With multiple matches set to be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, Berkeley Heights is planning what local organizers – under the leadership of Karen Cassells -- are touting as the most extensive World Cup celebration of any municipality in New Jersey. A month of watch parties, community events and business promotions is in the works, and all are invited to take part.
The kickoff is Saturday, June 13, at Veterans Park and on the newly renamed Santore Field, rebranded for the day as “World Cup Village,” with an international food court, soccer activities for children, a Trap Rock beer garden and a disc jockey. An event on June 19 at the VFW will feature food trucks, outdoor viewing and "Kick It with a Cop," during which children will try to score on members of the Berkeley Heights Police Department. The finale is July 19 at The Park, where a large-scale celebration is in the planning stages.
In addition to public events, township restaurants and venues are being asked to host their own watch parties, with the goal of drawing visitors from across New Jersey.
The annual Summit College Club Book Sale will take place Wednesday, April 15, through Sunday, April 19, at American Legion Post #433, 357 Elkwood Ave., New Providence. Donations in good condition are being accepted at the site Friday, April 10, through Monday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We accept books of all kinds -- fiction, non-fiction, children's books, foreign language, hard- and soft-cover, plus DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, audiobooks and jigsaw puzzles,” organizers said. “We cannot accept magazines, encyclopedias, manuals, textbooks or VHS tapes, or books that are missing covers or have pages that are water-stained, mildewed or otherwise damaged.”
Preview Day is Wednesday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For a $25 admission fee, shoppers receive early access.
Admission is free April 16 to 19. Hours will be Thursday and Friday, April 16 and 17, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 19 (Bag Day), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Book Sale is the primary fundraiser for the Summit College Club, with proceeds used to provide scholarships to young women from local high schools who will be attending four-year colleges, and to women returning to a local community college after a break in their education. Since its inception, the group has awarded hundreds of scholarships totaling more than $1 million.

Patria Station Café, with its strong Argentine following, has announced plans for multiple watch parties centered on Argentina matches. The restaurant will also unveil a street mural of Lionel Messi by an Argentine artist and a temporary renaming of a section of Sherman Avenue as "Leo Messi Way."
A month-long 50/50 benefiting the Berkeley Heights Education Foundation runs through the tournament, with the winner announced at the July 19 finale.

On Sunday, April 12, the Reeves-Reed Arboretum, 265 Hobart Ave., Summit, welcomes all to its annual Daffodil Day Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. With one of N.J.’s largest collections, the arboretum’s Daffodil Bowl boasts more than 50,000 of the flowers at peak bloom..
The afternoon features hands-on activities, entertainment, local artisans, vendors and seasonal treats. A woodland story walk and history trail, and access to the current Wisner House art exhibit, are also included.

The story is based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play “Pygmalion,” and tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins, who is convinced she will be able to pass as a lady.

The mission of the members of the New Providence Garden Club is to promote an interest in gardening, landscape design and flower arranging, while encouraging the study of horticulture.
To that end, the members have created and maintained the gardens at the historical society’s Salt Box Museum and at the New Providence Memorial Library, have taken part in the annual New Providence Fall Street Fair and host regular meetings that are open to the public.
On Monday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the library, speaker Carol Demanski will share knowledge about creating a native garden. A Master Gardener, she is also a member of the local chapter of the Native Plant Society.
On Saturday, May 9, in conjunction with the historical society’s Annual Craft Fair at the Salt Box Museum, 1350 Springfield Ave., garden club members will host their plant sale. Along with donated plant material from local garden centers, transplants from members’ gardens will be offered. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is free.

