s screen times. Day camps can vary in their use of electronics from those that don’t allow them at all, to those that rely on them for various activities. If you want your child’s eyes to have a break from screens, find out the day camp’s policies on screen time in advance.

Building confidence

Day camp can be a place to increase confidence as children are exposed to activities they may not have experienced during the school year. Many camps offer the opportunity to build skills in sports or in the arts. This can be especially beneficial to a child who struggles at school, giving them a chance to excel and explore talents that might be less obvious during the school year. Renfrow has watched children blossom before her eyes. “I cannot tell you the excitement and relief they feel when they finally ‘get it’ and then they just flourish from there!” she says of her campers who have begun to master knitting and crocheting.

Flexibility

While school has the same rules all year long, day camp is more flexible. Your child might go to theater camp one week but baseball camp the next. Each will have its own routines and expectations. This can help encourage your child to stay flexible in their expectations. Children who need more time to adjust to new experiences may benefit from multiple weeks at the same camp. Many summer day camps operate on a week-by-week basis, so that if your child is not enjoying the experience, he or she can opt out when the week is over.

Positive Role Models

Day camps may employ teens or college aged youth for their first summer jobs. This can expose children to a new dynamic they may not have encountered, especially if they do not have older siblings. Renfrow believes having people of all ages is essential to running a great day camp. Even middle schoolers are included in her camps as well supervised counselors-in-training. According to Renfrow, this relationship can be every bit as good for the young employees as it is for the campers.

All in all, quality day camps offer an incredible chance for children to learn and grow all while having fun and getting a much-needed break from the rigors of school. They can explore their interests in a healthy environment, and make new friends and fond memories while they’re at it!

Get Better Sleep and Improve Heart Health

There’s more to maintaining a healthy heart than just eating right and exercising regularly. While these practices play an important role in both cardiovascular and overall health and well-being, getting a good night’s sleep is also key.

“Getting a good night’s sleep every night is vital to cardiovascular health,” said Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, M.D., Sc.M., FAHA, past volunteer president of the American Heart Association and chair of the department of preventive medicine, the Eileen M. Foell Professor of Heart Research and professor of preventive medicine, medicine and pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “Adults should aim for an average of 7-9 hours, and babies and kids need more depending on their age.”

However, more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States are not getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to increasing risk for cardiovascular conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack and stroke, lack of sleep may also put people at risk of depression, cognitive decline, diabetes and obesity.

While high blood pressure – a known risk factor of cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 cause of death worldwide – can run in families, it is more common in non-Hispanic Black adults (56%) than in non-Hispanic white adults

(48%), non-Hispanic Asian adults (46%) or Hispanic adults (39%). Healthy lifestyle behaviors, including sleep, can help prevent the condition.

“We know that people who get adequate sleep manage other health factors better as well, such as weight, blood sugar and blood pressure,” Lloyd-Jones said. “The American Heart Association added sleep to the list of factors that support optimal cardiovascular health. We call these Life’s Essential 8, and they include: eating a healthy diet, not smoking or vaping, being physically active and getting adequate sleep along with controlling your blood pressure and maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol and lipids, healthy blood sugar levels and a healthy weight.”

What’s more, falling asleep at different times or sleeping an inconsistent number of hours each night, even variations of more than two hours a night within the same week, may also increase the risk of atherosclerosis, which is a cardiovascular condition where plaque builds up in the arteries, in those age 45 and older, according to research published in the “Journal of the American Heart Association.”

“Maintaining regular sleep schedules and decreasing variability in sleep is an easily adjustable lifestyle behavior that can not only help improve sleep, but also help reduce cardiovascular risk for aging adults,” said study lead author Kelsie Full, Ph.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor of medicine in the division of epidemiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Observe Current Sleep Habits

Keeping a sleep diary to help track your sleep patterns and habits can make it easier to identify factors that may be helping – or hurting –your sleep quality. Monitor what time you go to bed, what time you wake up in the morning, how many times you woke up during the night, how you felt when you woke up and any variables, such as changes to your routine or sleeping arrangements. Having documentation over the course of several weeks can help you identify necessary changes.

Avoid Food and Beverage Close to Bedtime

It can be more difficult to fall asleep if you’re still digesting dinner. To help reduce sleep disruptions caused by food, avoid late dinners and minimize fatty and spicy foods. Similarly, keep an eye on caffeine intake and avoid it later in the day when it can be a barrier to falling asleep.

Exercise Regularly

Physical activity during the day can have a noticeable impact on overall health and wellness but can also make it easier to sleep at night as it can initiate changes in energy use and body temperature. However, exercising too close to bedtime may hinder your body’s ability to settle; aim to have your workout complete at least four hours before you plan to head to bed.

