ART CENTER OFFERS CAMPS, CLASSES & WORKSHOPS DURING WINTER BREAK

A

rtists—and parents of artists— looking for a fun, creative way to spend their winter break can look to the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey’s Studio School for their answer. The Art Center is offering super-condensed mini-sessions that squeeze a month’s worth of instruction into a single week. Subject matter ranges from painting and monoprint to ceramics and photography. The Center will also offer “sampler” classes that offer students a bit of everything in a single course and “intensives” that offer concentrated instruction during a single class. Week long sessions run the weeks of December 18-22, 2017, December 26-29, 2017, and January 2-5, 2018. For the entire list of offerings, and to register, visit artcenternj.org.

NJ POET BJ WARD VISITS HUGHES SCHOOL

W

hy do we drive on the parkway and park on the driveway?” This is just one of the many questions that New Jersey poet BJ Ward recently asked the Grade 5 students at Thomas P. Hughes School. Professor Ward is an award-winning poet who makes writing fun for our students. He visited each Fifth Grade class for about 90 minutes on three consecutive recent Fridays. BJ asks the students to focus on the meaning of words, showing not telling, and choosing specific words to express feelings and emotions when creating their poems. The Hughes Fifth Graders will continue to revise and edit their pieces of writing and then publish a class anthology in the upcoming weeks.

They will continue to use and further develop these invaluable writing skills – taught to them by Professor Ward - throughout the school year. He truly makes writing poetry a memorable and fun experience!

ETHICS INSTITUTE AT KENT PLACE SCHOOL AND LINCOLNHUBBARD PARTNER

T

he Ethics Institute at Kent Place School (EIKPS) recently presented a series of assemblies entitled Ethics 101, Jr. at Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School in honor of NJ Respect Week.

The goal of the assemblies was to promote the values of respect and grit through the use of video prompts, discussion groups, engaging stories, role-plays and reenacted case studies. In a developmentally sensitive fashion, students were introduced to the concept of values and to the EIKPS ethical decision-making model. The highlight of the program was an interactive role-play of an ethical dilemma presented

by KPS Middle School Peer Mediators.

Presenters at the event from Kent Place School included Director of the Ethics Institute, Dr. Karen Rezach; Ethics Institute program coordinator, Dr. Eva Lazar; Director of the Primary School, Dr. Adunni Anderson; school counselor and health education teacher, Joan Wilson, librarian, John Walz and Kent Place Middle School peer mediators.

“These workshops were proof of how successful a public and private school collaboration can be,” stated Rezach. “It was a privilege to work with such talented students as I met at the Lincoln-Hubbard School, and I believe they benefited greatly from interacting with their ‘neighbors’ from Kent Place.”

In addition to celebrating respect, the student representatives and staff from Kent Place School took time to celebrate having grit and a growth mindset. The student representatives from Kent Place School are excellent role models for our students at Lincoln-Hubbard.

HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTS

T

he Governor Livingston High School chapter of the National Honor Society recently held its Induction Ceremony at the school.

A total of 45 students were welcomed into the NHS during this formal event, which was coordinated by Mr. Daniel McGovern, Teacher of Science at GLHS and faculty advisor to the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society.

25 th Anniversary Holiday House Tour – December 7 th

T

hings are getting festive as the boughs are being hung for the 25th Anniversary of Reeves-Reed Arboretum’s Annual Holiday House Tour, set for Thursday, December 7.

The tour will include a record number of elegant homes in Summit, all decked out for the holidays, ranging from contemporary homes to stylish Tudors, along with RRA’s historic Wisner House on the Arboretum grounds. The homes will be open for touring from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Wisner House will stay open till 8 pm to accommodate the increased number of holiday house tour guests and evening shoppers.

Tickets for Holiday House Tour are $40 for RRA members ($45 for non-members).

“Every year, the Holiday House Tour gets more exciting as more people turn out to see these beautiful homes,” said Frank Juliano, Executive Director of Reeves-Reed Arboretum.

“This year’s anniversary event, especially with the extended hours to shop, promises to be one of the best ever with a record number of breathtaking homes, and even more beautiful gifts at the Holiday Boutique.”

City Awards At League Event

T

he City of Summit was the recipient of three awards at the New Jersey State League of Municipalities conference in Atlantic City.

The City of Summit achieved Sustainable Jersey Certification at the Silver Level and was awarded a Champion designation for scoring the most points in the Sustainable Jersey certification program in the medium population category. Summit has previously earned this distinction in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014. Sustainable Jersey provides tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability programs. Summit Mayor Nora Radest accepted the award for the municipality at the Sustainable Jersey awards luncheon on Tuesday, November 14.

Summit also received the New Jersey State League of Municipalities 2017 Innovation in Governance Award for its Ridesharing Technology as a Parking Solution project. The award recognizes an exemplary local government activity or

project that exhibits creative and practical approaches to local problems and concerns.

