ummit Downtown Inc., under the volunteer leadership of a Board of Trustees, headed by Kevin Smallwood, has a full calendar of events planned for 2014. With events happening almost every month, downtown Summit is a “happening” place.

“Our mission is to promote the downtown and our merchants,” Kevin explained. “We also want to forge a relationship between the residents and non-residents and our retailers, and the best way to do that is by various promotions, almost all of them family-friendly,” he added. Some of the highlights of the year’s downtown events include Restaurant Week (February 2-March 2), Girls’ Night Out (May 1), the Summit Farmers’ Market (May 11-November 23), the Spring Street Fair (May 25), Sidewalk Stroll & Sales (Jun 26-28), the GreenMarket (June 26-September 11), the Antique/Classic Car Show (September 21), Trick or Treating (October 31), and Santa’s Arrival (December 7).

“When it comes to parking, we will continue to work with the City to see what we can do to improve and enhance the parking we already have in the downtown,” Kevin offered.

“We will be exploring any options that may be out there, including looking at a more cohesive parking payment system to make it easier on our customers and clients.”

Kevin also spoke about the importance of meeting the needs of the upstairs businesses and offices, as well as the downtown property owners. “SDI will be discussing the possibility of adding a part-time recruiter who would work with the property owners to find

retailers and businesses that will benefit both them and the community. Currently, the downtown has a 97% occupancy rate, so we’re in good shape,” he added.

New Trustees to the SDI Board will be installed in late January, along with several new Officers. “From a Trustee standpoint, my goal is to become more effective as a promoter of the downtown, to create a more cohesive relationship with the merchants and businesses and to open communications with them. When the retailers and businesses get more involved, we can affect a better day-to-day working relationship. If our merchants and businesses succeed, than we have succeeded as an organization,” Kevin concluded.

Academy of Our Lady of Peace School Expands Community Outreach The Student Council of The Academy of Our Lady of Peace School in New Providence (“AOLP”) recently explored ways to strengthen the school’s connection to its community. After considering many worthy causes, the student representatives committed to “adopt” a monthly cause in order to benefit the community as well their own educational and spiritual growth.

The Council began its mission as the students sought to understand the challenges and needs of children battling cancer. The AOLP students responded with a fundraising event for St. Jude’s Hospital for Children. Not only did AOLP generously donate funds to this worthy cause, but the students also wanted a more personal connection to these young patients. They wanted to bring words of hope and encouragement to St. Jude’s Hospital. The students made lovely cards for the patients of St. Jude’s, which included heartfelt prayers and wishes for better times in the future.

The AOLP Student Council then discussed ways to demonstrate their support of the New Providence community. They decided to join the New Providence Police Department in its efforts to educate residents about the dangers of substance abuse. Once again the students responded with a fundraiser to provide direct support to those suffering from addiction, and donated the funds to Covenant House. In addition, the AOLP middle school students planted tulips at Memorial Park. The students hope that when the flowers bloom in springtime, a dialogue about the dangers of substance abuse will take place again, reinforcing the awareness created by the New Providence Police Department campaign.

The students of The Academy of Our Lady of Peace are committed to living out their faith through action – a “win-win” for these dedicated children and the community as a whole.

The Civil Rights Journey Explored During Kent Place School’s Perspectives Day In January, Kent Place School hosted its school-wide Perspectives Day. This year’s theme, “The Past, Present and Future of Civil Rights: The Journey Continues,” commemorated milestone anniversaries - the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education and the 50th anniversaries of the March on Washington, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act; celebrated the lives of those who led nonviolent struggles, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and President Nelson Mandela; and considered the role each student plays in creating a better world for herself, her community and the generations to come.

“This year’s Perspectives Day was a call to action,” stated Henaz Bhatt, Kent Place Director of Diversity. “The journey for human rights around the world and in our own communities is one in which we all play an integral part.”

The full-day event, celebrated by all three divisions, included reflective discussions, hands-on activities and guest speakers. A highlight of the day was the keynote address from Nontombi Naomi Tutu, gender and race activist and Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s daughter. Tutu shared her story about growing up as a black woman in apartheid South Africa to now living in Tennessee. “We have to pass on something even better to those who are going to come after us,” stated Tutu. “We are those then who pass on a community, a society, a country, a school that values the human dignity of all.”

