Family Promise identified short-term care for the baby and facilitated meals, laundry, and childcare for Chloe’s daughter while Chloe recovered from surgery. The family continues to work with Family Promise as they regain stability.

s part of its goal to support local communities, the Suburban Chamber of Commerce awards scholarships to college-bound seniors from the high schools in Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit.

“While our main mission is to support local businesses and downtowns, we also think it is essential to reach out to younger community members and let them know we believe in them and want to help them further their educations,” said Karen Fern Hadley, executive director of the Suburban Chamber. “We are pleased to be able to continue our long tradition of awarding these scholarships, and we wish the recipients the best as they enroll as college freshmen.”

The Class of 2021 recipients, chosen because they showed leadership both academically and within their communities, are: From Governor Livingston High School and headed to The College of New Jersey,

Brian DeSousa founded and serves as president of the school’s Peer2Peer Club, which he said “allows special education students to interact with general education students during lunch.

The goal of this club is to promote inclusive education at Governor Livingston and help improve the social skills of the special education students involved.”

Leaders. While playing varsity tennis, she was also in the Color Guard for the NPHS Marching Band and was selected for membership in the National Italian Honor Society and National Honor Society.

The fluent native Spanish speaker is also vice president of the NPHS Diversity Club, sings in the Select Choir and was part of her school’s Peer Leaders Program.

Summit High School’s

Jeffrey Bello is headed to Kean University.

His school counselor described Jeffrey, who plans a career in law enforcement, as “first to recognize that his will and dedication are the catalysts for his success…I can see him as one of those police officers who will be revered and inspire those in the community that he serves.”

Jeffrey rounded out his academic course choices with selections that included Law, Sociology and Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and was active with the YMCA’s Achievers Program, where his relationship with his mentor has motivated him to mentor younger students.

Jeffrey, according to his school counselor’s recommendation, “thrives on connecting and relating with other people, especially his peers. With his imminent graduation, it will be very difficult to replace him as the ambassador for our school’s Speaker’s Bureau.”

Jeffrey’s goal is to attend college to delve deeper into the social sciences in an attempt to understand people and society better. He will be the first in his family to attend college, and said he seeks to honor his parents’ immigration to the U.S. from Mexico in search of a better life by actualizing their dreams for him.

In addition, Brian was inducted into GL’s Spanish Honor Society, was named to the High Honor Roll every quarter, works part time in the township at Rita’s Italian Ice and has served as a leadership intern working with third and fourth graders at Camp Invention. He noted that experience helped him improve both his leadership and his conflict resolution skills.

hough summer concerts are on hold in New Providence this year, local music fans will be able to attend events in both Berkeley Heights and Summit, and there is such a range of styles being planned that there are events to appeal every taste, from Motown and Soul to Doo Wop and hits of the 70s.

Berkeley Heights The township hosts its outdoor music events on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. When the concerts are at Veterans Memorial Park, they are at 113-205 Plainfield Ave., and others will be at Connell Grove in the Park, 150 Connell Dr. On tap for the coming weeks are: June 30, Revolver, performing music by Don Henley, Cheap Trick, Rod Stewart, Billy Idol, Peter Frampton, Wings, the Black Crowes and others. Summit / New Providence Rotary President Dr. Roz Dorlen recently joined American Red Cross Blood Services representative Meghan Spears in presenting a Certificate of Appreciation to Grand Summit Hotel General Manager Thomas Riccardi in appreciation for the Hotel’s donation of the Grand Ballroom for the recent Rotary sponsored blood bank that resulted in over 40 pints being donated, and over 200 lives being saved.

The club had already hosted one drive on Martin Luther King Day, during Summit’s Day of Service program. The second was held in April at the Hotel.

Due to COVID, we were unable to provide our normal contingent of volunteers, but with the hotel’s help the Red Cross adapted and handled much of the workload. However, the Rotary’s recruitment efforts managed to gather a significant increase in contributions.

Summit Public Art is hosting its first-ever Illumination Night, everyone is invited and admission is free.

The community is invited when the Berkeley Heights YMCA, 59 Locust Ave., hosts its first-ever Kid at Heart Field Day on Sunday, June 27, from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

On Friday, June 18, from 7 to 8 p.m., the launch of the group’s new season kicks off with a Water & Wine Gathering at “What Lifts You,” the mural on the side of 10 Maple St., which is the location of BarBacoa Restaurant, a supporter of the evening’s festivities. (While the gathering is free and all ages are welcome, $10 wine tickets will be available to those who are 21 and older and can show photo ID. Advance reservations are available, or pay at the door if interested in drinking.)

This opportunity to relive childhood fun will feature indoor and outdoor activities set to include dodgeball and other games, snacks and T-shirt tie-dyeing (participants are asked to bring their own cotton shirts).

Also on tap for the afternoon are fitness classes, an open house and tours of the facility, including the fitness center.

At 8 p.m. there will be a free guided art walk (by reservation) departing from 10 Maple St., and from 9 to 10 p.m. on the Village Green at 356 Broad St. is the Illumination, with music and a video installation by artist Sean Capone. No RSVP is required for the Illumination, which will feature hundreds of lighted balloons.

Registration for Field Day is required, and free babysitting will be available by reservation for children ranging in age from six weeks to 12 years old, in the Y’s Kid Zone.

n Berkeley Heights, sidewalks along Plainfield Avenue – spanning from Mountain to Park – are getting a facelift.

Paid for in part by a $410,000 grant from the N.J. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets to Transit Program, the project will allow for reconstruction and expansion of sidewalks in front of Columbia Middle School, with the goals of improving walkability and reducing pedestrian hazards, in addition to creating some sidewalks where there currently are none.