The New Providence Memorial Library has been selected as one of 40 libraries nation-wide to participate in the Yiddish Book Center’s Public Libraries Program on the theme “Between Two Worlds: Exploring Jewish Culture and Religion through Yiddish Literature.”
The center provides grants, resources and training to public libraries to host reading groups and related programming that explore how Yiddish literature can provide a springboard for powerful conversations about religion, assimilation, identity and immigration.
Ellen Zander, the reference librarian at the NPML, attended a three-day workshop at the Yiddish Book Center campus in Amherst, Mass. She said she plans to organize reading groups to discuss three books in translation in 2026. The Yiddish titles in the book discussion group include: Tevye the Dairyman by Sholem Aleichem (translated
into English by Aliza Shevrin); The Zelmenyaners: A Family Saga by Moyshe Kulbak (translated by Hillel Halkin); and A Jewish Refugee in New York by Kadya Molodowsky (translated by Anita Norich).
The library book group will also read Hula by Jasmine Iolani Hakes.
“The training at the Yiddish Book Center was a wonderful opportunity…We can’t wait to host meaningful discussions around the three Yiddish texts as well as our chosen book,” Ms. Zander said.
“Along with book discussions, we look forward to offering cultural programs for the community to enjoy in 2026 including a klezmer performance, speakers and a virtual live tour of the Yiddish Book Center.”

To mark Local Government Week, residents are invited to the second annual City of Summit Showcase on Wednesday, April 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. at fire headquarters, 281 Broad St.
The event is an opportunity to connect with the people who work every day to keep Summit running smoothly. Residents of all ages are invited to get an inside look at the firehouse, explore a fire truck, check out police gear and DPW equipment, and meet city officials from departments including trash collection, parking, finance and community programs.
Highlights of the afternoon include the chance to:
• See a fire truck up close and meet Summit firefighters
• Learn about police equipment and talk to police officers
• Check out Division of Public Works equipment
• Learn about key city services and meet city staff and officials
• Explore volunteer opportunities with city boards, committees and commissions
• Take home Summit swag and prizes
“I encourage everyone to attend and get to know the many faces of our local government,” said Mayor Elizabeth Fagan, MD. “Summit would not be the wonderful place we know and love without the dedication and service of our city staff and volunteers. This event is an opportunity to connect with those individuals and learn about the many ways the city works for you.”
It’s trout time. Summit anglers of all ages are invited to spend a spring weekend enjoying the PAL Fishing Derby set for Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, at the Summit Municipal Golf Course, located at 189 River Road. No golf membership is required to take part.
All are welcome to gather around the Muni pond from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The pond will be stocked with rainbow trout. Eventgoers will have the chance to catch one of the 10 21-inch prize fish, which will be swimming among an additional 1,000 13-inch trout.
Free hot dogs and sodas will be served from the PAL food cart.
The derby will take place rain or shine. Admission is free. Participants are asked to bring their own rods and reels. Bait and tackle will be for sale. Free parking will be available on-site.
This annual event is sponsored by the Summit PAL along with Summit Community Programs.
It’s the date we’ve been waiting so patiently for –April 19, kickoff of this year’s Farmers Market. In the largest shopper lot on DeForest Avenue each Sunday, rain or shine from 8 to 1, local vendors, fresh produce and a great crowd make it the place to be. Don’t forget to stop by the table hosted by volunteers from GRACE, where you can drop off donations of produce or cash to benefit neighbors in need.
While it was certainly a rough winter weather-wise, there are so many upcoming outdoor activities to put on your calendars that the cold and snow will quickly fade from memory.
Thursday, June 4, from 4 to 8 p.m., the city will come alive with games, entertainment, food, music and activities for all ages during Summit Downtown, Inc.’s annual Family Fun Night. Street Sounds in the business district will start up again Thursday and Friday evenings in June and July, and before you know it, we will be gathering on the Village Green for concerts and movies, too.
Summit Downtown Welcomes the World is the theme for local events celebrating the World Cup. On Thursday, June 11, the Bank Street lot will host a watch party for the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, with food trucks, a beer and wine garden, and a giant TV screen. Festivities will be repeated on Sunday, July 19, for a championship watch party.

