RECALLED AS KIND, GENEROUS SOUL WHO WILL BE MISSED BY MANY IN SUMMIT

O

n Aug. 31, long-time Summit resident, businessman, downtown visionary and philanthropist Hugo M. Pfaltz died at age 87. His wife of 62 years, Marilyn, penned this essay and contributed it to The Collection magazine: The April 27, 1953, issue of Life Magazine featured a small liberal arts college in upstate New York, Hamilton College.

Within the article there was a photo spread of 12 students, with a caption reflecting each personality. Hugo M. “Tug” Pfaltz was identified as the “Individualist” -- “Majoring in Geology with plans to go to South Africa and study the effect of gold mining.

Perhaps to live there.”

His profile did not change over the years. He always traveled with a mineral hammer just in case an interesting quartz or rock turned up. With the family gang, he spent many hours waistdeep in mountain streams panning for gold.

Not many would persuade his new bride to take a 14,000 mile driving trip from New Jersey to Mexico and back, tenting along the way. The family became accustomed to strange pets -- Ali Macaw, Ziggy the goat, Lizzie the iguana and Oscar the bearded dragon, not to mention his rescues of an occasional turtle or possum or hawk. His conception of a backyard greenhouse with a koi pond was a beloved meditation spot.

One fine day, Tug and son Bob went off to explore the mines near Sparta. Early in the afternoon, the front door bell rang.

I was not expecting anyone, so I cautiously opened the door.

Standing on the stoop staring inquisitively at my presence was a goat. Needless to say, I knew in a flash how he got there. There was much laughter coming from the bushes.

In spite of my protests, of course we kept him…living happily in the backyard.

Along the years Tug took up plane gliding, ultra-lighting and windsurfing. One Christmas you might have spotted him waving from his red Honda Civic wearing a Santa Claus hat or perhaps a sighting at Easter in his PT Cruiser, which was adorned with two ears and a cotton tail.

He has always walked to his own drumbeat, a trailblazer in so many aspects of his life: travel adventures, politics, the law and his vision for downtown Summit. A kind and generous soul whose family, extended family, longtime friends and associates were his treasured life support.

eople often take for granted the skills necessary to live a successful, independent life. But lowincome families don’t always have opportunities to develop these tools.

Summit-headquartered Family Promise, the national leader addressing the crisis of family homelessness, has created an educational workshop series in its Union County program that helps struggling families hone skills critical for long-term success. Classes range from practical skills for parents like basic home maintenance, budgeting and CPR/first aid to kid-focused sessions like bike riding lessons and career exploration.

The home maintenance course covers topics like household safety, basic repairs and tenancy best practices.

A financial management class covers budgeting issues. There are nutrition, first aid and health and wellness workshops, as well as a session that addresses the emotional impact of homelessness.

“While we’re teaching skills, we’re also looking at the subtle implications behind those skills, like how it feels to open a bill when you’re deep in debt,” said Geleen Donovan, Family Promise Union County executive director. “Most of us develop these skills and any coping mechanisms without realizing it. But struggling families are more focused on day-to-day survival than creating a strong foundation to build upon.”

The workshops are primarily led by individuals who have volunteered to share their expertise with families.

“Our volunteers are the backbone of our work,” said Ms. Donovan. “They walk alongside families to make sure they succeed.”

Founded in Summit in 1988, Family Promise is comprised of more than 200 affiliates across the country and engages 200,000 volunteers. Its approach to addressing homelessness keeps families together and gives them the skills and tools to succeed independently. The organization serves nearly 100,000 individuals each year. LIFE SKILLS LESSONS OFFERED -- Nutrition and healthy eating habits are among the topics covered by courses offered by Summit-based Family Promise to those who benefit from its programs. Other classes cover first aid and CPR, basic home maintenance and budgeting, while children can enroll to learn bike riding skills and about career exploration. Most classes are taught by volunteers. Adults and teens are invited to an illustrated lecture about some of the most haunted places in New Jersey and New York City on Thursday, Oct. 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Summit Free Public Library, 75 Maple St., in the lower level program room.

Speaker L’Aura Hladik Hoffman will highlight sites including the Spy House, the Burlington County Prison Museum, The Hermitage and the Bernardsville Library. Ms. Hoffman is the founder and director of the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society and author of “Ghosts of the Poconos,” “Ghosthunting New Jersey” and “Ghosthunting New York City.”

at Block and Nancy Ori, who is a resident of Berkeley Heights, have an exhibit with the theme “Landscapes of Union County” on view through Nov. 1 at the Freeholder’s Gallery on the sixth floor of the Union County Administration Building, 10 Elizabethtown Plaza, Elizabeth. Gallery hours are 9 to 5 weekdays. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Ms. Block has spent most of her life in Union County.

