he goal of GRACE (Giving and Receiving Assistance for our Community’s Essentials) is to provide its clients with nutrient-dense produce, dairy and prepared food. During the pandemic, that effort has been expanded to include basic essentials like cleaning products, and the nonprofit’s need base has expanded – by more than five times.

Under the umbrella of the Junior League of Summit, GRACE was founded by Summit native Amanda Parrish Block in 2016 after a study showed that one in six students in Summit’s public schools lacked access to fresh, nutritional foods. In summer 2019, the effort had grown to assist 107 families every week. In the warm weather months of 2020, the client roster grew to more than 500 families coming to Summit’s Cornog

and GRACE relies on donations from the Summit Farm Market, local businesses and the Community FoodBank, which coincidentally was founded by another Summit resident, Kathleen DiChiara. The GRACE effort expanded during COVID-19 to offer necessities including cleaning wipes, sanitizer, disinfectants, toothpaste, baby wipes, size 3-6 diapers, pasta and canned tuna, salmon, chicken and beef. Also in demand are one- or two-pound packages of rice, dried beans and other shelf-stable food.

Fresh produce is welcome on Mondays and Tuesdays, and community members are also asked to share any job opportunities they may know about.

Also at the center is The GRACE Annex, a refrigerator and freezer stocked on a regular basis for self-selection. Shoppers are asked to write their initials on a clipboard and note the size of their families.

Volunteers are sought for a variety of GRACE-related tasks. There are pickups at the Hillside Community FoodBank on Saturday and Monday mornings, where produce and dairy items are selected and brought back to Summit. Food set-up takes place at the field house on Tuesday mornings, and distribution is Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.

rom piled-high pastrami sandwiches for police officers and meatloaf dinners for ER staff to breakfast sandwiches, pasta, chicken, hot coffee and deli specialties, local FLAGs (Frontline Appreciation Groups) have provided tens of thousands of meals, snacks and pick-me-ups to medical professionals, volunteers, law enforcement and other first responders. At the same time, struggling local restaurants and food purveyors were able to make sales and keep staff employed during a challenging time.

“The restaurants were so appreciative,” she said. “I did a few deliveries, some restaurants did their own deliveries and we were always met by an agent outside. Everyone was always thanking us.”

She said that with police and EMS “always in and out,” FLAG “gave them restaurant gift cards to use at their convenience for food like sandwiches and pizza.”

In New Providence, volunteer Michele Castagna credited Borough Council members Michele Matsikoudis and Nadine Geoffrey, who heard about FLAGs in other towns and felt their community needed a similar effort.

“We needed to be able to fundraise quickly, so we hooked up with Anne McLane and the New Providence Education Foundation, because they are already a 501(c) (3), but 100 percent of the money we raised went to FLAG,” said Ms. Castagna.

Volunteers focused on restaurant food and gift cards, and recipients included Overlook, the VA hospital in Lyons, Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, Atlantic Ambulance, local police, EMS and the dispatch center at Borough Hall, which serves a number of area towns.

“We delivered lunches and dinners,” Ms. Castagna said. “We provided sandwiches, burgers, meat and rice, dinners of pasta or chicken. There are 24 restaurants in town, including chains, and we used everybody.” She noted the effort raised an estimated $16,000.

Fundraising was done mostly via social media, the borough’s official website and word of mouth, plus volunteers sold more than 150 bows at $10 each, crafted of ribbon and donated by Hall’s in Berkeley Heights.

SNACK TIME – With the cooperation of the Berkeley Heights Board of Education and food service provider Pomptonian, FLAG volunteers delivered a basket of chips and snacks to the Berkeley Heights Post Office, where they were greeted by a smiling Ziggy, an employee so wellknown in town he needs only a first name.

League, already a registered charity, the group began fundraising.

Once word was out, Ms. Pelinsky said, “Multiple organizations were contacting us wanting to know: How can we help? What do you need?” For example, Girl Scouts had been at the height of cookie selling season, and were left with many unsold. The girls asked the public to sponsor individual boxes that were delivered to staff at medical facilities. With schools closed, there were frozen and packaged goods being stored, so FLAG worked with the Berkeley Heights Board of Education and Pomptonian Food Service to create care packages that included bags of chips and cookies baked from frozen dough. Those bundles went to DPW workers, police, rescue, firefighters and postal employees.

