Oratory Union County Champs !
T
he Oratory Prep Mock Trial team captured the Union County Championship for the 5th year in a row in January when they defeated Bruriah High School. The Defense team made up of attorneys Junior Justin Meisner and Freshman Nick Sannito and witnesses Sophomore Ryan Briggs, Senior Charlie Arnedt and Junior Justin Rodriguez defeated Bruriah’s prosecution team. The team moves on the State Regionals in New Brunswick. The team is coached by Bill Martin and attorney advisers Bob Scirocco and John Meehan and OP alums Scott Turtur ‘13, Connor Briggs ‘15 and Joe Bizub ‘15.

ary Poppins will fly onto the SHS stage March 2-6 bringing a magical “Roof-Raising, Toe-Tapping, High-Flying Extravaganza!” Featuring an irresistible story and unforgettable songs from one of the most popular Disney films of all time, Mary Poppins is a “practically perfect” musical for the entire family. Beyond its wild special effects, breath-taking dance numbers, and unforgettable characters, Mary Poppins teaches children of all ages to value the important things in life: family, friendship, imagination, and that “Anything Can Happen if You Let It.” Performances run Wednesday and Thursday, March 2 & 3 at 6:00pm; Friday and Saturday, March 4 & 5 at 7:30 pm; and Sunday, March 6 at 2 pm. Tickets are also available for a Jolly Holiday Character Tea on March 6 at 12:30 pm. Show tickets are $13 for students and seniors and $16 for adults and can be purchased online at www.showtix4u.com. Adding Warmth to Oversized Rooms Easily and Successfully Does your home have one or more overly large living spaces that just don’t seem to be as inviting and cozy as other rooms within your home? Even if you enjoy having such an expansive area, you might still be wondering if your interior designer can assist you in adding the warmth that this space currently lacks. Fortunately, it is quite simple to do so, particularly if your designer is experienced in designing large rooms. Choosing Rich, Dark Colors to Create Warmth Darker colors are known for their ability to infuse an inviting sense of cordiality to any living space, particularly if they are chosen for walls and ceilings. Choosing solid coloring rather than tiny prints or patterns typically works better to minimize a space. Offset the dark tones with lighter hues for crown molding and trim. Furnishings (furniture and carpeting) should also make use of rich, deep tones with large prints that optimize the coziness of the room. Using Furniture Arrangements to Fill the Space Choose oversized pieces of furniture to create the illusion that the space is sized normally, enhancing the sense of warmth that you’ve created with your coloring selections. Use tall pieces for rooms with high ceilings and wide pieces for rooms featuring expansive borders. Clustering your furniture to create individualized areas within the room also assists in generating a space that is welcoming in appearance. Framing an Open Area If you are trying to add warmth to an open area of the home that serves as the landing zone for a living and dining area or some other combination, speak with your designer about the possibility of framing the dividing line between the two. Adding framework at the ceiling in the form of an arch that separates the two spaces instills the area with a clear sense of demarcation that enhances the existing warmth and coziness that you’ve created. Rely on Your Instincts as Well as Those of Your Interior Designer If the room feels cozy to you, then it probably is. Choose accessories that accentuate the primary colors in your design scheme. The key is to include items that invite the eyes to look and the heart to feel. NEW GROWTH Bent-Wood Sculptures W
estchester artist, Susan Manspeizer, with a career spanning three decades, has produced an exhibition, NEW GROWTH, celebrating nature’s life-affirming vitality and maturity, characterized by vibrant, deftly-formed bent-wood sculptures of color, beauty, form and grace. A gardener as well, Manspeizer “likes the process of living, of plants going from the bud of a flower to maturity and eventually decay. We are constantly growing and reinventing ourselves….leaving behind something in order to move forward in life.” In the early ‘80s, after years of painting figurative imagery, Manspeizer freed her line from the canvas. Her sculptures are made of wood, and this once-living material is repurposed - transformed and given new life. She bends and coaxes the wood into seemingly impossibly folded and looping rhythmic constructions of saturated hues and undulating contours, and the finished pieces, whether free-standing or wall-hung, seem to soar in space. NEW GROWTH: bent-wood sculptures by Susan Manspeizer, opens at the Wisner House Gallery at the Reeves Reed Arboretum on Sunday, February 21, with a public reception from 2 to 4 pm, and will run through May 8. All the works are for sale, and the artist will donate 30% of all purchases to Reeves-Reed Arboretum.
AARP Tax-Aide Program S
AGE Eldercare is currently accepting appointments for the AARP Tax-Aide Program; pictured are Frank Novak of Short Hills and Monika Mangan of Morristown, two of the volunteer tax preparers from AARP. On Thursdays from February 11 through April 14 between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, older adults can come to 290 Broad Street in Summit to obtain free tax counseling and preparation as part of an AARPsponsored service. IRS-trained volunteer tax preparers from AARP will be available on an appointment-only basis to assist middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those who are 60 years and older. Public Foundation Awards A Record Sum awarded during the year. During 2015, seventeen community and civic agencies were awarded a total of $197,350. Among the agencies receiving grants were the Connection, Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad, Summit Junior League, Bridges Outreach, and the Community FoodBank of NJ.
A
t its winter meeting, the Summit Area Public Foundation awarded the highest total amount of grants in its history, capping a year in which it also awarded more money than ever before. Awarding $312,520 in grants during the winter round, the foundation brought its 2015 total to $585,614. In addition, $54,500 in scholarships were
Ten agencies providing services to children and adults with special needs received a total of $178,944. These agencies included Summit Speech School, Our House, the PG Chambers and Winston schools, and Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey. A total of $72,500 in grants were awarded to healthcare providers, including Trinitas Hospital, Enright Melanoma Foundation, and Planned Parenthood. SAGE Eldercare in Summit received a total of $51,000 for its program to provide guidance on “aging in place” for families of elderly residents who want to remain in their homes.
Arts organizations received a total of $19,700, and four education programs received a total of $45,700, much of it directed at arts-oriented education efforts. Summit Area Public Foundation (SAPF) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization based in Summit. It fosters philanthropy in the Summit area by identifying local needs and offering donors flexible ways to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors. Founded in 1972, Summit Area Public Foundation now has about $16 million in assets. SAPF grants come from the foundation’s endowment. All grants are competitive and limited to tax-exempt non-profit agencies serving the greater Summit area. Grants are awarded by the board of trustees. Ateliers 113 Opens A
teliers 113 (formerly, Elle Coiffures Salon) recently opened in downtown Summit. After several months of extensive remodeling, a Grand Opening Party was held to celebrate the occasion. Mayor Nora Radest cut the ribbon to officially open the salon. Nearly 100 people attended the event, including Chamber of Commerce Board member Marcella Gencarelli and Executive Director Karen Hadley Ateliers 113 is owned by Michelle Azouz, an expert colorist and stylist. Michelle brings with her close to 25 years of experience working in salons located in both Europe and America. She has also won several awards in international competitions. Michelle is very proud to be part of the Summit business community.

Kathryn Louise Tully, daughter of William and Maureen Tully of Summit, was married on October 31, 2015 to Daniel Stewart Magee, son of Ian and Isobel Magee of St. Ives England. The ceremony was held at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Summit with Monsignor Donald Guenther officiating. Dinner and dancing followed at Canoe Brook Country Club. The bride is a graduate of Fairfield University and is employed as Regional Client Manager for Reval, based in London. The groom is a graduate of Nottingham Trent University and is employed by Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd. as Project Quantity Surveyor. Following a honeymoon in the Pacific Northwest, the couple has returned to their home in Nottingham, England.