Township officials said the aim is to “safely connect different neighborhoods to the downtown, schools and train station.”

Major portions of the project are slated to begin in late June, after school lets out, and will include: Replacement of an asphalt path on the west side of Plainfield with a new concrete sidewalk.

Removal of trees that are damaging sidewalk portions and have caused safety concerns.

Repair and proper alignment of existing sidewalks.

the east side of Plainfield between Roosevelt and Plainfield.

Installation of new concrete sidewalk on the full west side of Plainfield where needed, and repair of some existing portions.

The state approved the plan, and it was noted sidewalks cannot be installed around existing trees in a township or county right-of-way because then the sidewalks themselves could encroach on private property.

“Being able to execute this large-scale sidewalk is a tremendous opportunity for our town,” said Mayor Angie Devanney. “Plainfield Avenue is a major artery…not only for vehicular traffic but for kids and commuters walking to the downtown area. Residents in this area have been long waiting for improved sidewalks and safer routes in their neighborhoods, to the school and to the train. This project will deliver on that.”

The president of the Township Committee, Jeanne Kingsley, who applied for the grant, said, “Over the years, the township has made investments in pedestrian safety around our schools, such as traffic-calming devices, pedestrian walking signs, flashing pedestrian signs and walking signs. CMS, Mountain Park,

Hughes and Woodruff schools all received Gold Status from New Jersey’s Safe Routes to School Program, which encourages safe routes for kids to walk, bike or use other wheeled devices to get to school. This project is the next investment in such safety improvements.”

Township officials noted residents directly affected by construction – having trees removed or sidewalk work done – have been notified.

The contractor is Cifelli & Son. Preliminary work underway in early June before school lets out is being done to ensure all work is completed by fall.

AGE Eldercare has launched a virtual library on its website, sageeldercare.org.

It includes exclusive SAGE exercise, entertainment and educational videos. Supported by a $10,000 grant from The Grotta Fund, the goal of the library is to ease the loneliness and isolation many older adults and caregivers are continuing to experience due to the pandemic. The library is available to SAGE clients as well as to the public.

Advocating on behalf of the elderly for 100 years, The Grotta Fund for Senior Care is an advisory council fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest. It has a history of supporting organizations that help improve the lives of older adults and their caregivers.

SAGE also received a $10,000 grant from the fund last summer.

“The loneliness that many older adults and caregivers are still experiencing due to COVID-19 is heartbreaking,” said SAGE’s grant writer, Ellen Tepper. “We are deeply appreciative of the Grotta Fund for allowing us to create this engaging selection of content to help provide something fun and entertaining for those who need it.”

Within the library, video topics include chair exercises, gentle yoga and meditation.

The entertainment section ranges from show tunes to Motown hits, while education includes webinars from SAGE’s Your Decisions Matter.

erkeley Heights has been designated a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The designation was achieved because the community met the program’s four requirements: 1.

Having a tree board or department

2. Having in place a tree care ordinance 3. Possessing an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and 4. Hosting an Arbor Day observance accompanied by an official proclamation.

According to Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation, “Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has on a community first-hand.

The trees being planted and cared for by Berkeley Heights are ensuring that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life.” Additionally, Mr. Lambe noted, participating in the program brings residents together and “creates a sense of civic pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.”

Arbor Day Foundation officials noted that if ever there were a time for trees, it is now.

“Communities world-wide are facing issues with air quality, water resources, personal health and well-being, energy use and protection from extreme heat and flooding,” Mr. Lambe said. “The Arbor Day Foundation recently launched the ‘Time for Trees’ initiative to address these issues, with unprecedented goals

of planting 100 million trees in forests and communities and inspiring five million tree planters by 2022.”

Berkeley Heights officials noted that with the Tree City designation, the township has demonstrated its commitment to effective urban forest management and is doing its part to help address these challenges for Berkeley Heights residents now and in the future.

“The page is easy to navigate for both employers and those seeking employment,” said Karen Hadley, executive director of the Chamber.

“Once you open the tab labeled ‘Area Job Postings,’ click the plus sign in the upper right corner to submit a new posting.” Listings feature space for a job description, and can be searched by candidates who will then contact the poster directly.

Mrs. Hadley said the Chamber also welcomes submissions to its website’s calendar of events.

“It is our goal in the future that these events will once again be posted in our magazine, The Collection, but in the meantime, we welcome all to visit the website and post events and community happenings there,” she said.

The nearby Watchung Reservation Sensory Trail is open to all, seven days a week from dawn to dusk, free of charge.

The first of its kind in the county, the trail is described by Union County Commissioners as “the most extensive one in the nation.” It is behind Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside and is designed to provide sensory stimulation and interaction, and to meet the physical, social and cognitive needs of varied age groups.

Accessible to all, the trail is a 0.3-mile loop and features a central gazebo. Interpretive signs include two “talking kiosks” that highlight both the natural and human history of the Watchung Reservation. There are sounds from nature, including birds and insects, and sounds that represent the Lenape Indians, who once occupied the reservation.

The gazebo boasts a sensory play area for children, who are also invited to crawl through log, traverse mushroom steppers and take a stroll on a balance beam that looks like a tree branch.

Musical components along the way include drums and a xylophone, and also available for touch are wheels and balls, plus raised garden beds designed for both touch and smell.

The trail stretches from Union County’s Trailside Center into surrounding fields and includes two outdoor classrooms where naturalists are able to gather groups and make presentations.

In addition, the area features a 0.2-mile Braille loop with guide ropes.