Meanwhile, at the first peak of the virus in April and May, township FLAG organizers were making multiple deliveries to medical facilities each day.

“We gave restaurants strict parameters,” Ms. Pelinsky said, “but once they got up to speed, it

With no restaurant patrons and a shortage of food in grocery stores, and with healthcare workers overwhelmed, could we put these two together?” The answer was a resounding “yes.” Volunteers also learned cafeterias at health facilities had shut down to help stem the spread of COVID-19. Lucinda Hayes, Pam Yoss, Julie Lloyd and Lisa Curran joined the group to assist with the workload.

JUNIOR LEAGUE SUPPORTS PROGRAMS

A grant of $10,000 was received from The Grotta Fund for Senior Care, an advisory council fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest NJ. The fund has a 100year history of commitment to older adults in northern New Jersey and makes grants available to organizations that improve the lives of older adults and their families.

The Junior League grant will benefit several SAGE programs, including Home Care, Meals on Wheels, the Spend-A-Day Adult Day Medical Center, Support Groups, Educational Programs, InfoCare and Medicare Counseling. Since the beginning of COVID-19, the non-profit has seen an increase in requests for assistance from homebound, isolated neighbors in Summit and the surrounding area.

“The Junior League of Summit recognizes that the current public health crisis has significantly impacted the community’s ability to serve those most vulnerable at this time. We were honored

“We are so appreciative of The Grotta Fund’s generosity,” said SAGE’s interim executive director, Marianne Kranz. “Many of our clients feel so lonely and isolated with the temporary closure of the center. This new technology is a lifeline for these people.”

OUR LADY OF PEACE AND CHURCH OF THE LITTLE FLOWER HELP ENSURE RESIDENTS AREN'T GOING HUNGRY

T

wo area churches have ramped up their efforts to help ensure local residents are not going hungry during difficult and stressful times this winter.

In Berkeley Heights, Church of the Little Flower opens its food pantry on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at the rear of the Bernauer Parish Center, 290 Plainfield Ave. Visit foodpantry.lf@ gmail.com or call 908-464-6342 for details.

Because no refrigeration is available, volunteers are only seeking donations of boxed milk, canned stew or canned vegetables, which may be dropped off at the rear of the parish center (the township’s former library) during regular business hours.

In addition, the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club, long a supporter of the church’s food bank efforts, is hosting a virtual/online drive to benefit Little Flower. Donors are asked to buy items via yougivegoods.com/berkeleyheightsrotary, and purchases will be delivered to the pantry. “2020 is going to be a challenging holiday season for many in the area,” Rotary members noted, “and it will be especially hard for families in need.

The Little Flower Food Pantry is open to all, regardless of location or faith.”

In the past, items suggested by the Rotary for donation have included canned goods, paper products, cereal, rice, soap, shampoo and conditioner, laundry detergent, toothbrushes

and toothpaste, dish soap, crackers, cooking oil, deodorant, tuna, soup, juice, tomato sauce, pasta and peanut butter.

At Our Lady of Peace Church in New Providence, a food pantry was established nearly 20 years ago as a temporary help to community members who found themselves in need. Non-perishable food items may be left at church entrances or brought to the rectory at any time, and the coordinator, Maria Russo (908-472-3868) may be reached for those wishing to learn what the most current needs are.

OLP also sponsors a Sandwiches for St. Joseph Social Service Center effort, through which, since 1985, sandwiches are made and delivered to the center in Elizabeth the third Thursday of every month. The sandwiches – currently about 600 per month – are prepared at home by parishioners and collected at OLP for distribution. Volunteers are sought to assemble sandwiches and also to help with collection or delivery. For details, contact Ms. Russo or Arlene Hluch (908-604-6674).