Summit’s groundbreaking program focuses on alleviating parking congestion in lots and garages near the New Jersey Transit Summit Train Station through use of ridesharing technology. It is the only program of its kind in the state of New Jersey. The award was presented to Mayor Radest and City Administrator Michael Rogers.

Finally, the City of Summit received an award for Best Web/Social Media (Class C Municipality) in the 56th Annual Municipal Public Information Contest sponsored by the Rutgers Center for Government Services, New Jersey Municipal Management Association and New Jersey State League of Municipalities. Mayor Radest, Michael Rogers and Chief Communications Officer Amy Cairns accepted the award for the City of Summit.

Summit Free Parking!

T

o help promote area businesses and encourage local shopping this holiday season, the City of Summit Parking Services Agency is partnering with Summit Downtown, Inc. to implement a number of parking modifications and incentives in the Central Retail Business District throughout the rest of 2017!

• From November 28 to Friday, December 22 from 10AM to 9PM free valet service will be provided in the Springfield Avenue Tier Garage with the purchase of daily parking. Employees and shoppers will be able to text or call ahead to have their vehicle waiting when their business in Summit is complete. Users of the Parkmobile app will receive push notifications to utilize valet parking when in the downtown.

• From December 11 to December 23, 90-minute street meters in the center of downtown will be bagged, offering complimentary parking with a 90-minute time limit strictly enforced to encourage turnover and deter long-term parking.

“The holiday season is an excellent time to implement parking incentives to encourage people to spend time and money in downtown Summit,” explains Summit Mayor Nora Radest.

“It will be a boost for local merchants and enhance the experience of visiting our downtown.”

There are seven categories, and you, as our readers can help the Chamber of Commerce leadership find the right people to recognize at our March 2018 Suburban Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner.

Here are the award categories and the criteria that the awards committee uses to choose …. v Business/Business Person of the Year – This award seeks to recognize a business or business person who has operated a respected business in our community for

at least five (5) years. The business should be recognized for outstanding practices, products and/or services. Involvement in the community by way of contributions to local programs, events and other service to the towns and organizations beyond business practices will be consider a plus. v Citizen of the Year – This award recognizes an outstanding, well-rounded citizen who lives or works in our community and has demonstrated exemplary service by way of volunteerism and community involvement. v Organization of the Year – This award is to recognize an organization which has consistently performed services within the community for at least five (5) years, and has achieved or carried out one or more outstanding events or projects during the previous year. v Public Safety Award – This award recognizes public safety officials, including Police, Fire and First Aid, who have a minimum of five (5) years of service to the township and have been involved in and contributed to an act (or acts) of exemplary service while providing for the safety of the community and its citizens. v Public Service Award – This award seeks to recognize any public employee of the community and the Board of Education with at least five (5) years of service who has made significant contributions to the community or school system above and beyond the activities and responsibilities of their present job. v Silver Service Award – This award is to recognize a private citizen or public servant who has served at least 25 years in our communities in multiple volunteer organizations and/or on township boards or committees. This person has demonstrated a long time dedication and devotion to the community. v Good Neighbor Award – This award is to recognize a business, property owner or organization which through property improvements, or the implementation of a plan, has enhanced the beauty of community. This can be for a property’s aesthetic enhancement or for the thoughtful conservation of the community’s natural resources, resulting in a positive contribution to the over all life in our community.

Getting Graphic The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey presents “Getting Graphic: Novels, Memoirs & Comics.” The December 2 event will feature graphic novelists and comic book artists showcasing and discussing their work, offering workshops and book signings, and selling merchandise. The event was conceived in conjunction with the exhibition Drawing it Out, currently on display in the Eisenberg Gallery at the Art Center. “In delving into the genre of graphic novels and memoirs, our staff and artists discovered so many interesting and unique stories,” said Sarah Walko, Director of Programs at the Visual Arts Center. “We wanted to create an event where the audience would be exposed to as many of these works as we could manage and could then meet the artists themselves.” The event will take place at the Art Center on Saturday, December 2, from 12-5pm and is free for all ages. Tables will be set up throughout the building for the entirety of the event featuring books and merchandise by graphic novelists, memoirists, and comic book artists and food and drinks will be available from The Rolling Pita. Following a brief introduction to the event, two artist talks will take place in the main gallery: Howard Saunders and Julia Alekseyva will discuss their respective work from 2-2:30pm and Darrell Goza and Dana Walwrath will do the same from 4-4:30pm. Opera at Florham continues to celebrate its 35th Anniversary season with its Holiday Program “Mingle and Jingle” at Lenfell Hall, The Mansion, Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ on Sunday Dec. 3rd at 2 pm. This year the Chorus of Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, will join Opera at Florham’s singers: Theron Cromer, tenor, and Daniela Di Pasquale, soprano, accompanied by Mary Pinto, noted vocal coach. It will be an afternoon of traditional holiday music and song concluding with a sing-along with the audience. The venue, Lenfell Hall (located in Hennessy Hall), was the drawing room of the Vanderbilt-Twombly family’s gilded-age estate when they lived in the 100-room mansion.

