est-selling author Isabel Wilkerson will be the featured speaker for a free community lecture via livestream hosted by Temple Emanu-El in Westfield on Thursday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m The author of 2020’s “Caste: The Origins from Our Discontents” will draw from her research into the history of caste systems, done as she delved into America’s treatment of Native Americans and African Americans. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Ms. Wilkerson is also the author of “The Warmth of Other Suns” and has taught at Princeton, Emory and Boston universities.

Temple Emanu-El’s speaker last year was social justice lawyer Bryan Stevenson, author of “Just Mercy.” The annual Temple Emanu-El Kol Tzedek Speaker Series has as its goal to address topics of importance to the betterment of the world and sharing how all can move forward with hope and action. Temple representatives explained that “kol tzedek” means “righteous voice,” and said lecturers in the series will be acclaimed authors from their respective fields of specialization. Events will be timed to coordinate with Passover season.

RIBBON CUTTING PLANNED AT CITY’S NEW TINY FOREST Summit Mayor Nora Radest will perform a ribbon cutting ceremony at the grand opening of the Tiny Forest, located behind the Summit Community Center at 100 Morris Ave. on Saturday, April 2, at 9 a.m.

After the ceremony, community volunteers will be planting more than 150 trees in the forest. Signs with information about the different tree species will be added to the Tiny Forest throughout the spring. This project is being funded by grants from the Summit Conservancy and New Jersey American Water.

GOAL OF THESE BROTHERS? SIMPLE: MAKE SENIORS SMILE The mission of a student-run Summit effort begun during the pandemic is a basic one. Rowan Carpenter, who has been joined by his brother Sutton, aims to bring cheer to older people who may sometimes feel isolated.

Rowan launched Make a Senior Smile to gather items for care packages delivered to local senior citizens through SAGE Eldercare’s Meals on Wheels program.

Over the past year, at Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, hundreds of cheerfully decorated packages containing items ranging from snacks and handmade pottery pieces to blankets and sweets have been delivered to area residents, all thanks to the generosity of friends and neighbors.

The drop-off point is the front porch of a Summit home.

Rowan said, “Suggested items include granola and protein bars, single-serving cereal, cookies, crackers, oatmeal, low-sodium soups and candy. Because these items are for seniors, lowsodium/low-sugar items are preferred, but not necessary. Others items like homemade greeting cards are also welcome.”

he Summit College Club will resume its annual Book Sale in April.

“We have held the Book Sale for more than 50 years,” said Lynne Rogerson, president of Summit College Club. “It was our major fundraising event by far, and it required a lot of time to organize and prepare. So, for two years, during the pandemic, we’ve repeatedly prepared and then held our breath and hoped. This year, at last, the Book Sale is going to happen.”

As in the past, the sale will fill American Legion Post 433 next to the library at 357 Elkwood Ave. in New Providence. Readers with books to donate should bring them April 18 from 1 to 7 p.m. and April 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The sale accepts a variety of media in good condition: books, CDs, DVDs, etc. Not accepted are encyclopedias, magazines, manuals and textbooks.

The sale will run April 21 - 24. Nearly all items will range from 50 cents to $2 each. Opening day, April 21 from 9 – 2, has a $25 admission charge; although everyone is welcome, the customers on that day are typically book sellers.

April 22 – 24 admittance is free. Hours are Friday the 22nd, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday the 23rd, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Bag Day, from 10 to 4. On Sunday, readers may fill a grocery bag with books of any type for $5 or with electronic media for $10.

Masks are required to enter during donations and the sale.

Volunteers are welcome. Men and women are needed to gather, categorize and arrange books before the sale, and to straighten during the sale.

THE GOVERNOR LIVINGSTON - NEW PROVIDENCE ice hockey team defeated the Morris Knolls Golden Eagles to win their first-ever State Championship during the Public C state final on March 7 at the Prudential Center in Newark.

The 2-0 victory left the Highlanders 18-6-1 for the season.

To get to the final game, Morris Knolls had defeated teams that included Bernards, Colonia and Verona, and Governor Livingston scored victories over schools including Marlboro and Wayne Hills.

SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL girls earned the school its first state title in program history after a 13-1 season when they swam their way to the NJSIAA Public B title in Deptford in late February.

School records were set, personal best times were achieved and the undefeated 400 relay squad of Dagny Donaldson, Caitlin Fagan, Molly Fagan and Sidney Arcella continued to dominate.

Number 4 Summit accumulated 10 first-place nods to defeat Number 12 Mainland for the title.

In addition, the Hilltoppers went 1-2-3 in both the 100 Free and the 100 Breastroke.

