WALLACE CHAPEL’S PASTOR HONORED AS SUMMIT’S VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

t is difficult to find a local board or cause or community organization to which The Reverend Dr. Denison E. Harrield hasn’t contributed time and energy.

did not know how to get it listed, I just knew it needed to be done.” His dream became a reality in 2007, and today a permanent marker on the church lawn honors the church’s inclusion on the New Jersey and the National Register of Historic Places, and as a landmark within its own denomination. The building is also included on the New Jersey Women’s History Trail.

When he came to Summit’s Wallace A.M.E. Zion Chapel in 1989 after serving in Linden, the reverend said one of the first things he did was meet with then-Mayor Janet L. Whitman. “I told her, ‘I’m new, but I have an interest in helping the Summit community in any way people would like me to help,” Rev. Harrield recalled. The rest, you might say, is history.

Mayor Radest described Rev. Harrield as “the conscience” of Summit, “beloved by so many residents” and always willing to lend a hand. She described his “faithful, dedicated, visionary and committed church and community leadership,” and service to organizations that have included the Summit Housing Authority, SAGE, the Tri-City NAACP, the Overlook Hospital Chaplaincy Service Board, the Summit Helping Its People Homeless Ministry, Shaping Summit Together, the Summit African American Action Association and the Summit Rotary. In addition, he has been president of the New Jersey Council of Churches and chaplain for the Summit Police Department, is a member of the Mayor’s Diversity Forum and serves on the Summit Interfaith Council and the Overlook Medical Center Palliative Care Advisory Board.

In honor of the reverend’s lifetime of dedication to others, the Summit Common Council named him the city’s Volunteer of the Year for 2021. Mayor Nora Radest described herself as “delighted” to present the award to a man she has partnered with on so many causes.

“We also honor you,” the mayor told him, “for your wisdom and your good counsel.”

A self-described Army brat, Rev. Harrield was born in Leesville, La., near Fort Polk, where his father was stationed and his mother was an elementary school teacher. His father served for 30 years, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

After attending school in Louisiana and Georgia, Rev. Harrield graduated from Trenton Central High School and entered Howard University on an academic scholarship, where he also served in the ROTC. He went on to enroll in graduate school at Brooklyn College, graduated from New York Theological Seminary and holds a doctor of divinity degree from Livingstone College in North Carolina.

Not long after being appointed pastor of Wallace Chapel, the reverend said, “I had a vision from God to do something to get the church designated as an historic site.” The Reverend Florence Spearing Randolph, who served Wallace from 1925-46, is credited with construction of the Colonial Revival building and its parsonage.

“She was the second pastor of the church,” Rev. Harrield said, “active in the women’s suffrage and temperance movements. She was also known as a social and civil rights activist. Rev. Randolph was so active in our denomination and known for so many significant things she did. The church was definitely a landmark. I

In 2004, Rev. Harrield wrote to the superintendent of schools supporting the idea that the name of Summit Middle School be changed to reflect the service of a man who was a product of the city’s public schools, served as the organist at Wallace Chapel and was office manager at the middle school for 50 years. The institution is now known as Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School.

The reverend shrugged off accolades directed his way, and said he stands “with so many other volunteers, past and present” and that his goal has always been to “enhance the quality of life for all of Summit’s residents.” He described growing up in a segregated Southern town of 2,000, thanked Summit officials for honoring him for his volunteer efforts and paid tribute to family members including his parents, his wife Ernestine (Tina), daughter Erica, son Eric, grandchildren Kendall and Crystal, and “especially” his eight-year-old great grandson, Tristan. He also paid tribute to his church officials and “my Wallace Chapel family.”

Rev. Harrield noted his goal remains a simple one, to “improve the quality of life for people in Summit.” He said he sees himself as “simply an instrument in moving the needle” in a positive direction, LOCAL LANDMARK -- A marker in and that over the years, when front of Wallace Chapel on Broad his volunteer term ended on Street in Summit notes its landmark designation.