Lenfell Hall is handicap accessible and free van shuttle service from parking lots will be available to our attendees. The FDU Chorus will render all three numbers in a cappella arrangements of “Angels We Have Heard on High” (Robert Shaw), “Shabbat Shalom” (Allen Cohen), and “He’s Gone Away” (Edmund Najera), under the baton of Director of Music Program, Dr. Allen Cohen, Professor of Music. Theron Cromer and Daniela Di Pasquale will offer a selection of traditional carols, religious and other beautiful holiday duets with holiday medleys. Members of the audience will be invited to the stage to mingle with Theron and Daniela by joining them in singing some carols. The second half will include Mary playing some jazz themed- holiday music and ending in a singalong with the audience. For the past 2 years Lyric soprano, Daniela Di Pasquale, has been performing in concerts as a special guest vocalist with two-time Emmy nominated tenor, Alfio. Recent concerts and opera events include “Magic and Mayhem” with The Cantanti Project; Lighthouse Opera Company as Zerlina in Don Giovanni; Summer Scenes Program as Despina in Così fan tutte; and Virtu in L’incoronazione di Poppea with the NYC Lyric Opera. Ms. Di Pasquale studied at the Eastman School of Music and received a Bachelor of Music Degree with a concentration in Vocal Performance at Montclair State University. Theron Cromer, tenor, a recent graduate of the Voice Performance program at Montclair State has performed in various operas there including the title role in Albert Herring, Dialogues of the Carmelites, Il Cambiale di Matrimonio and as a graduate, the lead role in Donizetti’s, Il Giovedi Grasso. Wallace Adams-Riley to speak on History and Reconciliation Calvary Church, Summit will host the second part of its Advent series titled “Proclaiming The Good News through Diplomacy and Reconciliation”. The Rev. Wallace Adams-Riley will speak on his current ministry of speaking, teaching and writing, asking how the Gospel calls us to reckon with our history in relationship to slavery and race. Wallace formally served for nine years as rector of historic St. Paul’s Church, Richmond, a church once known as the “Cathedral of the Confederacy.” During his tenure in 2015, the Church inventoried the Confederate symbols in the church and took efforts to remove images of the Confederate flag from within its walls. Wallace, a direct descendent of eleven Confederate soldiers, has discerned a call to grapple with that history and to help and encourage others to do so, for the sake of reconciliation. Dec 17 The Pipes of Christmas The Pipes of Christmas will celebrate its nineteenth season with performances in New Jersey and New York this December. The holiday favorite opens on Saturday, December 16 at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at 921 Madison Avenue (at 73rd Street) for a 3PM performance. The concert moves across the Hudson River on Sunday, December 17 to Central Presbyterian Church located at 70 Maple Street in Summit, NJ with performances at 2 and 7PM. For those weary of the ceaseless stream of secular seasonal music from department stores to TV, the Pipes of Christmas offers a spiritual and traditional take on the season that connects concertgoers to the holiday in a fresh, meaningful way. The show features tunes such as O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Joy to the World, and Amazing Grace, all performed live on pipes and drums, harp and fiddle, and organ and brass. Not only does the performance define Christmas cheer, but also it inspires those of Celtic descent to retrace and reconnect to their ancestry. The 2017 production will also mark the world premiere of “Beautiful Things,” an original composition by acclaimed Celtic harper Cormac de Barra. The piece commemorates the vision of the Virgin Mary at Knock Cathedral in Ireland in 1879. Earlier this year, the remains of the last remaining witness to the vision were reinterred at Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City from the pauper’s grave where he was laid to rest in 1934.

The concert presents the music of Christmas accompanied by readings taken from the Celtic literature of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Featured performers include James Robinson from the film “Braveheart,” New England fiddle champion Paul Woodiel, “Riverdance” uilleann piper and flutist Christopher Layer, Gaelic Mod champion harpist Jennifer Port of Golspie, Scotland, and the Pipe Major Kevin Ray Blandford Memorial Pipe Band from Redlands, CA. Proceeds Support Scholarships and More Proceeds from the concert support an extensive music scholarship program, which includes the Carol Hassert Memorial Fine Arts Scholarship at Summit High School as well as annual gifts to the National Piping Centre and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (both located in Glasgow, Scotland) the Gaelic College of Nova Scotia and Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas. Proceeds also support the Society’s sponsorship of the US National Scottish Harp Championship, the Gaelic Literature Competition at the Royal National Mod and an annual academic research prize at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland’s Gaelic college on the Isle of Skye. The Spelling Bee fills up quickly. Only the registration forms of the first 70 students will be accepted. A waiting list will also be maintained.

Applications will be taken by online registration between DECEMBER 1 1 th and DECEMBER 15th, 2017 and acceptance will be based on the date and time the form was submitted. Registration forms submitted prior to Monday, December 11th, 2017 will be disqualified. Accepted contestants will be confirmed via email by December 22, 2017.
