is a boutique personal training studio exclusively for women that evolved by answering the question: Why are there so few women at the gym?

Other than group classes, many women were not using the facilities that they were paying for. When asked why, the responses we heard over and over again were: I don’t know what to do on the machines I’m afraid I will hurt myself by doing something the wrong way Everyone else knows what they are doing except me Hiring one of the gym’s personal trainers on top of the membership fees is just too expensive

From that, the concept of a fitness studio just for women with personal trainers to take you through every step of the workout in a safe, non-threatening but challenging environment was created.

“Accountability is one of the most important reasons our clients are able to make working out a habit, not something they do off and on,” Carolyn said. “We understand that women take care of everyone else’s needs before their own, so by having an appointment they are much more likely to schedule around it and show up. Our clients’ accountability is to show up for their appointments and work hard. Our accountability is to give them a challenging and complete workout in one hour and to offer the support and planning needed to succeed in the journey to be stronger, healthier and happier.”

The studio has been in operation for nine years and was the first tenant at The Promenade at Summit on Morris Avenue. Carolyn Fine is a long-time Summit resident and owner of Fine Fit. She and her husband Mike raised their children in town and have been active members of the community for more than 20 years. Carolyn is the manager, trainer and also a client at the studio – a constant reminder that the staff and clients alike are on this journey to “get stronger and feel better” together.

New YMCA to Open in Berkeley Heights Summit Area YMCA is grateful to the this Month or more than 10 years, Summit Area YMCA staff searched for a permanent location for the Berkeley Heights YMCA, to help the Y better serve the evolving needs of a growing, diverse community.

Berkeley Heights community including YMCA members, as well as township itself, for its support of the Y and its mission. Y officials said they believe the more than $14 million investment in the community “will cement it as a true community leader for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility for years to come.”

“It is not about the building, square footage or the pool. It is about expanding our mission, expanding our impact. It is about having the ability to really change lives. And that’s what we’re celebrating, our ability to do this,” said Summit Area YMCA President and CEO Paul Kieltyka.

‘AMAZING’ -- When it opens on Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights this month, the new branch of the YMCA that has been described by Y staff as “40,000 square feet of amazing” will be the first new YMCA built in New Jersey in more than 10 years.

The soon-to-open building is the first new YMCA branch built in New Jersey in more than 10 years. The facility at 59 Locust Ave. is “40,000 square feet of amazing,” as emphasized by the Y’s marketing campaign. The Berkeley Heights Y now offers a lobby, childcare center, full-size gymnasium, three exercise studios, wellness center, functional training space, multi-purpose rooms, social lounge, an Olympic-size seasonal heated outdoor community pool, an outdoor playground and 195 parking spots.

The new Berkeley Heights YMCA is expected to open in early February, and the grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29, at 10 a.m. Learn more at thesay.org.

ffective May 1, businesses in Summit will no longer be allowed to hand out plastic bags to customers, and Green Summit and the Summit Area GreenFaith Circle have joined forces to design and distribute signs to be posted on/in store and restaurant windows reminding people to bring reusable bags.

The city’s recently-passed plastics ordinances consist of three parts: they restrict businesses from distributing plastic bags to customers, they require straws be distributed only upon request and they ban polystyrene (Styrofoam) food containers.

Gio Sce of Green Summit came up with the idea of posting signs to help people get used to carrying reusable bags with them at all times, including bags made of plastic that predate the passing of the ordinance. Last fall, Mr. Sce posted a question on Facebook: “Who will help create and post some signs to remind people to bring reusable bags?” Mimi Zukoff, one of the founders and leaders of the Summit Area GreenFaith Circle, responded that she would help, and the project evolved from there.

Mr. Sce and Ms. Zukoff worked with selfdescribed “eco-crusader” and graphic designer Courtney Cordaro and Antoinette LaVecchia of the Summit UPS store on the design. The store printed the first stack of signs free of charge.

Green Summit is a group of citizens who work together on environmental initiatives. The Summit Area GreenFaith Circle is an interfaith group comprised of 14 Summit and Chatham houses of worship that collaborate on environmental education and advocacy. It is a local affiliate of a global interfaith environmental organization.

Summit joins Chatham, Madison and Maplewood in passing plastics restrictions. The New Jersey state legislature is expected to introduce legislation restricting single-use plastics during its next session. If the state passes stricter regulations on plastics use, it will supersede local ordinances.

Originally from the Pittsburgh area, the couple met through mutual friends when Bev was a nursing student and Ray was studying for his CPA. They tied the knot in 1967. Their daughter Pamela lives in Chatham and their son Paul resides in Montville.

They have five grandchildren, ages 12 to 20.

The couple began volunteering at SAGE after Bev retired from Schering - Plough Pharmaceutical in 2014. Ray had retired a few years earlier from his post as CFO at Ebasco Services in New York. “I was driving on Broad Street and saw the sign at SAGE,” Bev said. “I thought it would be a nice thing for Ray and me to do together.” The couple delivers meals in the Springfield area every Friday.

Asked what they enjoy most about being volunteers, the couple replied that they are happy to give caregivers one less thing to worry about, cooking a meal. They are also glad, the Casiricos said, to provide a watchful eye for those clients living alone who may not have another visitor all day. “We’ve gotten to experience the good work SAGE does and are so happy to be a part of it,” Bev said.

Other places the couple volunteers include the surgical family waiting area at Morristown Medical Center (Bev) and the Literacy Volunteers of Morris County (Ray). For fun, Bev and Ray like to attend their grandchildren’s sporting events. There are a lot of them -- soccer, softball, track and basketball. “We go to all of them,” said Bev with a big smile.

The assistance is provided by AARP as part of a national Tax-Aide program through its foundation in conjunction with the IRS.
