At The Connection, it doesn’t matter what a person’s economic, racial, occupational or cultural background is. The Connection belongs to its members, and it is their community.

The 1990s saw the extension of youth and adult enrichment opportunities, and a comprehensive program for children with special needs was pioneered, along with a collaboration with Our House to host social opportunities for adults with special needs. The 2000s saw The Connection working with the Summit Public Schools to offer after care and kindergarten enrichment, and in 2015 the staff and volunteers spearheaded “When Working Isn’t Working,” a forum with the Junior League of Summit to raise awareness and support for local people who are economically at risk.

Even before its incorporation in 1922 as the YWCA of Summit, the spirit of The Connection began as a movement of caring, perceptive women who worked for collective changes to improve individual lives, families and society as a whole.

The diversity of The Connection is its strength, and its scholarship program ensures that anyone can participate in programs, regardless of economic circumstance.

In the 1920s, the staff and volunteers organized some of the first local clubs for girls and business women, and by the 1940s they were providing English as a Second Language courses for those displaced following World War II. Community forums on race, world hunger and juvenile justice were hosted during the 1960s, and in the 1980s the site cooperated with Overlook to establish the Heart-to-Heart cardiac rehab program.

More recently, The Connection has tackled – in partnership with other local organizations – food insecurity in the region, and is working to combat hunger and homelessness.

“Our trustees, volunteers and staff consider it a privilege to continue The Connection's 100 years of service and leadership in the greater Summit community,” said Wendy Graeb, the organization’s executive director. “We are more committed than ever to our mission and to accomplish even more in our second century, so we remain the place where women, men and children from all walks of life come together to strengthen individual lives and our shared community.”

NP Fuel has two local locations, 50 South St. and 1789 Springfield Ave., both in New Providence.

The throwback décor reminds customers of a classic, fullservice, family-run station from the 60s, with classic old time pick-up trucks parked outside and 60s music blasting from the retro speakers.

Since March 22, 2011, NP Fuel has received an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, recognizing factors such as the length of time the business has been operating. Don’s staff are proud to meet BBB accreditation standards.

Pumps are open seven days a week – Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Auto Repair shop is staffed by professional mechanics with a wealth of experience and includes three generations of Murphys whose knowledge, experience and expert advice is hard to match.

Murph Farm, run by Don and his wife Eliza, is at 49 Meyersville Road in Green Village. It features tomatoes, cucumbers and other seasonal fruits and vegetables. They also sell homemade honey year-round. Don and Eliza even rescued a hive of honey bees from a local apartment complex to add to their colony. Come out and taste the fruits of their labors and meet the newest Murphy entrepreneurs, their two daughters!

ore than 100 local residents, employees and dignitaries gathered on May 17 at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit to celebrate at the Tying the Communities Together awards dinner hosted by the Suburban Chambers of Commerce.

The evening began with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner and the presentation of awards to individuals and companies recognized for dedication and far-reaching efforts in their communities.

After not hosting the event in person for two years due to the pandemic, Suburban Chambers members and guests enjoyed great food, networking and a festive celebration of community.

Master of ceremonies for the event was Senator Jon Bramnick.

The Overlook Foundation, the non-profit, private organization that supports Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center, kicked off a public campaign in May to raise funds for a multi-phase expansion and enhancement project.

Overlook Ahead will support a plan to restructure 90 percent of patient care spaces, including new medical infrastructure in every room, a tripling of the number of private rooms, several new units and eight more operating rooms. The plan includes 456,000 total square feet of new and renovated space at Overlook’s main campus in Summit, at a cost of $169 million.

“For more than 115 years, Overlook has stood ready to assist those in need,” said Clelia Biamonti, executive director of the Overlook Foundation.

“Rarely has our commitment to and impact on the community been tested more than over the last 26 months, yet through the compassion and resilience of our team members, Overlook has emerged stronger. We have learned new ways to care for patients, and through this campaign, are preparing ourselves for what the future has in store.”

The campaign will seek to support the following projects: With some 15,000 surgeries performed each year at Overlook, the Reeves Same Day Surgery Center will be completely renovated and expanded to include two additional surgery suites, a refurbished family waiting room with private consultation area and enhanced pre- and post-op units. For inpatient surgeries, multiple new stateof-the-art surgical suites are planned.

include expanded space featuring new cesarean-section suites, birthing suites and all-private postpartum rooms with enhanced proximity to a renovated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

A redesigned inpatient neuroscience unit will bring together the entire neuroscience team, with all single patient rooms. Overlook’s neuro ICU will be expanded, as will acute stroke and spine surgery capabilities, while a new epilepsy monitoring unit will provide 24/7 clinical responses to patients with seizure disorders.

Dedicated neurosurgical operating rooms will handle the most complex vascular, brain tumor and skull base procedures, and new outpatient space will be home to neurologists, neurosurgeons and their multi-disciplinary teams.

