Try CAN, ove

his is the story of how my personal trainer gave me my life back. My name is Cathy, and the story you’re about to read is a crazy one, so get ready.

There was no one more skeptical than I was, there was no one who hated to exercise more than I did...and there was no one who loved to eat more. But my trainers taught me three things everyone needs to live a healthier life:

1. A BIG REASON WHY

I spent my entire life overweight, out of shape and dealing with health problems. I used to make jokes about it, but deep inside I wasn’t happy with how I looked. In addition, my doctor was unhappy with how I looked on the inside, and gave me a verbal lashing I’ll never forget, but that was the kick I needed.

My why was to be around for a long happy life with the people I love most. This is what keeps me going today.

2. A SUPPORT SYSTEM TO KEEP THEM GOING My support system was the team of trainers at Gabriele Fitness. They are the best because they know their stuff and they tell you the truth.

I drove home from the doctor crying and upset that I had let myself get to this point. I knew I needed to do something, but I had no clue where to start. I also knew how much I loved sugar, and how much I hated exercise.

3. A GUIDE BOOK TO HELP YOU KNOW WHAT TO EAT The Gabriele Fitness trainers gave me a recipe book that saved me. It’s jammed with 37 healthy recipes that I know you’ll love. It's even got the exact meal plan I used inside! (You can get a free copy at the link below.)

I had never stepped foot inside a gym before and I swore I never would. Well, I think the stars aligned that day, and an ad from a local personal trainer came across my feed. I knew the guy who ran the gym, and they had worked wonders with my 50 year old brother, but that place intimidated the heck out of me. On any other day, I would have scrolled right past it, but it was just hours after my doctor had kicked me in the teeth. I no longer wanted to be a bad example for children -- I was truly showing them how to live an unhealthy life. I was ready to make a change. I applied to win six weeks of FREE personal training at Gabriele Fitness in Berkeley Heights. I secretly hoped I would NOT get picked, but I guess they read my story and wanted to help. Just a week after I sat in my doctor’s office, I sat in a different office... the office of my personal trainer, Vince Gabriele. I had no idea this would be the guy who helped me change my life, but he was.

Here’s my advice: Don’t wait till your doctor yells at you take control over your health. I know this pandemic has made all of us crazy, but too many people have let their health and fitness go off the rails. It’s time to kick it in gear, and your friend Cathy B is here to help. Go to www.gfprecipes.com to get the exact meal plan I used in my journey.Good luck! Cathy B P.S. If you muster up the courage and call Gabriele Fitness to get started on your own fitness journey... I’ve got an amazing FREE gift for you. Vince gave me 10 free one-month memberships to give to people who inspired my story. This ain't no big box gym either, it's real deal personal training. Just be one of the first 10 people to call 908-464-4441...and you'll be on your way to life changing health.

In six weeks I lost 25 pounds, and in six months, I lost 83! This was five years ago. Today, as I write this in the heart of a pandemic, I have not gained a pound back!

A group of volunteers has launched a fundraiser to purchase gym equipment for the Berkeley Heights Police Department for use in the new municipal complex. Organizers noted, “Keeping fit is not only important for the police physically, but mentally and emotionally, as well, which has trickledown benefits for the people they protect and serve.” The gym in the new building will not only be used by the officers to keep fit, the plan is there will also be self-defense classes for the public in the new mat room, as well as other community programs. The fundraising goal is $50,000, and by mid-January, nearly $3,000 had been collected. Donors of $25 through $499 will receive logo items including car magnets and mugs, and those who contribute more than $500 can request their names on a group plaque or contact organizers to select specific equipment to donate. Contributions are tax-deductible, as the Berkeley Heights Police Athletic League is a 501(c)(3). Donations may be made via Venmo at BerkeleyHeights-PAL or through Paypal, payments@bhpal.org, and checks may be mailed to Donna Aflalo, PO Box 132, Berkeley Heights 07922. (Include BHPD in your donation notes.) Direct questions to bhpdfundraiser@gmail.com, or visit a Facebook page dedicated to the effort, at BHPDFundraiser.

WINNING LOGO -- “Berkeley Heights Police: Embracing the Community With Heart” reads the winning entry in a community policing design contest won by Maya Naik and Joshua Sayre. The logo is being put to use as a group of volunteers launches an effort to raise funds to buy equipment for the officers for a gym in the new municipal complex. Maya Naik and Joshua Sayre were named the winners of the Community Policing Unit Logo Design Contest, and their colorful creation graces the magnets, mugs and other items being used to promote the gym fundraiser.