In Berkeley Heights, spring cleaning is something we take seriously! Our town-wide chipping collection begins April 6, with details available at berkeleyheights. gov. Sticks and branches only, please, and materials must be out for pickup by 7 a.m. on the first scheduled day for your section and be in appropriate cans.
Bulk pickup begins May 4 through May 19. The contractor will cover each street only once, so be sure to have items out on the correct date. Acceptable materials include appliances, couches, doors, mattresses, rugs, screens, toys and rolled wire fencing. Our website has a complete list of both acceptable and items not permitted, which include grass, paint, propane tanks, auto parts and concrete blocks.
As most of you probably know by now after my announcement a few weeks ago, I have made the decision not to run for reelection. My time as your mayor has been incredibly worthwhile and fulfilling, and I thank you for your support and friendship. One of the programs I am most proud of is creation of the Mayors Wellness Committee, and I hope all of you have had a chance to take part in some of our activities. Coming up is our local commemoration of World Tai Chi Day on April 25, and our May 1 kickoff of Mental Health Awareness Month. I hope you will mark your calendars and join us as we begin with hosting Berkeley Heights Green Ribbon Day at Town Hall. As we get closer, check the township website for details on all of these events.

After a winter we sometimes felt might never end, it is finally spring, and you know what that means – the lights are on for evening tennis and pickleball on our borough courts. Reservations -- for New Providence residents only – can be made via CommunityPass through the borough website, newprov.us. Get out there and enjoy the great weather!
Also check the website for details on this year’s Fishing Derby, which is May 2. We stock the pond at Oakwood Park for this favorite annual event co-sponsored by PBA Local 132 and New Providence Recreation, and it’s always a good time. The kids always enjoy catching trout, winning prizes and the refreshments.
On May 3 from 9 to 2 we’ll have a newer event that’s already a favorite, the Freecycle Fest, in the parking lot at the New Providence Pool. Donations will be accepted until noon. Hosted by the borough and the Sustainable New Providence Committee, this is a “free garage sale” featuring donated, workable/usable items that others can take home and re-use – at no cost.

New Providence
Alan J. Kennedy, director of the Berkeley Heights Wastewater Treatment Plant, has received the Leroy Forman Award from the N.J. Water Environment Association, which honors professionals who demonstrate exceptional technical knowledge, dedication to environmental stewardship and commitment to advancing the water environment profession.
Mr. Kennedy, a licensed wastewater treatment operator, has been a leader in Berkeley Heights’ environmental and infrastructure initiatives since joining the township’s Water Pollution Control Plant in 2017. Starting as an entry-level operator, he rose through the ranks before being named director in 2023.
Upon stepping into the director role, Mr. Kennedy was tasked with overseeing the Wastewater Treatment Plant Modernization Program, a long-term project aimed at making critical upgrades to the plant’s aging infrastructure while transforming its operational structure.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Leroy Forman Award from NJWEA,” said Mr. Kennedy. “This recognition affirms the progress we’ve made over the past several years in building a science-based, data-driven approach to wastewater treatment. It’s a testament not just to individual effort, but to the collective commitment of our team to ensure safe, efficient and environmentally responsible service to the residents of Berkeley Heights.”
Mr. Kennedy, a Navy veteran, holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Southern New Hampshire University, as well as a B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University.
“Alan’s leadership, vision and technical expertise have helped us turn this vast treatment plant around,” said Mayor Angie Devanney.
As part of the city’s Revolutionary Trail Day on Saturday, April 18, Pat Wells will present a free slide talk at the Summit Free Public Library, co-sponsored by the Summit Historical Society.
“General George Washington spent more time in New Jersey than any other state during the Revolutionary War,” said Ms. Wells, explaining why she titled her talk “Washington Slept Here – A Lot.” Some of the documented Washington-related sites are still standing, some that are gone are memorialized with plaques and quite a few are close by.
The armchair tour will be offered both in person at the library, 75 Maple St., at 2:30 p.m., and also via Zoom. Register at summitlibrary.org.
Ms. Wells is a long-time local resident, vice president of the Chatham Township Historical Society and the creative force behind History is Speaking. Her talks are informative, humorous and filled with illustrations and maps.
Summit’s Revolutionary Trail Day is part of the city’s commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, and runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The day, for all ages, will include a variety of events taking place at the library, Twin Maples (214 Springfield Ave.) and on the Village Green, including a “Women and the Revolution” presentation, musical performances, crafts and plays staged by Summit students.
