he year 1969 will be remembered for many things – 350,000 rock-n-roll fans attended Woodstock, Apollo 11 landed on the moon, the Mets won the World Series and Sesame Street made its debut on public television. Closer to home was the 1969 opening of Taylor Rental Center in Berkeley Heights, the first such tool and party rental center in the area. Taylor Rental, still owned and operated by the Neuwirth family, is celebrating its 50th year in business. According to owner Paul Neuwirth, as a thank you in honor of the occasion, Taylor Rental will sponsor or participate in 50 different local events and fundraisers. “We are truly honored to be a part of Berkeley Heights for all these years and thank each and every one who has come through our doors since 1969,” said Mr. Neuwirth. “We are now renting to three generations of local families. Every week I meet someone who either worked for us as a teenager or whose family continues to rent for graduations, weddings, baby showers and retirement parties.” Over the years, Mr. Neuwirth said, “We have rented everything from exercise equipment

TAYLOR RENTAL MARKS MILESTONE 50 TH ANNIVERSARY to boat trailers, elephants to chariot rides. We have rented items for four presidents, been to a Governor’s Ball and provided rentals for the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden and The Belmont Stakes. We’ve rented more than 1,000,000 chairs and assisted schools, churches, non-profit organizations and groups all over central New Jersey.” Known for years as the place to go for Halloween costumes and accessories, Taylor Rental was the first such establishment to add a retail area featuring balloons, paper goods, gifts, candles and seasonal decorations. Its specialty is party rentals -- tents, tables, chairs, china, glassware and just about anything needed for a backyard party or picnic. And it continues to be the go-to location for homeowners and landscapers who need lawn and garden equipment, construction equipment, audio visual equipment and moving supplies. Taylor Rental was named the Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year in 2015. Marcia and Alan Neuwirth opened in May 1969, having rented the old Berkeley Lanes from the Fornaro family. Customers can still see the original bowling alley floor when they enter the building.

The Neuwirths later bought the property, helped form the local business association and Rotary clubs in town and started to build a foundation in the community. Both of Paul’s siblings, Phil and Lori, have worked in the business, as have many of their children. Taylor Rental will be sponsoring a community barbeque this spring, and the Berkeley Heights Summer Block Party in June. Among the 50 events, Taylor Rental is participating in the NJ Sharing Network 5k in New Providence, the Berkeley Heights Recreation Department’s Summer Concert Series, the Mother’s Day 5k in the township and fundraisers for the Brooke Healey Foundation and PTOs in Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Chatham and Long Hill Township. Taylor Rental is also supporting Relay for Life, Stirling and Berkeley Heights fire department fundraisers, the Taste of Madison, National Night Out, the Summit Lions Club, Battle of the Bulbs, the Winter Walk in Berkeley Heights, a Pedal for the Puzzle bicycle fundraiser for autism, the Governor Livingston hockey team, the Mount Carmel Circus, the JCC of Summit and the New Providence Presbyterian Church Memorial Day pancake breakfast.

he Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad has received a $10,000 grant from the Overlook Foundation for the purchase of digital radios that will be compatible with other communications systems used by first responders in Summit and the surrounding area. The squad applied for the grant to help offset the total cost of a necessary $140,000 upgrade from analog to digital radio equipment. Digital radio equipment provides first responders with added features and functionality, improved coverage and critical interoperability with other agencies. The Overlook Foundation joins Investors Foundation and the Summit Area Public Foundation in its support of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad’s campaign to update its digital radio network. “Each minute is precious when lives are in danger,” said Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad President Robert Flanagan. “Through this generous grant, the Overlook Foundation is ensuring that we can more effectively communicate with other agencies that are vital links in

Dvorak’s “Silent Woods”, R. Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger Overture”, M. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s “Procession of the Sadar”, and R. Gliere’s “Russian Sailor’s Dance”. Conducting the orchestra is Michael Stratechuk, and the cello soloist performing “Silent Woods” is Leo Grinhauz.
