Kent Place School to implement the KENT PLACE SPACE PROGRAM

K

ent Place School, a non-sectarian college preparatory school for girls in Summit, NJ, has announced its plans to implement the Kent Place Space Program. The school is set to take part in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP), a national education program that will engage hundreds of our students in real microgravityexperiment design.

Kent Place School has secured a flight-certified mini-laboratory from the SSEP. The initiative will immerse Kent Place students in scientific research and proposal writing. The formal calls for proposals mirrors how professional researchers secure limited assets, and will thus expose the students to a crucial aspect of a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Additionally, this opportunity gives them an obvious role in America’s space program. Students in grades 5-12 will write proposals for experiments to be conducted at the International Space Station (ISS).

The young women will work in research teams of three to five to come up with the best experiment to be tested in space.

Jim Flakker, Chair of the Science Department at Kent Place, coordinated the school’s participation in the program this year, and hopes that it will set the girls on a trajectory of excellence. “This program provides our students with the most realistic scientific work experience I’ve ever come across.

This competition mimics the process of scientists responding to a “call for proposals” and provides two very unique educational opportunities.” Flakker said. “The students must first pose an interesting scientific question regarding the nature of the physical, chemical or biological system. Then the students, through collaboration, must engineer an experiment that can answer that question within the stated experiment specifications and operational constraints. We are helping our students develop the skills necessary to become leaders the next generation workforce.”

Review of all proposals culminates when the SSEP National Step 2 Review Board meets at the Smithsonian, in Washington, D.C., to select one flight experiment for each participating community. All will be part of a commercial spaceflight payload for SSEP Mission 10 to the International Space Station.

They will launch on a SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket from

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, and be operated in low Earth orbit by an astronaut.

The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program is undertaken by the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE) in partnership with NanoRacks, LLC. This on-orbit educational research opportunity is enabled through NanoRacks, which is working in partnership with NASA under a Space Act Agreement as part of the utilization of the International Space Station as a National Laboratory.

Changes in Summit High School Staff Announced

P

aul Sears, Principal of Summit High School since 2003 has recently retired. This has created a number of leadership changes at Summit High School Stacy Grimaldi, succeeded him in the Kent Place Boulevard School’s top post. Ms. Grimaldi has been Assistant Principal at SHS for the past seven years.

Summit High School special education teacher Lorena Dolan has been appointed as the new Assistant Principal to replace Ms. Grimaldi.

Michael Lapotasky was also appointed recently as a vice principal at Summit High School. Mr. Lapotasky was formerly supervisor of social studies and language at Warren Hills Regional High School. He replaces former Vice Principal Anthony Akey.

ver thirty downtown restaurants participated in Summit Downtown’s 8th Annual Restaurant Week with special menus, discounts, and more. To celebrate downtown Summit’s food scene, Summit Downtown, Inc. hosted a Restaurant Week Photo Contest, and the results are in! Many cute, drool-worthy, stunning photos were submitted.

Taking home the prize for Most Likes by the close of voting on Friday, March 4 is Lady Paggao’s photo of a boy savoring a Cheese Quesadilla at Tito’s Burritos & Wings. Lauren Ruggiero’s photo titled “Baby’s First Ice Cream”, showing three children enjoying froyo from 16 Handles, came in second place in the Most Likes category.

The good people at Peter Wallburg Studios had the daunting task of choosing the Best in Show winner. Said Peter of Peter Wallburg Studios, “It was definitely a challenge. There were just so many great photos to choose from!” After much debate, Best in Show was awarded to Daniel Clavijo’s stunning black and white photo of cupcakes from Brownie Points Bakery.

ummit Community Programs (DCP) was recently recognized by the New Jersey Recreation and Parks Association with three separate awards presented during the Annual NJRPA Conference. DCP Brand Manager, Sophie H. Mannaerts and DCP Board Presiding Officer, James Colucci proudly took home the Agency Showcase Award in Digital Media Promotion for their work on Shark Diddy TV. Summit College Club Book Sale Set T he Summit College Club (SCC) will hold its annual book sale from April 19th through 24th, 2016 at American Legion Post No. 433 located at 357 Elkwood Ave in New Providence. Last year the Club members collected and offered for sale more than 40,000 books. Most hard cover books are priced at one or two dollars, 50 cents for small paperbacks. The eagerly anticipated six-day sale regularly attracts hundreds of customers, dealers and readers from NJ, NY, and PA. Proceeds from the sale are used to fund college scholarships for deserving young women in local high schools.

Grant to Help Moms Helping Moms Foundation M

oms Helping Moms Foundation the community-based not-for-profit organization that distributes diapers to babies living in low-wage families in the New Jersey area, has been selected as one of 29 national recipients of the inaugural Funds for Change grant awarded by the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN).

“NDBN’s Funds for Change grants help diaper banks reach more families by investing in organizations that we recognize as growing community assets and strengthening that investment with technical support for nonprofit organizations through our national network,” said Susan Van Ness, director of programs at National Diaper Bank Network. “NDBN is very pleased to present Moms Helping Moms Foundation with a $2500 grant to further its effort to help families in New Jersey.”

