If you’re looking for a fun way to ring in the holidays with your family, and enjoy a delicious meal, reserve a place at Winberie’s Restaurant in downtown Summit on either Sunday, December 15 or Sunday, December 22. From 10:30 AM to 2 PM, Santa will be “in residence” at Winberie’s where he will greet all the children, hand out treats, and pose for photos.

The full Brunch menu that will be offered includes both hot and cold items – scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages, French toast, waffles, cold salads, breads and bagels, fruits, desserts, and more. The “kid-friendly” menu also features cookies and milk for Santa. For parents, complimentary Bloody Marys and Mimosas will be offered.

Seatings are available every half hour between the designated Brunch hours of 10:30 and 2.

Under the direction of Maria Alexander – an NSCA certified personal trainer and exercise physiologist with over 10 years experience and a Masters in Physical Education (concentration in exercise science) – Wellness Studio M provides individualized training programs that strengthen core muscles in the abdomen and lower back, and increase cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular power and strength, and flexibility.

Unlike traditional training methods, functional movement training utilizes fitness tools like ropes, sand bags, kettle bells, rings, straps, bands, medicine balls, BOSU balls and YOUR body to maximize your workout. Wellness Studio M’s unique functional training programs are developed to help any body perform daily tasks better with reduced risk of injury – whether you are a competitive athlete, fitness enthusiast or just starting out. Wellness Studio M provides fitness assessments and creates custom programs based on each client’s needs and goals.

Happy Holidays, Happy Shopping

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, except for under my Christmas tree. Even though I have carefully made my list, I have yet to buy any presents. Don’t get me wrong; I love the holiday season. My house is decked out in reds, greens and golds, holiday songs are playing on the radio, and batches of reindeer cookies are cooling on the counter. However, the thought of joining the throngs of people at the mall vying for parking spots and hustling and bustling at full speed through the stores is making me feel like the Grinch, before he turned nice.

Hmm, maybe I will do all my shopping closer to home this year. Downtown Summit is filled with stores offering a wide variety of items, and I know I will get personal service and assistance if needed. I’m sure I can get everything on my list, including many unique and interesting gifts.

I gather my list and my purse, and head out the door to my car. Even though it’s early in the season, there is a hint of snow in the air. Now that would really get me in the holiday mood. I arrive in town and park my car in one of the municipal lots. I’m glad it’s centrally located so I can easily make trips back to the car to unload my goodies. I get out my list and I’m on my way. As I walk along the sidewalks, I admire the wreaths hanging from the lampposts. In the evenings these are lit up and really give Summit a festive look. I also see that Santa is arriving in town, and the kids will line up and excitedly tell him about all the things they hope to find under the tree come Christmas morning. Speaking of presents under the tree, I better get moving.

My first stop is the wine shop to pick up some things for all my wine-loving family and friends. I find not only great wines, but interesting corkscrews, beautiful decanters, and fancy wine glasses as well. As I stroll through, I am crossing people off my list. I even have some baskets made up so I will have less to wrap. While I’m here, I might as well pick up some additional bottles for my own holiday parties and get-togethers. Since these packages are heavy, I arrange to have them delivered to my house.

Now I’m off to the toy store. There are lots of good little boys and girls on my list. And this store has many fun and original playthings that I know will bring smiles to their faces.

As I come out of the store, my arms are loaded down with shopping bags. I’m glad the parking lot is on the way to my next stop. When I’m finished unloading the bags into the trunk, I cross off quite a few more names.

Since there are a few fashionistas on my list, I shop in some of the many clothing stores in town. I buy men’s clothes in one, women’s clothes in another, and also find some really cute outfits for teens and kids. I will include a toy with each child’s outfit, which should make both the parents and the kids happy.

Before stopping to get a bite to eat, I browse through a pet store for the pet lovers I know, a hardware store for the do-it-yourselfers, and a craft store for the creative people on my list. I am also able to buy some cards and wrapping paper here as well. After unloading these purchases into my car, I go in search of a hearty meal to sustain me through my next few stops. As I relax and eat my soup and hot open sandwich, I notice a few snowflakes coming down. How beautiful it looks as it covers the town in a white sparkling blanket!

I bundle myself back up, and walk down the street to visit the chocolate shop.

Everything looks and smells so wonderful that my mouth is watering, and the packaging alone makes me want to buy out the entire store. I’m glad I just ate, or I would be in big trouble. There are holiday candies in all shapes and sizes, some solid and others filled, and I look forward to stuffing these into some lucky recipients’ stockings. I just have to make sure I don’t eat it all before the holiday arrives. As I’m getting ready to walk out the door, I can’t resist buying a little snowman-shaped chocolate to eat on the way to my next destination. Delicious!