Another speaker during the day was Jenn Borchetta, Civil Rights lawyer and senior counsel on the NYC Stop & Frisk case. Borchetta, who spoke to the Middle and Upper School students, discussed constitutional rights and shared her intimate knowledge of the recent case.

The Middle and Upper Schools also listened to a powerful panel of two alumnae — Karen Rowe ‘72, Kent Place’s first African American graduate and professor of communications in California, and Lisa Anderson Todd ‘60, who was involved with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Mississippi Freedom

While Upper School students participated in small group discussions in the afternoon, the Primary and Middle Schools enjoyed watching “At the Table with Dr. King,” a multimedia, spoken word and live music performance that calls students to action and service in their communities by responding to their life’s passions. Primary School students also read the book Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down by Andrea Davis Pinkney. The book is about the Woolworth’s lunch counter sit-in and how it was a defining moment for the civil rights movement.

Perspectives Day was created to help build and sustain a bridge between diverse experiences and cultures.

In giving the girls a day to immerse themselves in the perspectives of a vastly varied group of people, Kent Place hopes to provide them with meaningful exploration and understanding of the views of others and themselves as global citizens. Oak Knoll Third Graders Launched “12 Days of Kindness” Campaign Students in third grade religion classes kicked-off their inaugural “12 Days of Kindness” campaign at a December Lower School’s Friday Assembly.

Here’s how it started. Each month, Patti Cepparulo, drama and grades 3-4 religion teacher, sings a new song with her third and fourth grade religion classes. While searching for songs online one day, she came across a video in which a high school spread acts of kindness and inclusion throughout their school. At the end of the video it said, “Kindness is contagious.

Catch it and pass it on.” “I showed the video to my third graders and they decided to make a video as well that would promote kindness,” Cepparulo said. “They wanted to ‘pass it on.’” And so the “12 Days of Kindness” was born.

“It was a way for all people, young and old, to think of ways to give instead of get during the holidays,” Cepparulo explained.

Students engaged in a specific act of kindness assigned each day during the 12

Days of Kindness, December 8-19, including Talk to God Day, Make a New Friend Day, and Write Someone a Kind Note Day. Thirdgrader Thomas Reakes and his classmates also hoped that through this campaign they could serve as role models to not just be kind to others for the12 days, but to be kind to one another every day.

“The students remembered the words of Oak Knoll’s foundress Cornelia Connelly, ‘Actions, Not Words,’” Cepparulo said.

“It was our hope to spread kindness throughout the Lower School, and for others to see our campaign and do as we did… passing it on!” “Being kind is so simple and it makes everyone happy, so why wouldn’t you do it?” another student added.

Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child is an independent Catholic school enrolling boys and girls in kindergarten through grade six; and young women only in grades seven through 12.

Empty Bowls Project Funded by Summit Educational Foundation

“Empty Bowls” is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. It was created by The Imagine Render Group in response to reports that our nation’s food banks could soon be overwhelmed by demand, since statistics show that 1 out of 8 Americans struggle with food insecurity and the number of food stamp recipients has increased recently.

SEF provided a grant for SHS students to participate in an Empty Bowls project. Art teachers Kelly Coyle and Meghan Scozzari originated and organized the project. Art classes created handcrafted ceramic bowls using clay and glazes paid for by SEF. The Foods classes, along with other teachers and students, made soup and bread. A dinner was held where, in exchange for a cash donation, guests were fed the soup and bread and were asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. Student performers provided entertainment. In total, about 35-40 people came to eat soup and bread and listen to music. The over $600 raised was donated to Bridges Outreach to feed the hungry at shelters in Newark, Irvington and New York City.

Kelly Coyle summarized the event stating, “The best part about this project was that it spread awareness that there are many people in the world who have no food, or empty bowls, on a regular basis. Additionally, it raised money to help hunger in our community.”

Ms. Coyle expects to hold another Empty Bowls project this spring.

New Providence Has Plans to Move Forward

T

he Collection spoke with Gary Kapner, member of the New Providence Borough Council and owner of Creative Wallcoverings & Interiors in New Providence. He is the Council Liaison/Interim Chair to the Economic Development Committee (EDC) which recently put out a multipage report. The EDC is requesting the Council’s authorization to use Borough professionals to study the feasibility of the ideas, concepts and projects

spelled out in the report.