HONORED VOLUNTEER -- The Rev. Dr. Denison Harrield has been named the City of Summit’s Volunteer of the Year for 2021. He is pastor of Wallace Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church on Broad Street, and has been an incredibly active community member since arriving in town in the late 1980s. one board, he “moved on to another,” aided in large part by a congregation whose members have always supported him wholeheartedly.

One area especially dear to him, he said, has been his work on behalf of Morris Habitat for Humanity, whose efforts have included building affordable housing on Morris Avenue in Summit, a mere stone’s throw from Wallace Chapel.

“They invited me to be a member of the board of directors,” Rev. Harrield said, “and I still support that organization very much.” When his board term expired, he became a member of Habitat’s advisory committee.

The reverend said, “I believe we are all a product of what I call the three E’s, education, environment and experience. I have a passion for people, service and seeing things change for the better.” Often, he noted, the change that takes place had a beginning at home, because “you can’t get to the top of the stairs without starting at the first step.”

In his remarks to Summit officials during the virtual council meeting, Rev. Harrield said he operates his life from a three-part, basic philosophy: 1. Is there a need?

2. Is it doable?

3. Is it the right thing to do?

If the answers to those questions are “yes,” the reverend said, “Then just get it done. You may not change the world, but you can brighten the corner where you are.”

BUCKLEY IS NEW DIRECTOR AT SAGE IN SUMMIT

S

AGE Eldercare, based in Summit, has a new executive director.

Dr. Thomas Buckley, appointed to the post in February, brings to SAGE experience and knowledge in dementia care and in other challenges facing older adults.

Dr. Buckley was formerly the director of population health at the Young Adult Institute (YAI) in New York City. YAI is at the forefront of a movement aimed at empowering people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in New Jersey, New York and California. Dr. Buckley oversaw health care coordination among the organization’s five health clinics. Prior to YAI, Dr. Buckley’s 30-year career was spent for the most part in Florida, where he was appointed by the governor as the chairman of the state’s Alzheimer’s Advisory Committee.

Additionally, he was the recipient of Federal Government Administration for Community Living grant awards.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Buckley has served on the board of directors of the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an international, independent, nonprofit organization responsible for the accreditation of 57,700 health and human service programs.

Officials at SAGE say they hope his ongoing leadership with CARF will help to create new partnerships for their organization.

Beyond his professional credentials, officials at SAGE said Dr. Buckley brings great passion and energy to everything he does.

he Visual Arts Center of New Jersey (VACNJ), on Elm Street in Summit, recently received a $3,500 grant from the Investors Foundation to support an ongoing arts and healing program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities at ECLC of New Jersey.

This program, originally envisioned as an in-person experience, was transitioned to on-line because of health restrictions adopted as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. This grant will help the program continue to provide the same level of instruction and guidance virtually.

n the words of Amy Whitney, Berkeley Heights-based Home for Good Dog Rescue is working to “weather the storm” during the current health pandemic.

As the 10-year-old foster organization prepares to celebrate its 10,000th adoption, its director of development said, “We are embarking on a new chapter in the story of the rescue as we expand transport capacity with our new van and construct our new Wellness Center animal hospital in Aiken, S.C.” Covid has presented Home for Good with “challenges as well as opportunities,” Ms. Whitney said, but staff and volunteers have not paused in efforts to find foster and forever homes for animals in need.

“Our center in Aiken pulls dogs from highrisk situations, such as shelters with high euthanasia rates, plus strays and pups from hoarding situations, and dogs from Georgia, too,” she said. “Many economic situations there have had a great effect on people and their pets.”

Berkeley Heights resident Lisa Papa is among more than 100 volunteers who offer time and talents to Home for Good.

When Home for Good gets animals to Aiken, she said they are leash-trained and housebroken, and “we kid- and cattest them, too.” By the time they reach New Jersey, by van or via planes flown by volunteer pilots two to three times each month, “pups are ready for their foster families and forever homes,” Ms. Whitney said. Prospective families in New Jersey are vetted, and only then are dogs carefully matched.

