Math isn’t
fun in Z y k i r’s house .
The fourth grader struggles with his lessons, but math is just one of the trials Zykir has confronted. Not long ago, his family faced homelessness. Fortunately, they found Family Promise. Family Promise helped his mom, Roneeka, obtain steady employment, hone her budgeting skills, and achieve stability. Before long, the family moved into their own home. Now, they make use of support services when needed, such as a new academic tutoring program. The Family Promise Club at Summit High School serves local families battling homelessness. Recognizing the challenges of remote learning during the Covid pandemic, the club developed a virtual tutoring program for elementary and middle school students at Family Promise. “It’s rewarding to work with these students and see them improving,” says club Vice President Leah Competiello. In addition to boosting grades and study habits, the program increases understanding about the crisis of family homelessness. Club President Josh Sacks notes, “Given all the families have to deal with, [we’ve seen how] it can be harder to focus on school, to learn and keep up.” Adds Hope Basaman, the club’s volunteer coordinator, “A lot of people think [homelessness] just happens in cities, but it hits home when you realize it can be a lot closer.” Statistics show children battling homelessness may struggle more in school – dropout rates, special needs, and grade repetition are significantly higher than among their peers. For Zykir, the tutoring replaces support he would normally receive in school. The program has been so successful, the club anticipates moving to in-person sessions once Covid restrictions are eased. Zykir’s mom, who worked so hard to help her family overcome unimaginable obstacles, is grateful for the program. “When I ask Zykir if he understands his work more, he says yes,” says Roneeka. “I can see his grades have improved since tutoring began. I love Family Promise!”

Memorial Day has been a mainstay in New Providence dating back to 1954. A parade down Springfield Avenue is followed by a gathering on the lawn of the Memorial Library on Elkwood Avenue that is attended by an appreciative crowd of all ages every year…until 2020. Due to ongoing concerns about Covid, borough officials have made the decision to cancel the commemoration for 2021, too, but in cooperation with American Legion Post #433, the borough is compiling a video of past parades as a way of saying a proper “thank you” to all men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice. New Providence Memorial Day photos from 1954-2019 may be considered for the video, and may include any aspect of the parade – community groups, the marching band, military members, wreath-laying ceremonies, etc. For details about the project, or to inquire about making a submission, send an email to recdept@newprov.org or call Allison Smith, the borough’s community activities director, at 665-8258.

orn in Boston in 1860, Frances Doane came to Summit in 1889 upon her marriage to Henry Twombly, residing on Woodland Avenue until they constructed a home at 226 Hobart Ave., known as being the site during the Revolutionary War of Signal Beacon #10. It was constructed by General George Washington’s soldiers to warn of British troops advancing by way of Elizabeth and Springfield towards his Morristown encampment, and today a plaque embedded in stone in a low wall in the home’s front yard serves as a reminder of what once took place there. Upon her arrival in Summit, Mrs. Twombly quickly became involved with volunteerism. She was active at Central Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Fortnightly Club, helped create the Neighborhood House (now home of the Summit Antique Center and once a settlement house created to benefit immigrants from countries such as Syria who came to work in Summit’s silk mills in the early 1900s) and founded the Town Improvement

estimated 50 sweaters each year for “the overseer of the poor for distribution to needy families.” According to records in the archives at the Summit Historical Society, upon her March 1942 death, Mrs. Twombly’s friend Clausine M. MacNeille penned a memorial essay for a Summit newspaper that noted the city had lost one of its “most valuable and most loved citizens.” It paid tribute to Mrs. Twombly having “early identified with various civic movements, which was an independent act in those days.”
Association, of which she served as president for 17 years. A number of T.I.A. initiatives were eventually taken over by the city, including removal of snow, ashes and garbage. Mrs. Twombly also served on the Playground Committee, a volunteer group that preceded the organization of the Board of Recreation Commission, now Summit’s Department of Community Programs. It was the major role she played in the creation of Soldiers’ Memorial Field on Ashland Road that earned Mrs. Twombly the nickname as Summit’s “Mother of Recreation.” Created in memory of Summit military members lost in service during World War I, the field has, in addition to a walking track, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts and practice fields. It is visited every day by hundreds – some days thousands -- of area residents and is home to the city’s annual July 4 celebration.
Mrs. MacNeille wrote of how her friend was part of a small group in 1909 that organized and ran a playground in town, and that as additional such sites were constructed in Summit, Mrs. Twombly used “to drive around to each playground every day during the summer and so became acquainted with the work and the people connected with it – children, supervisors, workers, policemen, parents and all.” But, Mrs. MacNeille wrote, “Her greatest talent, perhaps, was a gift for friendship. Her devotion and loyalty to her friends was beautiful, and she made friends wherever she went. Anyone, in any kind of trouble, or in need of counsel, could go to Mrs. Twombly for advice and help, and no one went away without receiving a sympathetic hearing, encouragement and assistance of some