Through OLP volunteers also provide aid to St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark. Each month on the second Thursday, and on the second Saturday in even months, a group travels to feed the homeless there. On Saturdays they prepare and serve breakfast, and on Thursdays they oversee a noon dinner. Each visit requires about 2.5 hours of a volunteer’s time. The meals are prepared in the kitchen and served outdoors, regardless of weather. For details about the program, call Michael Savage (908-771-9130).

or nearly 50 years, the Suburban Chamber of Commerce has sponsored a scholarship program that benefits college-bound seniors from the high schools in Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit.

"While it is our main mission to support local businesses and downtowns, we also think it is essential to reach out to younger community members and let them know we believe in them and want to help them further their educations,” said Karen Hadley, executive director of the Suburban Chamber. “We recognize that it’s an extremely odd time in history for students to be starting college, but we have continued our long tradition of awarding these scholarships, and we wish the winners the best as they navigate this new world and their lives as college students.”

The Class of 2020 recipients, chosen because they showed leadership both academically and within their communities, are: FROM GOVERNOR LIVINGSTON HIGH SCHOOL, MEGAN KNECHT IS NOW ATTENDING RUTGERS. Megan, who became a member of the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad in eleventh grade, also coached PAL Cheerleading, ran track at GL, was an active Girl Scout and received honors and awards for both her cheerleading and Scouting efforts, which included a leadership role at summer Scout camps. In addition, she was chosen for membership in the National Honor Music Society, the societies for math and athletics, and also the National Honor Society. Megan took part in the GL Hilltop Players productions of “Chicago” and “Peter Pan,” for which she was chosen for the role of Brick.

In addition, Megan sang in the chamber choir and regular choir, and was a member of the Governor Livingston Orchestra all four years of high school.

She shared with the scholarship selection committee details of what it entails to be a “riding member” of the rescue squad, having taken on a weekly weekday shift and another shift one weekend a month. “I respond to medical emergencies in town,” Megan said, “along with my supervising EMTs. We have weekly trainings and monthly cadet and squad trainings.”

FROM NEW PROVIDENCE HIGH SCHOOL AND NOW ENROLLED AT DREXEL UNIVERSITY IN PHILADELPHIA, OLIVIA HAAS. Among other achievements, was a four-year member and served on the Senior Advisory Council for the NPHS Marching Band, and performed in five of the school’s theatrical productions. She was president of the NPHS Music Club, and was chosen as a member of the National Honor Society and the Japanese Honors Society. She achieved honor roll status for four years, and earned the Varsity Color Guard Award.

she had as a volunteer beyond school, too. “I have volunteered for three consecutive years at the ECLS special needs school in Chatham,” she said. “I got to work with so many inspiring and creative students and wonderful staff at the school.” She also detailed mission work accomplished through the New Providence Presbyterian Church and Amor Ministries, which included work hosted by a community center in Jackson, Miss., and helping to build two homes in Mexico.

“Not only was I able to help out families and people in need,” she said, “I received so much love and valuable knowledge from these people (who) live so differently than me and everyone here in New Providence.”

SUMMIT HIGH’S JENNY QIU, NOW A MARKETING MAJOR AT RUTGERS UNIVERSITY. The child of parents who emigrated from China, before moving to Summit Jenny spent part of her childhood residing in New York’s Chinatown, which she told the scholarship committee helped her learn “to be resilient and adjust to the cultural and social differences between these drastically different environments.” Jenny said she loves to write, considers English one of her favorite subjects and is particularly proud of a research project she completed that focused on poet Sylvia Plath. After taking AP Psychology, she said she may minor in it in college.

A regular attendee during high school of the Summit-based PEP Program, which offers academic, social-emotional and financial assistance for economically-disadvantaged students, Jenny was also a member of the SHS Color Guard, taking on the front band position. She has worked over the years at her family’s restaurant, Sunny Asia, as a cashier and helping out with whatever is needed, and said the experience gives her the “chance to interact with the public and foster” her communication skills.

In nominating Jenny for the scholarship, guidance counselor Marie Purcell wrote, “Jenny is a disciplined, independent and fun-loving young woman. She balances life between family responsibilities, school and friendships…I am certain she will continue on the path of growth and involvement in any community she chooses.”
