capital expenditures benefiting the needs of hundreds of thousands of children throughout New Jersey. “The children’s center is a project near and dear to our hearts,” said Harriet Donnelly, Hersh Foundation administrator. A $2.5 million pledge from the Nicholas J. and Anna K. Bouras Foundation funded the relocation of the Michael Gordon Reeves Pediatric Emergency Department, as well as additional adult emergency patient rooms.

“We are honored to at last be able to provide our young patients and their families with the highest quality of care in a space designed specifically for them,” said Stephanie Schwartz, president of Overlook Medical Center, who described the center as “one that truly compliments the experienced care team and advanced technology Celebrating the opening of the Hersh Children’s Center at Overlook were, from left, Clelia Biamonti, Executive Director, Overlook Foundation; that serve our patients.”

The Hersh Children’s Center is the latest phase of a plan to transform the hospital, which includes new

(formerly housed on Overlook’s sixth floor) and the Michael Gordon Reeves Pediatric Emergency Department for what hospital officials described as better coordinated care of patients ages 0-21. For patients who require a stay, the new inpatient unit offers sleep accommodations for parents, family lounges and a play area with skylights and windows. In addition, the new center includes nine inpatient rooms, including two isolation rooms and Liam’s Room for patients with serious chronic conditions or life-limiting illnesses; eight emergency department rooms staffed by pediatric emergency physicians, pediatric subspecialists and pediatric nurses; one flexible room for emergency department patients or inpatients; in-room accommodations for parents to stay overnight with their children; and numerous structural and design elements to enhance safety, comfort and security for patients and families. The center is funded in part by a $2 million grant from the Dorothy B. Hersh Foundation. Established in 1979 to fulfill the wishes of the late Ms. Hersh, the foundation provides grants for

structures, redesigned spaces and additional upgrades. Prior to the children’s center, Overlook opened its new employee parking garage, as well as the new Bouras Emergency Department entrance. Expanded wings on Overlook’s 7th and 8th floors were completed and opened in 2020, with the new 7th floor wing, 7 East, temporarily used as a dedicated COVID treatment unit. In the midst of the pandemic, hospital construction officials implemented another innovation – re-engineering ventilation systems, giving the facility the ability to utilize outdoor air for full circulation throughout the Hersh Children’s Center and Bouras Emergency Department. These and additional phases of the enhancement plan are funded through generous donations to the Overlook Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports the hospital.

SEARCH LAUNCHES FOR NEW CURATOR AT ARTS CENTER Mary Birmingham will step down as curator at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit efffective March 5, to pursue work as an independent curator. A search has begun for her replacement. “I am honored to have served as VACNJ’s first staff curator, and I am grateful for the trust that Executive Director Melanie Cohn and the Board of Trustees placed in me in directing the Art Center’s curatorial program,” said Birmingham. “Their encouragement and support enabled me to present a variety of artists and artworks, showcasing some of the best and most compelling art of our time. I have always placed artists at the center of my practice -- they inspire everything I do as a curator of contemporary art.” Since being hired as VACNJ’s first staff curator in 2010, Ms. Birmingham has directed an ambitious program of contemporary art exhibitions and related events. She began her career as a cataloguer at the Whitney Museum and, after taking time off to raise three children, was a curatorial assistant at the Montclair Art Museum and the director of exhibitions at the Hunterdon Art Museum. She is the author of Dynamic Impulse: The Drawings of Stuart Davis and numerous exhibition catalogues. “I am grateful to have collaborated with so many amazing

Volume 39

artists whose work has enriched and even improved our world. It has been my honor to share their work with our audiences through exhibitions that created new contexts for meaningful conversations about art,” Birmingham reflected. “I treasure all these experiences and relationships and take them with me as I move on to the next stage of my career.” For more than 85 years, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has been dedicated to viewing, making and learning about contemporary art. The Studio School, acclaimed exhibitions and educational outreach initiatives serve thousands of youths, families, seniors and people with special needs every year. The center is at 68 Elm St., and gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 to 5 and Sunday 11 to 4. Undoubtedly, everyone is aware of the ongoing motor vehicle thefts in our neighborhoods and throughout the State of New Jersey. Combatting professional vehicle theft is a complex problem that will require a coordinated effort among members of our community and the Summit Police Department, as well as neighboring municipalities, county, state and federal agencies. On Jan. 24, mayors and police chiefs from Millburn, New Providence, Chatham Borough and Township, Springfield, Westfield and Summit held a video conference to share our challenges in preventing motor vehicle theft. Without exception, each area police department has increased patrols, identified high-theft areas in each community and gathered extensive data on operating patterns of criminals. We discussed the importance of intelligence-based

actions and how license plate reader technology at community entry and exit points, and on police vehicles is, essential. The group plans to meet again in February.

The Township’s OEM (Office of Emergency Management) team has been submitting reimbursable expenses to FEMA for work done to clean up after Hurricane Ida. The Township Council will be considering an ordinance with all the capital work to be done to repair infrastructure damage from the storm.