Newly designed private rooms in intensive care/critical care units will be larger and more technology-enabled to provide for the care needed by patients whose conditions are not stable enough for transfer to a regular room.

Construction of a new cardiac unit with single rooms will allow Overlook to offer intensive, intermediate and/or standard acute care. An expansion of the services provided by the Thomas Glasser Caregivers Center, to include a satellite center on the new unit, will foster an improved healing environment for both patients and families.

IT’S GOING TO BE A SUMMER FULL OF FUN IN BOROUGH As mayor of Summit, I am always looking for ways to make our community an even better place to live, work and visit.

Sustainability is an issue close to my heart, and we are always looking to make improvements in this area across all city departments whenever possible.

I am thrilled to share a new initiative with you, a food composting program at the Transfer Station. As of June 1, residents with Transfer Station permits can bring food scraps to be composted. If your home is anything like mine, food scraps make up a large percentage of what goes into the garbage can in the kitchen. With this new program, residents will have the opportunity to divert all of that from the waste stream, and in turn, reduce the city’s tipping fees for the trash that is collected weekly from city households.

graduates! Go get ‘em! Coming off a moving Memorial Day service, and into June with so many wonderful events happening, here is an update on the happenings around Berkeley Heights.

We are making great strides on the green space front. At the former site of Berkeley Caterers the contract has been signed by Union County with the landowner taking the Memorandum of Understanding to a full contract, ensuring that site will be saved as parkland.

We are still working on redeveloping Peppertown Park. The township slowed down the process to contemplate the realigning of Sherman Avenue to become a pedestrian- and bike-friendly corridor. The town hired engineering and planning professionals to realize this vision. Stay tuned for a presentation at a June council meeting.

Congressman Tom Malinowski held a meeting of regional mayors to discuss Passaic River flooding.

Deputy County Manager Amy Wagner will coordinate an ongoing coalition of mayors to work toward de-snagging and de-silting the river. The congressman committed to setting up a meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers to help facilitate these urgent needs.

Sidewalks are happening! The township was awarded $517,000 to create safe walking routes along Snyder from Woodruff to Hughes School.

Specifically, money will be used to construct sidewalks along the south side of the intersection of Locust and Snyder, up to Hughes. A big thank you to Council President Jeanne Kingsley and Township Administrator Liza Viana for their work

This program will operate on a trial basis for six months, after which Division of Public Works staff will evaluate it to decide whether to make it permanent.

We are looking forward to seeing residents take advantage of this exciting program. To view a list of accepted items, please visit cityofsummit.org/ compost. Items being collected include coffee grounds, fruits and vegetables, cereal, grains, eggshells, seafood shells, nuts and seeds.

We kicked off the season with an in-person Memorial Day parade. Along with Assemblywoman Michele Matsikoudis, we were honored to welcome the N.J. Veterans Network, in addition to the wonderful tributes hosted by our Recreation Department in partnership with our American Legion Post #433. Our Community Pool opened, with many upgrades and improvements. We look forward to the return of our July 3 Independence Day celebration that will include a fireworks display.

Summer Concerts in the Park are back on Thursday nights in July, and we have National Night Out on Aug. 2.

I would also like to send heartfelt congratulations to this year’s graduates from Summit schools. You should feel proud of the hard work that has brought you to this point. I am wishing you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

New Providence has formed a Mental Health Advocacy and Education Committee, with the goals of reducing the stigma of mental health, promoting understanding through education, advocacy, raising awareness and connecting people to resources.

With gas prices being what they are, now is the perfect time to go fullon local. Walk or bicycle instead of driving. Take a stroll downtown, to the pool, to our Community Garden and all our beautiful parks. The Senior Affairs Committee hosted a successful information fair. We plan to host another, bringing together organizations and agencies from the town and county. Designated parking spots for Purple Heart recipients at Town Hall have been created.

The township is seeking state-wide “We Salute Our Veterans” designation. We hope to report back in July with good news.

The Economic Development Committee met with our Acting Construction Code official to discuss how we can better service the needs of existing and future businesses. Thoro Entertainment is volunteering to develop an economic development video promoting the township using Berkeley Heights celebrities -- Heather O’Rourke from ABC News and WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert – as voice overs.

The Truth Community Healing & Inclusion Committee helped to kick off our first AAPI Heritage Month celebration. Congratulation to Angus and Natalie Chin and Linda Meehan for a great event. Our little poets and musicians were the highlight. We raised the Pride flag in honor of Pride Month for the first time in the township.

We are working to ensure every resident of Berkeley Heights feels welcome and included.

This commission-based position features a flexible schedule, and is ideal for someone who would like to help local businesses grow through print advertising and chamber membership options.

The advertising sales director manages existing accounts and seeks and develops new advertisers and chamber members. Previous experience in customer service and sales is helpful, and the director must be able to work well independently.

Magazine experience is a plus, but not required. Training is provided.

he Suburban Chamber of Commerce, for more than 50 years, has sponsored a scholarship program that supports college-bound seniors from the public high schools in Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit.

