HONORING LOCAL VETERANS – SUCCESSFUL HEROES PROGRAM CONTINUES

A

ll three of The Suburban Chamber of Commerce communities run programs that honor local veterans with display banners with the names, images and dates of service of active military and veterans. An individual qualifies to take part in the Hometown Heroes program if they are serving or have served in any one of the following branches of the United States Armed Forces: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy. Members of the United States Merchant Marine and Women Airforce Service Pilots in World War II are also invited to apply.

NEW PROVIDENCE VETERANS BANNER PROJECT New Providence Police PBA Local #132 has been running the Veterans Banner Project since 2016. The program is ongoing with the banners updated every spring and fall. The banners are hung

from streetlights in town during certain times of year. For more information contact Detective Joe Parlapiano at jparlapiano@ nppolice.org SUMMIT HOMETOWN HEROES The City of Summit has recently announced that enrollment is now open for the second year of their Hometown Heroes program. The Hometown Heroes banners will be displayed on city streets from mid-May through mid-July. In 2019, the program will be expanded from 100 participants to include a total of 200 honorees. Information on application requirements and how to apply is available at cityofsummit.org/hometownheroes.

The deadline to apply is March 31, 2019.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS HOMETOWN HEROES The Berkeley Heights Veterans Memorial Park Committee is proud to offer a third round opportunity to honor our Hometown Heroes with personalized banners. Banners are hung prior to Memorial Day and Veterans Day each year. The deadline for the next round of banners is March 1, 2019. There is no fee to participate in these programs, however donations are greatly appreciated. Reach out to the contacts for each town for more information.

JOHN W. COOPER RETIRES AFTER 28 YEARS AS PRESIDENT OF SAPF; BOARD NAMES NEW OFFICERS

J

ohn W. Cooper (Jack) has retired as president of the board of Summit Area Public Foundation.

The board has appointed Julie Keenan to succeed him. When Cooper first joined the board as president in 1990, the organization held $1 million in assets. Under his leadership, SAPF has grown its assets to $16 million, which includes 35 donor-advised and restricted-purpose funds.

Through these funds, SAPF has supported hundreds of local area nonprofit organizations and agencies.

“Jack Cooper exemplifies the true spirit of philanthropy through his extraordinary support of our community,” said Summit Mayor Nora Radest. “After having achieved tremendous success in business, he generously committed his knowledge, time, and resources to help others to advance as well. Under his three decades of leadership, SAPF grew exponentially into one of the largest and most successful area foundations, funding initiatives and supporting the work of organizations to make an indelible, lasting mark on our community.”

In addition to his leadership of SAPF, Cooper has served as a

trustee with many other local nonprofit organizations, including Overlook Hospital Foundation, SAGE Eldercare, Summit Area United Way, Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, Summit Family Service Association, Summit Speech School and Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child. Cooper was a partner at Lindabury, McCormick, Estabrook and Cooper, P.C. In addition to naming Julie Keenan as president, the SAPF board has named David Dietze as vice president, Sandra R. Lizza as secretary, Leah Griffith as treasurer and Martha Sayre as assistant treasurer.

COACH ART CATTANO 500 TH WIN

n Saturday, December 29th with a win over Somerville HS in the Chatham Cougar Classic, Coach Art Cattano notched his 500th career coaching victory. In doing so, he became the 28th coach in New Jersey and just the 4th coach in Union County to achieve this incredible accomplishment. Throughout his 36 years as head coach of the New Providence Boys Varsity Basketball Team, Coach has won five Conference championships, one Sectional Championship, and one Group 1 State Championship in 1999. He has watched 2 of his players surpass the 1000 career point mark under his tutelage with three current players on the doorstep and a fourth potentially on his way as well. Several of his former players have gone on to pursue the coaching profession including two on his staff today. Perhaps even

more impressive than the wins themselves is the manner in which he has approached coaching his players. Throughout the course of his career, Coach Cattano has always focused on the big picture and teaching each of his players what it takes to be “a good person” above anything else. Every season, his teams play hard, respect their opponents and respect the game. His players have moved on and become great men, husbands, and fathers, thanks in large part to their time as members of the NPHS boys’ basketball program. So on behalf of the entire NPHS administration, athletic department, and faculty, all NPHS players past and present, family & friends, and all of ‘Neer Nation, we congratulate Coach Cattano on his 500th win and look forward to many more!!