I arrive next at the cheese store, where I find a delectable array of fine cheeses and specialty foods. I order some things to pick up closer to the holiday for the people on my list who are real foodies. They not only love to eat, but also like to try new and different things that regular supermarkets don’t carry. I also place an order for my own holiday entertaining needs.

Next, I stop in some of the many restaurants in town to buy gift certificates. Along with a bottle of wine, this combination will make a perfect gift for the people on my list who enjoy going out to dinner.

I can’t believe I am almost done with my holiday shopping! I will pop into a few of the salons and spas for more gift certificates, and then I can head over to the Village Green for the annual tree lighting. What a stress-free season this is turning out to be! Happy Holidays!

Summit Educational Foundation Holds Partners in Education Event

The Summit Educational Foundation (SEF) recently held its annual Partners In Education Fundraising Evening in a Summit home. The event was chaired by Jennifer Anderson, with committee members Mary Beth Driscoll, Nancy Elia, Sharon French (host along with her husband Terry Haggerty), Anna Guttilla, Betsy Macpherson, Sue Thatch and Nicole Vigliotta. In attendance were Dr. Nathan Parker, Superintendent of Summit Public Schools, members of the Summit Board of Education, and several faculty and staff members.

SEF raises funds which go to support grants, submitted by both teachers and parents, which enrich the curriculum. (See article elsewhere in In the Schools.) Laura Schaffer, President of SEF, welcomed the crowd with “Partners Night is really a thank you to those who have made a decision to invest big in public school education in Summit. So many of Summit’s teachers are truly inspired educators and I can’t think of a better investment than in them and our children who learn from them.”

Kent Place Upper School Presents Our Lady of Route 52

Kent Place Upper School students recently presented their fall performance of the premiere of Kate Aspengren’s new play Our Lady of Route 52. The play was performed on stage in the Hyde and Watson Theatre on campus and Drama Department Chair Robert Pridham directed.

The theater program at Kent Place is committed to the production of musical and non-musical theater and maintains a special focus on the creation and performance of new plays. Guests were able to examine one of the new Node chairs which are part of the 21st Century Classroom arrangement installed in all language arts classrooms at the Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School. Randy Wallock, seventh grade language arts teacher, showed a video that demonstrated the flexibility and collaboration-enhancing ability of the new classroom layout.

Loren MacTaggart, SHS special education teacher, demonstrated the new Spark Student Response System being used in the Special Education classroom and throughout the Social Studies Department. A trivia quiz was set up so that guests could experience how the system works. Also on display were Lego Machine Sets built by elementary students, literary magazines from SHS and LCJSMS, and iPads that SEF has funded.

Dr. Nathan Parker stated “Because of SEF, the children in this school district are the beneficiaries of incredible enrichment programs and we are grateful.”

Oak Knoll Community Gives Back on Annual School-wide Service Day For the second consecutive year, both the Upper and Lower Schools at Oak Knoll School recently participated in the annual Service Day. Students, faculty, and staff utilized their various talents to serve the community. Oak Knoll has been participating in Service Day since 2002. But service is something that Oak Knoll’s students pride themselves on doing year-round, even during their winter, spring, and summer breaks.

“Although many students participate in opportunities to serve others throughout the year, Service Day is a unique experience that allows all of the Upper School students to come together as one school community to serve others,” said Upper School theology teacher and Service Day organizer Stacy Nolan. “Building a day like this into the school day creates an opportunity for those to serve who would otherwise not be able to work with the organizations we help on this day.”

The SEF grant assisted in the funding and development and installation of a large-scale scientific analemmatic sundial on the blacktop near the school. As Artist Mackenzie explained at the assembly, the sundial will provide an opportunity for the students to better understand nature, the seasons, the earth, and the solar system in a hands-on manner.

Children will be able to casually interact with the sundial at recess, as well as use it in specific curricula across all grades. Students can all say they participated in the sundial’s creation as they helped to paint it during their art classes.

In The Communities Summit’s Village Green Undergoing Redevelopment Summit’s Village Green, encompassing four blocks in the downtown, is a green oasis in the middle of the City. It dates back to the 1920’s when the vision and generosity of the Bonnel and Mabie families created the cornerstone of the Village Green that served as a children’s playground. The Village Green extends from Summit Avenue on the east to Maple Street on the west and south from the train station and Railroad Avenue.

