Regardless of which test your child decides to take, now is

ith the redesigned SAT on the way, today’s sophomores

have

an

exciting

opportunity

to choose from a variety of tests for college

admissions. The ACT, current SAT, and new SAT (coming in Spring 2016) are all options for current 10th graders to consider. Keep in mind that high test scores obviously impact admissions but can also open doors to merit scholarships for families at all income levels. How do families choose from this potentially bewildering selection of tests and how can students make the most of the time left to prepare?

Guidance counselors, professional college counselors, and test prep coaches are all powerful resources to help guide students through the maze of test options. A good coach will help you use the available data to choose the test that is the right fit for your own unique child. They should offer your student a diagnostic, a great tool for familiarizing kids with the tests and for capturing information about their current strengths and weaknesses. A good coach will offer a variety of settings for test prep, knowing that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to education. Private tutoring, small groups, and small classes each have their pros and cons.

Finally, a good coach will be well-informed about each test, but will also be frank about the fact that much of the new SAT is still unknown.

the time to build the academic fluency that is so valuable. Math facts mastery, understanding math concepts, estimation, and number-sense are more important than ever. Now is the time to lose that dependence on the calculator or cell phone for performing simple math. Now is the time to learn reliable and useful methods for data analysis, including interpretation of graphs, charts, and visuals. Whether in Math, Social Studies, or Science, data-interpretation skills can be applied on the SAT, ACT, AP tests, and beyond, with relevance to college courses, too.

A second thing we know for sure is that analytical skills are essential, on both the old and redesigned tests. The days of memorizing vocabulary flashcards and obscure grammar rules are over. It’s not enough to know the meaning of a word. You need to know what kind of word is needed in the sentence, which might include understanding tone and making inferences. Similarly, in word problems we frequently see students choose the wrong answer because they don’t understand what the questions is actually asking. There is an art to teaching analysis and inference, and it can’t be taught using a canned curriculum. Chyten’s knowledgeable tutors help students move beyond passive reading to help them get to the heart of the material.

Kent Place Middle School Students Named Champions at Forensics Competition The Kent Place Middle School Forensics Team was named champion at the Middle School Consortium Forensics Competition held at the College of Saint Elizabeth in January. Six Kent Place seventh and eighth grade students participated in the competition, which showcases the public speaking abilities of Middle School students. Students competed in either the Original Oratory or Interpretive Reading categories.

“We were so proud of the way these girls represented KPS. They were truly fearless public speakers!” stated Middle and Upper School librarian Donna Gulino and Middle School English teacher Kathie Hone, who served as the forensics team coaches.

Original Oratory competitors from Kent Place included

eighth graders Kaira Brown of Somerset, Grace Reddington of Montclair and Lauren Liroff of South Orange. Interpretive Reading competitors included seventh graders Stacey Espiritu of Livingston, Elizabeth Cotter of Mountainside and eighth grader Disha Karale of Parsippany.

The team won overall in both categories, as well as taking home prizes for individual excellence!

Art teacher Kelly Coyle’s upper level art classes recently enjoyed the benefit of a professional figure model. The young man was hired with funds from an SEF (Summit Educational Foundation) grant, designed to introduce upper

According to Ms. Coyle, a co-author of the grant, most higher education art programs accepting portfolios want to see renderings done directly from the subject source, not indirectly from photographs.

She explained, “Our students are always doing figurative work, but they rarely get the opportunity to draw from life, and this gave them the chance to do so. This also enabled them to create a strong portfolio piece that will be useful should they continue to pursue art studies beyond high school.”

Students created an array of pieces, including quick pose gesture drawings in pencil and charcoal, drawings in dry media (colored pencil, pastels, etc.) from longer poses, and pieces in wet media (watercolor, gouache, acrylic, etc.) from poses that lasted for the full class period. In the Sculpture and Ceramics class, the students created busts of the model’s face.

Liz Tenny, 11th grade art student, was enthusiastic about having a live subject. “It was a really different, new experience. I found drawing from the life model inspiring.”

“We are so thankful to the SEF for making this possible,” Ms. Coyle said. “The students created lovely drawings and paintings and had a lot of fun doing it.”

‘Made with Code’ Project Helps Oak Knoll Students Light Up the White House The work of Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child students was on display in Washington, D.C, in December, when the state Christmas tree they coded lights up the nation’s capital. Ms. Nicole Johnston’s junior and senior survey class made the decision to take part in Google’s “Made with Code” initiative to light up trees in President’s Park in Washington.

Google introduced the “Made with Code” program last year with a goal of inspiring millions of girls to try coding and understand more about computer science.

“Made with Code” introduces girls to a program called Blockly, which they could and did use to animate the lights of the smaller trees that surround the National

“We had been studying past presidents and each of their more famous programs,” Ms. Johnson said. “By discussing this initiative, to have girls become more involved in coding, it led to a great conversation about the different programs presidents have developed throughout the years to help girls and women.”

Making the Unfamiliar, Familiar:

Summit Educational Foundation Grant Spotlight Who knew that sapphires contain atoms of aluminum, oxygen, iron and titanium? Or that there are pockets of air trapped between a swan’s feathers to help keep it afloat? Author Melissa Stewart has written about these fascinating tidbits and more in the close to 200 books she has written. She was invited

by Lincoln-Hubbard School’s librarian, Carole Stubeck, who co-penned an SEF grant for the district, to come to the Summit elementary schools for a week to share her talents.