She said, “I have gotten tremendous solace and pleasure from visiting the many parks in our county and photographing them to use as references for my mixed media collages, which have become my seminal works of art. I use patterned papers that represent what I see at these locations. My primary source of inspiration is the blossoming of the

cherry trees in Warinanco Park in Roselle…I finish each collage by adding pieces of my reference photos, making the work appear somewhat surreal and making each piece entirely self-referential.”

Ms. Ori has been teaching and exhibiting her fine art photographs for decades and in 2004 was honored with the Woman of Excellence in Arts and Humanities Award from the Commission on Advocacy for Women and the Union County Freeholders. Her photographs reveal a love of light, shadow and form in natural and man-made settings.

“I feel that continuing to exhibit these images can make a difference in our community by opening the eyes of residents to the many wonderful natural resources we have in Union County,” Ms. Ori said.

“The county fathers had such foresight to fight and establish the Union County Park System in the 1920s.”

The Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, part of the Department of Parks and Recreation, coordinates the exhibits displayed at the Freeholder’s Gallery.

FOUR CENTURIES FEATURES FREE ADMISSION TO COUNTY’S NOTED HISTORIC LANDMARKS visitors can tour a 19th century Gothic cottage and see the last remaining stone springhouse in the county.

ore than 30 of the region’s historic sites will be highlighted – and will offer free admission – during Union County’s annual Four Centuries in a Weekend open house, set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20, from noon to 5 p.m. each day.

Two Berkeley Heights landmarks will welcome guests. The Deserted Village, on Cataract Hollow Road off Glenside Avenue, dates to 1845. There are 10 still-existing buildings, plus numerous archeological remains, and the site is now nestled within the Watchung Reservation. At the Littell-Lord Farmstead on Horseshoe Road, home of the Berkeley Heights Historical Society,

In addition, for only the second year, open by reservation will be Nokia Bell Labs on Mountain Avenue. Researchers there have developed innovations including the laser, the solar cell and radio astronomy, and eight Nobel Prizes have been awarded for work done on the campus.

In New Providence, the historical society’s Salt Box Museum on Springfield Avenue was created when two separate houses were joined in the mid-19th century, and today the home features furnishings from that era.

In Summit, the Reeves-Reed Arboretum on Hobart Avenue is the county’s only arboretum, and its 13.5 acres boast public gardens and a former private home now on the National Register of Historic Places. Open year-round, the arboretum is a major educational resource for the region. The 1908 Colonial Revival-style Twin Maples on Springfield Avenue was a private home until 1949, when it became headquarters for the Fortnightly Club, a charity dedicated to community service and outreach.

The 1741 Carter House on Butler Parkway, home to the Summit Historical Society, is the

oldest known building remaining in the city. It boasts a local history museum and archives that feature maps, photos, postcards, yearbooks and even a 1920s Summit fire truck. The Summit Playhouse on New England Avenue began its life as the town’s original library from 1891-1911.

Visitors can tour the theater, view an historic painted mural and enjoy a water fountain from the Metropolitan Opera House.

Union County history trading cards are available at all sites to visitors of all ages.

The program, begun in 2017, has continued to expand, and new cards are introduced regularly. Among current cards are ones that feature Alexander Hamilton, Virginia Apgar, Bell Labs, the Battle of Short Hills, General Motors, Langston Hughes, William “Bull” Halsey Jr. and Margaret Bourke-White.

In addition, Union County is now part of the Passport to Your National Parks Program, and enthusiasts can have their passports stamped when visiting select Four Centuries sites, those that have connections to the Revolutionary War era. Each qualified site has its own stamp that recognizes its inclusion in the National Parks Services’ Crossroads of the Revolution National Heritage Area.

serendipitous moment at the end of a school field trip resulted in an honor for a longtime photography teacher at Summit High School. Don Standing, a native of Summit, had one of his photos earn a place in the finals of the 2019 International Street Photography Awards.

The awards are part of the StreetFoto San Francisco Festival, a oncea-year gathering of street photographers from around the world.

It was the absolute last frame on the roll," said Mr. Standing, who used a Leica M3 with a 50mm lens and Kodak Tri-X 400 film to capture the image, which features a man at the top of a wide outdoor staircase looking down upon his own long shadow and a group of children beneath him. Mr. Standing shoots exclusively on film.
