This station has a lot of history, but it’s so much more than just a local place to fill up your vehicle. For the 56th consecutive year, the Santa Claus Shop will open for invited area residents to enjoy complimentary holiday shopping. The shop serves more than 400 low-income families and senior citizens from Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights and other local communities.

Families will be offered shopping hours during the first week of December.

The shop is chaired by Summit residents Sarah Fitzsimmons, Kristen Goldman, Kiera Mathey and Katie Mucci, and co-chaired by Elizabeth Somerlot, Katie Orr, Alison MacMillan and Michelle Kalmanson. The Santa Claus Shop exists solely on donations and volunteers. With monetary donations from area residents, local organizations and businesses, the shop’s volunteers purchase gifts that allow less fortunate neighbors to experience the joy of holiday giving without financial burden.

Checks can be made payable to SHIP, with Santa Claus Shop noted on the memo line, and mailed to the Santa Claus Shop, PO Box 119, Summit 07902. The ability to make an online donation is available at summitsantaclausshop.com.

For details or to get involved, visit the website or follow on Facebook at Santa Claus Shop - Summit, NJ and Instagram@santa_claus_shop_summit

At that time some of these folks began gravitating towards the idea of starting a service organization. A few had sprung up over the preceding several decades. One in particular caught their fancy – Rotary!

The Summit men (yes, they were all men, but that changed, eventually) asked Rotary how to organize and establish a Club, and on 22 October 1922, The Summit Rotary was born. There were twenty-five members and they held an inaugural dinner at, where else, the Canoe Brook Country Club.

We met at many places over the years including the YMCA, the old New Hampshire house, several different banks, the old Squire restaurant and for roughly four decades, the Grand Summit Hotel, and now, at Christ Church. In 1972, the Summit Rotary Club opened our doors to our neighboring town and became the Summit/New Providence Rotary. If it was Monday, it was Rotary.

Along the way, we began to do what we were designed to do –service to the community. Indeed, Rotary’s motto is simply, “Service Above Self.”

In 1926 we started what is today our signature success, The Scholarship Program. The first recipient was a young senior from Summit High School, Philip Dean. Mr. Dean received $100 and matriculated at Colgate. Thirty years later, Philip Dean became Mayor of Summit. Inflation adjusted we have provided deserving students with over two million dollars of financial aid towards their higher education.

While we are proud of our scholarships, we have done a lot more. Through Rotary International, our governing body, we have fully participated in RI’s extraordinary effort to eliminate polio. About twenty years ago we began participating in something we call the Dictionary Project. This effort supplies specially designed

dictionaries to every third grader in the Summit and New Providence school districts.

Also, around twenty years ago we undertook a major international project. One of our members, Augustine “Gus” Pushparaj, came from a small and poor village in southern India. Gus wanted to help a local religious group build a new school in his home village. He rallied the Rotarians who raised money which the Rotary District and Rotary International supplemented and the facility was built. Just prior to his passing, Gus was working on a project to build a new library for the school. Gus’ wife, Dr. Neela Pushparaj, finished the project in the spring of this year thanks to a $20,000 grant to outfit and furnish the new building.

Along the way we have engaged in many other civic projects some of which include holding a bike safety program, volunteering at other community services programs such as sponsoring the Interact Club for High School Students, Meals on Wheels, Spend-A-Day at SAGE, work at the Community Food Bank, Bingo nights at the Lyons VA, sponsoring the school systems Red Ribbon winners as well as many of their parents and teachers at a special luncheon and providing a special scholarship for the Student/Partner Alliance, along with many many more.

But we’re not done. There’s lots on the drawing board, but there’s not enough room to tell the full story. We have done a lot to be proud of in the past one hundred years, but we’re not looking back, there is always more to be done and hopefully, Rotary will be there to provide

On Saturday, October 22 members and friends of the Rotary Club of Summit and New Providence will gather at Canoe Brook Country Club to celebrate the 100th Birthday of the organizations founding in Summit. SENIOR BUS IN BERKELEY HEIGHTS BACK ON THE ROAD THIS AUTUMN

The wheels on the bus are going round and round once again for senior citizens in Berkeley Heights.

After a Covid-related hiatus and time spent finding a new driver, the 22-passenger bus, equipped with a wheelchair lift, is taking residents to play bingo, to run errands and on longer monthly trips.