In line with the Downtown Business District objectives of fostering new ideas, facilitating communication and promoting cooperation, the EDC would like the Borough to partner with the local business community and work together to accomplish mutually beneficial projects.

The goals of the EDC include ease of access for shoppers, open access parking, creation of additional parking , traffic management, pedestrian safety, consolidation of services, connectivity to the recreation area, and creation of green space in the Borough, with an overall goal of creating a better-organized, attractive downtown shopping district.

The Borough Planner, Susan Gruel, and Engineer, Andy Hipolit, can work on this, and my goal is to see that what is proposed is something that we can accomplish within a reasonable amount of time. What I don’t want to happen is to have a good plan that sits on the shelf,” Gary added.

In the downtown, the EDC is looking at the Village Shopping Center and connecting properties, proposing ways that the merchants and property owners can better work together to facilitate parking and offering support from the Borough by creating additional parking configurations and bonding the work.

Traffic calming initiatives would be installed on various streets and corners.

“The Borough has a AAA rating, so we should be able to bond successfully to be able to fund some of the projects,” Gary explained. “We can create additional parking and connect parking lots to make it easier for the shoppers, making our downtown retail area more accessible,” he added.

Outside the downtown area, the EDC is looking at the creation of a River Walk, offering passive recreation along the Salt Brook from Springfield Avenue to Friendly’s. It would include lighting, seating, and better connect the downtown to the existing recreation area. Additional parking is being explored in the area of South Street and Springfield Avenue. Along Elkwood Avenue, the EDC is looking at the possibility of creating senior or age-restricted housing as well as additional parking that could benefit the Adams Shopping Center as well.

he mayors of the three towns served by the Suburban Chamber of Commerce recently gave their “state of the towns” reports at each municipality’s annual Organization Meeting, all held the first week of January.

Mayor Joe Bruno presented his State of the Township address on January 1 in the Berkeley Heights Council Chambers. He reported that Berkeley Heights was in very good shape after a good year in 2013.

The township’s new Dispatch and Emergency Communications Center opened in February of 2013.

The downtown is doing well with several new stores set to open in the near future, including the NY Mart and the Garden of Eden Marketplace. A new Chase Bank will open soon and negotiations are underway for the movie theatre to re-open as a community theatre and opera house. The Primrose School, a new all-day Kindergarten and child care center, is under construction on Springfield Avenue and will begin operations this year, and the Connell Company has announced the groundbreaking for the new Embassy Suites Hotel in their complex.

The township is continuing negotiations with Little Flower parish for a possible land swap which would provide the township with a much-needed updated library, police station and town hall. Fiscally, the township is operating within its budget and received and will receive a total of $753,000 in grants between 2013 and 2014. “I am very proud of the fact that Berkeley Heights was ranked #6 in the CNN/Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live issue in 2013,” Mayor Bruno said. He concluded by thanking all who work hard, both staff and volunteers, to make the township special and a “great place to live.”

New Providence held their 2014 Organization Meeting on January 6, before a large audience of local residents and Borough officials. Mayor J. Brooke Hern began his talk by expressing great optimism about the future of New Providence. “We are in the midst of substantial progress being made on important programs and policies that will ultimately save tax dollars, improve services, and strengthen our quality of life,” he explained.

A plan has been developed for improving the condition of the athletic fields, to begin this spring, with considerable upgrades to baseball and soccer fields, as part of a borough-wide program. Substantial progress has been made in the area of shared services, including a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Dispatch Center, located in Borough Hall. Funded with help from the Federal Homeland Security Agency, the new facility will be shared by the City of Summit and will increase safety and effectiveness in the dispatching of police, fire and Rescue Squad. In the area of public safety, the borough purchased a new pumper truck for the Fire Department and a new ambulance and equipment for the Rescue Squad.

The local economy has been strengthened thanks to the voters’ approval of the referendum to issue liquor licenses in the Borough. Following that vote, an ordinance has

been developed that governs the type and operation of restaurants that will be able to serve, and the first of four licenses will go out to bid in January. “Bringing quality restaurants to our town will put more people on our sidewalks, increasing business for everyone,” Mayor Hern explained. In that vein, a new Starbucks will open in the Village Shopping Center in 2014.