While we certainly agree that local law enforcement agencies must shoulder the largest burden in dealing with auto theft, there is no doubt among local leaders that professional thieves benefit from numerous opportunities automobile owners create. The message is clear: Lock vehicles and remove keys every time you park.

We are in budget season. Our CFO and administrator continue to meet with department heads to put together this year’s proposed operating and capital budget for council consideration. We are also discussing with council how to improve the budget process and put into place an effective, informative process that can be followed forward the future.

Summit Common Council and I are working closely with the Summit Police Department to ensure the voices of our neighbors are heard in Summit and throughout the State of New Jersey. I ask you to partner with us.

Lively discussions have occurred around the topic of enhancing the Sherman Avenue corridor. Sherman has the potential to be greatly improved as a pedestrian thoroughfare and as a more attractive strip for businesses with a connectivity to one of our crown jewels, Peppertown Park. The township anticipates that improvements will attract more businesses to the area.

Stay safe, be well and I hope to see you around town.

The township also completed most of the work for the AARP grant we received to make some of our trail networks more senior- and pedestrian-friendly. There are now four new wooden kiosks -- at Snyder and Passaic Park, the YMCA and Lower Columbia Park -- that

feature beautiful large new trail maps. As we know, recreation and economic development go hand-in-hand. Last year, the township was awarded a $243,000 grant to help pay for equipment and technology needed to move to County Dispatch. As we submit reimbursement reports to draw down on that grant, we are applying again this year for the remainder of those costs. These grant funds assist our police, fire and rescue squad. Our planner and I met with NJ Transit to request an expanded bus line and/or train service in advance of FiServe moving 1,500 jobs into Berkeley Heights in 2022. Likewise, we made them aware of the redevelopment anticipated for this year and next, as well as the Connell build-out in the next few years. We will have on-going dialogue with NJT to update our transit needs for the future. Finally, I echo the concerns of my colleagues from New Providence and Summit. Please your lock vehicles and remove keys every time you park. When it comes to vehicle thefts, we suffer from a small-town mentality that while we do live in safe, wonderful communities, it does not preclude us or protect us from car thieves. We leave ourselves vulnerable by not locking our vehicles regardless whether the vehicle is in your driveway or in your garage. This is a reminder that we all need heighten awareness to the issue of auto theft and should practice vigilance to remain protected. Angie D. Devanney Mayor Berkeley Heights

inter is in full swing here in New Providence. Our department heads and administration are busy planning and preparing budgets, and are working on securing grants for the upcoming year. Projects are happening throughout the borough, including utility companies coming in to upgrade our infrastructure. Please expect periodic road closures and disruptions while this important work progresses.

One of our priorities this year is to address traffic and pedestrian safety. The Traffic Division has been developing a borough-wide traffic and safety plan to identify potential traffic management and implement calming measures and strategies to enhance safety, accessibility and mobility around New Providence. The New Providence Police Department has also begun a One Street a Week Traffic Enforcement Campaign. The purpose of this program is to coordinate education and enforcement efforts on one borough street each week with the goal of reducing speeding and other dangerous traffic violations through an established and ongoing police presence. Please remind family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to drive with care, and we remind everyone not to speed through New Providence! The borough is also coordinating with neighboring communities to address car thefts. We remind everyone to please keep vehicles locked, and be sure your key fob is not left in your vehicle. Thank you also to our emergency management team – police, fire and EMS -- for taking such great care of us and helping to keep us all safe. Thank you to the Regional Board of Health

and especially to our borough nurse for their hard work ensuring our community safety. We also thank all our healthcare providers, essential workers and everyone affected and on the forefront of this pandemic for their good service protecting us. We mourn our lost, and will continue to keep them, all our afflicted and their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers while continuing to do all we can to help protect our community. We would also like to acknowledge and thank our incredible borough staff and employees, who have continually gone above and beyond taking care of all our day-to-day operations, providing excellent service without disruption during these challenging times. Our Recreation Department has also continued to provide an abundance of new and innovative activities for all ages to help keep our community active and engaged. All are truly to be commended. We cannot stress strongly enough the importance of shopping local and supporting our small businesses who continually support our community. Please shop New Providence! Wishing all a happy and healthy New Year ahead! Mayor Al Morgan New Providence