sort. Perhaps this was her most valuable contribution to the welfare of this city, which she loved so much, and for which she has done more than we shall ever know. She will be missed acutely.” In 1939, the Twomblys had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and upon her death three years later at home after what was described in newspaper accounts as “a short period of illness,” Mrs. Twombly was survived by a son, Edward, and three grandsons, Doane, Gilmer and Edward Jr., in addition, to her husband, Henry Bancroft Twombly.

The New Jersey Dance Theatre Ensemble, based in downtown Summit, provides artistic excellence in pre-professional dance education and performances. Celebrating its 52nd anniversary season, it has been led by artistic director Nancy Turano since 1994. Brooke has been accepted to George Mason University, which granted her a full scholarship to pursue a BFA in dance.

ew Jersey Dance Theatre Ensemble dancer Brooke Katsafados, a senior at Ocean County Vocational Technical School who resides in Point Pleasant, has received the Governor’s Award for Arts Education: Student Award for Artistic Excellence.

“This year has been about overcoming obstacles and finding solutions,” Brooke said. “One must dig deep and be determined to realize your dreams.” Brooke joined the NJDTE in 2019, and was featured in recent performances of “Balli di Primavera” in works by Paul Taylor. “Cloven Kingdom” was staged by 20-year Paul Taylor veteran Michelle Fleet. The performance also featured new works by Christopher Bloom of Ballet

Hispanico and excerpts of “Paquita,” staged by Alexandra Gonzalez, NJDTE’s rehearsal director. Brooke has also been featured soloist in the Ensemble’s production of “The Nutcracker” as Harlequin, Arabian, Marzipan and Snowflake. The Governor’s Awards in Arts Education launched in 1980, designed to promote awareness in and appreciation of the arts, and they recognize the winners’ creativity, leadership and talent. Each year, awards go to approximately 20 educators and 80 students. National and state-wide organizations select the students for their work in creative writing, speech, dance, music, theater and visual arts, and honor leaders for their exceptional commitment and contribution to arts education. Residents are invited to complete a short on-line survey on the New Providence town website (newprov. org) to share their level of interest regarding compost. Borough officials said they are in the early stages of exploring a pilot composting program, and at this point in time want to gauge interest. Participating households would be provided with bins into which they could place food waste, and at 1-2 week intervals, a West Orange-based firm called Java’s Compost would retrieve the waste to convert it into compost. “Food waste is a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from landfills,” borough officials noted. “By composting, you can help to fight climate change by reducing your carbon footprint and our town’s carbon footprint as a whole. 25 percent of what we throw away is actually compostable. Compost also makes for better and healthier crops, and can lead us towards a more sustainable future.” Millburn has launched a six-month trial program through Java’s Compost. Residents in that township paid a $50 fee to take part. The New Providence on-line survey asks residents for information such as contact information, street address, how many family members and pets are in the household, whether or not the residents might have interest in at-home composting and a price range respondents might be willing to pay to take part in a four-month trial. taff at area senior centers have adapted, have adopted proper precautions and are offering varied social and athletic activities, in addition to events and classes occurring solely virtually.
Each week, Mayor Angie Devanney records a call deployed to her senior constituents. She includes Covid news, upcoming Township Committee meeting topics, library updates and seasonal resident services. To be added to the list, send an email to seniors@ bhtwp.com or call 464-2700, ext. 2114. This spring, there are exercise classes being offered especially for older community members. On Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. is a Zoom class for which the link is sent weekly. Wednesday mornings from 10 to 10:45 is an in-person class at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Connell Park. Participants must call or email weekly to attend. Also on Wednesdays at the hotel, at 11 a.m. until noon, is an event called Senior Snacks and Social, which features tea and coffee, pastries and a guided