In the recent past, the Summit Area Development Corporation and the Summit Area Public Foundation teamed to provide the funding for a plan to redevelop the Village Green. Already completed are a new steel fence along Summit Avenue and the landscaped median strip on Broad Street. The Village Green Pedestrian Improvement Project has realigned and reconstructed walkways, improved lighting, upgraded ADA ramps, repaired curbs and added bicycle racks on the two northern quadrants. SADC has pledged $30,000 to kick off the funding for landscaping, including a sitting wall and benches. An additional $60,000 is needed to complete this

$500,000 project. A $2,500 contribution will give the donor the ability to name one of the benches.

Many people enjoy the “Hot Summer Nights” concerts and “Screen on the Green” on the Village Green during the summer. The Memorial Day Celebration and the awards ceremony after the P.A.L. Halloween Parade take place on the Green, as well as the Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony in December. A

beautiful section of the Village Green contains memorials to all of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Funding for the replacement of the Village Green trees lost to damaging storms also was provided by a $10,000 SADC grant.

As a 501(c) 3, SADC’s mission is to help beautify and care for our Village Green, Promenade Park and the pocket parks in the city. We now seek the public’s help to finish the work; contributions are greatly appreciated! All donations are tax-deductible and checks to SADC can be mailed to P.O. Box 299, Summit, NJ 07902.

Shop to Make a Difference at Egyptian Handcraft Sale The 8th annual Holiday Handcraft Sale returns to Summit on Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8, at the Colonial Crossroads Chapter of the American Red Cross, 695 Springfield Avenue in Summit.

With hours from 10 AM to 4 PM both days, there is ample time to shop and support this very worthwhile cause.

Funds raised from the sale of beautiful, handmade quilts, rugs, totes, greeting cards, paper goods, and unique holiday items go directly to Cairo to support the Zaballeen community of impoverished Christian families, providing training for the women and early education for their children. Unfortunately the turmoil in Egypt has closed down the traditional sales outlet in Cairo for these crafts, drastically affecting the income for the two schools where the women produce the goods. “Because of this situation, the public’s support

of the sale is more important than ever this season,” explained Marilyn Pfaltz, co-sponsor of the sale event.

by Marilyn and her Bryn Mawr College classmate, native Egyptian Suzan Habachy and her sister Nimet, a host on WQXR radio. The three women have taped a show called “Changing Lives – Dateline: Cairo” with Drew University Middle Eastern Studies Professor Chris Taylor that will air on HomeTowne TV. A non-profit called Hands Along the Nile was founded 20 years ago by the Habachy sisters to help the Zaballeen community, and their work has done tremendous good.

City of Summit Wins NJ Society of Municipal Engineers Award Summit’s Engineering Department has been recognized by the NJ Society of Municipal Engineers as a second place recipient in the Municipal Construction Management Projects “F” category. The award-winning project made substantial improvements to three Park & Shop lots on Deforest Avenue in Summit.

“We are thrilled to receive this award from the NJ Society of Municipal Engineers,” explained Summit Mayor Ellen Dickson. “Recognition for this vital infrastructure investment is important for the City. I would like to congratulate the entire project team for a job well done.”

Nominations Are in Order for “Tying the Community Together” The fourth annual “Tying the Communities Together” celebration and service awards dinner is set for Spring, 2014, and the Suburban Chamber of Commerce is looking for prominent individuals and businesses to be nominated by their peers, for their dedication and far-reaching activities on behalf of the communities the chamber serves, to receive the awards.

“We all know someone or a business that goes the extra distance to make life in our three towns of Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights that much better,” explained John Rosellini, Jr, Chamber Chairman. “We’d like to honor these people and businesses and recognize them for their outstanding service at our upcoming “Tying the Community Together” celebration, so we need you to nominate the people and businesses you think best exemplify the criteria below!” v Business of the Year Award – Seeks to recognize a business or business person who has operated a respected business in our communities for at least 5 years. Considerations should be given for outstanding practices, products and/or services and involvement in our communities by way of contributions to local programs, events and other services. v Beautification Award – Recognizes a person, business, property owner or organization which has made significant improvements to a site that enhances the appearance and general look of the property and the community. v Public Service Award – Honors an outstanding, well-rounded citizen who lives or works in our communities and has demonstrated exemplary services by way of volunteerism and community involvement. v Silver Service Award – Recognizes a private citizen or public servant who has served at least 25 years in multiple volunteer organizations and/or on community boards or committees, someone who has demonstrated a long-time dedication to the community. v Public Service Organization – Honors an organization which has consistently performed services within our communities and has achieved or carried out one or more outstanding events or projects during the previous year. v President’s Award – Presented as a special honor by the Chairman of the SCC to a person, business or organization that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in providing services to its surrounding communities.