GL SENIORS CAN APPLY FOR NEW TOM BARTON SCHOLARSHIP The Berkeley Heights Recreation Commission/Berkeley Heights Recreation Department recently announced creation of The Tom Barton Scholarship Fund. Mr. Barton, who served as the township’s recreation director for 18 years, died on Dec. 5, 2021, after battling cancer. Officials at the Recreation Commission/Recreation Department said they wanted to do something that would ensure Mr. Barton’s legacy, and wanted it to be meaningful to his family - wife JoAnne and daughters Andrea and Allison - as well as the countless community members whose lives Mr. Barton touched. “Holding true to the values and general good nature of Tom Barton, we worked with GLHS and developed a scholarship that will go to a graduating senior at GLHS each year,” township officials noted. “The criteria of the scholarship is based around recreation participation in Berkeley Heights/Mountainside and what the student’s recreation participation has meant to that student growing up over the years.” The officials continued, “We want the scholarship to be impactful to the recipient, but also something the Township of Berkeley Heights and the community, children and seniors who Tom interacted with daily would feel positive about contributing to. We all take great pride in saying we are from Berkeley Heights/Mountainside, and we are hoping some of this pride will expand into a donation to the legacy of Tom through the Tom Barton Scholarship Fund. Tom had friends and relationships in recreation throughout the state, county and surrounding local towns, and participated actively as an officer in the NJRPA (New Jersey Recreation & Parks Association). He is missed by all.” To learn how to make a donation, visit friendsofbhrec.com/tom-barton-scholarship.

Ten years later he oversaw renovation of Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills, then returned to Wave Hill just before the institution marked its 50th year in 2014. All are welcome to hear Mr. Bauer share stories drawn from experiences that eventually led to him to serve at the horticultural helm of a world-renowned public garden. Light refreshments will be served. Mr. Bauer is the first in a series of “Notable Garden Speakers” featured at the arboretum this year. Randi Eckel of Toadshade Wildflower Farm will be next, on Thursday, April 28, highlighting the role of native plants in landscape design. The speaker series takes place in the historic Wisner House on site at the ReevesReed Arboretum, as well as virtually. The cost for RRA members is $10, $25 for others. J Sharing Network, the New Providence-based, federally-designated non-profit responsible for the recovery of organ and tissue donation in the state, announced the number of organ donors in a single year reached an all-time high as 233 individuals in New Jersey gave the gift of life in 2021. “We owe this achievement, first and foremost, to our donor heroes, who generously gave the gift of life, as well as their supportive families,” said Joseph S. Roth, president and chief executive officer of NJ Sharing Network. “We are also deeply grateful for the extraordinary efforts of our team members and healthcare partners who work around the clock to help power our life-saving mission.” In 2021, 599 organs were transplanted thanks to donors in New Jersey, including 322 kidneys, 151 livers (new record for liver recoveries), 57 hearts, 49 lungs and 20 pancreases. In addition, 42,112 eye and tissue donations healed and enhanced the quality of life for those in need. Tissue donations include corneas, heart valves, skin grafts, bone grafts, ligaments and tendons. One organ donor can save

eight lives, according to NJ Sharing staff, and one tissue donor can enhance the lives of more than 75 people. New Jerseyans may register at NJSharingNetwork.org, through the iPhone Health App or in person at any Motor Vehicle Agency According to United Network for Organ Sharing, nearly 4,000 people in New Jersey are on the organ transplant waiting list, and one person dies every three days waiting for a transplant. However, the generosity of those in the Garden State is providing hope for the future, according to Carolyn M. Welsh, chief operating officer at NJ Sharing Network. “Strong support for donation in New Jersey’s diverse communities has been achieved thanks to education and outreach efforts as well as expanded ways to register as an organ and tissue donor,” said Ms. Welsh. “Our dedicated team of professionals is fortunate to be supported by a range of community volunteers and partners who are committed to help save lives and improve the health and well-being of our neighbors.”

hile it may already feel in February like it’s been winter forever, there are weeks of potential cold weather, frozen precipitation and dangerous driving yet to come. Emergency response workers in New Providence have compiled a list they are calling “Be Prepared for an Emergency,” and are asking all local residents to heed their advice:

CREATE AN EMERGENCY PLAN. Keep abreast of potential weather disasters headed to the region, and register to receive SMART 911 Alert messages at newprov.org. Put your plan down on paper and practice it once a month with the members of your household. As part of your preparation, designate an emergency meeting place in case you are separated from family members. Remember that children may be in school during the emergency. Once you have devised a plan, be sure to post it in your home so that all family members can refer to it easily.

PREPARE A DISASTER SURVIVAL KIT The next time a crisis strikes, there may not be much time to act. Whether the emergency is a power outage, winter storm, fire, hurricane, flood or thunderstorm, the best thing to do is to prepare now. Include special provisions for children and for any disabled family members

www.suburbanchambers.org

MAKE SURE TO KEEP THE DISASTER KIT UPDATED To help you get started, emergency response workers suggest contents that includes flashlights, a battery-operated or crank radio, extra fresh batteries, bottled water (1 gallon per day per person, and enough for three days), sanitation supplies (bleach, etc.), a three-day supply of canned goods and other non-perishable food items, a manual can opener, candles and matches in a waterproof container, a first aid kit and prescription medications, extra pet supplies and any necessary special items for infants, the elderly or disabled family members.

TEST YOUR SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS, AND CHANGE THE BATTERIES REGULARLY. In addition, borough residents are encouraged to register disabled family members with the New Providence Police Department by reaching out to Susan DeLuise 908-665-1111.