While it is our main mission to support local businesses and downtowns, we also think it is essential to reach out to younger community members and let them we know we believe in them and want to help them further their educations,” said Karen Hadley, executive director of the chamber. “We are happy to continue our tradition of awarding these scholarships, and we wish the winners the best as they navigate their lives as college students.”

The Class of 2022 recipients, chosen because they showed leadership both academically and within their respective communities, are: From Governor Livingston High School

Abigail Pereira will attend Drew University this fall. In addition to academic achievements that include membership in the National Honors Society and the Math Honors Society, Abigail played JV, varsity and club volleyball, and has committed to play the sport at Drew.

At GL, Abigail was a member of the Model United Nations Club, the Student Movement Against Cancer, the Interact (Volunteering) Club and Save the Children of the Developing World, and served on the Relay for Life Event Leadership Team to assist the American Cancer Society.

In addition to working as a cashier and stocker at Pet Supplies Plus, Abigail is a self-employed volleyball instructor and math tutor..

my high school. I led volunteers and peers in identifying the plants in the courtyard. After this, we installed signs with the names of those plants and also planted flowers. Through this project, the courtyard was turned into a more welcoming and educational environment for the dozens of students who are in there daily.”

Other extracurricular activities have included membership in the Computer Programming Club, for which he served as president, being a team member for Bridge Building and earning third place in Union County in the Trans Options Annual Hydrogen Car Challenge.

Summit High School’s

Carter Frey will attend Indiana University. Academically, Carter described his favorite classes as US History 2, Algebra II and Money, Markets and Investing. His passion for sports – he played baseball all four years of high school – and interest in what’s happening around the globe and with the stock market have led him to consider a career in business management or sports management.

Beyond academics, Carter has sung as a tenor with the Summit High School choir since freshman year, served as page editor of the school paper and founded SIBS, a club for SHS students whose siblings have disabilities.

Carter’s guidance counselor, Lynnette Diaz, described him as “one of the most mature and responsible students I have had the pleasure of working with. He is always willing to challenge himself, push harder to meet his goals and be open-minded to try new things. Carter is very passionate about leading by example and helping others understand that even though one might look or behave differently, everyone has a gift and should be treated with respect.”

From New Providence High School,

Haitham Awad has enrolled at NJIT. His academic achievements include taking various AP level courses, plus World Literature, Financial Literacy and Graphic Design 1 and 2.

Haitham achieved Life Rank as a Boy Scout, and is a prospective Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, he said, “I beautified the courtyard at

Wharton Arts will present its first community theater program for adults this month when it stages “Defying Gravity,” written by Jane Anderson and directed by Jackie Jacobi.

The play examines the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster through the experiences of Teacher, who died in the crash, and her daughter Elizabeth. It weaves through time, going from life on the day of the crash to Elizabeth’s life 20 years later.

Performances are at the Wharton Arts Black Box Theater on June 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 8 p.m., and on June 19 and 26 at 2 p.m.

Tickets, available via whartonarts.org, are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors.

The Summit-New Providence Rotary has awarded scholarships to six students -- five from Summit High School and one from New Providence High School -- based on academic achievement, community service and financial need.

Recipients and the colleges/universities they plan to attend are:

respective college or university. There were two special awards honoring the memory of two former Rotarians, Chandler Coddington and Wilbur Nelson, both of whom contributed significantly to their communities. Michael Katz, chair of the scholarship committee, made the presentations.

The Summit-New Providence Rotary is in its centennial year, having begun on Oct. 22, 1922. Since 1926, the organization has been awarding college scholarships to local area students. In addition to the scholarship program, the Rotary has been involved in numerous other community-based activities, ranging from recognizing local residents and organizations for contributions to the community to several international projects through which it helped finance two educational facilities in India.

Currently, the Rotary supplies specially-designed dictionaries to all third graders in the Summit and New Providence school districts and this year launched a project to provide all middle schoolers with special annotated copies of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights to be used in concert with a newly-mandated requirement by the state of New Jersey to teach civics to all middle school students.

TOWNSHIP’S LIBRARY SETS SAIL FOR ‘OCEANS OF POSSIBILITIES’ THIS SUMMER

oin the Berkeley Heights Public Library this summer as it embarks on an ocean adventure, exploring all of the possibilities available at a public library. The library’s summer kicks off on Wednesday, June 22, and runs through Aug. 19.

There will be summer reading clubs for children, teens and adults. Register in person or via bhplnj.readsquared.com.

In addition, the library is sponsoring summer reading bingo for adults. Bingo cards will be available at the circulation desk beginning June 22.

The library now offers three different ways to print from phones, tablets, laptops or home computers to the library’s printers, in either black and white or color. “Pick up and pay for your print jobs at the print station terminal within three days, during library open hours,” staff said. Color pages are 15 cents each, while black and white are 10 cents. Visit the library’s web page for details.