NAMES ANGELA AND JEFF SCHROEDER 2021 MEALS ON WHEELS SWEETHEARTS The 13th annual Meals on Wheels Sweethearts for 2021 are Angela and Jeff Schroeder of Summit. Local residents for 24 years, the couple started working at SAGE’s Meals on Wheels during the COVID-19 lockdown. The parents of six children, (four daughters and two sons, ages 16, 18, 19, 20, 22 and 25), they credit their sons with getting them involved in Meals on Wheels. The boys, who were at home working remotely, had each been delivering a route. They praised the program so much that Angela and Jeff decided to get involved. Since then, it has become a family affair with all eight of the Schroeders pitching in to support Meals on Wheels. Whether it is sorting food donations, filling bags with non-perishables, driving a route or making beautifully printed labels to make packages look extra special, everyone has devoted time and energy to the program. “It’s such an easy thing to volunteer to do,” said Angela. “And it makes a tremendous impact.”

Angela and Jeff have become very fond of the people they deliver to as a team every Thursday. When they learned a client had been hospitalized, they sent flowers. When it’s apparent that someone needs a visit as much as they do a meal, they mask up and make time to talk. One of Angela’s favorite Meals on Wheels encounters was when she and Jeff were delivering a meal to a local gentleman, Mr. A. When they arrived, Mr. A was talking from his porch to a neighbor. As Jeff approached, he called out “Looking good, Mr. A!” The client was so thrilled and proud for his neighbor to see that these people were there just to see him. “You could tell it was a real boost for him,” said Angela. “That’s the magic of Meals on Wheels.” Noting that they have both volunteered for many organizations, the couple praised the staff at SAGE for their positive energy, commitment to what they do and their professionalism. “It’s so impressive how everything is so well organized and how grateful they are for the volunteers,” said Jeff. For more information about getting involved at SAGE, please call 908-273-5554.

Angela and Jeff Schroeder are SAGE Meals on Wheels Sweethearts of the Year for 2021. The couple, who have lived in Summit for 24 years, began volunteering at SAGE during the COVID-19 lockdown. Their six children ages 16-25 have also been supporting the program in meaningful ways making the whole experience a family affair. M

ountain Valley Emergency Communications Center (MVECC), the regional public safety answering point serving Summit, New Providence (where it is based) and Millburn, will implement an application that allows 9-1-1 callers to send pictures and video or other incidentrelated imagery from an emergency scene to first responders through the 9-1-1 system. The MVECC is the first public safety answering point in the state, and the first in the northeastern part of the nation, to operationalize this capability. MVECC expects delivery and initial testing of the Motorola Solutions CommandCentral Citizen Input application to occur this month, with staff training and implementation to follow. Since the visual component of 9-1-1 call processing is a new initiative for the emergency communications profession, MVECC has created a group made up of several frontline dispatch personnel who will work with the communication center’s leadership team to develop policies and procedures for its use. D. Jeremy DeMar, executive director of the MVECC, said, “Since the very first 9-1-1 call was made over 50 years ago, emergency communications professionals have relied on 9-1-1 callers to provide emergency information verbally. While our nation’s 9-1-1 professionals do a wonderful job determining the nature of a problem based solely on what they are hearing, advances in technology and in the wireless devices many people carry now permit callers to send images and video directly from an emergency scene to 9-1-1 and first

www.suburbanchambers.org

responders.” He described the capability as “a true game-changer for the 9-1-1 profession,” but emphasized that persons experiencing an emergency should always call 9-1-1 first. “Mountain Valley Emergency Communications is a true leader among public safety agencies,” said Lynne Houserman, vice president, Emergency Call Handling, Software Enterprise, Motorola Solutions. “By deploying CommandCentral Citizen Input, MVECC is providing citizens with a lifeline, enabling them to quickly provide 9-1-1 call takers with images, streaming video or recordings through a cloud-based service so that the call-takers have added information to inform their decision-making and expedite a safe response to the event.”

A 20 th Anniversary Message from Summit’s Mind Body Wellness Center Founder Beth Pincus

T

wenty years ago, we invited people to join us at an open house celebrating the grand opening of the Mind Body Wellness Center.. We described ourselves as “Summit’s first psychological spa,” and offered a multitude of wellness services, ranging from massage and acupuncture to nutrition and mental health services. It was a concept well-known and scattered throughout the West Coast, but was a relatively new idea on the East Coast in 2000. Twenty years later, we have had the privilege of having many wonderful, diverse professionals as part of our history. Now, in 2020, wellness centers are a common go-to healing option. We are proud to say that, through 9/11, hurricanes and Covid, we continue to support our wonderful community of Summit and the surrounding areas. We remain committed to our healing mission as we move into our 21st year. For details visit mindbodywellnesscenter.org or reach out to Beth Pincus, MSW, LCSW, BCD, via bethlcsw@aol.com or 908-403-4544. We wish peace, health and healing to everyone. Editor’s note: The Suburban Chamber of Commerce congratulates Beth and the entire Mind Body Wellness Center staff on their milestone anniversary, and notes that not only did Beth join the Chamber two decades ago upon the center’s opening, but her family connection goes back even farther. Her father, Robert Seligman, was the owner of the Summit Luggage Center, and once served as the Chamber’s chairman!

