Visual Arts Center’s Spring Gala a Wonderful Success!

T he Visual Arts Center of New Jersey recently held its annual spring benefit “Night of Wonder: Celebrating the Art of Imagination” at the Art Center in Summit.

It was a stylish evening that included cocktails, a seated dinner in the Main Gallery, and live and silent art auctions that raised over $180,000 to fund the Art Center’s acclaimed contemporary art exhibitions as well as outreach initiatives, including arts enrichment for underserved children, seniors, and low income families.

For more than 80 years, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has been exclusively dedicated to viewing, making, and learning about contemporary art.

Recognized as a leading non-profit arts organization, the Art Center’s renowned studio school, acclaimed exhibitions, and educational outreach initiatives serve thousands of youth, families, seniors, and people with special needs every year.

he NJ Clean Communities Council will honor New Jerseyans who have helped to keep the state cleaner at the 14th annual Clean Communities Award Dinner on May 25, 2017, at Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange. Among the awardees will be Joe Steiner and the Suburban Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber will be honored with a Clean Waterway Award for participating in the International Coastal Cleanup for many

years. “We are pleased to present the Clean Waterway Award to the Suburban Chamber of Commerce and especially thrilled to honor Joe Steiner for decades of commitment to Clean Communities and support of Clean Communities initiatives”, said Sandy Huber, executive director of the Clean Communities Council.

Girls Night Out Set For May 4 S

ummit Downtown, Inc. will host Summit’s annual Girls’ Night Out on May 4, 2017 from 5 to 9 PM.

Enjoy an evening of shopping, dining, entertainment, and giveaways with your girlfriends in downtown Summit. Participants are encouraged to start their evening at the Welcome Center, located in Lyric Park, at the corner of Bank Street and Beechwood Road. At the Welcome Center, participants can pick up their goodie bags (available on a first-come, first-served basis), and find out if they’ve won a door prize.

Registration for the event is free, and only those who pre-register will be entered into the drawing to win one of the fantastic door prizes donated by the downtown businesses. TryCAN Coordinator Receives Award From NJ CASE

K

evin Taylor, coordinator of the TryCAN Collaboration, recently accepted the Annual Recognition Award from the New Jersey Council of Administrators of Special Education (NJ CASE).

NJ CASE is comprised of special education administrators from both the private and public sector who are committed to continuous improvement of their own leadership skills and the student programs they are responsible for providing. NJ CASE provides collegial support, opportunities for information sharing and professional development. Additionally, NJ CASE provides special education leaders with a representative voice concerning issues that affect the students and families served by special education.

Prior to the launch of TryCAN, children with special needs had limited opportunities to participate in activities throughout the community, particularly in recreation. In response to this need, a group of Summit parents formed TryCAN with their goal being to educate and train the local community to understand and actively include children with disabilities in recreational, social, and vocational activities.

Ten years later, TryCAN is now an award-winning collaboration of eleven communities, including Berkeley Heights, New Providence, and Springfield. All programs incorporate trained Peer Mentors in a “kids helping kids� approach.

Typical teenage and adult volunteers are paired up with children with unique needs to boost their confidence while they tackle new sports, demonstrate

newly learned reading skills, and develop important social skills.

More than 1000 students have completed the necessary Peer Mentor training session and gone on to volunteer with TryCAN. Mentors are instrumental in the success of this program and serve as a bridge to inclusion for TryCAN children within the school system as well as within the community in general.
