Heidi Sussman and Lesya Hanenko Dovbenko Featured at the Art Center T he Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is presenting two new shows in the member exhibition series, which highlights the work of members and students selected by the Art Center’s Membership Committee. These two shows will run through April 2nd, and will feature work by Heidi Sussman and Lesya Hanenko Dovbenko.

Heidi Sussman, from West Orange, will present her mixed media work in a show titled Dawn or Dusk (left). The works on display were created by combining traditional and digital media.

Lesya Hanenko Dovbenko, from Roselle Park, presents a show titled Colors in Nature and Artistic Design (right).

While the subject matter on display is varied, the artist uses color in all of her work to relay intricate and complicated feelings and emotions.

Summit College Club Book Donations and Sale

T

he Summit College Club (SCC) will hold its annual book sale from April 24th through 29th at the American Legion Post No. 433 located at 357 Elkwood Ave in New Providence, next to the New Providence Library.

Book Donations for the sale can be brought to the American Legion from April 13th through April 19th, 2018 (daily from 10 -6, on April 19th, 10-9). The books must be in good condition and packed in bags

or small boxes. Donations of books, CDs, and DVDs are welcome but please no textbooks, manuals, magazines or encyclopedias.

Book Sale Dates and Times: April 24th 9am – 3pm (Entry fee first day only $25); All other days Free Entry: April 25th and 26st 10am – 9pm; April 27th and 28th 10am – 6pm; April 29th 10 – 4pm. Sunday, April 29th, is Bag Day when customers may fill a grocery shopping bag with books for $5.

Last year, SCC members collected and organized thousands of books for the sale. Nearly all the books are priced from 50 cents to one or two dollars. The eagerly anticipated six-day sale regularly attracts hundreds of customers, dealers and readers from the tri state region.

Proceeds from the sale are used to fund college scholarships for deserving young women in local high schools. The sale was first held in 1935 and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships over the years.

Hearing Better for 35 Years in Summit T his February Summit Hearing Aid Center celebrated its 35th year providing hearing healthcare for Union, Morris and Essex counties.

The services provided include comprehensive hearing evaluations, hearing aid consultation and evaluations, fitting and programming of hearing devices ( aka hearing aids) and tinnitus management.

Providing a better quality of life for those with hearing difficulties is what the staff and our

Doctors of Audiology and Hearing Health Professionals do every day.

Besides the advances in technology, the ages of patients have expanded to include a younger demographic 45-50 year olds and an older population 80-100. The younger groups knows how important it is to be able to keep up, especially at work. The more mature group is vibrant, and they embrace technology and want to keep up and be connected to the world around them.

Summit Approves Hometown Heroes Program T he City of Summit has established a Summit Hometown Heroes program to recognize and honor local veterans. Through the program, the names, images and dates of service of participants will appear on banners displayed along city streets from Memorial Day through July 4. The program will be funded through private donations; there is no fee to participate. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2018.

An individual is eligible to take part in the Hometown Heroes program if they are serving or have served in any one of the following branches of the United States Armed Forces: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy. Members of the United States Merchant Marine and Women Airforce Service Pilots in World War II are also invited to apply. Applicants must also have lived in Summit at any time in the past or present, or are currently or have been employed by the City of Summit or Summit Board of Education, or are current or former volunteers in the Summit EMS, Police Auxiliary and Volunteer Fire Division.

In 2018, the program will be limited to the first 90 applicants that meet eligibility requirements. An additional 10 participants will be selected based on special merit by the American Legion. The City of Summit reserves the right to remove a banner for any reason.

Local Officials Participate in SAGE Eldercare’s March for Meals

S

ummit Mayor Nora Radest and SAGE Eldercare volunteer and Board of Trustees member, Chris Glacken of Berkeley Heights, recently teamed up to deliver Meals on Wheels to Summit residents.

Senator Tom Kean Jr. also joined the “March” with SAGE Executive Director Angela Sullivan and volunteers William and Karen Ayers.

They are all part of the 16th annual March for Meals – a monthlong, nationwide celebration of Meal on Wheels and the homebound and vulnerable senior clients who rely on its vital safety net.

SAGE’s Meals on Wheels is the oldest continuously run program in New Jersey. The program provides more than 46,000 meals to about 225 people in Berkeley Heights, Mountainside, New Providence, Springfield, Summit, Millburn, Short Hills, Chatham and Madison.

“The services that we provide the seniors in our area are critical; it’s not just a warm meal, but also a friendly visit, sometimes the only human contact a senior gets the whole day,” said Marianne Kranz, SAGE Director of Meals on Wheels and Home Support Services. “Together, we can keep seniors living independently, healthier at home and feeling more connected to their community as they age.”

Other local officials who have participated in the March for Meals this year include New Providence Mayor Al Morgan, Berkeley Heights Mayor Robert Woodruff, Congressman Leonard Lance and members of local police and rescue squads.

SAPF Names New Trustees Presbyterian Church.

James Fleischmann is managing director at Kennebec Capital Management. Fleischmann formerly worked at TIAA-CREF and Salomon Brothers Asset Management. He has served on the library boards at the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State and the Summit Free Public Library, as well as the Summit YMCA and Homeless Solutions Board.

he Summit Area Public Foundation (SAPF) has announced the appointment of five members to its Board of Trustees.

Joining the board are Leah Griffith, as assistant treasurer, and James Fleischmann, Patricia Fontan, Drew Maldonado and Julie Adams, as trustees.

Patricia Fontan is an adjunct professor in the STEM department at Union County College. She is the Hispanic Community Liaison for the Summit schools and co-chair of the Mayor’s Forum of Diversity. She formerly worked at Rutgers University and the Public Health Research Institute at the International Center for Public Health at the New Jersey Medical School.

TEENS PROVIDE CELLPHONE SUPPORT THROUGH SAGE

92 - Year-old Thelma Wasserman can finally use her cell phone properly thanks to the new Teen Smartphone Support program offered through SAGE Eldercare, The free program teams a tech savvy teen

with an older adult in the adult’s home to answer all their cellphone questions. Sessions include learning to FaceTime, use Facebook, text, check the weather, email, take photos and more. Mrs. Wasserman’s son gave her a cell phone one year ago, but she didn’t know how to use it. “I had no knowledge, just aggravation,” she said. Since getting help through SAGE, she can now see photos of her four grandchildren, make calls and recently she had her first FaceTime call with her son in Kentucky.

h is year marks the 40th annual Summit Tot Trot,

a fun-filled field event where kids between the ages of two and ten run, race and have a ball.

Created by the Summit Junior Fortnightly Club, the Tot Trot has grown from a memorable annual event into a meaningful Summit tradition that celebrates the spirit of community caring and fun. Each year, children and their families from Summit and surrounding towns come out to Memorial Field for a day of outdoor fun that includes a petting zoo, bouncing houses, games of all kinds, face painting, crafts and refreshments. The event is culminated in a race for the participating kids. The entire event is run by volunteers, over half of whom are young people between the ages of 8 and 20. Parents who participated in the event as children now bring their own children to this wonderful Memorial Field event.

Lois Schneider Realtor, well-known for its philosophy of generous community giving, has been a major benefactor of this event for the past 40 years, as well. The partnership forged between the Summit Junior Fortnightly Club and Lois Schneider Realtor for this event has resulted in significant grants over the years to many worthy non-profit organizations in our area. Last year’s beneficiary was TryCAN Collaboration, with a Tot Trot check presented to the organization for over $10,000.00 This year’s recipient is The Dyslexia Center of Scotch Plains, New Jersey.