According to Bridget Cutler, President of Moms Helping Moms Foundation, the grant will be used to build out their office space to allow for more inventory storage and to streamline their operational procedures.

“Having the money to reorganize our space and to purchase more shelving and bins will allow us not only to take in more inventory, but will also make the process of putting bags together for our clients much more efficient and safe. The improved safety will allow us to bring more volunteers in to help out. That coupled with the increased efficiency of our procedures will allow us to serve more clients than we are able to currently. We are very excited to get started on this project!” says Bridget Cutler, President, Moms Helping Moms Foundation.

Since its first diaper distribution in 2011, Moms Helping Moms Foundation has helped provide more than 100,000 diapers as well as other essential baby supplies to hundreds of families living in New Jersey.

Officials & Leaders Deliver Meals on Wheels S AGE Eldercare has been participating for the fourteenth consecutive year in the national “March For Meals” campaign, organized by Meals on Wheels America. Support during March will help address senior hunger and isolation in our community.

In addition to local elected officials, police and fire chiefs, and town administrators, SAGE Eldercare is encouraging local civic groups, business owners, and religious leaders to spend an hour and a half of their time to deliver meals to local seniors.

“It is important for our community partners from the towns we serve to understand

the significance of this vital program. Often, the only interaction these homebound older adults have is through our volunteers who are checking in on them daily,” noted Marianne Kranz, SAGE Eldercare Director of Volunteers and Support Services. “Without the support of local, county, and state officials, we cannot do our job of making sure these residents receive a warm meal and friendly visit, which is often the only human contact they have for the entire day.”

Community Service Association of New Providence - 3rd Annual Pasta Dinner The Community Service Association of New Providence (CSA), together with the New Providence Lions Club, will host its 3rd Annual Pasta Dinner on Sunday, April 3, 2016. Apr 19 SCC Book Sale The Summit College Club (SCC) is holding its annual book sale of more than 40,000 books, most priced at one or two dollars.

The eagerly anticipated six-day sale regularly attracts hundreds of customers, dealers and readers from NJ, NY, and PA. Many people return on successive days, emerging with shopping bags full of affordable books, CDs, and DVDs. Proceeds from the sale are used to fund college scholarships for deserving young women in local high schools. The Summit College Club is a branch of the American Association of University Women, an organization that promotes equity for all women and girls through advocacy, education,

AARP Drivers Safety Course. Learn the latest driving rules, save money on your insurance when class is completed

The Junior League of Summit in collaboration with The Summit Conservancy (TSC) will co-host the “Go Green Fair” to be held at the Summit Transfer Station on May 1, 2016 from 11:00AM - 2:00PM. This community fair, open to residents of all ages, will include demonstrations of simple ways in which families can make their homes more environmentally sustainable. The fair will showcase “green” local vendors and engage families in hands-on learning activities and exhibitions. Child-friendly educational activities will include a wildlife watch, a self-guided hike, “how to compost” visual demonstration, a “trash to treasure” arts & crafts project, and an interactive recycling game. The Summit Transfer Station sits adjacent to the Passaic River and is the site of TSC’s current projects, including hiking trails along the river, an environmental educational center and a permanent home for the Summit Free Market. The fair will be held rain or shine and the cost of admission is free. The Summit Transfer Station is located at 40 New Providence Ave, Summit.

Senior Services of the Chathams announces a Spring Cleaning Community Shred fundraiser to be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Chatham train station, Fairmount Ave. “The shred service is an ecofriendly solution to purge personal documents in a confidential way. The timing is designed to coincide with spring cleaning efforts and to follow tax time,” says Pam Mansfield, Executive Director. The public is invited to participate, and the cost is $10 per cardboard box and $5 per brown paper grocery bag. Paper clips and staples do not need to be removed. Newspapers, magazines and paperback books will be accepted, too. Money raised from the event will be used to fund wellness programs at the Senior Center. For more information, call 973 635-4565. Senior Services of the Chathams began as an outreach project of Interfaith Council of Churches and was quickly spun off into an independent 501(c)(3) organization. The 25 year-old agency runs fitness programs, support groups, a transportation service for those that don?t drive, and an information and referral service for a variety of geriatric issues including home health care needs, changes in Medicare, when to stop driving, assisted living, and government services.

Green Star Program Recognizes Business Sustainability

T

he Summit Green Star Program, launched last summer, has attracted 44 qualifying businesses and community organizations. Each if these entities, whether big or small, has adopted at least five actions that promote sustainability and often save them money.

Simple actions like turning off computers and lights at night, recycling print cartridges, promoting local events and eliminating Styrofoam are all qualifying actions, as are more specific actions like offering locally purchased food and promoting healthy activities.

Summit Green Star is a collaborative effort among the Summit Environmental Commission, the Summit Recycling Advisory Committee, Summit Downtown, Inc. and the Suburban Chamber of Commerce. Its goal is to recognize local businesses and community organizations for their sustainable actions. In order to qualify, entities only need to engage in 5 practices over 3 different categories. There is no cost and the program is completely voluntary.

Qualifying businesses and community organizations receive a distinctive window cling, a congratulatory letter and publicity.