HIGHLANDER CHEERLEADING TAKES AWARDS!

T

he Highlander Varsity Winter Cheerleading team has been owning the mat this season!

Their first weekend out competing was a clean sweep, taking home first place trophies from both the Hackensack 13th Annual Cheer Challenge and the Saddle Brook High School 11th Annual Competition. The team continues to cheer on the GLHS Varsity Boys basketball team as their season progresses as well. Coaches Emily Stecher and Alecia Collins thank all of their athletes, along with their parents, for their tireless hard work and unwavering dedication.

SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SWIM TEAM’S HISTORIC SEASON

T

he Summit High School Boys Swim Team has had a stellar season thus far. On January 29, they completed their dual meet season with a perfect record of 11-0, highlighted by an historic win over Westfield for the first time in decades. Over the course of the season, Senior co-captains Rawleigh Pollock, Conor Fagan and Bryan Harvey along with teammates Will Hedges, Alex Jones and Matt McGregor achieved qualifying times for the prestigious Meet of Champions.

On Sunday January 27, the team once again made history when they won the Union County Championship outright for the first time in Summit High School’s history. The tone was set in

the first event with a Summit first place by 0.03 seconds in the Medley relay. The team achieved countless best times and every swimmer earned points in every event. Conor Fagan and Rawleigh Pollock also set new high school records for the 100 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle, respectively. When asked about the win, Coach Piede said, “It still has not sunk in. We really had one chance at it and made it count. Everyone had to be pretty much perfect, and they were.”

The team aspires to continued success as they move into the State Championship tournament which is set to begin the first week of February.

FAMILY PROMISE KICKS OFF 2019 WITH BACK TO THE 80S DANCE PARTY

T

o celebrate its 30th year of serving children and families battling homelessness, Family Promise and event Co-Chairs Jennifer Glatt and Liz Frank took guests back to the decade of hairspray and shoulder pads with a Back to the 80s Dance Party fundraising event.

Attendees donned their gnarliest neon leg warmers and parachute pants at the Elks Lodge in Summit with DJ Paul Fessock from World of Rock spinning tunes from the early days of MTV. “We thought it’d be fun to celebrate the fact that Family Promise was founded in the 80s by hosting a theme party based on that decade,” says

Family Promise kicked off its 30th Anniversary celebration with a gala in October and will be hosting several events this spring, including a Paddle Luncheon at Beacon Hill Club on February 22 and a Family Fund Day in May. The events offer thanks to the many friends who have helped thousands of families overcome trying obstacles and regain their independence.

SAGE Eldercare will offer a new free, 8 week bereavement support group beginning February 5, for people age 60 and older who have lost a spouse in the last year. During the first year, the world can feel like a different place to the one who is grieving.

Feb 07 Free Tax Assistance at SAGE Free tax counseling and preparation for middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those who are 60 years of age and older, is available at SAGE Eldercare, located at 290 Broad Street in Summit, on Thursdays from February 7 through April 11, 2019, from 9 am to 12 pm. Dates include: February 7, 14, 21, 28, March 7, 14, 21, 28, April 4 and 11. During the ten-week program, SAGE will host IRS-trained volunteer tax preparers from AARP. The assistance is provided by AARP as part of a national Tax-Aide program through its foundation in conjunction with the IRS. Area residents in Essex, Morris, Somerset, and Union Counties do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use the service. This is a confidential service and preparation is by appointment only. To avoid end of tax season rush, earlier appointments are encouraged. Feb 19 Reminisce about the great American pastime Mark Di Ionno is a lifetime newspaperman, a 2013 Pulitzer Prize finalist in news commentary, and a fivetime winner of the New Jersey Press Association’s first-place award for column writing will talk about his lifetime involvement in sports reporting. His columns appear regularly in The Star-Ledger, and its online partner, nj.com. Di Ionno began his career in sports and was a columnist at The New York Post, where he broke many stories, including parts of baseball’s case against Pete Rose and the undoing of Mike Tyson.

In his talk he will also discuss his second novel, Gods of Wood and Stone, the story of two men, framed by the lens of baseball—a timeless but strikingly singular tale of the responsibilities of manhood and the pitfalls of glory.