Establish a Bedtime Routine

Getting a good night’s rest often requires getting into a routine. Start by setting an alarm to

indicate it’s time to start winding down. Rather than heading straight to bed, take time to create a to-do list for the following day and knock out a few small chores. Then consider implementing a calming activity like meditating, journaling or reading (not on a tablet or smartphone) before drifting off to sleep. Also set an alarm to wake each morning, even on weekends, and avoid hitting the snooze button to keep your biological rhythms synced.

Create a Comfortable Sleep Space

The ideal space for sleeping is dark, quiet and a comfortable temperature, typically around 65 F depending on the individual. Use room-darkening curtains or a sleep mask to block light and ear plugs, a fan or a white noise machine to help drown out distracting noises. Remember, using your bed only for sleep and sex can help establish a strong mental association between your bed and sleep.

Avoid Tech Before Bed

The bright light of televisions, computers and smartphones can mess with your Circadian rhythm and keep you alert when you should be winding down. Try logging off electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime and use the “do not disturb” function to avoid waking up to your phone throughout the night. Better yet, charge devices away from your bed or in another room entirely.

1. Check out TikTok – There are thousands of weight loss and exercise videos posted on TikTok every day. You will find every type of exercise including morning yoga stretches, daily exercise routines, strength training, marathon preparation and so much more.

2. Tune into YouTube – Discover thousands of cardio, fat burning, dance, yoga, and general fitness videos.With YouTube available on so many devices, there is no excuse for not finding a time and place to exercise. Head to the park, close your office door or workout in the privacy of your own home.

3. Window shop at the mall – That’s right! Lace up your shoes and head to the mall for some free indoor exercise. Walking at 3 mph can burn over 200 calories per hour. Download the Map My Run app and set your activity to walk. This free app will track your pace, time, distance and calorie burn. If you have stairs in your house, turn on some music and start climbing. Want to get outside? Try the bleachers at the local high school.

5. Jump rope – Every garage has an old jump rope or tie down rope. Get out in the sun and start jumping. This is an easy activity to involve your older kids. Try making it a competition – the one who jumps the least times has to do the dishes.

6. Go old school – Remember middle school gym class? Put on a t-shirt and shorts and start with the basics. Try jumping jacks, pushups, sit ups, squats and lunges. Structured workout suggestions can be found on Pinterest or by Googling “calisthenics routines”.

7. Dance – Invite your friends to come over and crank up the tunes for a kitchen

dance party. If your kids have a game console, ask them to play Just Dance with you. Don’t have the game? Borrow it from a friend!

8. Get outside and run – You see joggers everywhere – on trails, city streets or in local parks. For motivation, sign up to do a local 5K with your friend or spouse.

9. Use what you have – Make your own weights by filling empty water bottles and milk jugs with water or sand. Place on a scale and mark the weight on the bottle. Look online for exercise routines that use kitchen chairs, walls or stairs.

10. Do some spring cleaning – Now is the perfect time to clean out the attic, crawlspace or basement. Lifting boxes, moving furniture and heavy cleaning can burn up 400 calories per hour.

11. Play sports at the local park – Pull out the soccer ball, tennis rackets or basketball for a quick pick up game with family or friends. For added exercise, bike or walk to the park.

12. Hike at the State Park – State parks have free admission and are open year-round. Stop in the information center for a trail map and enjoy the outdoors while hiking through nature. Many parks allow dogs on their leashes so bring your four-legged friend for some exercise, too.

Sign up for an endurance race. Take on a new challenge, support a good cause or run/walk/roll for the health of it. Be certain to select an event within your range of conditioning and consult a physician before beginning any exercise program.

It happens the same way every year. You would think I would be ready for it, expecting the onslaught of papers coming home, projects due, last-minute field trips, and end-of-the-year concerts, parties, and assemblies. One would think.

Instead, I find myself scrambling. By mid-May I’m wound tight, running from place to place unsure we can fit it all in and survive. Jen Hatmaker nails it perfectly in her post, Worst End

To be proactive I’m doing something about it. I don’t want the rest of the year to feel like a vortex sucking us all down. Not this year. No ma’am. This year I’ve got a game plan. Here are 10 things to do today to get ready for the end of the school year.

1. Get rid of as many papers as you can. You know the deluge is coming. The art projects, the worksheets, the reports with stickers on the front. Clear out what you have now so you will be ready. And this does not mean just moving it to a new pile or basket. Be

ruthless and get rid of anything you don’t need. File away the things you need. Do we even file anymore? Well, you get the idea. Purge the papers.

2. Create a space. In the last weeks of school, the kids will be coming home with full backpacks ready to empty on the kitchen table five minutes before dinner. Not this year. Get a basket with their name. Better yet, a box. You can even let them decorate it to get excited about everything they will bring home. Give the box a home and tell them all end-of-the-year stuff goes right in their special box. Set aside a time you can go through it together, preferably not while stirring spa-

ghetti sauce and setting the table, so you can give all the appropriate ooohs and aaahs.