SUMMIT-BASED SAGE CURRENTLY PROVIDING RECORD-BREAKING NUMBER OF MEALS ON WHEELS

T

hough the Covid pandemic forced many businesses and services to close in 2020, the demand for SAGE’s Meals on Wheels kept increasing.

about leaving the house to get to a grocery store,” said Ms. Kranz. “There were also people coming home from the hospital alone, scared and food insecure.” Meals on Wheels was there to help and continues to be a vital support to those in the community who need it. The average age of someone receiving meals is 83. Half of these clients live alone and 65 percent rarely see anyone other than the volunteer who brings them their meal.

By the end of the year, the Summit-based nonprofit had delivered a record-breaking 50,000 meals, an increase of 7,000 over the previous year. Family members who were unable to visit and offer in-person support to their older adult relatives often called on Meals on Wheels for help. The meal service became an increasingly important resource for food and a means for having someone check in on loved ones. According to Marianne Kranz, the director of Meals on Wheels for SAGE, she, her staff and many volunteers continued to go to the SAGE building at 290 Broad St. every day during the pandemic to pack and then deliver meals. Community organizations and area residents pitched in by donating what was needed. Along with frozen meals and nonperishable food items, people dropped off toilet paper and paper towels, masks and baked goods,

Achieves Nursing Magnet Designation,

A

tlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center achieved Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the highest national honor for nursing excellence, as a reflection of Overlook’s nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. This credential was earned during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic. With this credential, Overlook joins the global community of Magnet-recognized organizations. It is now one of only 541 hospitals in the entire nation that have earned this recognition, representing less than nine percent of hospitals in the United States. “This truly culminated more than a decade of work to create a professionally stellar, compassionate and empowered nursing team,” said Alan Lieber, president of Overlook Medical Center. “Our nurses have demonstrated these qualities as we faced the biggest crisis in health care, and there was no doubt that our culture of excellence was on display during Magnet’s tour of Overlook. This recognition reflects our nurses’ commitment to providing exceptional care to our patients and the community.” The Magnet designation marks another major national achievement for Overlook which also this year received for the first time the Healthgrades 2020 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™. ANCC’s Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. Magnet recognition is the gold standard for nursing excellence and is often a consideration among

patients and the public when evaluating health care facilities. U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care. The designation, which was announced to Overlook’s nursing team last fall by ANCC representatives, capped off a long and extraordinary journey for this prestigious recognition. Overlook’s survey was originally scheduled for early 2020. Having surveyors onsite was not possible, so the ANCC began conducting virtual surveys at eligible facilities. They had only completed a handful of virtual surveys when Overlook’s turn came in August. Three Magnet surveyors rounded on each and every unit with a nursing presence, interacting with nurses by way of iPad carts. Overlook’s Magnet champion escorts and ISS team members “escorted” the surveyors to each unit.

Rather than pose additional challenges, the unprecedented event only served to further highlight how Overlook’s team comes together to provide excellent care.

Additionally, Overlook’s physicians described the organization as "nurse-centric" in driving quality initiatives and were instrumental in the success of the organization's highly-recognized stroke program.

“By the time our survey took place, the first five months of the pandemic had highlighted just how our nurses had integrated the Magnet qualities into the very fabric of Overlook’s culture - staff empowerment, shared decision making, autonomy, professional development, nurse recruitment/retention and a higher standard of practice,” said MaryPat Sullivan, chief nursing and experience officer at Overlook Medical Center. “In truth, it was the perfect ending to our journey to Magnet – a time to show how nurses work together as a team and how all of Overlook supports and encourages stellar teamwork with nursing,” said Deb Toresco, RN,

- 22 -

Magnet surveyors noted during the site visit, that Overlook nurses spoke highly of the organization in terms of support for educational activities, professional certification, and time to participate in governance activities, and that the words "Family" and "Team" were often used by nurses.

“It is very evident that Overlook has made a huge effort and contribution to the community during the COVID-19 Pandemic,” ANCC surveyors noted in their report to Overlook. The Magnet designation is granted every four years to only those organizations that demonstrate sustained superiority in nursing care. Applicants undergo an extensive evaluation and members granted Magnet status must continue to meet rigorous standards.