The Borough continues to strive for efficiencies in the way the local government delivers services, from savings in the recycling collection, to contracting with Summit to provide staff for their sewer treatment facilities, and more.

Success is due in large part to the hard work and collective effort of the employees and volunteers who serve in New Providence, and Mayor Hern graciously thanked all those who make New Providence a thriving and vibrant community.

“The Department of Community Programs continues to receive many accolades for their work and public events,” Mayor Dickson continued. “Our downtown is arguably one of the top attractions of Summit. It has a walkable scale and a variety of offerings, and the redesign of the three DeForest Park & Shop Lots received a construction management award from the NJ Society of Municipal Engineers.” The Downtown Planning Study’s recommendations will be “a blueprint for action for the Planning Board and Common Council” going forward, making the downtown area “even better.” “The City received Transit Oriented Development Status in 2013 and this may qualify us for additional grants,” she added.

She began by saying that Summit is a very successful community and by giving credit to the City’s Department heads whose accomplishments she went on to elaborate.

But first, she was happy to report the “end of an era of financial turmoil” – Summit had just issued $9.6 million of bonds at the rate of 2.49% for a period of 14 years. The bonds were rated by all three major credit rating agencies as AAA. Adding to this financial news, Mayor Dickson reported that Summit property owners invested more than $56 million in total construction value into their properties in 2013.

Following the havoc of Superstorm Sandy, the Department of Community Services (DCS) continued its storm response work in 2013. They instituted proactive measures to be even better prepared for future weather events, including major tree removal and maintenance projects. In the downtown, DCS worked with Summit Downtown Inc to repair crosswalks, and they partnered with the Summit Area Development Corp to upgrade portions of the Village Green. DCS staff also helped the City realize almost a million dollars of settlements and aid from the two hurricanes of the last three years.

To improve communications, the City added a part-time Communications Specialist, Amy Harrison. The Board of School Estimate approved a $17 million spending plan to improve facilities district-wide, and these projects are out to bid. The Library’s new director, Susan Permahos, is working out very well, and with regard to the Council on Affordable Housing, Summit’s spending plan was recently approved, making Summit one of the few communities with an approved plan. “We take our obligations seriously,” Mayor Dickson explained.

A fairly recent effort, the Summit Conservancy, became a non-profit entity which hopes to support the Summit Free Market with a permanent structure at the Transfer Station and support development of the Passaic River Trails Project. A new Community Garden Project was wildly successful and additional sites may be sought to satisfy demand for growing plots.

“Some of our ongoing challenges going forward include hardening our power grid at a reasonable cost and taxes, which Summit households pay a lot of,” Mayor Dickson said. Recent real estate tax distribution numbers show that, of the amount collected, 51% went to the schools, 26% to the County, and 23% stayed in Summit for city services.

Mayor Dickson repeated her request to the Freeholders that they stick to the 2% spending cap going forward.

Finally, Mayor Dickson thanked the many volunteers whose hard work helps make Summit an even better place to live and work,

“Tying the Communities Together” Honorees Chosen “ The Suburban Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards Dinner, “Tying the Communities Together,” will be held Wednesday, March 26, at The Grand Summit Hotel in Summit. The people and organizations to be honored that night have been selected, nominated by community members and business associates.

The Silver Service Award, which recognizes a private citizen or public servant who has served at least 25 years in multiple volunteer organizations and has demonstrated a long-time dedication to the community, is awarded to Summit resident Betse Gump.

The Lions Club of New Providence will receive the Public Service Organization Award, for consistently performing services within the community and carrying out one or more outstanding events or projects during the prior year.

The Beautification Award, recognizing a person, business, property owner or organization which has made significant improvements to a site that enhances the appearance and look of the property and community, is awarded this year to a person who has brought beauty to the community through the arts and drama, Anne Poyner, Head of the Drama Department at Summit High School. The school’s annual productions have been outstanding, professional, and the recipients of awards from the Paper Mill Playhouse.

The HomeTowne TV News Team will receive the Public Service Award, honoring a citizen or citizens - who has demonstrated exemplary service through volunteerism and community involvement.

The Summit Medical Group, Berkeley Heights, is the recipient of the Business of the Year Award, which recognizes a business or business person who has operated a business in our communities for at least five years and has contributed to local programs, events and other services, and has demonstrated outstanding business practices.