Stewart, a prolific writer of predominantly nature-related books, visited all five elementary schools to discuss the nonfiction writing process with students in grades 3 through 5. Franklin librarian Loreli Stochaj explained, “Melissa Stewart infused her presentations with strategies she uses for writing her nonfiction books. Interspersed with references to her books which the students read in the library leading up to her visit, she described how each book is unique and how she must figure out a way to make the unfamiliar familiar, while also intriguing the reader.” As an example, when Stewart met with the Franklin 3rd grade classes, she used her book No Monkeys, No Chocolate to show how a writer can use a creative story to relay hard facts. With the Franklin 4th and 5th grade classes, she focused on how a writer can choose among various methods when writing nonfiction, like the narrative form versus the traditional form.

Barbara Slezak, 5th grade Lincoln-Hubbard teacher, thought Stewart’s visit was particularly helpful for her students. “Nonfiction is a key component of the Common Core Curriculum Standards for 5th grade. The students are expected to be able to read, comprehend, and draw information from paired nonfiction passages, as well as write informational and persuasive essays on nonfiction topics. Having the opportunity to hear the process a nonfiction writer uses to produce such accurate and entertaining books makes the whole nonfiction unit come alive for the students.”

Hoboken Farms and Kings In Short Hills Partnered To Help the Hungry Hoboken Farms and Kings Food Markets worked together recently to help raise money for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ).

During the week of January 12, customers were invited to visit the Kings in Short Hills to enjoy samples of award- winning Hoboken Farms Big Red Marinara and Big Boss Vodka Sauce, both of which are made locally and are sugar and gluten free. For each bottle purchased, Hoboken Farms and Kings donated $1 to the Community FoodBank.

Last year, the CFBN, the state’s largest anti-hunger organization, distributed 43 million pounds of food to more than 1,000 partner charities, including food pantries, soup kitchens, and feeding programs for children and seniors.

Farms and Kings Food Markets are both longtime, loyal FoodBank supporters. Especially at a time when one in five children in New Jersey faces hunger, this effort to raise both money and awareness is deeply appreciated.”

“For each bottle of sauce sold, the food bank was able to distribute $10 worth of food,” said Brad Finkel, founder of Hoboken Farms.

Summit College Club Looking for Book Donations The Summit College Club (SCC) is seeking books and other media donations for its annual Book Sale, set for late April, 2015. Donations can be brought to Westy Self Storage, 15 River Road, Chatham, between now and April 8. All donations must be in good condition and packed in bags or boxes.

The drop-off in Westy’s lobby will run from 8am to 5pm on weekdays, 9am to 5pm on Saturdays, and 11am to 3pm on Sundays. The Summit College Club Book Sale welcomes donations of books, CDs, and DVDs, but does not accept textbooks, manuals, magazines or encyclopedias.

The Book Sale will be held at the American Legion Hall on Elkwood Avenue in New Providence (next to the

library) from April 21 through 26. The event, a highlight of the club’s year, has seen significant growth over the past five years.

Proceeds from the sale are used to fund scholarships for college-bound young women graduating from local high schools, the future women leaders from our communities.

Pure Pilates Raises $1,200 for Lung Cancer Research at Special Event Pure Pilates, located in New Providence, proudly announced they raised $1,200 during their “Breathing Life into Lung Cancer” event, held recently in support of Mass General Hospital for Ground Breaking Lung Cancer Therapy.

The fundraiser took place at the Pure Pilates studio, located at 133 Gales Drive, and was held in honor of former Pure Pilates client, Barbara Densen. All proceeds went to Mass General Hospital in her memory.

The Sunday event ran all morning and consisted of several classes, taught by instructors who donated their time for the cause. Breakfast was served and raffle prizes were awarded.

late-stage lung cancer in 2010 and brought her fight to Mass General. Barbara underwent multiple lung cancer therapies but, unfortunately, she eventually became resistant to her therapies and passed away in July, 2013. Given less than a year to live at diagnosis, she survived and thrived for more than three years, living long enough to see her daughter marry, a son graduate high school, and to fulfill a lifetime wish to hike the hills of Sedona and visit the Grand Canyon.

In her memory, friends and family of Barbara Densen created the Targeting a Cure for Lung Cancer Fund to support the lung cancer research program at Mass General. Through a combination of laboratory research and a large clinical trials program, they’re moving closer to turning the tables on this terrible disease.

One in 14 Americans — most of whom never smoked or who stopped smoking a long time ago — will receive a lung cancer diagnosis. The survival rate is less than five years.

NJ’s Lieutenant Governor Visits Overlook, Sees Extent of Medical Center’s Storm Preparedness

As last month’s winter storm was heading our way, with dire predictions, Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno visited Overlook Medical Center in Summit, to learn about -- and see first-hand -- the facility’s preparedness for super storms.

Guadagno learned that more than 85 nurses would be sleeping overnight at the hospital to be available for shift changes, and employees who might need assistance accessing the hospital would be transported to work and home via a fleet of emergency vehicles designated for employee transport during disasters and storms. In addition, the hospital staff she met with also explained that Overlook Medical Center does not rely on a local power grid; it operates independently through a state-of-the art trigeneration plant that recycles its own energy and power.

“It was generous of the Lieutenant Governor to visit us and express her thanks to the physicians, nurses, and staff who dedicate their time to the patients at Overlook,” said Alan Lieber, President of Overlook Medical Center. “A total of 125 staff members planned to stay the night here, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and even the cook. They come to Overlook with overnight bags ready to stay here for two days or more, if necessary. I’m proud of my employees and the healing culture they foster,” Alan added.