Dear Summit Community, please join me and the Summit Police Department in partnership with the Union County Board of Commissioners, the Union County Prosecutor's Office and 24 other law enforcement agencies in Union County in a county-wide donation drive for the people of Ukraine. A donation box has been established in the Summit Police Department lobby at City Hall, 512 Springfield Ave. Members of the public are invited to bring donations of first aid supplies, toiletries, flashlights, blankets, batteries, clothing, shoes, diapers, formula and more. The program will run for the foreseeable future while continued aid is needed. Specific needs requested include aspirin, paper goods, cough medicine, iodine, sleeping bags, sewing supplies, masks, gloves and thermal blankets.

This donation drive is made possible through partnerships with law enforcement agencies and local Polish and Ukrainian organizations. I encourage you to participate and thank you in advance for doing so.

Mayor Nora Radest Summit

‘REOPENING’ OF NEW PROVIDENCE CELEBRATED We welcome spring and look forward to all our wonderful community has to offer. The borough is fully open after two long, challenging years!

We are so looking forward to an inperson Memorial Day Parade this year, and to resuming all of our many other community gathering events and activities.

Many projects are in full swing throughout New Providence, including utility companies upgrading our infrastructure. It is a long, uncomfortable and inconvenient process, but please hang in there and be patient while this important work progresses. Expect periodic road closures and continued disruptions.

We appreciate your understanding. It will be worth it.

Expect to see traffic and pedestrian safety improvements throughout the borough. Please be aware of multiple speed limit changes! The Police Traffic Division’s borough-wide Traffic and Safety Plan has been completed to enhance safety, accessibility and mobility around New Providence.

The year is shaping up to feel like what the new normal will be, with mask mandates being lifted in schools. Town Council meetings will resume in person, and our mask mandate in the building will also be lifted.

a Week Traffic Enforcement Campaign to help reduce hazardous driving. The purpose is to coordinate education and enforcement efforts on one street each week, with the goal of reducing speeding and other dangerous traffic violations through an established and ongoing police presence. Please remind family, friends, neighbors and co-workers of multiple speed limit changes throughout the borough and to drive with care.

Residents may have heard about actions taken by the council related to the Municipal Complex. Let me provide some context. The Berkeley Heights Mayor and Township Council have issued what is called a Notice of Default to Epic Management Inc. and Epic's performance bond company, Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America. Epic is now required to complete these punch list items, which range from minor chips in some of the doors to leaks in the library. If it fails to do so, subject to certain extensions, Epic's performance bond company (or an insurance company for builders), Travelers Casualty will be obligated to ensure the work is completed or pay the township to have the work completed.

The New Providence Municipal Alliance will conduct “Every 15 Minutes,” a program devoted to educating high school students about the dangers of drug and alcohol use while driving. The Municipal Alliance is also focusing on mental health wellness for our community.

We cannot more strongly stress the importance of shopping locally and supporting our wonderful and generous small businesses who continually support us. Our business community is the backbone of our borough. Please shop New Providence.

It was an exciting day while we watched demolition of the Berkeley Caterers structure. The property owner negotiated, as part of the county’s acquisition for green space, to complete the demo work, clearing the way the development of a passive park.

The Senior Affairs Committee met and discussed how to roll out the 2022 goals as part of the 7 “buckets” for

senior programming: Recreation, Health, Public Safety, Entertainment, Education, Socialization and Communication.

The Economic Development Council continues to thrive under the leadership of Brian Kraut and received positive feedback on the effectiveness of the Technical Review Committee as it relates to assisting the proposed bakery on Springfield Avenue and the Connell development.

The Truth Community Healing & Inclusion committee introduced our new municipal prosecutor, Moshood Muftau, and elected Kyle Brogden as our new chairman. The TCHI had a fruitful discussion on better developing and defining victim rights/ advocacy under the direction of Ritu Chandra. The Committee hosted the first annual Black History Month flag raising ceremony, with Frank Bolden bestowing the honors of raising the flag.

Council will host budget hearings for the public. The administration and CFO continue to work with our council budget group to put together the budget for full council consideration in a few weeks. There are still some uncertainties, however, as they relate to how municipalities can use and report the use of federal American Recovery Plan funds. Communities all over the state are in limbo.

Planners Declare Downtown Summit A ‘Great Place’ Downtown Summit has been chosen one of the 2021 Great Places in New Jersey by the state chapter of the American Planning Association.

Each year, the NJAPA awards a downtown that represents what it describes as “the gold standard of exemplary character, quality and planning as a great place. Awardwinning towns possess a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement and a vision for tomorrow.”

Mayor Nora Radest described herself as “thrilled to receive this designation,” though she noted, “We have always known that our wonderful and accessible downtown is one of the greatest

places in New Jersey.” SDI Board of Trustees chair Bob Conway said downtown Summit “is absolutely one of the great places in New Jersey,” and continued, “We share this recognition with everyone who has thoughtfully invested in our downtown’s beautification, preservation and economic and social vitality.”

SDI director Nancy Adams spoke of downtown’s “lively art, shopping and restaurant scene, providing visitors with a true sense of place and community.”

Previous award winners include Morristown, Westfield, Cranford and Lambertville.