The President’s Award, presented as a special honor by the CEO of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce to a person, business or organization that has demonstrated outstanding leadership by providing services to its surrounding communities, will go to The Grand Summit Hotel and the Weinerman and Gelber Families who own and manage the hotel.

inter fitness Pro Tips by PGA Golf Professionals Sue and Tom Delaney Winter is a stay-inside time and that can mean not enough exercise for many people.

Then when spring arrives, these same folks may rush into their warm-weather sports schedule without the proper conditioning.

When it comes to golf, lack of flexibility causes a host of problems resulting in improper turning, poor balance, timing and ultimately a loss of club head speed. These tips will focus on increasing strength and flexibility during the winter months.

Since a fluid hip turn is a large part of the golf swing, it is important to work the deep muscle that protects the hip joint. To do this you need to lie on your right side and support your head with your right hand. Your left hand is placed on the mat in front of you for balance. Using a chair or bench, rest your left foot on top of the chair with your knee bent (less than a right angle). Now rotate your toes and knee until they face the ceiling. Hold this position for 1 to 2 seconds then return to your beginning position. Do 5 to 10 reps and then switch sides. While this move is an external rotation of the hip joint, an internal rotation of the hip joint is important to

staying balanced. So begin in the same position as for external rotation. Keep your bottom foot on the ground; bring the bottom knee up to the top knee, trying to touch knees together, and then straight back down. Pretend there is a rubber ball between your knees and squeeze. Don’t let the top leg sag because this can cut down on your range of motion. Do 5 to 10 reps and switch sides.

Golfers need to exercise their adductor muscles located on the inside of the thigh. This exercise is important because that is where the coil of the golf swing is generated. Similar to what we talked about above, begin by lying on your right side with your left foot up on a chair or bench. Support your head with your right hand.

Keep the upper leg slightly bent to keep pressure off your knee. The lower leg is extended straight. Keep both feet flexed. Raise the bottom leg, hold for one to two seconds. Exhale as you raise your leg and inhale as you lower it. Don’t let your leg rest at the bottom; keep tension on it. Work your way from 5 to 10 to eventually 40 reps. Switch sides and repeat. Remember to squeeze the inside of your thigh as you slowly raise your leg. Working on your legs in this manner will help increase your stability and power in your swing.

e recently sat down with Kassandra Romas, the newlyelected chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Suburban Chambers of Commerce, to talk about her ideas and goals for the chamber in 2014.

Ms. Romas, the Managing Director for Bouras Properties in downtown Summit, has had many years of volunteer experience in the non-profit world as well as years of experience as a successful property manager, but heading the local chamber is a new venture for her. “I want to get more involved in my community again, and as a local business person, I feel the chamber of commerce is a place where I’d like to give of my time and talents,” Ms. Romas explained.

“Volunteerism is really a profession which is implemented with the concept that giving of one’s time and talent should be done with dedication and enthusiasm!” she added.

Her goals are many and she brings lots of ideas to this new position.

“I want to help the chamber be an

even greater integral part of both the business and civic communities in the three towns that we serve. Advancing the stature of the chamber is a good first step toward that goal.”

Ms. Romas would like also to establish more interaction with other community organizations such as HomeTowneTV and Patch and The Alternative Press, to let residents know what’s going on with the business and retail communities and to increase awareness of the work the chamber does to promote local business. “Two of the challenges I see going forward are the blending of the business and retail communities into a better working relationship and promoting a productive interfacing with other organizations in our towns,” she explained.

Ms. Romas believes in a handson approach to any job or task she undertakes, but, internally, she also has a strong sense of the importance of bringing everyone “on board” and establishing a good working relationship with all the board

members, so the entire group works with ease and harmony. “I feel a good leader is one who listens to everyone’s ideas and then works to guide the establishment and realization of appropriate goals.”

“Ultimately, I would like to establish new vitality in the chamber which will then be able to respond to the ebb and flow of business in our communities. By increasing the visibility and viability of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce, growing our membership, and bringing more business to our downtowns, we can build up our chamber of commerce, enhance business in our local communities of Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights. It’s time for us at the chamber to open our doors and embrace the treasures in our midst!” Ms. Romas concluded.