Communication education is “a big part of what we do,” Ms. Whitney noted, because “we want to show people what rescue is about, and promote rescue as a movement. Saving the life of each and every dog we come upon is our mission.”

Currently, Home for Good has about 155 families available to foster, and about 120 other active volunteers, though Ms. Whitney said there is some overlap. Noting some adaptations

due to Covid, she said when a family wishes to adopt a dog, there is still a meet and greet, which must be attended by all family members, even other pets in the home. Fundraising, too, has been a challenge over the last year.

“We are event-heavy for our funding,” said Ms. Whitney, “and after our Taste of Italy last March, everything shut down. We estimate about $150,000 in revenue from Volunteers including Kathy Zerweck of lost Summit are the backbone of Home for Good events, but we are an innovative bunch, and Dog Rescue. we have committed and generous donors, too.”

She noted there are multiple ways to support Home for Good, including donations via the group’s website – homeforgooddogs.org Sam Moreland of New – and a Providence volunteers with Home for Good Dog m o n t h l y Rescue. g i v i n g program “that comes with assets and is a great way to support us throughout the entire year.”

Home for Good Dog Rescue’s mission is based upon fostering and relies on volunteers who include Anne Conover of Chatham and Jim Demaio, a Gillette resident.

There are also “virtual adoptions,” Ms. Whitney said, “for yourself or as a gift. That way, you support a dog in foster care. We offer lots of community service opportunities with local high school students, too. If you have the time, talent or treasure, we’ll find a place for you.”

T

he Suburban Chamber of Commerce has launched a free online job posting page on its website, suburbanchambers.org.

Access is available to all.

“The page is easy to navigate for both employers and those seeking employment,” said Karen Hadley, executive director of the Chamber. “Once you open the tab labeled ‘Area Job Postings,’ click the plus sign in the upper right corner to submit a new posting.”

Listings feature space for a job description, and can be searched by candidates who will then contact the poster directly.

“Using our website’s SEO (search engine optimization) function, jobs may also appear in other web searches,” Ms. Hadley said. She explained the Chamber has been trying to find a way to “bring together businesses and

members of the community in their job and employee searches.”

Several times a week, she said, she gets calls from people seeking jobs in the Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights area.

“I tried to find a centrally-located, local job search service,” she said, “and it didn’t seem to exist. So we created a tab on our website where employers can post openings.” No membership or log-in is necessary, and posts will be made public after approval by chamber staff.

Anyone will be able to search the board using keywords, or job seekers can scan all posted positions.

“It is our hope that this service will provide a useful link between the business community and job seekers,” the Chamber director said. “Our goal is that it will grow to become a valued asset area residents and business people come to rely on for local lobs and local candidates for those positions.” She said she sees the listings as being useful to those seeking either full- or part-time employment, “and hopefully even to students looking for summer jobs and internships.”

Mrs. Hadley said the Chamber also welcomes submissions to its website’s calendar of events.

“It is our goal in the future that these events will once again be posted in our magazine, The Collection, but in the meantime, we welcome all to visit the website and post events and community happenings there,” she said.

NOW IS THE TIME TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Now is an especially important time to show support for local businesses and eateries, which continue to face challenges due to restrictions that have come with the world-wide Covid health pandemic. Even those not yet venturing out in-person to shop or eat can show their love for local in ways that include:

on specials, coupons and hours of operation.

Try to order a meal at least once a week from a local restaurant or food shop.

Understand and be supportive of hard decisions being made by local business owners. Hours may have to be reduced, customer capacity indoors (and out) may be lessened and wait times may be longer, but owners and staff are following protocols to keep themselves and you as safe as possible. Be patient and kind.

Purchase a gift card online or over the phone to use locally at a later date.

Businesses still have overhead costs even if hours are reduced and sales decline, and cash flow helps keep them afloat.

If you can’t make it in person, reach out to local businesses anyway. Most are providing curbside, contactless pickup, and many have expanded to offer local delivery service, too.