3. Gear up. Now, hear me out on this. I know the end of the year feels like the last time you would want to stock up on school supplies. But trust me on this. Make sure you have some glue sticks and markers that still work. Have a few sheets of poster board around or some colored paper. Those lastminute end-of-the-year projects will be a lot less stressful if you can avoid a 9 pm Walmart run. Just think of it as getting craft supplies for the “I’m bored” days of summer.

4. Clear the calendar. Here’s your chance to get ready. This is not the time of the year to add in extra, unnecessary events.That calendar is going to fill up fast and without warning. It’s not the best time to have a stressful dinner party or extra appointments. Clear what you can to make room for what’s coming.

5. Track it. Now that the calendar is cleared, track the incoming dates like it’s your job. Find out when the band concert or the end-of-theyear songfest is going to be. Notice hasn’t come home? Check with the teacher or school secretary. They’re usually in the know. If a notice comes home or an email comes through with a class sharing or end-of-the-year hoopla, get it

on the calendar right then. Maybe even on two calendars. As much as I like the calendar on my phone, I can’t give up my amazing wall calendar.You can even set reminders on your phone now. These dates are important and out of the usual routine. Be ready. Knowledge is power.

6. Wash backpacks and lunchboxes. By this point in the year, they’re pretty gross. Do yourself and your kids a favor and wash them now.This is also a great way to make sure they will make it until the very last day. Also, tell the kids to check lost and found for water bottles, sweatshirts, and anything they may have lost track of.

7. Get shopping. Teacher gifts are handled differently everywhere. Find out how things are done and get shopping.What you will purchase isn’t much different now than it will be in a few months. This is an easy thing to check off your end-of-the-year list. Get what you need. Wrap it up and put it in a designated place. Also, set up a phone or email reminder a week before the last day so you know where you put everything.You’ll be so glad you did.

8. Invite the Grands. With graduations, Mother’s Day tea, and end-of-the-year assemblies make sure you pass along important dates to the Grandparents or other special people who would want to come to celebrate. Giving

them the heads up early will ensure you don’t forget to invite someone special.

9. Food stock up. The last few weeks get crazy, but we all still need to eat. Make a double batch of whatever you’re cooking and put one in the freezer for an easy meal when the days are packed. Stocking up on packaged snacks and quick meals helps too. When you run home from work and school pick up to sports and have to go back out for a science fair you’ll be glad you have dinner prepped. Stocking up is also a big help for packing lunches during the last weeks of school when the cabinets usually look pretty bare.

10. Pick one thing. As a family, pick one thing you will look forward to doing when school gets out. It can be a day at the pool together or ice cream for breakfast. Have something relaxing you can look forward to doing together after all the craziness has passed.You will all be glad to have that special something to look forward to!

And a final word of encouragement for you fellow parents: You will all make it through this. No matter what the end of the year looks like, no matter how much chaos or calm you find, you will all make it through for another year.

Screen Time Rules for the Summer

Many households observe strict rules about screen time during the school year, when the immediate concerns of getting homework done, meeting project deadlines, participation in sports and other extracurricular activities homework and project deadlines necessarily limit the hours left in the day for just vegging on a screen. When those demands on time suddenly evaporate at the end of the school year, rules about media use tend to slacken, and children may start to spend far more time staring at computer and TV screens.

Following are a few ideas from the Parents Television Council for keeping screen time use under control during summer vacation.

1. Establish Screen Time Rules

Many parenting blogs have ideas about rewards systems that involve completing certain tasks in exchange for screen time. Children get to choose which chores to do in exchange for screen time. Another idea along the same lines stipulates *no* screen time until everything on a check list has

been completed, that list might include things like time spent reading or writing a letter to a pen pal, friend or family member, making something or doing something creative, time spent outdoors, and so on. Figure out what works best for your family, what tasks are ageappropriate, and what incentives work best for your youngsters.

2. Read Aloud Together

There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that children continue to benefit from being read to, even when they are able to read for themselves. In addition to helping to foster a loving, nurturing home environment, reading aloud to children impacts their cognitive, language, and social-emotional development, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

3. Add a Family Game Night Every Week

In addition to providing memories your child will cherish as he or she gets older, games

can help children learn about fair play and good sportsmanship, teamwork. Games can also help children develop planning and strategic thinking, practice math or language skills, memorization, and other skills that will benefit them in school and in life.

4. Allow for Unstructured Play

In an effort to avoid creating summertime couch potatoes, there is a danger in going too far to the other extreme -- by cramming kids’ schedules with organized activities. There is tremendous value in giving kids time to just be kids and play without adults hovering and directing their activities. They need the space to test their physical and imaginative limits; to learn how to resolve playground conflicts without an intercessor; to be comfortable with themselves, and yes, even to be bored.

5. Encourage and Enforce Outdoor Time

A growing body of research points to the human need for connection to the great outdoors. Time spent outdoors is especially important for children. It can help to restore calm, foster imagination and creative learning, encourage discovery and a love of self-directed learning.