discussion group on various topics. It is not necessary to attend the exercise class to take part in the social. Every Friday, there is an additional in-person exercise class at the Embassy Suites from 10 to 10:45 a.m. This class, too, requires weekly registration. Though the DeCorso Center is closed and in-person programming remains suspended, the New Providence Senior Citizens offer a variety of virtual programs. For sign-up details and updates, visit newprov.org/seniors or call 665-0046. All borough residents 65 and older may participate in Zoom exercise classes by registering via decorsocenter@newprov.org. Courses include Chair Yoga, In Control, Exercise with Arthritis, Balance & Conditioning, Tai Chi, Strong You and Zumba. Bingo is offered as a call-in event on Fridays at 11 a.m., and the Senior Shuttle makes Shop Rite trips on Tuesday mornings. Reservations must be made via phone on Mondays. Assorted programs and speakers are also being featured via Zoom. Recent topics have included a

book club, brain games, terrarium creation, medication management for older adults, sharing culture through food and memoir writing. Pre-registration is required. Seniors in New Providence are also invited to call the rectory of Our Lady of Peace Church, 464-7607, and ask to leave a message for someone from the food pantry. The call will be returned, and food will be delivered to the caller’s home.
Annual membership in the Summit Seniors is $10 for city residents 55 and older, and a number of programs at the Community Center are available to members. They include Gentle Chair Yoga on Mondays and Fridays, Tai Chi on Wednesdays, Forever Fit on Tuesdays and weekday open play of Mah Jongg and other card games. For program details and updates on Community Center events, call 277-2932. Currently the center is being used as a regional Covid vaccination site. Summit’s older residents are also invited to make use of the Senior Connections Bus, for which reservations must be made by 4:15 p.m. the day before (277-2932). Weekly destinations include Shop Rite, the New Providence Farmers Market store, downtown Summit and special trips every Tuesday.

ertainly, managing a global pandemic only 14 half months into my administration is not something I expected! The early weeks I spent most of my days on four separate calls with the Governor’s Office, Union County, my local OEM and Township Council leadership. Initially, I had grand plans by joining my mom’s book club with friends, but only a week into the pandemic, I fell behind in my book -- never to catch up due to the pandemic workload. Most days I did work out. As an outdoor runner, I need to go for specific types of runs on certain days to help me “think” and get those endorphins flowing. As many other families took time to cook homemade meals, my family received the raw end of that deal, and we ate more

takeout than ever in 2020! But in 2021, we are back on track eating healthy. My family certainly kept me grounded and going, with pseudo proms, social distanced high school graduation, the Last Dance baseball tournament, softball games and, yes, we adopted a puppy. Today, connecting with my female friends is inspiring me and spurring hope for the future. Here is what I learned this year: I renewed my love of cooking. Went through a legging phase, but did miss my work clothes from time to time — just not high heels. Remembered dogs are so very therapeutic. Found out just how funny my kids are — especially when making fun of me. Truly appreciated vacation. Realized outdoor dining is outstanding. Acknowledged I don’t have patience for

uring these challenging times of isolation, I have been intentional in stepping out for fresh air between tasks (even on rainy days), building up an indoor plant collection and calling friends/family to check in. A combination of cut flowers from a local grocer and potted leafy plants from Viburnum Designs has brought clean air and cheer to our new home.
lthough the lockdown was difficult, I did have a chance to spend more quality time with my immediate family and catch up on some reading. y most treasured job is being a mother and a grandmother, and I try to make that a priority. My day job, as Mayor of Summit, especially in the last year, has decreased my time with my children and grandchildren. he Suburban Chamber of Commerce has launched a free online job posting page on its website, suburbanchambers.org. Access is available to all. “The page is easy to navigate for both employers and those seeking employment,” said Karen Hadley, executive director of the Chamber. “Once you open the tab labeled ‘Area Job Postings,’ click the plus sign in the upper right corner to submit a new posting.” Listings feature space for a job description, and can be searched by candidates who will then contact the poster directly. Mrs. Hadley said the Chamber also welcomes submissions to its website’s calendar of events. “It is our goal in the future that these events will once again be posted in our magazine, The Collection, but in the meantime, we welcome all to visit the website and post events and community happenings there,” she said.