The service picks up seniors every Monday at 11 a.m. after bingo for shopping and lunch, and longer trips are offered one Friday each month. Organizers said the schedules are subject to change as interest and demand from potential riders is assessed.

To get a ride to bingo, call the Township Senior Hotline at 908-464-2700, then enter 2229. This is also the number to call to reserve a spot for postbingo shopping and lunch. Leave a message at least a week in advance with your name, phone number, address and which trip/s you wish to take.

For general information about the bus, call the Berkeley Heights Recreation Department at 908-464-0550, Option 3.

In addition, the Senior Club offers longer trips to Atlantic City. For details or to reserve a spot, call Shirley at 908-322-8391.

Bus availability may expand this fall with additional days of the week and more trips, depending on interest from members of the township’s senior community.

With an early October Zoom seminar of free suicide prevention training open to all New Providence residents completed, a waitlist for future sessions is being compiled. Email npmhae@gmail. com with questions or to be included.

Training is offered by the New Providence Mental Health Advocacy & Education Committee (MHAE), in partnership with the Mental Health Association of N.J., in response to suicide being a leading cause of death in New Jersey for people ages 10 to 34.

To date, nearly 60 borough coaches, parents and youth leaders have enrolled, representing organizations ranging from the Soccer Club and the Municipal Alliance to the Rec Department and Rebels Lacrosse.

“We have received excellent feedback,” said Debbie Merrick, committee chair for the MHAE. “Many said they learned valuable new information about how to respond to those in crisis and would recommend this training to parents, teachers and anyone who works with our local youth. This course goes hand in hand with the Lifelines program being rolled out to teachers and students in the district. It will strengthen our ability as a community to help safeguard our youth.”

The training is called QPR, and focuses on how to question, persuade and refer someone who may be suicidal. It focuses upon common causes of suicidal behavior, how to get help for yourself, identifying warning signs of suicide and how to get assistance for someone in crisis.

60 YEARS OF SERVICE HONORED DURING SUMMIT ‘SQUAD MONTH’

Mayor Nora Radest proclaimed September “Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad Month.” The mayor highlighted the squad’s 60 years of service to the residents of Summit and surrounding communities.

“The dedication and hard work of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad members provide quality care at no cost to the patient or taxpayer, saving the City of Summit approximately $2 million per year,” Mayor Radest said. “Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad members, all of whom are volunteers, should not go unrecognized.”

During 2021, the squad answered more than 2,200 emergency calls. Services are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. In addition, squad volunteers regularly provide non-emergency coverage at community events.

Mayor Radest asked all citizens to join her in praising the volunteers and lending the squad their financial support.

The squad has launched its annual fund drive campaign. The organization is funded solely from private donations and does not receive financial support from the City of Summit. To donate, visit summitems.org/donate/.

When she was 24, Karen Stenstrom was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease and told, “Some day, you’ll need a transplant.”

Fast forward about three decades. That day is here.

Karen is now Officer Karen Sauers of the Summit Police Department, and the city’s first responders have banded together to launch an effort to find their colleague a living donor, as, Officer Sauers noted, the “chances of me surviving longer are greater” via that method.

Members of the officer’s family are not a match, so the search has gone regional, promoted by organizations that include the Summit Police Department, the Fire Department and the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, on which Officer Sauers once volunteered.

Police Chief Steve Zagorski described the officer as “one of the kindest and most positive individuals I know,” and referred to her “distinguished career” with the city as one of the many reasons he and his co-workers are willing to do “everything possible” to help her in her quest for a donor.

In addition to launching announcements via local news sources and through social media,

city officials including Mayor Nora Radest, who described Officer Sauers as “hard-working, genuine, kind and sweet,” set up a table at Summit’s weekly farmers’ market to spread the word in person. “She’s a giver, not an asker,” the mayor said of the officer, but there is no shortage of folks willing to do the asking on her behalf.

Officer Sauers is a patient at Cooper Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where the Living Donor Institute provides a confidential online history questionnaire for potential donors. Visit cbmclivingdonor.org.

“I love my job,” said Officer Sauers about serving the community where she grew up and is a product of the public school system, serving as co-captain of women’s lacrosse as a Summit High Hilltopper before graduating with the Class of 1989.

Her husband Jon also serves on the Summit Police Department, and the couple co-parent Andy, 20, and have twins, 13-year-old Tommy and Maggie.

“I have young children,” Officer Sauer said, “and I want to live to see them get married and graduate from college and move on.”
